chapter six

SELENA WAS MUNCHING on a candy bar as she walked around the movie store. The sun was already set as she swallowed the sweet taste of her chocolate. Her eyes looked all around, trying to spot anyone in the nearly deserted place.

Her shoes made soft tapping noises with each step she took, going to look up and down each isle. Selena paused when she saw a woman pushing a baby stroller. The brunette turned when she felt eyes on her, offering a polite smile that Selena easily turned.

Selena wandered around aimlessly until the woman proceeded to check out and leave. That was when she spotted him. Leveque. He was nearly Peter's age with greasy dark hair and a round stomach. After bidding the woman goodbye, Leveque flinched when he saw Selena watching him. He hadn't even seen her come in the front door.

"Um, hello, Miss. Do you need help finding anything?" Leveque offered an easy going smile as he came out around the front desk. He wasn't very subtle when he let his eyes rake down along Selena's defined figure.

She pursed her lips, pointing one finger at a row of lightbulbs not far away, "That light needs fixed."

Leveque's brows drew inwards, following her finger to where she was gesturing. He was confused when he saw nothing wrong with it. It didn't flicker or fade, it lit up perfectly fine.

Suddenly the lightbulb grew so hot it burst at a moment's notice, glass shards flying to the floor. Leveque jumped in shock, one hand slapping against his chest. He gulped as he looked over to Selena again, his heart now racing.

"Y-Yes, I suppose it does," he agreed, dipping into the back to retrieve a ladder and tool bag. His hands trembled as he carried the ladder over to the proper row, unfolding it once there.

Selena trailed behind him, eyeing him down like a predator hunts its prey. Leveque could feel it, too. The back door was heard opening and closing, making him jump again. He even dropped the wrench in his hand.

"I think you dropped this," Selena blinked at him, one hand holding out the tool while the other stuffed her crumpled wrapper into her pocket.

Leveque gulped, only half of him paying attention to the blonde. He was more concerned with who came in from the locked back door, "Oh, yes, I—"

Selena snatched onto the arm that'd reached out to take the wrench, instead yanking him straight off of the ladder and onto the floor. He landed with a loud grunt, pain igniting in his elbow that crashed against the linoleum.

"What the hell?!" he called upwards, brows scrunched in fury. Selena snickered, pulling her healed foot back before slamming it against his rib cage. Leveque let out another strangled noise of pain, clutching the area, "Why are you doing this?"

"Oh, why don't you ask my friend," she nodded to the figure looming at the end of the isle.

When Leveque followed her line of vision, his breath caught in his throat. The beast standing there brought on a slideshow of memories, all revolving around that house he so mercilessly lit into flames.

Peter snarled, slowly advancing closer. Leveque crawled backwards with a whimper up until he knocked into Selena's legs. Leveque peered up at her, tears rolling down his cheeks as his eyes were begging, "Please, don't do this."

Selena could feel the tug at her heartstrings. With a look like that staring back at her, how could she not? To have somebody pleading with her to spare their life was breathtaking in the worst way possible.

Selena stepped back, watching as Peter tore Leveque apart in ways no mere mortal could so casually. He made it look easy, not even sparing a second. Peter didn't even hesitate to end a begging man's life.

That probably should've been her first warning sign.

Selena gulped, forcing her emotions to remain neutral. She didn't know what was so different about him from Meyers. Hell, this guy was clearly a pervert from the way he eyed her down. But those eyes—those eyes portrayed a struggling human being struck by terror.

She then turned, stumbling her way into the back room and then out that door. Selena's hands shook as she continued the two yards to the tree line. She was instantly bending over, releasing the contents of her stomach onto the grass and leaves below.

The same sugary taste that once slid across her tongue was now foul and bitter. Selena placed one hand on her stomach, the other bracing herself against a tree. She panted, struggling to keep what little composure she had left.

Selena gasped when she heard a scream from the parking lot. She wasn't sure how long she had stood there collecting herself and that shrill noise sounded familiar. Selena was running around the side of the building before she even realized it.

Vaguely, she saw Peter's figure running away, though she was more focused on the car parked out front. The red vehicle was incredibly familiar, especially the strawberry blonde sat behind the wheel.

