Chapter Five
"You have WHO in your house??" Fatgum declared in his office. Fumi shushed him before whispering the name again.
"SHHH!" It's Dabi, and he means no harm."
"No harm?! He-"
"Lower your voice dang it!" She said in a harsh whisper.
"Fine fine fine. Why is he there?"
She began to retell the events of the night before and what he said about Shigaraki's plan. Fatgum's brows furrowed as he listened to every word, worried for his little medic hero. She seemed so sincere in helping others that she sometimes forget to take care of herself. The overtime on her paychecks and the bags under her eyes as enough proof. Though she is still a bit young, she is a good judge of character. If she could trust Dabi, he might have to too.
" So he's really giving up his life of crime?"
"Yeah, and he's at my house now. He really means well. I mean he gave up his only safe place to steal the plans so we could save the innocent. He says Shigaraki is going too far now. He's not even following his mantra he just wants to cause harm to everyone. Dabi only joined villainy for revenge on heroes, not to hurt the innocent. That's why he left. I can convince him to cooperate with us. But in return I want to shorten or get rid of any jail time."
"Get rid of?! Fumi do you remember his crimes? That can't just be washed away."
" I know. But this plan Tai, if what he says is true, he could be the reason we save thousands of lives. And if he tells us the LOV's hideout spots we could possibly even catch them! And throw the rest of them in Tartarus."
"That's a mighty big if Fumi." He said as he crossed his arms.
"Wouldn't you wanna take that bet if it meant we'd be rid of the league?"
He pondered for a moment, weighing the pros and cons of what could happen. Fumi shuffled around a bit, nervous he'll say no. Truth be told she didn't want to throw Dabi out onto the street. He'd be in danger and would probably be forced back into villainy to get by. She wanted to at least give him a chance to get out of that. And if Fatgum said no, she would probably still hide him, making her an accomplice.
God what was she thinking? Losing her hero license over him??? Just so he MIGHT be able to live a normal life? That's crazy.
And yet, realistically speaking, she probably would do it.
"Alright, I'll bring in the chief of police to your house tomorrow with a few more cops for safety. I'm going too. And for the love of Kami please lock your door and keep an eye on him."
"Yes dad I will." She says with a grin.
"It's only an eight year difference Fumi I'm not your dad."
"Would you prefer I call you bro?"
"I prefer you get out of my office before I change my mind." He said annoyed as he went to open the door.
"Yes sir!" She said before zipping out of there and back to her desk. She plopped down in her chair before putting her hand on her chest. It was beating like crazy. She finally let out a breath she didn't know she was holding in as she thought over the good news. Dabi would be pissed but he knows it's his only chance. He had to take this chance. A chance to prove that while yes he did commit crimes he was also forced by the league to do it. Not to mention the plan he stole could help save thousands of people.
She let out a sigh as she went back to her duties, the pile of paperwork beckoning her to be done before 5pm.
And so it was true, Fumi was ecstatic with how well the talk with Fatgum went that she finished her paperwork at 4:30. She usually would work overtime since she had no one waiting at home but today was different. She'd only made him lunch so he'd probably get hungry for dinner time. And if she left now to start cooking the food would be ready on time. She stretched in her chair before saying her goodbyes to those in the office and heading out.
A jingle of keys could be heard as she unlocked the door. She waltzed into her home, a smile on her face as she tossed her jacket onto the couch. Her smile faltered when she saw the black remote on the couch. She cocked her head to the side before closer inspection. The backside was a bit melted, sealing the portion that's meant to open to replace the batteries. Damn it. She sighed as she placed the remote back, thinking of ways to be able to open that back flap again.
"Hey I'm home! You there?" She said out loud, only now noticing her new sullen companion was nowhere in sight.
"Dabi?" She said, a bit quieter this time. As she approached the hallway she could see the bathroom light was on, with the door open.
"You okay?" She added, getting concerned for the ex villain.
"I'm fine just stay out." Finally, a response from him. She nodded and was about to waltz into the kitchen when she heard the distinct sound of glass shards. She froze on the spot, knowing he's more than likely injured. No wonder he told her to stay out. She furrowed her brows in concern as she made her way to the bathroom. Fumi opened the door, revealing a bleeding Dabi on the bathroom floor, shards of glass still in one hand.
