CHAPTER 14
I pushed myself from the ground, ignoring the agonising pain throughout my body. As I stood, my legs wabbled beneath me, but I balanced by holding my arms out. I looked to my bike, seeing its battered state. I wasn't sure whether I could ride it, but I grabbed the bent handlebars and lifted it from the ground. I attempted to wheel it along the ground, but the rims where too bent to obey with a straight line.
I gave up and dropped the bike in its place, the bell chiming as it hit the ground. I lifted the skirts of my dress and ran. It was painful and weak, but running seemed like my only escape.
I reached the edge of the highway, holding my hand out for a cab. Once I was able to wave a cab down, they pulled over and I quickly hopped in. I aggressively shut the door.
The driver looked in his rearview mirror. 'Where would you like to go?'
I sniffled. 'Just drive.'
The driver obeyed and began driving. I had no idea where we were and I didn't quite care, as long as I was out of sight. I took a moment to observe the driver. He had an Italian accent, so I assumed he was Italian. His skin was lightly tanned with a short, neatened beard. He seemed a trustworthy gentleman. His eyes giving off a sense of kindness. However, those qualities weren't of any interest to me anymore. I had out my trust in those I thought worthy of it, but now, I didn't know who I could trust.
I whipped my damp cheeks. 'I'll get you to take me to my home.'
I gave him the directions, not the location. I didn't want to reveal it, especially after the attack that just happened.
After about 20 minutes, I got him to drop me off at the outskirts of New York. It was a small town and I knew where I was, so I could just walk the remaining distance. It would take me a while but it was better than revealing my home location.
As I stepped out of the car, the driver called out to me. 'Hey! Are you going to pay?'
I ignored him. I didn't have any money, nor did I care to pay. I shut the door and turned to walk away.
The driver got out of his car and stood looking at me. 'What are you doing? You have to pay.'
My feet started to pick up the pace. I had gained enough energy and strength in the car to now run. I started to push harder into the ground, taking me further away from the cab. He got in his car and seemed to shrug it off.
I guess he had seen my condition and urgency to get away that he had enough decency to let me go. I was both thankful and guilty of that, but I didn't care. I needed to get away. I had stopped running and turned off the street and onto a log dirt road that seemed to go nowhere. Tall dry grass and dotted trees was the scenery on both sides. It was drab and almost lifeless. No cars were in sight as it was a deserted area.
It took me around 30 minutes before I reached my next turn. I turned to the left and continued down another dirt road. After a further 20 minutes, trees appeared in the distance. I knew it would take me a while to get to them.
The walk was long, as I knew, but it was worth the hideout of a property that we had. After a long half hour, the scenery was changing into woods. More trees that gave more greenery and life to the area were at my sides now.
It took me around 10 minutes before I was deep in the woods and the road curved to the left. The dirt road curved again to the right, which meant the straight driveway was just ahead. I walked the turn and began the minute long journey to the house.
I finally ended the walk and now stood in the front lawn, looking at the house. I knew Shelly and James would be up by now with it being past midday. They would have read my note and thought I was an idiot. I could agree with them, but what would they think if they saw the state I was in? They probably didn't need to know what happened, providing I was recorded and they probably saw a snippet of it on the news.
I looked to the ground, wondering what I was to do. I wanted to get to my room and be closed off from the world. I wanted to sit and ponder on my current life.
I walked round to the back of the house and attempted to quietly enter the back door. The screen door was the only one open, so I had the advantage of ensuring no one was right there when I entered. There was a small creak in the hinges, but not loud enough for anyone to hear. There were sounds coming from the lounge room and I assumed it was the TV. I creeper down the sark halfway, walking to the end where my bedroom was. The opposite end was where Shelly was, along with a media, office, and pool room. James, the laundry room, and I were down the end I was at.
I successfully reached my bedroom and entered without a sound. I turned and turned the lock on my handle. I let out sigh knowing I was isolated, and even if James or Shelly heard me, they couldn't barge into my room and interrupt me.
I laid on my bed. I was completely exhausted from the walk and I still felt pain with every move I made. I shut my eyes for a while, resting my body and regaining energy.
After an hour or so, I awoke from my small sleep. My "Asgardian" dress that sat in the corner in its display was the first thing I laid eyes upon. It reminded me of Thor and what he had said.
"Call Heimdall and he will send you."
I wondered who this Heimdall person was. Was he even a person? What did they do? How would they bring me to Asgard? Would I teleport or something?
Whatever it was, maybe I could give it a chance. I wanted to go there anyway, and maybe it was best to go there at this pint in time of my life. Seeming no one wanted me around or wanted to see me, I was probably better off somewhere else. Somewhere where I didn't get beat up wherever I went.
I rose from my soft bed. I walked over to the white and gold dress. I opened the door and unhooked it from the acres that allows it to lay flat against the backboard. I placed the dress over my bed and took it from the coat hanger.
I stripped the dirty and torn butterfly dress from my body, replacing it with the Asgardian one. I needed to fit in if I wanted to go to the realm that seemed to have that type of clothing.
