Chapter Three
We arrived at a large and round object with four thin horizontal strips on top. We entered it, the thin strips spinning loudly and quickly as the Agent pressed buttons and began flying upwards. I gripped the edges of my seat, the strange occurrence leaving me uncertain.
The Agent spoke loudly so I could hear. "Not a fan of helicopters and flying?"
I shook my head. "I've never been in one."
There was a smile before the Agent directed the helicopter from land to a gigantic object in the sea. My eyes widened at the sight of it. We landed on top where bird shaped objects sat on the same platform and entered inside. I gawked at all the strange things I saw, but what left me feeling uneasy was the one colour I saw everywhere: grey. I felt sceptical as the Agent continued to led me further.
"Where are we?" I questioned, blocking out my suspicious tone.
"This is the Helicarrier. SHIELDS headquarters." The Agent answered, looking over his shoulder to do so.
"Fascinating." I stated, frowning in wonder at what was to become of me in the strange place.
We entered a small room with a large mirror on one wall, a table set with two chairs opposite each other.
The Agent gestured for me to sit down. I followed suit as he sat in the opposite place.
He began to speak. "You were in the Museum of the City of New York. You broke free from your containment. Is that correct?"
I lightly frowned, unsure of the meaning of this. "I did indeed."
"And you are aware of a sighting over ten thousand years ago, of you falling from the sky?"
"Ten thousand years ago?" My eyes widened.
The Agent ignored my words. "Earth had a similar sighting a year ago. He was from outer space. Is that where you come from?"
I was transfixed. "Is this Earth?" I pointed down at the desk. "And who is this man you speak of from outer space?"
The Agent's eyebrows raised. "You don't know?"
I shook my head in response, still comprehending each new piece of information that was thrown at me.
The Agent shrugged.
"What is the meaning of this?" I questioned suddenly.
"I need to understand whether you are a threat or not, and I need answers on who you are. Think you can do that for me?"
I cocked my head. "I can assure you, a threat I am not. It is I who shall know whether I am in danger and can trust those who claim to take me in "good hands". Under these very gloomy grey circumstances, I can assure you that trust is not present."
"We will not danger you unless you are seen as a threat. We cannot decide that unless you give us answers. If you fail to do so, we can find them in other ways. Let's start with a name."
"The name I apply comes only from all that I know. Nothing, is the answer I provide you."
"Don't make this difficult. I don't want to take the hard way. I need to know your name."
"Provide a name, I cannot, for I have no recollection of it."
"No recollection? Then do you know where you come from?"
"I do not. I must inform you, before you provide further questioning, that upon waking up in my enclosure, there is no memory provided to me of occurrences beforehand. How must I provide you of my origins and name if I have no memory of it? Now, must you continue to question a memoryless being?"
The Agents brows raised once again. He stood from his place, informing me to follow his lead. He took me to a room of a small size, obtaining a cot and a strange seat, bowl, and cubical behind a cut-out patterned wall. The Agent demanded that I remain where I was till someone collected me. Upon his departure, he pulled a device from his clothing and brought it to his ear, the only words I could decipher as he departed was, 'put the woman on' before they became lost in the distance. I frowned, wondering his objective.
I went into, from memory and comparison to Shelly's home, the bathroom. I observed what I could of myself in the mirror, smoothing my golden hair and disagreeing with the clothing I wore. Feeling foreign and uncomfortable, I changed into my cloth, wrapping my gold sash around my waist, cinching the fabric to display my form. The golden necklace, hung at my collarbone, revealed its glory between the V in my dress. I gripped the pure gold bracers on each wrist, adjusting the comfort of their position.
Bending my elbows and keeping my hands at my mid-torso, I gazed at my reflection, admiring my beauty, and preening where necessary.
A knock caused me to turn on my heel. The rectangle I entered in slid aside, revealing a woman clad in a red shirt, long black pants, and a leather jacket, the only normality I had seen in that place, indicating she may be of no threat to me.
"Greetings!" I announced.
I stepped closer standing in the centre of the room as I examined the woman. "Oh my! The beauty I witness before me is grand." My gaze swept the top of her head. "Your hair is exquisite!"
She cocked her head and smirked. "Thank you. I'm flattered."
I gestured to the bed where we situated ourselves upon my invite.
"I'm Natasha Romanoff." The woman declared.
I smiled at the immediate introduction. "It's a pleasure to meet you. I must apologise, for I do not remember my name."
She paused before speaking, her tone turned sympathetic. "It must be hard."
I frowned. "Whatever do you mean?"
"You awoke 11,976 years later. This has been seen before."
"How fascinating! Did their memory return to them?"
"They never lost it. Only his past and missed seventy years of life." She stated matter-of-factly.
"Then there is nothing to compare." I stood and approached the exit. "I hope you have obtained what you came here to receive. I have informed you of all that I can, and now must ask you to leave."
"I never came to receive anything." Her tone remained skilfully calm.
"Did you not, Natasha-Romanoff? Are you not the woman Agent Phil-Coulson summoned?"
"He wanted me here. Just like you."
"Then what of your tale?"
"I will provide necessary assistance."
"You cannot mean for me, for assistance I need not, but knowledge I require."
"You cannot have the knowledge without assistance."
