Chapter Fourteen
They were enjoying the sounds of the night. Dabi laid on the bed along side Fumi, their feet dangling off the side of the bed.
"So you had it rough?" Asked Dabi, already knowing the answer.
"Yeah, I'm sure your childhood wasn't something to scoff at either."
"I'd...rather not talk about it." He said quietly, still not sure why he feels like he can trust this woman. He's never had a safe person. No unconditional love From his parents to guide him.
"That's fair." She said as she looked up at the ceiling. She didn't notice how he turned to look at her, admiring her strength in dealing with her past.
He looked at how her face was in a calm manner. Her face was relaxed, seeming relieved at telling someone else about her past. Her eyes glimmered from the moonlight, her hair looked beautiful as it was spread out on the bed. And her lips looked so...
Dabi turned away quickly, not wanting to finish that thought. He placed a hand on his chest, wondering why it beat so fast.
"I should head down, make sure the kids aren't causing a ruckus." She said as she sat up, fixing her hair.
For some reason Dabi....didn't want her to leave. Not his side at least. But he refused to follow someone like some lost puppy; so he watched her form as she left the room, her beer bottle left on the nightstand.
Fumi headed downstairs, a small smile on her lips and her heart warm. Luckily the older kids were alright. They were watching an action movie and Yuichiro had grabbed a little bowl extra of pasta.
"Everything okay guys?" Fumi asked, checking their folders to be sure they finished their homework.
"Yeah" they all mumbled together, still absorbed in the movie.
Fumi smiled, those kids gave her so much happiness. And they surprisingly enjoyed having Dabi around too. She was glad that he seemed to do well with kids. It showed that he could live in society. He could live a normal life one day.
"Miss Fumi? Where's your villain boyfriend?" Asked Maki, the girls giggling at her words.
"For the last time guys..." She said in slight annoyance, rubbing her temple before she spoke. "He is not a villain anymore."
"But he's still your boyfriend."
"I don't have a boyfriend!"
"Miss Fumi aren't you going to at least make him your boyfriend before you share a bed?"
"I swear you guys..." She grumbled, doing her best not to to shout as the kids upstairs were already asleep.
Dabi had relented, wanting to still be near his human Tylenol. "Whats taking that damn princess so long." He grumbled, a bit annoyed how well that nickname fit her.
He walked down the stairs quietly, pausing as he heard the kids talking to Fumi about him. He was glad she defended him about not being a villain, but felt his heart leap out of his chest that she didn't correct them at first about him not being her boyfriend.
He stayed hidden, listening in on the conversation.
"Guys, I'm not gonna make him a.... Boyfriend... Just to nap together!" Fumi said in exasperation.
"But don't you want a boyfriend miss Fumi? That last one was a jerk."
"Which is exactly why I don't need another one Maki." Fumi finished, wanting to be done with this conversation. Yuichiro looked around, putting his bowl down before speaking.
"I don't like him. But I can tell you guys are good together."
"Um... Thank you yuichiro, but he's not my boyfriend."
"Miss Fumi!" Interrupted Yuki. "Don't you want him to be your boyfriend?"
"Please stop asking me this you guys."
"They keep asking because didn't answer yuki's question." Muttered Yuichiro.
"Guys it's... complicated." Dabi's heart raced as he heard that. Is it a good complicated? A bad one?
"How?" They all asked. Fumi groaned, tired of this question. She scooted a few to the side as she sat on the couch in the middle, a few kids laying on her as she spoke.
"He's a sweet guy. Sweeter than he thinks. And...he protected me. Took care of me when I used my quirk too much. It...would be nice....to have someone like that by my side."
Dabi could feel his cheeks warm at her words. He hated the sappy stuff but this? This was....different.
"But... I've only known him for a few days. And besides, he's got bigger things to think about besides some girl like me."
His tiny smile faded at her words. 'some girl'?
She wasn't just some girl, she's....
'What is she to me?' He thought, not having one word to describe her with.
I mean there were plenty: short, feisty, kind, caring, loving, soft, a spitfire. But none of those words encased who she truly was. Or at least what Dabi felt for her.
"So you won't make him your boyfriend miss Fumi?" They asked, wondering.
"No guys, besides he probably doesn't see me as more than a nurse hero that's helping him out. Now come on, time for bed." The children groaned, reluctantly turning off the TV and putting all the plates in the sink and the coloring books in the respective shelf.
Dabi crept back up the stairs, going back to their room before the kids spotted him. The children toddled off the guest room where there was a bunk bed and inflatable mattresses littered the floor. As they shut the door, Dabi looked over to her nightstand, the beer bottles still there. He eyed them for a moment before taking them downstairs.
Fumi was still up, scrubbing the dishes while listening to some music play on her phone on the counter. Dabi walked in, hesitantly holding the bottles. It's more like he wanted a reason to see her than to actually clean.
Fumi looked tired, yawning on occasion as she washed the dishes. "Hey dabi, you can just toss those in recycling."
He nodded before taking them to the correct bin. "Princess you're tired. Just....get some sleep. I'll finish this."
"Nah, I'll be okay. Thank you though Dabi." She said unconvincingly with another yawn.
"Here." He said softly, gently grabbing her by the waist and hand to turn her away from the sink. "Now go to sleep before you pass out." He said, wondering why his voice has gone soft.
A blush crept onto her cheeks as he touched her. She merely nodded, defeated by his kindness and her own exhaustion. She walked upstairs to her room, where she quickly changed to her pajamas and fell asleep in minutes.
Dabi washed the dishes, occasionally changing the songs on her phone. When he finished and put them away, he turned off all the lights downstairs and head upstairs. He went to their room and saw her fast asleep, hugging one of her plushed animals.
As sappy as it looked, he couldn't help it. He was officially, wholeheartedly, undoubtedly....smitten.
His trademark smirk was gone, a simple soft smile and a warm heart replacing it. He slowly crept to the bed, pulling back the sheet to slide into bed, his arms careful not to wake her as he held her close against his chest.
"G'night princess." He whispered, laying his head on the pillow. His lips were close to the top of her head, tempted to kiss it. But he refused, too sappy for his liking. He closed his eyes as he inhaled, the soft smell of her perfume filling his nostrils as the scent pulled him to sleep.
