Life and death

Thorin's pov

As I fought the hoard of orcs around me I tried to see ash. She had dissapeared into the small hoard. I cursed under my breath as I stabbed one of the orcs in his knee, only for a different orc to smash into me, making me lose my footing and slide across the ice, all the way to the edge of the waterfall. I hang over the endge slightly. I put my foot on the other side of a rock to hold me up as I feel myself slowly go over the edge. I hear, what I vaguely remember as ash's voice when she spoke elvish, scream "hanar! Help him!".

I use my strength to raise my head slightly, blood rush made my world fuzzy. But i could clearly see the orc coming towards me as I lay defenceless in the ice. As it raises its words I flinch as I prepare for the pain but nothing happiness. I hear gasping and I look up to see he's been stabbed, by my old sword I'd lost in Mirkwood. As it falls over the edge, i manages to reach out and grab the sword, saving it from going over. I look around for my saviour only to see ash's brother & the son of the elf who had caused me so much anger.

I got up and started at my sword in wonder. Only to look up and see Azog, alone, facing him. Azog & I approach each other slowly; suddenly, a horn blows, and Azog smiles as a hill in the distance behind him becomes covered with approaching orc help. Azog charges forward and swings a large rock attached to a chain at me, but thankfully I duck under it. As Azog is unbalanced by the swing, i manages to get behind him and slash his back. Azog angrily swings the rock at me again, and as i dodges, the rock smashes into the ice, cracking it.

I feel it slowly crack like glass beneath my feet. I held my breath for a second but I when I am sure it is stable i swing at him again and we continue our battle. I see ash far off in the distance fighting azog's white warg, her sword was in its mouth against the back of its open jaw as it tries to bite her. She lend the handle and one end of the blade to keep it there, it slit through one of her hands and a small stream of blood slid down her body and into a puddle that sat on the ground slowly growing beside her.

As we fight, the ice continues cracking. We both pause for a second, then Azog swings again. This time, the ice actually begins to break apart beneath them. As i stumbles over an edge of the ice, Azog manages to knock my legs out from under me with the chain. As Azog swings again, I barely manages to roll away. I leap behind Azog, who is off balance, and slash his putrid back again. Azog angrily swings the rock and chain at me, missing; this time, the rock becomes stuck in the ice, and Azog is forced to slash at me with his bladed arm. I almost chuckle slightly at how pathetic he looks. Suddenly, Azog looks into the sky behind me in shock, in confusion I look behind me and see the eagles. I smile in relief slightly as they sail through the ranks of the oncoming orc reinforcements from Gundabad, decimating them.

I suddenly throws my sword down, reaching forward, i lift the rock at the end of the chain and toss it to Azog, who instinctively catches it. Azog looks at me in shock. I smirk as I jump backward, off the ice floe that we were both standing on; without my weight to balance it, and with Azog at the other end holding the rock, the ice floe tips over and plunges Azog into the water below. He scrabbles at the edge, but the chain pulls him down. I pant in exhaustion as I watch him sink.

I glance to ash she see her covered in what I can only assume is a mixture of her own blood and the blood of the new 'red' warg lying dead beside her. She panted and got up, weakly walking over to me and smiling slightly. "Is.. he gone?..." she asked. I didn't say anything as we both looked down at the ice.

As i bends down to pick up Orcrist, i see Azog through the ice, being pulled slowly by the current toward the frozen waterfall. Me and ash slowly walk above him, and we stare at each other through the ice. Azog closes his eyes. Ash covers her mouth with her bloody hand and cries tears of joy. I smile and almost turn to hug her, our personal torturer was dead. Suddenly, azog opens his eyes, and he manages to stab me through the foot. I scream in agony and I watch ash's overjoyed tears turn to a look of pure fear as she backs away and starts to shake. She goes to pull out her sword only to curse and glance back at the death warg who had it imbedded in its skull. Azog's leaps from the ice and pins me down, forcing his blade arm towards my chest. I grab my sword and stop him from plunging it into my heart.

Ash's POV

Azog leaps through the ice and pins Thorin down. As he stabs his blade arm at Thorin, Thorin manages to stop it from piercing his chest by sliding Orcrist in one of the forks of the blade. I run to the warg and grab my sword, putting my foot on its forehead to give me more leverage as I pulled. It wouldn't budge. I kept pulling. Azog, using gravity and his superior weight and position, slowly pushes his blade further and further, and Thorin struggles to keep it away. I start to panic and I pull harder, it only moving slightly. As they stare at each other, Thorin suddenly slides his sword out of the fork, allowing Azog's blade to stab him through the chest. "NO!!" I scream, I see a glowing white and I pull my sword out of the wargs head. I charge at them as Azog smiles at thorin. My friend raises his own sword and stabs Azog through the heart; from their close quarters, Azog cannot avoid it. I stop in my tracks and pant heavily as my whole body shakes in fury but something tells me to wait. Thorin flips Azog over onto his back on the ice and forces Orcrist all the way through Azog and through the ice below. He seems to watch in slight satisfaction as azog dies. I slowly go infront of him and kick the orc go make sure. Thorin is kneeling ontop of the Corpse. He glances at me and smiled weakly.

