Betrayal
No one's pov
The next day, as the sun sits high above erabor, Thranduil and Bard ride together to the front of the armies and approach their side of the broken bridge over the moat. From above the blockade, Thorin draws a bow and shoots an arrow at the ground directly in front of Thranduil and Bard, who immediately halt in surprise. The other dwarves stand proud beside him while ash and Bilbo look on in silence.
"I will put the next one between your eyes!" Thorin threatens as he draws his bow again, and the dwarves on the wall cheer and shake their weapons. Thranduil stares at Thorin angrily, then slightly tilts his head. Instantly, several rows of Elves near the front of the army pull out their bows, nock their arrows, and aim at the dwarves, all in one fluid motion. The dwarves' cheering cuts off abruptly as all of them but Thorin duck behind the ramparts. After holding the pose for a few seconds, and seeing that his child wasn't trying to avoid the arrows, Thranduil raises his hand, and the elves easily put away their arrows. Thorin still has his bow drawn, though. Ash clenched her fist and starts to shake as she holds the urge to knock it out of his hands.
"We've come to tell you: payment of your debt has been offered...and accepted." Thranduil said. "What payment? I gave you nothing! You have nothing!" Thorin said, venom resting in nothing and making ash almost break from the guilt. "We have this." Bard said, as he reached into his robe and pulls out the Arkenstone, holding it above his head. Thorin, shocked, lowers his bow. "They have the Arkenstone? Thieves! How came you by the heirloom of our house? That stone belongs to the king!" Kili screamed in fury.
Ash glanced at Bilbo and as soon as their eyes met she knew what he had done. They both nodded and looked back at the scene playing out before them.
"And the king may have it - in our good will." Bard began as he puts the Arkenstone back into his robe. "But first he must honor his word." He finished. Thorin whispers to himself, and the company listen to him patiently, not wishing to anger the king. "They are taking us for fools. This is a ruse, a filthy lie." Thorin whispered. Balin looks shocked that Thorin's mental state has deteriorated to the point at which he would even consider this. His dear friend wasn't even their anymore.
Thorin then yells out "THE ARKENSTONE IS IN THIS MOUNTAIN! IT IS A TRICK!". At the top of the ramparts, Bilbo steps out from the dwarves. He sighs and composed himself as he said "It-It's no trick. The stone is real. I gave it to them.". As Bilbo speaks, Thorin's expression changes to a mixture of sorrow and anger. Thranduil and Bard look worries, as they thought Bilbo was still safely in Dale. Thorin and the other dwarves look at Bilbo in shock.
"You..." thorin growls. "I took it as my fourteenth share." Bilbo explained. Ash realised what was going to happen before the others and started to stride towards them and grabs the hilt of her sword. "You would steall from me?" Thorin asked. "Steal from you? No. No. I may be a burglar, but I like to think I'm an honest one. I'm willing to let it stand against my claim." Bilbo said, confident in the idea his friend would understand. Yet that was sadly false hope...
"Against your claim?! Your claim! You have no claim over me you miserable rat!" Thorin screamed, throwing his bow down in anger and begging walk towards Bilbo. Ash blocked Bilbo with her body and her sword across her own chest. "Daro! Nátyë necindo!" She screamed at him.
"I was going to give it to you. Many times I wanted to, but..." Bilbo tried to explain but thorin spat out "But what, thief?!". Bilbo clenches his fist and yelled from behind his friend "You are changed, Thorin! The dwarf I met in Bag End would never have gone back on his word! Would never have doubted the loyalty of his kin! Would have never watched and done nothing as his friend was dying !".
"Do not speak to me...of loyalty!" Thorin yelled at them. He then ordered the other dwarves "Throw then from the rampart!". Bilbo looks shocked and ash doesn't move from the spot she is in. The other dwarves, rather than obeying Thorin, step away from Bilbo in confusion. Thranduil and Bard look concerned. Thorin is surprised that no one obeyed him.
"DO YOU HEAR ME?!" He screams. He tried to pull fili to him, but his nephew desperately pulls his arm till he is free. "I will do it myself!" He screams. He storms towards the pair. All thranduil saw was thorin grab his child and throw her to the side as if she were nothing, then he watched her head hit the side of the makeshift balcony and her crimson blood drip slowly down it as she dissapeared from view. "Ash!!" Dwalin screamed.
Thorin lunged forward and grabs Bilbo, shouting "CURSE YOU!". "No!" Fili screamed lunging at his uncle and missing. As Thorin struggles with Bilbo, the other dwarves leap forward, shouting, to pull Thorin away. Thorin manages to grab Bilbo and begins pushing him over the rampart. Dwalin supported ash, she groaned in pain and held her head. Blood streamed through her fingers as she glares daggers at her "friend".
"Cursed be the Wizard that forced you on this Company!" Thorin screamed at Bilbo. A voice breaks through the chaos, catching everyone's attention. It began loud "IF YOU DON'T LIKE MY BURGLAR OR MY ARCHER..." and then softened to the tone of Gandalf the grey. "Then please don't damage them. Return them to me! You're not making a very splendid figure as king under the mountain, are you? Thorin son of Thrain!" . Thorin slowly lets Bilbo up, and some of the other dwarves rush to help Bilbo up, Dwalin still supporting ash who used her sword to cut off the bottom rim of her shirt and wrap it around her head, wiping the blood away with her sleeve.
"Never again will I have dealings with wizards..." thorin began. Bofur motioned at ash and then pointed her and Bilbo to a rope tied to the wall "go..." he whispered. "Elvish mutts.. Or Shire-rats!" Thorin screamed. Bilbo throws his the coiled rope over the wall and clambers down, ash slowly following as the floor blurred in and out of focus from the trauma.
