Newt and Cora found the Obscurus in the subway. He walked through the tunnels quietly. The Obscurus gently swirled in the air above the train tracks.

Newt was hiding behind a pillar as he talked to it. "Credence. It's Credence, isn't it? I'm here to help you, Credence. I'm not here to hurt you," Newt reassured.

The sound of soft footsteps could be heard. The pacing was deliberate. Newt moved out from behind the pillar and stepped onto the train tracks. Credence was a shadow inside of the Obscurus. He was scared.

"I've met someone just like you, Credence. A girl - a young girl who'd been imprisoned. She'd been locked away and she'd been punished for her magic."

Credence listened. He never knew there was another person like him. Slowly, the Obscurus left, leaving only Credence, huddled on the train tracks. Newt crouched on the floor. Credence looked at him with hope.

"Credence, can I come over to you? Can I come over?" Newt asked.

He didn't respond.

Newt tried a different approach. "Mary is your adopted mother, isn't she? I think - I think I may know who your real mother is."

"A lullaby," added Cora. "Have you ever hummed something but never knew where you knew it from?"

She began to hum the lullaby she always sang to Credence when he was a baby. He stepped away from his Obscurus, humming the tune to match with her.

Credence hesitantly reached forward for Cora, but a light and struck Newt beside Cora. Graves marched down the tunnel with intense purpose as Credence ran away. Graves stood on the platform, continuing to duel with Newt, who stood on the train tracks. Credence cowered behind him. Graves cast a spell that rippled along the train tracks and down the tunnel, finally blasting into Newt. He landed on his back. Cora unfurled her wings and shielded Newt, taking the blow of his attacks on her back and wings. Graves had a crazed look on his face. Credence was shaking, unable to control his sorrow and anger before he finally turned back into an Obscurial.

"Credence!" Cora shouted. "Don't let it consume you. I haven't had time with you yet."

The Obscurus was slowly shrinking, letting her words sink in. She wanted to bond with him. The Obscurus was seeming more human-like. Once it fully became human - became Credence - Cora sunk to her knees, the adrenaline finally sinking away to feel her injuries on her back in the form of whip marks.

However, he and Cora were surrounded by Aurors, who were shooting spell after spell. Cora unfurled her wings once more and shielded both her and Credence, taking more injuries. She wouldn't be able to keep up. Her wings were beginning to darken and wither, feathers following off after each spell. Credence shook uncontrollably as the Obscurus was threatening to burst out once more at the sight of his mother giving up her life for him.

"Stop! Don't shoot!" Newt shouted.

"Step away," Madam Picquery ordered Cora.

Cora didn't respond. She didn't have the strength. Soon, she collapsed against Credence's chest as he held her up. Her wings drooped down, sagging against the ground.

"Wands down," Madam Picquery ordered.

The Aurors obeyed.

"Don't hurt him," pleaded Newt. "He's safe with us. He'll live with us in the case."

Madam Picquery turned to the Aurors. "Aurors, I'd like you to relieve Mr. Graves of his wand and escort him back to - "

As Graves moved down the platform, a wall of white light suddenly appeared in front of him, blocking his path. He thought for a moment with a sneer. Then, he turned around and fired spells at both groups of Aurors facing him. Spells flew back at him from all angles, but Graves blocked them all. In a split second, Newt pulled the cocoon from his pocket and released it at Graves. The Swooping Evil soared
around him, shielding Newt and the Aurors from Graves's spells, and giving Newt time to raise his wand. He slashed it through the air, a crackling rope of supernatural light wrapping itself around Graves like a whip. It was payback. Graves tried to hold it off, but he struggled and fell to his knees, dropping his wand.

"Accio," Tina whispered, his wand flying into her free hand.

"Revelio," Newt added.

Graves began to transform into the man in wanted posters. He was Gellert Grindelwald. There were murmurs amongst the crowd. Madam Picquery moved toward him.

Grindelwald laughed. "You think you can hold me?"

Madam Picquery smiled. "We'll do our best, Mr. Grindelwald."

He was forced to his feet by two Aurors, who moved him toward the entrance. As Grindelwald reached Newt, he paused, smiling. "Will we die, just a little?"

He was led out of the subway. Newt watched, bemused.

"Take him away," Madam Picquery ordered.

Queenie and Jacob pushed their way through to the front of the Aurors. Jacob held Newt's case, while Queenie hugged Tina. Newt stared at Jacob.

"Hey... I figured somebody oughta keep an eye on this thing," Jacob said, handing the case to Newt.

"Thank you," Newt said.

Madam Picquery addressed the group as she stared
through the broken roof of the subway station. "Is she - "

Newt glanced at Cora. "She's a Phoenix. She'll be fine, but it doesn't make it better."

Madam Picquery nodded, solemn. "We owe you an apology, Mr. Scamander, but the magical community is exposed! We cannot Obliviate an entire city!"

"Actually, I think we can," Newt replied.

Newt placed his case wide-open underneath the
huge hole in the subway roof. Suddenly, Frank the Thunderbird burst in a flurry of feathers. The crowd of Aurors backed away. Frank flapped his powerful wings and hovered above them. Newt moved forward to examine him. He was so proud of him.

"I was intending to wait until we got to Arizona, but it seems like now you are our only hope, Frank."

The two shared an understanding look. Newt reached out his arm, and Frank pressed his beak lovingly into the embrace. They nuzzled each other affectionately.

"I'll miss you too." Newt stepped back, taking the flask of Swooping Evil venom from his pocket. "You know what you've got to do," Newt sadly said.

Newt threw the vial high up into the air. Frank let
out a sharp cry, catching it in his beak and immediately soaring out of the subway. No-Majs and Aurors alike shouted and recoiled as Frank burst from the subway. He flew higher into the air, creating a storm. He crushed the vial in his beak. The powerful venom spread through the thick rain, enchanting it.

The rain washed away all the No-Maj's memories of magic. Frank soared through the streets of New York, churning up more rain as he flew. Then, he was gone, carefree and happy.

"They won't remember anything. That venom has incredibly powerful Obliviative properties," Newt responded.

"We owe you a great deal, Mr. Scamander. Now - get that case out of New York." Madam Picquery sighed.

Newt nodded and bit his lip. "Yes, Madam President."

Madam Picquery began to walk away, her pack of Aurors moving with her. Suddenly, she turned around. Queenie stood protectively in front of Jacob, trying to hide him. Madam Picquery looked at Jacob. "Obliviate him. There can be no exceptions. I'm sorry, but even one witness... Well, you know the law. I'll let you say good-bye."

Newt nodded before turning to Cora and Credence. He was shaking, not unaware of her curse.

"Credence, she's still alive," reassured Newt as he crouched down. "She's a Phoenix. She's meant to die and live. She gave one of her lives to protect you."

"Is she really my mother?"

"The timeline matches up, but we don't know for sure," answered Newt.

Credence noticeably ceased his shaking. The colors of the feathers on Cora's wings began to brighten, curling themselves straighter against her wings. Her wings slowly raised up, no longer sagging against the ground. The lashes on her back began to disappear. She groaned against Credence, blinking as she raised her head and looked around.

"What'd I miss?"
