chapter seven
"EVERYTHING LOOKS GOOD. You're free to go, ladies."
Selena had a small smile from where she laid on the hospital bed. They were having a check up just to make sure things were going smoothly. Lexie stood beside the bed, dressed in scrubs, with one hand holding Selena's.
"Thank you, Overstreet," Lexie nodded at her curly haired coworker. She returned the smile before walking out of the room. Lexie then turned to her daughter, "I wanna hear your prediction. Do you think it's gonna be a boy or girl?"
Selena hummed, rubbing her stomach and looking down quizzically as if it were a crystal ball, "It's a boy. I can just feel it."
Lexie laughed lightly, humming, "I said the exact same thing when I was pregnant with you."
Selena laughed along. She was about to say something, when Lexie's pager beeped. The older blonde looked at it before sighing, "I've gotta go, honey. I'll see you later, okay?"
Selena nodded, trying not to feel sad that their moment was ruined. Lexie dropped a kiss to her forehead, then one to her stomach, and then she left. Selena hopped down from the bed, pulling her shirt back down. There was no really noticeable change to her stomach yet, but Selena swore she could see one.
She grabbed her bag and coat before turning and exiting the room. She looked both ways before turning down a hallway. Selena weaved her way around to the proper room, and then she entered.
Peter was sat in a wheelchair, burn marks all over his body. Selena didn't understand how he could make them appear and disappear however he desired. Realizing it was Selena who entered, Peter sat up and sent her a friendly smile, "How was your check up?"
Selena locked the door behind her as she always did, going to sit down on his flimsy bed, "It went good. The baby's perfectly fine."
Peter nodded, going over to his bedside table and opening the drawer. Selena watched curiously as he retrieved a little velvet box, turning to her.
"I got you something," Peter said, standing in front of her now, "I don't want you to think I'm buying your forgiveness—"
"Peter, I've already forgiven you," Selena assured with a shake of the head.
Peter sighed dramatically, nodding, "I know. You've just been so much help, I thought you deserved something. Go ahead, open it."
Selena reluctantly accepted the jewelry box, opening it. She was surprised by the expensive item staring back at her. The chain was an intricate white gold, the pendant a rainbow moonstone shaped like a crescent moon. She beamed up at the older man, "It's so beautiful, thank you!"
Peter chuckled as she hugged him, arms wrapped tight around his neck, "Well, nothing comes close to your beauty, sweetheart."
Selena giggled as she pulled back, handing him the necklace before turning around. Peter draped the necklace over her neck, clasping it and brushing her hair over it. Selena was all smiles as she turned back around, one hand feeling at the heavy pendant.
"Seriously, thank you," she said again.
"You're welcome," Peter held his hands behind his back. He studied her cerulean eyes, knowing he had her perfectly under his spell.
"I've gotta get to school now, but I'll see you later," Selena said. She pressed a chaste kiss to his charred cheek before going around him and out the door. Peter returned to his wheelchair and playing his catatonic persona.
Still, he couldn't fight the smirk that tugged at his lips.
Selena was in so very deep.
* * * * *
Selena was bounding down the school corridor, searching for Lydia. The strawberry blonde hadn't responded to any of her texts. It wasn't until halfway through the day that Selena finally spotted the girl.
"Lydia!" Selena called out, rushing to catch her. She didn't even slow down. Finally, Selena was able to slide in front of her, exasperated, "What the hell are you doing? I've been calling out to you."
Lydia had a shockingly steely glare, letting out a sarcastic laugh, "Like I should care. Where were you this morning? You missed cheer practice," she asked like it was an interrogation, not a friendly worry. Selena lurched back at the harsh wording.
"I had a doctors appointment, I—"
"Of course you were," Lydia snapped, arms crossing, "Allison told me you're pregnant."
Selena's jaw dropped. It was happening. Lydia knew about the baby, and she didn't hear it from Selena. This was quite literally her biggest fear.
"Lydia, I—"
"Who's the father?" Lydia demanded, "Cause don't think I haven't noticed the way Jackson's been acting around you. It's like he knows something I don't, and now I know what it is. Did you seriously have sex with my boyfriend and get pregnant?"
"No!" Selena rushed out, her head shaking, "Lydia, I would never. Please, just calm down, I can explain everything."
"Save it," Lydia spat, fed up. She was bubbling with anger and betrayal, "Why should I believe you? You didn't even tell me."
Selena felt frozen as she watched Lydia run away. Her heart was shattering in her chest. That was her best friend, and she didn't even give her the time of day. Lydia didn't let Selena try to explain the harsh reality of the situation. How did Allison even know?
When Selena realized, she felt anger swell up in her chest. Her hands trembled, growing strikingly hot. Selena ignored the bell ringing, signaling the start of class. She was too busy hunting down her next target.
By chance, it didn't take her long to find him. Selena pushed through the school door, storming off towards the lacrosse field. The grass beneath her feet singed with each step.
"McCall!" she shouted, hands balled into fists.
Weirdly enough, Scott had his arms duct-taped behind his back while Stiles was throwing lacrosse balls at him. Selena didn't even care to question it as she approached the moronic boys with heat in her eyes.
Both boys nearly shit their pants, Stiles quickly fumbling to remove the tape off of Scott.
"You idiot!" Selena shrieked, now only a yard away, "You told Allison I'm fucking pregnant, didn't you?!"
Scott's eyes were widened as he flinched back. Selena was charging straight at him, ready to swing. He was lucky she didn't already burn him to a crisp.
"Okay, let's settle down," Stiles tried to say. Selena lunged at Scott, her hand flying out to try and hit him. Stiles barely intervened in time, arms wrapping around her waist and holding her back, "Jesus Christ you're hot," he couldn't ignore the heat he felt even through both of their clothes.
