Chapter Nine
Soon the dreadful doorbell rang, Dabi and Fumi already finished with their meals. She straightened up her sweater before going to answer the door. For Dabi's safety he was quickly shoved into the kitchen beforehand in case it wasn't the cops. No need for civilians to know their neighbor is housing an ex villain.
Luckily it was the cops who had arrived on time. "Good afternoon Ms. Alvarez, I'm Mr. Yamada, chief of police. May we come in?"
"Yes, please make yourselves at home." The group of five gentlemen entered the abode, all out of uniform and in normal clothes, except one in a ridiculous Hawaiian shirt during the middle of fall. He stuck out like a sore thumb. They all stood in the living room, looking around the room before waiting on the chief to speak.
"Fatgum should be here in a moment. Now, he mentioned to me in a private conversation that you have a.....well a villain, in your home?"
"An ex-villain, yes. He has decided to stop villainy for the sake of protecting innocent lives at stake." A snort could be heard from the cops, stifling their chuckles.
"I see. And are they here?"
"Yes but I prefer to have them be introduced when Fatgum arrives."
"I understand but for everyone's safety I prefer to see for myself who our mystery guest is."
"....very well." She turned her heel as she walked toward the kitchen. "Dabi come on out, the cops wanna make sure you're real."
As he stepped out the cops, minus the chief, were flabbergasted. Fumi made sure to keep her eyes on the cops as she edged her way closer to Dabi. The lower rank cops were shaking at seeing the heavily scarred and burned man make his appearance.
Without an ounce of hesitance the cop in the Hawaiian shirt pulled out a hidden gun and pointed it at Dabi before pulling the trigger. The loud bang was followed by two more, the noise echoing throughout the home. Dabi was frozen like a statue, the blood drained from his face. He could feel himself panting, whether it was from fear or adrenaline he couldn't tell. One thing was for sure though.
Not a single bullet hit him.
Fumi stood firm in front of him, her chest had two holes in them where blood dribbled down her sweater. What gave him the biggest fright of his life was seeing her face. She had her back to him as she looked up toward him, a bullet dug right into her forehead. Her eyes were wide as the rest of her face was emotionless. The hands at his side began to tremble, getting closer to her arms to hold her up.
"Fumi?" He whispered, too startled to raise his voice.
"Hold your fire damn it!!" Said the chief of police. He glared at his subordinate as the cop hurriedly put his gun down.
In a moment however her dull gaze morphed into the narrowing of her eyes as she snarled toward the police. "Who. The. FUCK! DID THAT?!"
She turned her head back at the police as she slowly walked forward, the wound on the lower part of her chest beginning to heal. Piece of metal could be heard falling and hitting the floor, the bullet rattling as it rolled around the living room floor.
"I invite you into home, try to be honest with you, and- you." She paused, noticing it was the Hawaiian shirt cop who was guilty. "You fucking shot me!" She exclaimed, the bullet stuck in her upper chest also popping out onto the floor.
"I-I'm sorry, he's a-a-a v-villain!" He tried to reason, his grip on japanese now slipping. Dabi was also rightly pissed in this matter. The bullets were meant for him. Had Fumi not taken the blow he would certainly be dead because of some stupid rookie. His flames began to grow as he cocked his head back and gave his signature smirk.
"Scared you didn't I rookie?"
Fumi quickly put her hand up, before looking at Dabi and quickly saying "I got this." He grimaced but obliged, irritated he can't just kill off the damn rookie. His flame reduced until they disappeared, a sense of relief washing on the cops' faces.
"You scared?" She questioned, grabbing him by his shirt so he was forced to look down at her. He said a few apologies before nodding his head frantically. The chief of police attempted his best to control the situation with an apology and asking for Fumi to let go of the cop. All his words fell on deaf ears as she kicked the back of the legs of the rookie before slamming his face to the ground. When she pulled him up by his hair she reminded him of useful information.
"Remember that you tried to kill a hero today. And a key witness for what was going to be the biggest case of your life. And you fucked it up, because you got so fucking trigger happy." She said as she stared him down, her voice slick with venom and dark. "The next time you pull out your gun at me or him I'm gonna put a bullet in your chest and see if you can regenerate like me."