"Lydia!" Selena rushed forward, over to the door and quickly opening it. Lydia was shaking and sobbing. She collapsed against Selena's chest, desperate for comfort in her arms. Selena held her tightly, pressing a kiss to the girl's hairline, "Shh, you're okay, I'm here."

Jackson looked equally as rattled when he emerged from the movie store next, one hand grabbing at the back of his neck while the other held a phone up to his ear. His brows were furrowed, brain unable to wrap around the events that just took place.

Selena couldn't believe they of all people happened to show up. She was grateful Peter didn't lash out and end up hurting either of them, though she was unaware of the mark now sliced into Jackson's neck.

All Selena could do was hold Lydia while Jackson spoke with the police.

What a mess it'd all became so quickly.

It took longer than it should've to get out of there. The EMTs insisted on giving the three of them full check-ups, and even then were lenient on letting them go. Lydia was borderline catatonic, Jackson was fuming, and Selena was mostly observing, tending to Lydia.

Lexie was working, meaning she couldn't come pick up her daughter. They reluctantly let Selena go without a guardian getting her, and she was on her merry way. Lydia and Jackson were already taken care of.

Now, Selena was walking the several blocks back to her car. Peter had insisted that there should be no way it got traced back to her. That was also why they came in from the back. However, Peter ended up jumping out the window and Selena ran around to comfort Lydia anyways. At least the police suspected nothing thus far.

It was eerily quiet as Selena fished her keys out of her bag. The various loose objects inside jangled, hinting she was close. After yanking them out, they unfortunately clashed with the ground. Grumbling numerous profanities, Selena bent down to snatch them off the pavement.

Out of nowhere Selena was shoved forward, someone grabbing her hair to slam her against the side of her car. She was sent into a panic, her heart racing.

"Who is it?"

The voice coming from behind her was deep and masculine. It sounded more like a growl. The situation was truly terrifying. The feeling of somebody's breath against the back of her neck while she was so helplessly trapped had Selena panicking.

"Get the fuck off me!" Selena shouted, trying to push back out of the person's hold. They only pulled her back to shove her again, eliciting a painful yelp out of her.

"Who's the alpha?" the person demanded again, clearly not letting up anytime soon.

"Don't you ever lay your hands on me again!" Selena balled her hands into fists at her sides.

Within seconds the person was groaning in pain, releasing their hold on Selena as they fell back to their knees. Whirling around, Selena was slightly shocked at who stood there.

Derek Hale. Selena knew him as Peter's nephew and a bit of a recluse to the town of Beacon Hills. He was also a werewolf, evidently searching for the alpha prowling about. Selena was given strict orders not to tell anyone about it being Peter, even Derek. They were all to believe Peter was still in a coma.

The pain evaporated but it would take several minutes for Derek to fully heal. Sweating from the heat under his skin, the raven-haired man looked up. Opposing shades of blue irises clashed, both conveying storms of different emotions.

"What did you do to me?" Derek panted, hands rested on his knees as he relaxed.

"Boiled your blood," Selena stated, tone clipped. She was still looking at him wearily, as if not sure what to do, "You're lucky I didn't kill you. Never grab a woman like that."

Derek swallowed any saliva in his mouth. He knew he was backed into a corner, no longer having the upper hand. With abilities like that, Derek saw Selena as a significant threat. It was no longer a question why the alpha would recruit a seemingly normal high schooler.

"Why are you working with the alpha?" Derek stood to wobbly feet, "Who is he?"

Selena clenched her jaw, "It's none of your business. If you knew, you'd be thanking me," she unlocked her car, "Stay out of my way—both of ours."

"I can't—" Derek paused, brows drawing together. He had been listening to Selena's heartbeat for any sudden ticks when he noticed something peculiar. Eyes widened before dropping to her belly. Noticing the diversion, Selena stepped back, both hands cupping her stomach protectively, "You're pregnant."

"Don't talk to me," Selena lunged forward, grabbing the collar of his shirt to force them to be at the same height, "Don't even mention my baby. If I see your face again, Derek, I won't hesitate to boil your fucking blood and this time I might not stop."

Getting back into her car, Selena was away in a flash.

Selena was thankfully granted permission to skip school the next day. Although she was fine, Lydia was not. The girl was hopped up on drugs given to her to try and make her feel better. Instead, she was practically delusional.

