Chapter Eleven
Fumi was the first to awaken. She slowly opened her eyes to see herself cuddle against Dabi. A little blush formed on her cheeks from embarrassment. In her tired state she dragged him to nap with her. She sighed before sitting up and feeling refreshed. Her moment of joy was short lived as she went to check the time on her phone.
"Shit I slept that long?! Dabi!" She exclaimed as she gently shook him awake. Dabi on the other hand did not wake up refreshed. He woke up groggy, with little to no sense of time of day nor what was going on. "Dabi! We gotta get ready the kids are gonna be here soon!" She exclaimed as she hurriedly got out of bed, brushed her hair, tied it up in a bun, and was going to be heading out of the room.
Dabi scratched his head, unsure of what she meant or what was happening, especially in his groggy state. "We have kids?"
"Geez, just, I'll be downstairs." She said, blushing madly at his words before scurrying off to the kitchen.
"We have kids?" He said again, more to himself this time. He shook his head in an attempt to gain some sense as he awakened more. "What kids?" He opted to quickly get up and wash his face before heading downstairs, kids not being part of his itinerary for today.
As he reached the kitchen he saw Fumi zooming across the kitchen. She put water to boil, she grabbed meatballs from the freezer, she put a big box of noodles on the counter, she was pulling out a box of juices from a small closet, she was doing everything.
".....need a hand?" He asked, almost a little nervous to even ask since she was working so quickly.
"Yeah! Could you put these juices in the fridge please? Soda would've been cheaper but if Hana gets soda she won't sleep for the night."
"Sure." He said before filling up the fridge with a mix of apple juice and grape juice mini bottles. "So, who's kids are coming?"
"Oh! Uh, just kids around the area, they usually come for dinner and a place to sleep on Saturdays."
"A place to sleep? They're homeless?"
She stopped in her tracks at his words. Unsure how to exactly answer him. "Not all of them. Some just need a safe place once a week. To wash clothes, get help on homework, sit down to enjoy a meal, stuff like that." She checked on the pot of water, adding the noodles as she saw the pot begin to boil. She also had a small pot of vegetables boiling. When the vegetables were done she poured them into a blender before having the blended veggies added into the spaghetti sauce. Dabi eyed her, a brow of his lift in question at her actions.
"They don't get a lot of nutrients so I add some stuff to their food. Don't judge me." She said she pointed at him with the spoon. He put his hands up in surrender, knowing she did it for the kids for a good reason.
In a moment the doorbell rang just as the food was done. She hurried over and opened the door. Dabi hid in the kitchen, thinking the kids would be spooked at seeing him.
"Hi Ms. Fumi!" They all said as they marched in and dumped their belonging in the living room.
"Hi guys!" She said with a smile. There were five children: the eldest was Yuichiro, then Maki, Yuki, Yuka, and Hana. The oldest of the gang was 13, Maki was ten, Yuki was 9, Yuka was 7, and little Hana was 4. Yuichiro was the leader of the gang so he spoke first.
"So what's for tonight Fumi?"
"It's Ms. Fumi to you kiddo. And first is laundry. Everybody! Uniforms and such in the basket!"
Everyone hurried to unzip their backpacks or grab their plastic bags and empty the clothes into a basket left out for them.
"Also! I have a guest in this house. He's going to be my roommate for some time so you guys are gonna keep seeing him."
"Did you get a boyfriend?" Asked Maki as she and Yuka giggled.
"No ladies, no man can handle this fire!" She said before laughing. "But he is a good friend of mine so I want you guys to be on your best behavior."
"Of course you show your boyfriend off and expect the runts to behave." Muttered Yuichiro.
"He's not-! Alright whatever I'm just gonna bring him out. Dabi could you come here please?"
"You sure that's a good idea princess?"
"He calls you princess?!" Exclaimed little Hana, tugging on Fumi's shirt excitedly.
"He's just being sarcastic honey- yes Dabi just come on out."
After a few moments he steps out of the kitchen. He had left his jacket upstairs so his burnt arms were in full view. The smaller children took a few steps back as the older kids grabbed the younglings and put them behind them. The older kids knew of his notorious past and Yuichiro grabbed Fumi by the wrist.
"We have to go! He's a villain!" He said as he kept tugging on Fumi. Dabi took a step back, a sense of shame washing over him as he frightened the kids just by being seen.
"Guys stop! I know. I know he had a bad past. But he stopped it. He's a good guy now."
"But Ms. Fumi! He works with the league!!"