"Enough Ms. Alvarez!" Began the detective. "He will be reprimanded by the police department, not by some vigilante and her bodyguard."
"Vigilante?!" She said with a dark laugh. "I'm a hero. Four years of my life studying for this career just to get an entry level job while you floated around six years in the academy and spent the rest of your time hoping all your superiors either died or moved away so you could be promoted! So don't give me shit about my job. I actually teach my newbies how to do their job."
"You threatened to kill him!"
"He ATTEMPTED to kill me and your key witness for this case! If anyone's gonna be filing a complaint it's gonna be me. Badge numbers, now."
"What the cuss is going on?!" Yelled Fatgum as he ran into the house. "Why are neighbors talking about gunshots?!"
He looked at his little medic hero to see a bullet sliding out of her forehead, blood streaks now stained on her face. She caught the bullet and showed it to him.
"Your class act cops here had a rookie and a loud mouth in their midst. The one in the Hawaiian shirt shot me 3 times and the one in the ridiculous trench coat harassed me for teaching the newbie a lesson."
"You threatened to kill him!" Reasoned the detective.
"Are you actually forgetting the 3 bullets I had to force out of my body? All because he got scared of seeing Dabi?? You knew you were going to see an ex-villain. If you can't handle seeing one then you sure as hell can't work with one." She turned to Fatgum who by now had balled up his fists at seeing her with holes and blood on her sweater, knowing her story was true. "I want them both off this case."
"Done."
"What?!" Screeched the detective, the rookie to scared to say anything else.
"What do you mean what? You're lucky of my quirk or else you'd have a dead body to worry about and Dabi trying to teach you a lesson instead of me. Believe me you got the easy way out today."
"Alright alright everybody just take a moment to chill. Hatsuharu, please call a replacement for them two. And have them be in uniform so we can act like they are the ones responding to the gunfire complaints." Said Fatgum as he led Fumi back toward the kitchen as well as Dabi. "Hello Dabi. I can't say it's a pleasure to meet you, but I hope we can put aside our differences to help in this case together."
"...we've got a lot of differences" he said, still glaring at the rookie who tried to kill him.
"I've got a feeling those bullets weren't met for Fumi were they?" Asked Fatgum, already knowing the answer.
"Yeah, he tried to kill me and she stepped in." Fatgum nodded before leading Fumi into the kitchen and grabbing a rag to wet and wipe off the blood.
"That was a dumb thing you did kid." He said as he wiped the blood from her forehead.
"I know, but they were going to kill him. The key witness for our case. How could I not step in?"
"I see your point. But remember what the doctor said. You can regenerate but your body has limits too."
"I know, I feel my skull still trying to regenerate. It could take an hour or two to be back to normal. And when it's done I'm gonna be exhausted."
"We'll try to keep this meeting short, have Dabi give over the plans as well as what he knows and settling on a deal for him."
"Sounds good."
When he finished wiping her face clear of blood he helped her over to Dabi. She seemed fine since the bullet holes had closed, but she was struggling to stand and to focus on her surroundings while she healed such deep wounds.
"Dabi, I know I don't know you very well but Fumi seems to trust you and that's about all I can ask for right now. Would you mind watching her while I talk to the cops? I need to give them a little lecture on etiquette before we begin."
"Sure, I can watch her." He handed her over to him, still a bit uneasy before heading towards the police.
"You okay princess?" He said as his brows furrowed at her state. "I thought you heal fast."
"I can heal cuts fast. Bullets going through bone and organs? Takes a little more time. The more time I need to heal, the more sleepy I get." She said as she leaned herself on him. The warmth coming from him was always so inviting. He placed his hands on her arms, attempting to keep her up as she leaned against him for support.
"That was pretty badass though. But it was reckless and you know it princess."
"So I should've let you die? Fat chance. Only one of us can regenerate so I took the blow."
"Didn't it at least hurt?" He said, getting upset at how reckless she was with her own body.
"Oh hell yeah, I haven't been shot in a while so I forgot the pain from the force of the stupid bullet. But that doesn't change the fact that you were in danger. I stepped in so you were safe. That's all. Stop worrying when you know I'm okay."
"I'm not worried."
"Yeah that's why you're holding me like a feeble patient."
"I'm holding you like this because you're feeble right now."
"...touché."