"I'm so sorry!" Scott said frantically, watching in terror as Selena struggled against Stiles' hold, "I thought they knew, I didn't mean to tell Allison your secret. I swear to god it was an accident, Selena, you've gotta believe me."
"I should fry your ass," Selena snarled, breathing deeply as she gave up on trying to escape Stiles' tight grip.
"No, you really shouldn't," Stiles gulped nervously. It was growing increasingly difficult to hold her back from ripping Scott's head off.
"Do you know how pissed Lydia is with me?" Selena's voice cracked, tears welling in her eyes. Scott's expression softened as a frown appeared. His shoulders slumped, realizing he had really messed up. Stiles let the girl go, moving to stand beside Scott with the same sympathetic look, "She thinks Jackson's the father."
"Is he?"
"Why?"
Selena pursed her lips at their questions, rolling her eyes, "It's hard to explain. He's not the father, but. . ," she stopped there, not knowing how to explain the situation without going in depth. These boys weren't her friends, she wasn't going to spill her darkest trauma with them.
"She'll come around," Scott tried to assure her, "You guys are best friends. She won't stay mad at you."
"And if she does, you can totally set Scott on fire," Stiles shrugged. Scott looked at him with an irritated look. Selena, surprisingly, let out a soft laugh at the joke. Stiles always knew how to diffuse tension.
"What are you dumbasses doing out here anyway?" Selena switched subjects, gesturing to the balls and tape.
"I'm teaching Scotty-boy control," Stiles patted his friend on the shoulder.
Selena snorted, crossing her arms, "Let me guess, you're trying to make him mad then have him calm down?"
"Ding ding ding," Stiles confirmed. Selena suppressed another eye roll.
"You can't just expect him to magically gain all control," Selena lectured, dropping her hands to instead rest on her hips. She gave Scott a once over, blatantly doubting his ability.
Scott and Stiles shared a look, both debating. It felt an awful lot like a deal with the devil if they were to trust Selena to train Scott. Maybe they were better off with Derek after all.
But, just as before, Stiles couldn't help but see the sad, pregnant girl instead of the murderous phoenix in Selena.
"How do you keep control over whatever it is that you have?" Stiles asked. Derek explained to the both of them what he knew about her kind. He was aware of the whole world of supernatural beings out there, but he wasn't particularly well versed in most of them.
Selena paused, debating the same thing they were. She tried to think of how Peter would feel about this. Would he be okay with her helping someone like Scott, a near enemy?
Selena decided that Scott deserved help. Just like she did.
"I-I was told to find a tether," Selena tried to explain without giving away more than she should, "Like, something to think of to calm down. Something to use to want to be better, to dictate why you're doing everything."
Scott reminisced on her words. As a hormonal teenage boy, Allison came to mind. He needed to gain control over his wolf side if he wanted to be serious with her. Was young love enough of a motive?
"What's yours?" Stiles pried a little more. Selena raised her brows, giving him a look like he should already know. After a moment he hummed, nodding and pointing, "Right, the whole pregnancy thing. Makes sense."
Selena sighed, although she wasn't all that annoyed with him. She sorta liked Stiles, "Right," she clapped her hands, starting to head for the building, "Good luck with all this, I've probably done enough."
"Thank you," Scott called last second. He was struggling to paint a mental picture of Selena. She wasn't all good or all bad. It wasn't even clear which was stronger. All Scott knew was that maybe there was some redemption possible for Selena Koury.
Selena glanced back at him, forcing her smile down, "Don't thank me, I'm still debating kicking your ass."
Scott blushed, fighting a smile of his own as he watched her leave.
And Stiles wondered if there was something unspoken between them. An understanding, maybe.
The period was over relatively soon and everyone was off to their next class. Selena stopped by her locker before she happened to spot Allison in the jungle of students. Jaw set, she marched over.
"Argent," she only had to raise her voice a tad to gain the attention of the noirette.
Allison turned, curiosity turning into a nervous expression. Both of her dainty hands clutched her books a little tighter, "Oh, hi Selena."
"Shove it," Selena snapped, coming to a stop mere inches away. She stood barely an inch taller than Allison in her heels, but a glare like that would've been intimidating from any distance, "Give me one good reason not to kick your teeth in."
"Excuse me?" Allison blushed, shrinking under the heavy gaze.
"No, you're not excused," Selena quipped sarcastically, "You know what you told Lydia. Now tell me why I shouldn't kick your teeth in."
"She deserved to know," Allison muttered, eyes ducking away. Deep down, she knew what she did was wrong. She also knew why she did it.
Jealousy. It constantly panged her gut when around the striking blonde. To Allison, Selena was perfect. Of course this view was false and obscured, but it was how she felt.
When Scott dropped the bomb about her being pregnant, Allison was shocked. She realized Selena was human. It was wrong to weaponize her flaws, but she did it anyways.
Because Allison was only human, too.
"You didn't even deserve to know!" Selena threw her hands up to refrain from shoving her to the ground right there. As always, she felt the tickle of burns against her palms, threatening to strike Allison's hair on fire, "I was going to tell her my own way, on my own time. You've messed everything up."
Allison bit her tongue. In her opinion, she wasn't fully in the wrong. Lydia did deserve to know, especially if Jackson was involved. But, Allison also knew Selena could kick her ass, so she stayed silent.
"Get in my way again and so help me god, you will regret it," it seemed like Selena was doing an awful lot of threats lately. She didn't stick around, instead storming off elsewhere.
She couldn't decide which was worse: supernatural, or high school drama.
