CHLOE MET THEM in the woods, now knowing that Natasha kept the tracker on for a reason. As far as she knew, nothing could get past the assassin. She exchanged nods with her allies, and a small smile with Steve.
The three, excluding Chloe, managed to get inside the SHIELD building, as Chloe would meet them there. She scaled the building from the outside while the others ascended the staircase. Once on the roof and safely on her point, the Assassin shot three arrows, two through soldiers, and one straight through a satellite. She stood, walking over to the door where the others were waiting.
The door swung open, a technician's eyes widening at the sight of the group. Sam and Maria were holding their guns up to him, while Chloe pointed an arrow at him.
Steve gave the man a smile. "Excuse us."
The man threw up his hands in a surrender motion. The group made their way inside, Chloe going first. The Assassin shot two arrows into the legs of two men and pushed them aside. She gestured to the PA system and stood over the fallen men.
Steve gave her a disappointed look and walked to the mic. "Attention all SHIELD agents, this is Steve Rogers. You've heard a lot about me over the last few days. Some of you were even ordered to hunt me down. But I think it's time to tell the truth. SHIELD is not what we thought it was. It's been taken over by HYDRA. Alexander Pierce is their leader. The STRIKE and Insight crew are HYDRA as well. I don't know how many more, but I know they're in the building. They could be standing right next to you.
They almost have what they want, absolute control. They shot Nick Fury. And it won't end there. If you launch those helicarriers today, HYDRA will be able to kill anyone that stands in their way. Unless we stop them. I know I'm asking a lot. But the price of freedom is high. It always has been. And it's a price I'm willing to pay. And if I'm the only one, then so be it. But I'm willing to bet I'm not."
She saw Sam smile. "Did you write that down first, or was it off the top of your head?"
An alarm rang through the building, causing Chloe to glance in the direction of the windows. She watched as helicarriers appeared from beneath the Pontiac, her brows furrowing.
"They're initiating launch," Maria informed.
The Frye watched as Sam and Steve went out the door, presumably to fight the threat. She glanced at Maria and raised her eyebrow in a silent question.
Maria glanced back. "Go, I can handle myself here."
Chloe ran out the door and, using the high ground, shot multiple agents who were shooting at Sam and Steve. She was all of a sudden extremely grateful for her sixth sense, who highlighted all threats a blood red.
"Hey, Cap, how do we know the good guys from the bad guys?" Sam asked.
"If they're shooting at you, they're bad."
Chloe smirked and ran out onto the platform. She grabbed an arrow and shot a man into a crate. She leaped onto a crate, shot a few arrows, stabbed a few bodies with her hidden blade, and flipped a gleaming silver knife in the direction of an agent.
She glanced down at Steve and nodded. "Go, I'll cover you."
He hesitated. "Will you be alright here?"
She shot an arrow right between the eyes of a soldier. "Captain, with all due respect, I wouldn't be here if I couldn't handle myself."
Steve shot his shield at an agent. "Chloe, I'm not kidding, if you get tired or injured, I want you to leave."
Chloe chuckled. "If I did that, I'd go against what I stand for. Now go bother someone else."
Steve finally nodded and, although hesitant, ran off toward the helicarriers. She continued her fights and took out soldier after soldier. Using her sense, she took out the people who posed a threat to her world.
Some people had a deeper red than the others, which intrigued her. A question rang through her head.
Were some of these people Templars?
The question made her fight harder. It just made the mission more personal, fighting harder and stronger. She twirled the bow in her hands and hit more soldiers in the head.
"Eight minutes."
"Working on it."
"Just a forewarning," Chloe grunted out, slamming a knife into the chest of a man, "some of these soldiers are Templars. If you see a red cross on the shoulder of a soldier, leave them to me. That fight isn't yours."
She didn't get a reply. Sighing, she ran across the platform and maneuvered her way across it. Chloe fought each man the same way she was trained to, with strength and determination.
Out of nowhere, a fist slammed into her back. She fell to the ground and somersaulted her way into kneeling. She glanced up, resting her eyes on the Winter Soldier.
She stood slowly, trying to regain her breath. Grabbing her sword, the Assassin whipped it out in front of her and readied herself into a battle stance. She motioned for the Soldier to come at her, and he did. At full sprint, the man ran at the teenager with a terrifying grace.
At first, the Soldier used an array of guns at the girl, which she was quick to get rid of. She sliced through them or kicked them out of his unsuspecting hands. Did he think she wasn't a threat because of her age?
She received her answer quickly. The fight quickly turned into a blade-on-blade battle, and Chloe began to see why so many people feared HYDRA's precious soldier. A knife clashed with the sword as the Frye's offensive stance quickly turned into a defensive one.
Unwanted panic and fear rushed her mind. He was proving much more of a threat than she originally thought. He sliced her leg and arm, and Chloe fought the impulse to fall. He finally slammed a knife into her exposed left arm, and Chloe used every impulse to not scream.
His arm slammed onto her red sword, and Chloe grunted. "Alex, if you can hear me, find a way to get me out of here!"
"Chloe? Chloe, are you okay?" came the rushed voice of Steve.
No answer came, but she got her's when an automated gun began firing at the soldier, drawing away his attention. She sliced his distracted arm from herself and threw a smoke bomb, running from the scene as fast as her legs could take her.
Passing running soldiers, Chloe took out as many soldiers as she could with her injured arm. The Assassins slammed her hidden blade into the bodies of corrupted soldiers. She ran to cover, panting heavily. "I'm sorry, Cap. I tried."
"It's okay, Chloe. Get yourself out of here!"
She fired more arrows into a crowd of oncoming agents and ducked behind a crate. She fired arrow after arrow until none were left in her quiver. A spark of thought entered her mind, she took out her earpiece and tied it to an explosive. With all her might, she threw the makeshift bomb in a general direction, wincing as it went off.
Her eyes grew heavy of blood loss, and the Frye reluctantly realized her time was done. Using the barrier as a crutch, Chloe stumbled into a standing position and made her way across the battlefield. Finding a random door, the Assassin kicked it open and ran inside.
Stabbing and throwing knives along the way, Chloe finally made her way out of the building and ran into the forest she arrived in. Resting her back against a tree, she applied pressure to her exposed shoulder, watching as the final helicarrier fell into the Pontiac.
Chloe Frye failed to notice the falling body of Steve Rogers as she made her way out of the forest and back to her base of operations.
