Episode 32: Wind, Lightning, and Fire
*Lei*
[A few moments earlier]
The children escorted me to a room with only a few chairs. Otherwise, it was completely devoid of any furniture.
"Alright, both of you show me what you got!" I said, sitting down next to Adela on the metallic floor.
"What we got?" Koal asked, tilting his head at me.
I snickered and nodded. "Yeah, show me your magic. It can be your secondary elements or fire. I just want to get a feel of your power."
Koal grinned. "Got it!"
I glanced over at Adela. "Will you be fine? These kids will be using fire."
Adela leaned back against the wall which appeared to be made out of a wood of some sort. Her lips curved slightly. "I'll be fine, I'll simply close my eyes. Sensing their heat should be enough for me to gauge their strength."
I nodded and directed my gaze at the two children. "Go ahead, show us your magic."
Koal stretched both hands out and grinned. "Stand back, sis. You might get hurt."
Solean sighed. "Brother, I've seen your magic. It's not that strong, but whatever." She shrugged and marched over to join Adela and me.
Once she was seat, Koal formed flames. Two marble sized spheres formed in his palms. The orbs rotated at breathtaking speeds, spitting out flames like some sort of firework. He raised his right leg and stepped forward.
The flames formed rings and spun around his arms like hoops.
"Woah! Nice trick!" I said, clapping and laughing.
Koal giggled. "Thanks."
Solean, narrowing her eyes at her brother, stood up and stomped the ground. "Koal, be serious!"
The boy grinned as the thin ring of flames went from red to blue and flared up to the size of tractor tires.
"These are coming from a five-year-old?" Adela asked, keeping her eyes closed. "They're intense."
I nodded as sweat began to secrete from my forehead. The boy had poured his wind prana into the flames, giving them their intensity and size. "Yeah. Hey, Koal, dial down the flames."
The kid let out a sigh of relief and fell down to one leg. His breathing was heavy. The flames around his arms died out completely.
"Koal," Solean said, rushing to attend her brother. "You okay?"
Koal raised a thumb up.
"You were awesome out there," I said, grinning. "To think that a little kid could make flames that intense."
Adela grumbled. "You know, my flames were as strong as his when I was his age... though, to see someone match my skill is a rarity."
"Right, your wood prana feeds into your flames too! Hmm, if only one of mine complimented the other like yours."
Adela smiled. "There are ways in which wind and lightning mix. Hey, how about after this, you come with me back home? To Xian. You have the ability to use darkness now, which means you can start learning our clan's techniques."
A giant grin covered my face. "That's right! Darkness makes three elements!" My smile gradually faded as I recalled the holy text. "But would I really be allowed? I mean, my darkness is from an abysmal being, the enemies of the Goddess of Light."
Adela put her hips on her shoulders. "You do know who the head priestess is, right?"
I snickered. "Yeah! Hey, think that you could perform a purification on me?"
Adela averted her eyes. "About that. We tried that while you were in the cell, but sadly it didn't work." She looked directly into my eyes. "There's something weird about that abysmal, as if it's not a pureblood."
I lowered my eyes as the spark of hope faded.
"Don't worry, I'll find a way to help you."
"You two are cute," Solean said, snickering.
Adela and I averted our gazes. "Cute you say?" Adela said, combing her hair over her face with her fingers.
I picked up Koal from the floor. "How about you show us what you got?"
Solean grinned. "Alright! I'll show you how amazing I can be!"
These two siblings are so different from the eldest one
Red sparks crackled around the young girl's hands. Though the sparks soon erupted into flame.
"That's not lightning," I said, sitting Koal down against the wall.
"I know!" Solean said, red-faced.
There were snickers by the door. Adela pulled the door open to reveal Vermillion and Akatsuki. Vermillion stepped back and bolted down the hall.
Akatsuki sighed. "Sorry about my cousin's behavior. We're going to go check next door."
Solean glared at the doorway. "How dare that girl make fun of me? I'll show her!"
I sighed. How about show us your flames?
She nodded slightly and like her brother, extended both hands out, forming rings. However, she didn't have them expand. Rather she split each of the rings into two, turning them into whips. Gripping one side of each whip, she stuck the air as if she were striking a lion tamer at some circus.
Red sparks appeared on the tips, causing Solean to grin. Though her smile was short lived as the sparks flew out of the whip. I turned toward the unconscious Koal.
Jumping forward and spinning around, I took the sparks to the back as I wrapped my arms around the child.