And the rest of the mirror still on the wall.
"I said get out!" He exclaimed, his eyes burning with rage. Shards of glass were surrounding him, some more noticeable than others.
"You're hurt." Was all she said before walking towards him. His glare could be felt even when she looked away, only focused on his hand. As she examined his hand he couldn't even look at her. He was filled with anger, and now with a twinge of embarrassment for having her heal him. Again.
"What did the mirror say to you to make you wanna pick a fight with it?" She said with a laugh as she carefully plucked out the shards from his hand. He remained stoic as she began to heal him, her hand showing open wounds around her knuckles as a drop of blood fell from the wound and glided down her hand.
"You know.... you can tell me what happened. It's not like I'm gonna run to the reporters about it. I just wanted to be sure you're okay."
"Why do you care anyways?" He said, looking at her for once. As her wound healed on its own, she smiled sadly as if remembering a bad memory.
"If I don't care, who will? If I don't help, who would? I don't help to make myself feel good or to make big money." She said as she rose to wash her hands.
"I help because I want to be the person who I needed long ago. You don't have to tell me what happened. And I needed a new mirror anyways; but don't feel like I'm just some other hero who thinks they're better than everyone. Believe me I know I'm not. I'm not some superhero that wants to be on the front page of an article. I do my job. That's all." She left the bathroom soon after and returned with a broom and a dustpan.
"I suggest you carefully shake off your clothes so I can clean up the glass." Said Fumi, waiting on Dabi to stand. He stood up slowly, moving his shirt a bit and moving his pants to shake off any shards of glass before he stepped away. Sounds of shards clinking against one another could be faintly heard as he dusted himself off. He watched as she went ahead to gently sweep up the glass, making sure to sweep all around the bathroom before emptying out the dustpan in the trash bin.
"...I'm sorry. About the mirror."
"It's okay. Seriously though what got you so worked up? It must have been pretty bad for that kind of reaction."
"I'd rather not talk about it."
"Was it a hero thing?"
"I said I don't-"
"Wait! Was it that Endeavor interview today? The whole office hates him too!" She said with a laugh.
"You do?"
"Yeah! Just 'cause he's a number one hero doesn't mean he's a good person. I knew his youngest kid while I was still a senior at UA. Endeavor is nothing short of a dick."
"He's a fucking dick."
"Exactly! Jeez. Is that what rattled you today? Don't sweat it, we all changed the channel in the break room when his interview came up. Now come on, since we both had to suffer his ungodly interview briefly, I'm gonna order food tonight. Any suggestions?'
"Um...I don't know."
"Come on, it's my treat. Whatever you want. As long as it's not expensive....I don't get paid till tomorrow."
"...." He looked away, the tiniest hint of pink on his cheeks formed as he rubbed the back of his neck. "Whatever is fine."
"Hmmm... Do you like ramen? I think a nice hot soup would be good during this cold."
"Sure."
"Great!" Before he knew it, the ramen was already there, as well as a few snacks she had also ordered. An order of takoyaki and some edamame were spread onto the table as they began to eat. But no one took a bite. It was a little awkward, her optimism knowing no bounds and his pessimism leading them to a standstill.
"Thanks, for the meal." He said, his eyes trained on the ramen.
"No problem! Hope you enjoy it."
After a few moments of silence, something Fumi cannot stand, she opted for something better.
"Okay I hate silence let's go to the living room to eat." She grabbed her bowl and headed to the living room, placing her food on the coffee table as she grabbed the remote to find a movie. Dabi reluctantly followed her with his food, not wanting to eat alone.
"Okay so horror or comedy?" She asked as she went to the search bar.
"Whatever is fine."
"It's not fine Dabi, pick one."
"I said whatever."
"It's not- oooh I see."
"See what princess?"
"First I know you say that just to annoy me but SECOND you just don't want to admit you prefer a comedy over a horror movie." She said matter of factly before looking in the comedy section. He glared at her, the pink dusted on his cheeks betraying his signature glare.
"Fine."
"I knew it!"
"Just pick a damn movie."