"Not anymore. He is doing his best to be a better person. And I'd appreciate it if you turned off your quirk Yuichiro." The floor was soft and Dabi could sense himself slowly seeping into the floor, his eyes widened as he frantically looked around to see he was the only one sinking. "Now Yuichiro." He grumbled before turning it off, Dabi now back to having his feet firmly on the floor.
"You promise?" Asked Yuichiro, still putting Yuki and Yuka behind him.
"I promise he will not harm you guys. He is my roommate and he hasn't hurt me during the entire time he's been here."
"So, you're dating a villain?" Questioned Yuki as he slowly stepped away from Yuichiro.
"He's not a villain. And we're not! Not dating. He is a roommate."
"Wait does that mean all five of us have to sleep in the living room?"
"No Yuka I'll bunk with Dabi so you guys can still take the guest room."
"So you ARE sleeping with him?" Asked Maki, the gang no longer hiding behind the older kids.
"Guys! Jesus, do you remember my quirk? Well Dabi has chronic pain and my quirk helps with that. And I get cold at night so his quirk helps with that. That's all!"
"So it's like a friend with benefits thing?" Questioned Yuichiro, now more concerned than scared.
"And where did you learn that phrase?! And no, that's not what it- I'm done explaining. Go ask Dabi questions while I put these to wash." Fumi ended before grabbing the laundry basking and escaping this very awkward interrogation.
Dabi couldn't help stifling his laugh, watching how the kids that turned on him quickly turned on her.
"So are you really good again?" Asked Yuki, taking a step closer to him.
"Hm? Oh...well sort of. I don't do bad stuff and since I have to pay for what I did do I'm in house arrest. Which means I stay here and can't go out."
"Okay, so you're like in timeout?"
"Yeah, a really long timeout."
"Do you like Ms.Fumi?" Asked Maki as she approached.
"She already said we're just roommates."
"That doesn't mean you don't like her." She said as she and the girls giggled minus Hana.
"What's with the third degree? I don't have to answer that." He said, a little irritated at how quickly the girls were still getting under his skin.
"You're not gonna hurt her are you?" Asked Yuichiro as he leaned against the doorframe.
"No kid, I'm not going to hurt her."
"Good, and I'm not a kid my name's Yuichiro."
"Got it." By now most of the kids had surrounded him, more curious now than scared. Except for Hana. She was still scared.
"Hana?" Asked Fumi as she came back to the living room. What's wrong honey?"
"He's scary." She whispered, scared he might hear her.
"Why do you say that?"
Hana held her hand, scared of the tall man. "He has staples, and his skin is scary."
"Hana, you know how your quirk makes you weird looking too?" Said Fumi, remembering the first time she saw the little girls power. She can hide in shadows. To be able to do that however she turns into a Boogeyman-esque looking creature. She cried the first time she transformed, scaring herself when she looked in the mirror. "Dabi's quirk hurts his skin. That's why he looks like that all the time."
"Oh. So, he's not scary?"
"No honey, he's just in pain sometimes because he used to use his quirk a lot, which makes his skin look like that."
"Oh okay. Mr. Dabi?" Hana asked, quickly grabbing Dabi's attention as he made his way over, happy to escape from the kids trying to play matchmaker over there.
"Yeah kid?"
"Is it true your skin hurts?" Dabi looked at Fumi before nodding.
"My skin is sensitive because of my fire." He said before kneeling down in front of her. "My fire is called hellfire. It's so hot it's blue instead of red. And it's so hot my skin can't handle it for long. So your friend Fumi helps me when I'm in pain."
"Can I touch it?" He muddled it over before nodding and moving his arm closer to her. Hana's little index finger gently tapped his arm before rubbing it lightly. She let out a giggle before moving her hand away. "It tickles!" And for once, Dabi let out a small smile. He was used to people calling his skin coarse, rough, ugly, but not ticklish. It was refreshing. He smiled before nodding and standing back up.
"Well kids, dinner is done. Is your homework done too?"
"C'mon Ms. Fumi we just got here! We're starving!" Said Maki followed by the other kids nodding and agreeing.
"Fine, dinner first. But no napping right after, you guys finish your homework and then we can all watch a movie."
"Can we watch the new Pinocchio?" Asked Yuka. Yuki and Yuichiro whined about it but Fumi agreed with Yuka.
"It is your week to choose so sure!" Hana cheered as the rest made their way their to the kitchen to watch Fumi serve the food so they can all eat together in the living room.