"That was close," Solean said, smiling. "Let me try again."
"Hey, wait, don't!" I yelled, but it was too late. This time Solean created a sphere of red lightning but it soon exploded, causing my hair to stand on end.
"Sorry!" Solean averted her gaze. "Seems I'm not cut out for this after all."
I stood up and sighed. "You still need to work on it. Let me show you."
Azure sparks manifested in both my palms. "You need to call upon only your lightning prana."
Solean grumbled. "Easy for you to say."
I snickered. "Made it look easy, huh? Truth be told, I still have yet to master how to use the Lightning Dragon spell."
Solean dropped her scowl. "You haven't?"
I nodded. "Yeah. It's hard to control. Lightning is a volatile power much like fire. Having both must make it difficult on you. To control both you must have focus."
Adela came up from behind. "Hearing you say that is kind of ironic."
Solean blinked. "Huh?"
"Adela," I said, pouting.
She snickered. "Come on, this might help you too! You get distracted rather easily."
"Hey, it's different during a battle!"
Adela giggled. "Well, your prana control is not bad despite that." She shifted her gaze toward Solean. "Now, as Lei said, fire and lightning are difficult elements to master in part due to their volatility as well as their similarity. You need to split the two pranas apart."
I gasped. "Just like our first lecture in potion class!"
Adela nodded. "Yes. Part of the purpose of that was for chakra control. While both Ren and you struggled initially, you managed to do it after another try. Yet, for Solean that will be more difficult."
I tilted my head at her. "How so?"
"It's like ice and water."
"Ah, now I get it," I said, putting my hands behind my head.
"I am not sure if I understand," Solean said, scratching her head.
I grinned. "You're old enough to know about colors, right."
Solean grumbled. "Yes. I am not an idiot you know?"
This girl is a lot like Raul...
"Well see the element as colors. Using Adela's example, imagine ice as blue and water as indigo."
"Okay..."
"Now, the two are barely distinguishable. Some even call indigo blue. The same goes for ice and water prana, which tends to often overlap."
"Overlap?"
"Many water mages can cast some ice spells and some can ice mages are capable of casting a few water spells." I tilted my head. "But come to think of it, none of the water or ice mages I've met has used both."
Adela tilted her head. "That's true, but one can expect it from the water mages, seeing how this region is tropical."
"What does that have to do with anything?" Solean asked, clearly confused.
"You see, the climate of one's birthplace can impact their prana. Though 'birthplace' can be misleading," Adela responded for me. "It's actually determined based on one's development in the womb. The natural prana, or what Zionias call 'mana' has an impact on us. Mana is what gives our prana their elemental affinities. These however can change. Lei here is an example of that as he can now use dark prana."
I put my hands behind my head once more. "Yup."
Solean touched her head. "I'm not sure if I understand."
Lei grinned. "Ah, seems we confused you with all of this babble. Anyway, what we meant to say is that your prana is like two colors which are hard to tell apart. You must segregate them in order to use them on their own. Using my color example, I will say that your lightning prana, represented by yellow for the sake of this example, and your fire prana, red, are closely connected, forming orange."
Solean pouted. "But Lei mixes his wind with his flames, why can't I do that?"
"They compliment each other well, though fire and lightning do too. The issue is that your prana is unbalance, resulting in an orange-red rather than a solid orange."
Solean closed her eyes. "Wish I was more into colors like Nekua is, but I think I'm starting to get it. It's like when one mixes colors for fingerpainting, right?"
I chuckled. "Exactly!"
She giggled. "Yay!"
"Sorry to interrupt," Lady Yeung said, standing by the open door. "My husband wishes to see all of you." She gazed at Koal. "Did he faint too?"
"Yeah, he exhausted himself," Solean said, walking over to her kid brother.
Lady Yeung sighed as she made her way toward Koal. "These boys sure go all out."
"Solean would've too, if I didn't stop her," I said, nodding.
She smiled. "I am assuming she's the reason why you look like that?"
I touched my face which was covered in a charcoal-like substance. "Yes... So, what is it that Mr. Huo wants?"
"I'm not all that sure, he didn't elaborate on it." She lifted Koal into her arms.
I grinned. "I see. Well I get the feeling that it's something awesome!"
**Solar Note: Sorry for the slightly over two month delay, I got caught up doing other stuff. I'm hoping to get the next chapter done for this Friday, but there is a chance that I may not as I got an interview for Grad School. Anyway, I hope that you enjoyed this chapter :3.**
