Chapter Seven

The morning rose on a calm Friday morning. The pair were still under the covers, Dabi holding onto Fumi as if she were his own lovely treasure. Fumi was held tight against his chest, a feeling of safety helped her sleep. A feeling she had forgotten long ago.

Alas with morning comes the annoying rays of sunlight that always seem to slip by the blinds on her window. As the rays of light smacked her right in the face, she scrunched her nose in irritation as she felt herself being awakened. She slowly slipped her way out of his grasp, careful to not wake him, before grabbing her clothes and getting dressed and ready in the bathroom. She decided to finish the braid she didn't do last night and wear it for the day. Her braid rested on her right shoulder as she applied her quick makeup, simple mascara and eyeliner. She'd put on the lipstick on her way out since lipstick and food don't mix.

She headed downstairs to the kitchen before getting ideas for an easy breakfast. She grabbed her container of rice first, making sure to wash the rice first, and then getting it ready to be cooked in the rice cooker. As that was being handled, she grabbed a few eggs from the fridge and decided to make a simple fried eggs on top of the rice. She'd leave a few options of items on the table for them to choose from like sesame oil, soy sauce, garlic powder, pickled radishes, veggies, and some leftover steak and onions from the day before. Plenty of options to choose from.

Again, Dabi arose from the smell of freshly made rice and the sizzling sound from a frying pan. He couldn't hold in his frown, seeing he woke up alone. He was alarmed at how quickly he was getting used to sleeping with her. How she unknowingly would relax against his chest, how soft she was against him, even her slow sleeping breaths seemed to relax him as well. Knowing no harm would come to him while in her company; it gave him a new sense of peace.

He opted to get up and...well he's wearing his only set of clothes. He opted to go the bathroom and at least wash his face before going down for breakfast.

"Morning Dabi! Fried eggs and rice for breakfast. After this I'm heading to work but I'm only working till noon. I'll tell you why in a sec. Do you mind setting up the table? The food's almost ready."

"Sure." He said flatly. Of course he enjoys her kindness and hospitality, but he'd prefer not getting too attached. Sooner or later he's going to have to leave. He can't just sit around and play house here for the rest of his life. Not that it doesn't sound tempting....especially with how beautiful Fumi is looking. She had on a long red sweater that she'd have to slide the sleeves up to her elbows on occasion, and her skinny jeans with combat boots. The jeans hugged her thighs and hips perfectly it was starting to make him want to stay here. At least for a bit longer.

He finished setting up the table as she brought forth the bowls of rice with two eggs on top of each. The yolks we're still runny that when he poked the yolks they mixed deliciously into the rice. He watched as Fumi grabbed some soy sauce and Sriracha and poured a little onto her bowl, mixing it and creating a creamy like concoction. If it wasn't obvious, this wasn't a common breakfast of the league. Or on the streets. He didn't even remember if his mom ever made that. Is that a normal breakfast?

For all he knew with how weird she is it might just be a weird invention of hers.

"Wanna try some? It looks like you hadn't tried it this way before." Was it that obvious?

"Uh..."

"It's really good! Here." And she brought a spoonful up to his lips to try. He eyed her briefly before deciding to give in. If she wanted to poison him she had two days to do it already. So he took the bite.

And it was heavenly.

The creaminess of the yolk in the rice being cut by the soy sauce AND the Sriracha giving it a hint of spice...man. It's a complexity of flavors and all of them are good.

"It is good." He said, for once with enthusiasm.

"I'm glad you like it! It's just soy sauce and Sriracha, but sometimes I'll add garlic powder for some pizzazz. There's some steak and onion here too if you wanna add it to your bowl." She ended her words with a smile, happy to see him genuinely entertained. As he began to make his own concoction of a breakfast, he remembered something she said earlier.

"So why didn't you say you're leaving work early?" Catching her off guard, her piece of rice falling off her spoon and back into her bowl.

"Oh! Um...so, I have some news. And please don't get mad at what I'm going to-"

"You told the cops didn't you?"

Again she froze, worried he would hate her for going against his wishes. He knew this was his only chance though, he was being too stubborn to see it. At least that's what Fumi thought to herself.

"I told a hero." Dabi began to walk away from the table at those words, the little trust he had built with her already beginning to crack.

"Wait! Dabi you know we had to do something!" She pleaded as she followed him to the living room

"No, YOU didn't have to fucking do anything. I was gonna just drop off the plans and you decided to make this a big thing and for what?!" He exclaimed as he turned to face her.

"To save your ass! If they found out it was you they would have picked you up and tossed you into Tartarus! At least with me talking to a hero and explaining that you left the league and want to help heroes for a change, you'd actually get a chance at a normal life!" By this point she couldn't tell if she was more angry or sad. Upset would probably be a better description. Her hands were balled into fists as she tried to keep herself calm.

"Look at me and tell me I could do that!" He yelled as he approached her, his eyes wide in disbelief. "How could someone like me live a life like that huh?!"

"You can! That's why I put my job in jeopardy! That's why I'm leaving work early so you're not alone with cops and that's why I'm gonna do my best to keep you safe! So you can have that chance to live a life you want to! Not a life you were forced into."

"And what makes you think I want that life?" He said menacingly, his face mere inches from hers. Her eyes were welling up with tears, the small bit of control on her emotions slipping.

"Everyone wants at least a choice on how they get to live their life. I was trying to give your jackass a chance at that too. They'll be here at one. If you disappear by then they'll see you as nothing more than a villain that tricked some newbie hero for a place to crash. If you stay we can work on a plan to save those innocent people and clear your name as best we can. Your choice." And with that she headed for the door. She grabbed her purse and scarf on the hooks next to the door. Before she stepped out however, she paused at the doorframe, still not wanting to look at him.

"If you decide to go, I'll understand. Bye Dabi."

And she left, the door clicked behind her as she locked it and headed out to work. Dabi on the other hand was....perplexed to say the least.

And again, another breakfast was ruined.