"He's dead... he's finally dead.." he said as he struggles to get up. I pick him up with surprising ease and he glances at me. "You look like a goddess ash.." he chuckled. "Your glowing... like a torch... don't tell me your father's ego rubbed off on you that m-much..." he asked me. As tears streamed down my cheeks I forced a smile and nodded. "I promise it didn't... he's still a well groomed horse compared to me right now my friend.." I replied. "The waterfall..." he ordered weakly and I nodded, bring him over and then standing him on his feet. He stumbled to the edge of the frozen waterfall, looking out over the battlefield below, where the remaining orcs are being routed. Weak from his wound, he collapses on his back. Suddenly Bilbo comes running up in surprise. I sit beside thorin and hold his hand. He can't die.. not now.

I was getting small flashbacks of my grandfather passing after the war with the dragons. Mother insisted he was sleeping, i was a child. I shouldn't have known what death was, but I did... elves aren't supposed to die... he just happened to be an exception.

Bilbo's pov

"Bilbo..."I hear thorin say weakly as I go to his side. Ash is on the other holding his hand and crying silently as if he were already dead. "Don't move! Don't move! Lie still!" I tell at him as I examin his wounds. When I see the small bloody hole through him I recoil in shock. "I'm glad you're here... both of you..." thorin said with a weak smile. "Shh." I told him. He shouldn't be talking.... he needs to save his energy.

"I wish to part from you in friendship." He said to me kindly but I ignored what he was implying. "No. You are not going anywhere, Thorin. You're going to live." I insisted. "I would take back my words and my deeds at the gate. You did what only a true friend would do. Forgive me...I was too blind to see. I'm so sorry that I have led you into such peril." He apologised. I heard as choke back a sob as Thorin begins choking up blood.

"No, no, I'm glad to have shared in all your perils,Thorin - each and every one of them. And it's far more than any Baggins deserve." I tell him. "Farewell, Master Burglar. Go back to your books and your armchair. Plant your trees - watch them grow.... and fare well princess Lithônion. May you be free - and a friend to dwarves... be kind.. don't change and soon you'll end this retched hatred I started.." Thorin said as he struggles to choke. "If more people valued home & friends above gold this world would be a merrier place." Thorin said as he began to gasp deeply. I was watching him die before me. "No! No! No! No! No! No! Thorin! Oh don't you dare!" I scream at him. I see ash squeeze his hand like a scared child afraid to let go of their parent and go into a new strange world.

Then, thorin breathes out his last breath and dies.. he can't be.. I hear ash start to sob uncontrollably and hug her knees. "Thorin, Thorin, wake up. The eagles...the eagles...the eagles are here. Thorin...the eag..." i day as I hope he'll wake up but I get nothing and my own sobs over take me.

No one's pov

After Bilbo and ash run out of tears to cry they sit together staring off into the distance. Gandalf comes to them us and sits in the middle. They sit there, quietly, thinking. Ash weakly rests her head against the wizards shoulder, her throat too sore from sobbing to say any words.

Her 'glow' had gone away and she was covered in her own wet and dry blood. Gandalf cleans out his pipe noisily and as Bilbo goes to object he stops himself and simply goes silent. Ash glances back weakly to see the dwarves paying homage to their king. There was a sound of footsteps behind them making ash get up defensively and almost falling over as the pain had finally set into her body from the wings and injuries she has gotten. Only to see thranduil carrying fili's body and Tauriel holding kili's. Everyone stared at them in shock as they laid them down beside their uncle.

Dwalin went to storm at the elven king in anger
But ash caught him by her shoulder and shook her head. She stood in front of her father and looked at him in the eye. Thranduil still looked immaculate after battle, while ash looked like a walking corpse. He stared sadly at him child. "Balin. Have the funeral for thorin and his nephews tommorow. I will see that they have burials worthy of kings.." she said, her voice a bit raspy from her sobs. . Balin nodded slowly with a smile. "Thank you... I'll see you tomorrow... I'm welcome as a friend right?..." she asked. "Of course your welcome, your our friend as much as you were his" bofur told her with a smile and all the dwarves nodded.

She smiled slightly at them and then returned her stare to her father. He waited for her to yell at him but he was surprised to receive a hug. I glanced down at his child as she clung to him, similarly to how he remembered her doing as a child whenever he returned from a journey. He smiled slightly and hugged back. "Gi melin Ada..." she mumbled into his chest. He chuckles slightly and holds her close to him. "Gi melin Henig" thranduil replied. Bilbo couldn't even hide his smile from the sight.