Selena spent the day pacing back and forth, glancing at her phone every so often. She had texted Peter three times and he was radio silent. It made Selena feel antsy.

Why was last night's attack so different? Selena had murdered someone before. She did it without flinching, it did nothing but raise her confidence. Selena felt powerful when killing Meyers—but why did she feel sick last night?

Selena knew why, deep down. It was those damned eyes. When killing Meyers, he wasn't begging. He looked at her like he'd been waiting all along for someone to come and kill him. He knew he deserved it, and he was ready to pay for what he did. If anything, Selena did him a favor. He could finally rest easy.

Leveque wasn't like that. He was desperate. He looked back at Selena like she was his only hope, a potential saving grace. And then, he realized she didn't need to transform into a giant wolf to be a monster.

She already was.

"Honey, there's a Stiles here to see you."

Selena halted her stride, whirling around to see Stiles Stilinski stood there. He was dressed in jeans and a flannel, his honey eyes darting back and forth between Selena and his crush laid on her bed.

"What the hell is a Stiles?" Lydia's words slurred together, a tell-tale sign she was drugged. Selena moved to somewhat shield Lydia's body with her own. The strawberry blonde was in nothing but a thin night gown with a low front.

"She took a little something to ease her nerves. You can go in," Natalie Martin, Lydia's mother, gave a forced smile to the lanky teen before slipping away.

"Thanks," Stiles nodded before turning to face Selena. He jerked back at the ferocious glare he was met with. It practically burnt through his skull with it's intensity.

"What the hell are you doing here?" Selena crossed her arms, standing up to walk closer to him.

"I-I'm just here to check on Lydia," Stiles stuttered. He was looking all around, avoiding staring at Selena's face. She was about to say something else when she noticed a specific spot he kept returning his gaze to.

"Did you just—" she paused, huffing, "Did Derek tell you. . ?" she trailed off, looking back at Lydia nervously. It was clear even if Lydia heard, she wouldn't remember.

"Uh, maybe," Stiles blinked. He wasn't sure how to handle this situation. Scott made it very clear Selena was dangerous and it'd be wise to steer clear of her.

Selena faltered, nervous about the information he now had, "Please, Stiles, don't tell anybody. Especially not Lydia or something, if she found out from somebody other than me she'd be pissed."

At that moment, Stiles nearly forgot the fact that Selena was capable of literally boiling his blood, "I won't, I promise. It's just. . ," he hesitated, not sure if he should even bother asking, "Why are you working with the alpha? Is he blackmailing you?"

Selena pursed her lips. Something about Stiles was a bit comforting. Regardless, she'd remain loyal to Peter.

"I can't tell you," she shook her head, "I can't tell anyone. So just back off, and have your little friends do the same."

Her phone ringing in her pocket caught her attention, and Selena quickly slipped out of the room and into Lydia's bathroom. As Stiles spoke with Lydia, she answered the phone call she had been waiting on all night.

"Why the hell haven't you answered me until now?" Selena kept her voice quiet, not wanting to risk Stiles overhearing.

"I'm so sorry my darling, I've been needed at the hospital," Peter had mastered the apologetic attitude—as if he didn't do everything with intent, "Keeping appearances and all. It's no excuse, though, I'm terribly sorry."

Perfect manipulation: acting as if he didn't deserve her accepting his apology. It worked every time. Selena sighed, stressed as she paced to and fro, "It's okay. I just, I can't stop thinking about last night."

Silence. Peter needed several moments to compose a response, "What is it, sweetheart?"

"I don't know," Selena shook her head even if he wasn't there to see it, "I can't stop thinking about Leveque. Something about the way he looked at me, Peter."

"You think I'm a monster, don't you?" he fret, not even giving her the chance to respond yet, "Oh heavens, I was afraid of this. I just got so caught up in my anger, I didn't even think of what I've become."

"You're not a monster," Selena quickly shot down the idea, managing to feel sorry for the psychopath, "I would never think of you like that. These guys, they deserve it. I know they do. I'm sorry, I just had a moment of doubt. It won't happen again, I promise."

Peter was smirking on the other end.

"Oh, alright, then. I don't know what I'd do without you."

And just like that, Selena adorned a smile. Any reasonable doubt she had was at least temporarily washed aside.

Dear lord, this would not end well.