"Provided with knowledge, I must be, of the land I stand upon, for I cannot go forth without it."
The conversation halted, silence filling the room. Natasha-Romanoff moved to stand in front of me, crossing her arms as she searched my eyes. "There's someone I want you to meet. You can choose not to trust him but I will leave you here. It's up to you."
"Have I got all but nothing to lose?"
As I was lead through the grey walls once again, I was aware that everyone was working together and especially knew of my status. It was no coincidence that Agent Phil-Coulson had called in Natasha-Romanoff directly after he had unsuccessfully quizzed me, her clear skill providing a more efficient and enhanced tactic at sourcing information. It was clear she put off a friendly and relative aura to make an acquaintance and draw out answers to their questions. There was nothing further for them to gain. I was unrestrictive in supplying all that I knew. Though, it seemed they didn't trust that. I had nothing to hide, nor did I have to be cautious. I could choose to trust, which I had not, but what I gave was nothing of import. I merely had to keep the danger at arm's length and protect my life if threatened.
We entered a room, busy with objects of the strangest. It was a relatively white area, viewed from every side through varied large glass windows.
A man was switching between places, plucking out objects and assembling them on a table.
"Banner." Natasha-Romanoff approached the man.
She kept her face out of view where I remained at the entrance. Occasionally I received glances from the man, him nodding as she whispered close in his ear. There was an 'okay' on behalf of the man before the woman turned on her heels and left the room.
The man remained silent for a moment, looking down at the table in front of him. I observed the odd glass circles that sat upon his face, wondering it that was his source of sight.
"What is it that sits upon your nose?" I spoke through the silence, the man's gaze turning to me.
He frowned for a moment before looking at the glass circles.
He pushed them closer to his face. "Oh, these are just glasses."
My gaze upon Banner was soft and gentle, illuminating my beauty and using a subtle smile to entrance him. "There must be a very handsome man behind those glasses."
Banner remained silent as he stared me in the eyes. I slowly stepped towards him.
I placed my hands upon the table, keeping my luring gaze upon him. "Tell me, what is your place in this helicarrier?"
There was no hesitation to Banner's response. "I'm, I'm just the guy who was told to locate where the Tesseract is, using a rough tracking algorithm that is based on cluster recognition to rule out a few places."
I lightly raise my brow. Banner breaks his gaze from me and turns back to the table.
"What is this Tesseract you speak of?" My tone is strongly quizzical.
Banner halts, turning his gaze to me with raised brows. "The Tesseract is a cube with the potential to admit energy that could wipe out the entire planet. If I don't find it in time, the world could face this global catastrophe."
"Oh my, that's quite a powerful source." I say with a worried frown. "Why must you be the one to locate the Tesseract. Do you possess special abilities?"
"Well, I'm just a scientist, physicist, and a medical doctor. But the Tesseract is admitting weak amounts of gamma radiation by which S.H.E.I.L.D wants me to trace since I know gamma radiation well and no one else can trace it." Banner stated matter-of-factly.
"Fascinating. Why is it that you remain with the ability to trace this gamma radiation as a single?"
Banner hesitated, his expression turning to one of contemplation. "You might see one day."
A frown formed as I became perplexed by Banner's words. Silence filled the room as my mind pondered over my trust upon Banner. He was but a pawn in SHIELD's ability to find this Tesseract and was performing as the only being able to locate it. I contemplated the ability of the being.
"Beings are so fascinating. One can find themselves greeted warmly and treated kindly, and the next you find you cannot trust them. Though, I have learnt, that there are some who seem to be of good intentions."
Banner looked up from moving things around on the table. "Trust is the most difficult factor on earth. One day you find yourself in peace, and the next your back to where you began. No trust for anybody." A frown formed upon Banner's brows. "And we prefer to call ourselves people in case you needed to know of our correct terminology."
I smiled. "I see, thank you."
I gazed out through the windows as I approached them, observing the water below us. I frowned. "My, are we in flight? How does this large object remain afloat in air? The density of it would surely cause it to fall."
From behind, Banner answered my questions. "There are four massive turbine engines, capable of sustained, independent powered flight, which provide the lift to elevate the vessel into the air."
"Fascinating. Is that what powers all forms of transport upon Earth?"
A chuckle sounded behind me. "No. There are various ways that transport is powered."
I turned to face Banner. "Pray, tell me what powers transport if not these turbine engines."
Banner, occupied by his work as well as explaining Earths complications to me, spent a considerable sum of time. Once I had quizzed him and in return received answers of detail, he had constructed a large object that was his device to detect the gamma radiation form the Tesseract.
A yawn dispensed from me disturbed our conversation. I twisted my body to gaze out at the dark sky visible from the window. I had not expected it to be so late within time, though it was expected for we had conversed for quite some time.
"I must retire for the evening; it must be considerably late." I declared as Banner nodded in agreement. "Thank you for providing me with the necessary information. I had not entrusted that I'd find what I'd desired." I approached Banner. "I do not know how to return the favour." I thought for a moment before standing next to Banner and leaning in, gently kissing his cheek.
I turned, approached the exit, spinning on my heel and delivering a beaming smile to Banner, thanking him once more and bidding him good night before I left to my room.