"Are we resolved? The return of the Arkenstone for what was promised." Bard asked. Thorin, breathing heavily, looks to a ridge in the distance, as if looking for someone or something. He doesn't even seem to be listening to them. "Give us your answer! Will you have peace or war?" Bard asks, a worried yet serious tone taking over. As Thorin bows his head, a large raven flies up to the ramparts and perches beside him. Thorin and the raven stare at each other.
"I will have war!" Thorin said in a venom filled tone. A rumbling is heard in the distance, and the armies look up to see the ridge being covered by troops of heavily armored dwarves, lead by a huge dwarf riding a battle-pig.
"Ironfoot..." Gandalf muttered, sounding stressed that he even saw the dwarf leader. Ash straightened her posture and made no eye contact with her kin as her father made worried glances at her.. that wasn't his little leaf.. The Erebor dwarves begin cheering and screaming as they see their backup arriving.
"Ribo i thangail!" Thranduil ordered as he rides through his army. his Elves and the Lakepeople turn away from the gates of Erebor and begin marching quickly toward the oncoming Iron Hills dwarves. Gandalf strides along with them, Bilbo rushing to keep up and ash staying close to the wizard's side. "Who is that? He doesn't look very happy." Bilbo asked, panting slightly. "It is Dain, lord of the Iron Hills - Thorin's cousin." Gandalf replies. "Are they alike?" Bilbo asked, sounding momentarily happy at the idea of someone like the old thorin.
"I always found Thorin the more reasonable of the two." The ageing wizard replied. The two armies halt a short distance from one another, and Dain rides his pig onto a rocky overlook to address the Elves and Men.
"Good morning! How are we all? I have a wee proposition, if you wouldn't mind giving me a few moments of your time. Would you consider...just sodding off!" The townspeople, clutching their weapons, step back in fear, while the Elves pull out their swords and step forward. Ash raises her hand so they don't move, and barely recognises her for who she was, they obeyed. "All of you - right now!" Dain continued to scream. "Stand fest!" Bard ordered, pulling the rains of his horse to keep it calm. Gandalf strode forward and began "Come now, lord Dain!" Trying to begin to talk some sense into him.
"Gandalf the Grey. Tell this rabble to leave, or I'll water the ground with their blood!" Dain threatened, smirking when a few of the townspeople flinched. "There is no need for war between dwarves, men and elves! A legion of orcs march on the mountain. Stand your army down!" Gandalf ordered, realising he had to be stern. Yet the lord of the iron hills didn't listen.
"I will not stand down before any elf! Not least this faithless woodland sprite!" He replied as he gestures toward Thranduil, who looks angry and rightfully so. Ash growled under her breath and muttered "Dôl gîn lost..".
"He wishes nothing but ill upon my people! If he chooses to stand between me and my kin - I'll split his pretty head open! See if he's still smirking then!" Dian yelled. Thranduil smiles furiously, and the Erebor dwarves cheer, get shut up when ash gave them a death glare a mother gives her child while scolding them.
"He's clearly mad, like his cousin!" Thranduil said, smile growing. "Ada!" Ash whisper yelled at him. "You hear that, lads?!" Dain asked his men as he turns and rejoins his army. "Come on! Let's give these bastards a good hammering!" He yells. His army cheers and a dwarf yells out commands. Weapons are raised followed by more cheering.
The Elves perform a complicated maneuver to put their shield-and-spear bearers at the front of the army, while the arches stand behind them. Thranduil moves slightly closer to his child. As both armies prepare to fight, a rumbling is heard at the base of a spur of the mountain. The armies grow silent as they turn to look. Gandalf whispers to himself "Were-worms!".
At the spur of the mountain where the rumbling is coming from, massive worms, hundreds of feet long and dozens of feet thick, break through the rocks. Their mouths are essentially giant drilling machines, strong enough to crush the toughest rocks in their jaws. The human, Elf, and dwarf armies look on in shock and fear.
"Oh, come on!" Dain yells mainly to himself. The worms suddenly retreat into the tunnels they'd made through the mountains approaching the Lonely Mountain. As the mist clears, we see Azog and a few other Orcs standing atop a hill. Ash freezes and goes pale, stumbling back and gripping the fur of her father's elk tightly making the poor beast grunt in pain. Behind them are several massive contraptions made of wood, rope, and cloth..
"Come forth my Armies!" Azog yelled. He motioned to an orc near him and the horribly thrown together machines let out a horn noise.. a battle horn.. legions of orcs poured out of the holes and marched towards them, murder on their minds.
Ash's POV
I painted heavily, I couldn't think straight. My mind was clouded with fear, he'll drag me away by my hair, he'll kill everyone I love and I'll go back to that hell of a life..
No.. I amn't letting That happened to me or anyone else every again.. I am going to slaughter him if it's the last thing I do. I let go of whatever beast I was clinging to and marched towards the wall of unmoving elves, only to be pulled back.
"Your not going anywhere little leaf." Father told me sternly. "Will you not order them to fight? They'll slaughter the dwarves !" I screamed at him. "From my memory they stole our Kin's heirlooms and almost smashed your skull Open." He replied bluntly. "And they're the only reason I haven't been taken by that monster for a second time ! They saved me. If I hadn't been traveling with them I would have never come home or I would be dead ada... please send the soldiers. If I can't fight let them. Do it for me.." I said to him. His heartstrings must have been tugged because he yelled "Fight my kin! Defend this land !" And the elves at our disposal ran, jumped over the dwarves and slaughtered orcs. I smiled at my father for the first time in years.. and it felt amazing
