6/ Wattpad Woes
So, around a year ago I started to take a big interest in writing. Reading has always been something I loved to do from primary school up to now and I'm in my third year at secondary school. When I was little, I dreamed to be many things: a police woman, a nurse, a designer, teacher and an author. When I was in primary school, I loved the time in English where we got to write stories. They weren't the best but they did well at the time. Around half a year ago let's say, around June, I came across Wattpad and I fell in love with the stories on here and they way normal and ordinary people got the chance to publish their work for the world to see; they weren't any big and real authors, just normal people. I became in love with Wattpad instantly and dreamt of how it would be to see all these people read your story.
For months I had ideas of future stories but I was too scared to write it or start a profile on here because if somebody found from school found out about this my next 3 years of school would be a disaster. I finally found the courage to make a profile and start a story but I constantly worry about the 'what ifs' if somebody finds out what I do. I love to write on here, don't get me wrong! But I just feel like I'm sacrificing my social life outside of Wattpad if someone found out... I constantly picture scenarios of what would happen at school if it did ballet because I know for sure I would be the laughing stock of the year group. I haven't told anyone apart from my mum who knows briefly about the fact that I write. I feel as if there isn't anyone I can tell because once I tell one person I feel as if it will be out and people will know. I don't know what to do... Any advice?
Can I just say that I had exactly the same dilemma when I started writing on Wattpad? I know exactly where you're coming from, and it can be difficult to judge who you can tell about Wattpad. What you need to remember is that whatever scenarios you play in your head will not actually happen, if anyone does find out they probably will either make a short joke, ask what Wattpad is or be interested in Wattpad.
Most people don't actually know what Wattpad is, so even is people find out your writing on it, they probably won't know what it is.
I remember being nervous anytime anyone asked to use my phone because I didn't want them to accidentally stumble across my story drafts on Wattpad... But when I finally told my friends they thought it was stupid and lame at first, but they've learnt that it makes me happy and it's actually quite cool.
If you're worried about people finding out, just don't tell anyone that you can't trust with your secrets. But at the end of the day, if anyone does tell everyone in your school, just raise your head high and accept the fact that not everyone will understand why you enjoy writing and why you write what you write. Just do what you love, and if other people don't like it they can go away. (I was going to swear but chose not to XD)
