The Interview

"So! Mr. Hellgrew, we understand that you were the product of a successful experiment. Tell us what it's like, having a robot help you with daily things."

The shadows sat ridged, each movement, each decision being documented by the camera, eagerly waiting a reply from the hidden figure. For awhile this mystery person sat, perhaps contemplating on what to say, or maybe refusing to say anything.

"I cannot tell you. What I could tell you, you would not understand," A long pause, "But I can tell you this, I am the product of an experimental A.I., meant to help make the decisions I cannot."

"I see. Does this A.I. have a name? A.I.'s having names is all the rage today you know."

Mechanical laughter, the kind that comes out of a metal box rather than real people.

         "I-i-it... aaaaaahaha!"

The figure to the right lent forward, worried about his 10 minute friend, while the left-most figure seemed to clutch his head, his figure bent over, as if trying to spread the supposed pain through his body, easing the center point.

"Sorry," he sat back up, "Side effect."

"Well, could you answer the previous question then?" The interviewer seemed uneasy now, his voice wavering between uncertainty and the sureness of what to do.

"It has no name, but it tells me to call it by my name."

"So it would like to be known as truly a part of you! Fascinating! You must be honored!"

         "No, I'm not."

The interview ends there. It's shown to kids around the world, proving the evolution of science, and medicine as a help to the human race.

"Teacher, why does the interview stop there?"

"I don't know Ignorance, but thanks to Mr. Hellgrew, many people are being saved with A.I. technology."

The child accepted this answer.

         "Miss Lies."

         "Yes Reality?"

"What about the people who disappear? My Dad still hasn't come back from his therapy."

A long pause. Uncertainty plastered across the 5th grade teacher's face. Pursing her lips, she turned to the computer, tap tap tapping on the clear screen. When she turned back around, she simply said:

"I'm sure your father will be back in no time at all. For now, how about you go to the office and call him? I'm sure the agency will love to hear from you."
