16/ Best Friend Concerns

My best friend just opened up to me a couple of days ago about how she feels about herself. She told me that she thinks she's 'ugly' and 'fat' and also admitted that she stopped eating because of it. In addition, she also said that I am the only person that knows. By that I asked if her mum knows. She replied no and added "Do not tell anyone." I am concerned about her health. I reassured her that I'll be there for her but my problem is- do I tell anyone? If I should tell someone, who? Do you think I'd betray her if I told someone?

I think that if you're really concerned about her health, telling an adult is the best decision to make because even though she may resent you for it at first, when she gets better she will thank you.

You need to make her feel like she can trust you, so try and speak to her about how she's feeling on a regular basis and make sure you know how to support her by researching online on how to deal with people suffering from eating disorders and low body confidence. Getting a trusted adult involved is my best advice even though it may seem like you're betraying her trust because at the end of the day, she won't get better without help. Support her through this, don't get frustrated with her and try to take baby steps with her.

If you don't feel comfortable telling an adult, try and convince her to tell her parents or someone she trusts.
