Thorin's pov

I heard a loud thud. Everyone seemed to heat it too and stood up. "Was that an earthquake?" Dori asked. "That, my lad...was a dragon." Balin replied. I worried for the half-ling and elfling.. had I sent them to their death?..

Bilbo's pov

I hide in a pile of gold with ash, so close To the Arkenstone. "The King under the mountain is dead. I took his throne." Smaug said as he looks for us. We burst out of the pile of gold beneath Smaug's claw. We run down a staircase, and leaps off the side as Smaug's head swings at us. "I ate his people like a wolf among sheep." Smaug continued. As the Arkenstone bounces rapidly down the mountain of gold, ash and I slides rapidly after it with Smaug in pursuit. "I kill where I wish, when I wish. My armour is iron!" He yells. The Arkenstone slides under a covered stone structure, we follow it and stay low. Smaug opens his wings and glides down to land atop the structure. "No blade can pierce me!" Smaug yells at us.

Smaug is searching for us as we hide under the structure. "It's Oakenshield. That filthy dwarvish usurper! He sent you in here for the Arkenstone, didn't he?" Smaug tells as he circles around the structure. Ash nudges me and points at the Arkenstone. It's at the other end of the structure. "No, no, no. I don't know what you're talking about." I reply to Smaug as we start to sneak over to the Arkenstone, but are forced to hide behind a pillar as Smaug looks beneath the structure.

"Don't bother denying it. I guessed his foul purpose some time ago. But it matters not. Oakenshield's quest will fail. The darkness is coming, it will spread to every corner of the land." Smaug told us. Ash's knees almost buckled and she cling to me to stand. Black liquid dropped from her mouth and she was covering her mouth to stop Smaug from hearing how heavily she was breathing. I wanted to console her and support her yet I didn't have time.

"You have been used, thieves in the shadows. You were only ever a means to an end. The coward Oakenshield has weighed the value of your life and found it worth nothing." Smaug told us, putting extra venom on the word 'nothing'. "No. No. No, you're lying!" I tell him. "What did he promise you? A share of the treasure? As if it was his to give. I will not part with a single coin. Not one piece of it." Smaug says. I hear him on top of the structure. I look concerned at ash, she wipes the liquid away and spits out the rest and then straightens herself up, simply nodding at me.

We make a dahs towards the arkenstone. Smaug sees us and whips his tail, sending me, ash, the Arkenstone, and gold flying. We tumbles and land against a pillar, making ash's condition worse. "My teeth are swords! My claws are spears! My wings are a hurricane!" He yells at us as he displays his wings, i suddenly notices a scale missing on the left side of Smaug's chest. I whispers to myself "So it is true. The black arrow found its mark.".

"What did you say??" Smaug asked. My heart stopped and then sped up. ""Uh, uh, I was just saying your reputation precedes you, oh Smaug the tyrannical. Truly, you have no equal on this earth." I say. As i speak, I slowly back up. I am standing in a bare, open spot, as Smaug faces me. Ash is still leaning against the pillar. As i finish speaking, i looks down and see the Arkenstone lying just a few feet from me, and i gazes at it.

"I am almost tempted to let you take it, if only to see Oakenshield suffer, watch it destroy him, watch it corrupt his heart and drive him mad." Smaug said. "Shut your mouth.. you vile beast.." I heard ash say, venom lacing her usual polite and sweet tone. I glanced to see her using her sword as a brace to gather her strength.

Suddenly Smaug begins to rear his head."But I think not. I think our little game ends here. So tell me, theives, how do you choose to die?" He asks us as his chest glows with a light from inside, and Smaug's head streaks forward, jaws open, to eat us. However, ash runs to me, diving and grabbing me. We tumble slightly out of the way. I grab her hand an put on my ring. We disappears, and Smaug's jaws close on empty space. Angrily, he raises his head again, and the glow from his chest travels up his neck; roaring, Smaug bellows out a massive wall of flames over the area in which we had been standing. Unseen by him, coins on the ground move as we runs away and up some stairs. Reaching a hallway, i exhaustedly pulls of the Ring and continues running. I can hear the dragons rage in the distance. I make sure not to let go of ash incase she were to collapse behind me.

Suddenly we run into thorin. He is weirding a sword and yells happily at us "You're alive!". "Not for much longer!" I tell him. "Did you find the Arkenstone?" He asked. "The dragon's coming and ash is dying!" I yell at him. "The Arkenstone!" He says to be sternly. We are both standing at the entrance to the tunnel. Thorin is blocking our way. We pause and look at each other for several seconds, then Thorin speaks again, more quietly, almost sinister "Did you find it?". "No. We have to get out." I tell him. I try to enter the tunnel, but Thorin swings his sword across it, blocking the entrance. He presses the blade against me, and i stumbles back, the sword still touching me. Ash looks shocked at thorin as she let's go and pings her sword at him, reluctantly and shakily pressing the tip against our companions chest.

"Thorin. Thorin!" I say, trying to bring him back to his senses. Thorin steps forward, forcing me to step back. Mine and ash's eyes are open in fear, and Thorin's face is steel and blank of emotion. "Think about what your doing.. this is an elvish blade. Im sure my father would be proud of me to smear dwarvish blood on it.. don't make me thorin, please" ash weakly says to him. Suddenly, i look off to the side, and Thorin hears a sound in that direction.

He turns and sees Smaug approaching over the mountain of treasure. Smaug, recognizing Thorin, snarls. Suddenly, the remaining dwarves run out of the tunnel and face Smaug, their weapons out. Smaug roars and rushes at them; his chest and neck glow orange. "You will burn!"he screams at us. Just as Smaug bellows fire at them, the dwarves, Ash and i turn and jump off the staircase. We tumble down the pile of treasure and land near the entrance to another tunnel, which we run into. Dwalin takes ash from me, carrying her. "Come on, Bilbo!" Dori yells at me, and the chase begins.