I flattened the skirt layers. Any tears that were from the battle had been eradicated. Evidence was not visible, and the dress was clean. It had returned to its original state. I walked into my ensuite and looked at my reflection.
I looked like a mess. My hair scruffy and my skin covered in bruises. There was a split on my lip and above my eyebrow. A small dried blood trail came from them. A bruise was forming on my cheek and my face was covered in redness and dirt. Tears had cleared a path down my cheeks, leaving clean tear trails on my skin.
I looked over my arms and legs. My shins had a few cuts on them and obvious bruises had formed. My arms only had a few bruises, and my torso was sure to be covered in them. My skin was inflamed in places where I had been punched but no bruise showed yet.
I heard a rattle come from my door, followed by a knock. 'Rosalie? Are you in there?'
It was Shelly. I knew I couldn't be seen. I was too ashamed to show my face. I rushed out of the bathroom and headed for the window that was beside my display cabinet that had my dress in it.
I slid it open and kicked out the fly screen. Shelly tried opening the locked door again. The handle rattled under her failed attempt. I lifted myself onto the ledge of the window and swung my legs to hang out. The ground wasn't too far down, so I wiggled to the very edge and jumped.
I landed heavy on my feet, falling on my hands as I steadied my fall. I stood up and dusted my hands off. I looked to the sky then back at my window.
Shelly was calling out in worry. 'Rosalie! Open this door now!'
I inhaled and looked to the sky again, calling out. 'Heimdall!'
I anxiously looked to my left as I the back screen door flung open. Shelly ran out and looked at me with shock.
She frowned with worry. 'Rosalie! What the hell are you doing?'
I screamed out. 'Heimdall!'
At that moment, a rainbow stream came from the sky and surrounded me. I could only just see Shelly run a little closer and look up as I ascended into the sky at lightning speed.
I looked below me to the ground that wasn't there anymore.
I brought a hand to my side and waved downwards. 'Bye Shelly. Bye James.'
I could barely hear myself, and no one else would have heard me in the slightest. There was no one to hear me. I didn't know how long of be gone for. I could be gone for the rest of my life. However long it may be, I wouldn't see Shelly or James till them, and vise versa.
I looked above me, still shooting upwards. Suddenly, I was shot into a room and the rainbow beam disappeared. I landed on a hard floor with a loud thud. I quickly lifted my head and whipped it towards where I had just came from.
The portal closed and I seemed to be in an unfamiliar world. I sighed at that, feeling relieved that I had escaped from earth.
'I was waiting for you to say farewell to your friends before I brought you here.' A deep, calm voice came from behind me.
I whipped my head around and stood to my feet. There, in front of me on a higher level stood a man. He was dressed in bulky gold armour that covered most if his body. His face was the only vulnerable part, even then, it was partially covered. His helmet had horns that reminded me of a rhino beetle.
He had his hands wrapped around the handle of a large sword that seemed to be slot into a strange device that held the sword. His skin was dark, the inky evidence being his hands and his face.
I must have had a confused look upon my face as the man spoke up. 'I am Heimdall.'
I relaxed and raised my eyebrows. 'Oh, so that's who you are? And what do you do?'
Heimdall gave a small smile. 'I am the gatekeeper of the Bifrost. I see all, and hear all.'
I frowned. 'What's the Bifrost?'
Heimdall turned and gestured to our surroundings. 'This. It is the bridge that allows transport between realms through space in a short period of time.'
I nodded, observing the area. It was a semicircle looking room that had cogs and circular objects all around it. There was a series of circles on the floor and rose as it was closer to the center, forming a peak in the floor where Heimdall stood.
I pursed my lips and looked back at Heimdall. 'So let me get this straight. You can see and hear everything? Meaning what you first said to me, was because of what you saw?'
Heimdall nodded once in response. Seeing his answer, I looked to the ground, shameful for not facing Shelly and James so I could bid them farewell.
I shook my shamefulness away and stood strong. 'So, this is Asgard I presume?'
I pointed to the area around us, trying to direct Heimdall's attention.
He chuckled. 'This is not Asgard. Asgard is over there.'
He stood to the side and revealed a distant city. There seemed to be a large palace of gold, made of cylinders at different heights, creating a triangular shape. It refracted light and shine in the suns rays. What connected Asgard to the Bifrost was a long rainbow bridge.
It looked beautiful from the distance. I had my mouth slightly agape in awe.
I turned back to Heimdall and pointed in the direction of the city. 'That's Asgard?'
Heimdall nodded. I was speechless by it's sight, now understanding what Thor meant by it being beautiful. And to think I was only looking at it from the distance.
'I believe you have somewhere you'd like to be?' I turned to Heimdall who had a smile upon his face.
I could only give a single nod in response. I was completely awestruck. I slowly started my journey down the bridge, stepping onto its strange material. Wherever I stepped, the bridge became brighter under my contact. It was beautiful, and I had only taken two steps before I had stopped to observe its wonderment.
I looked to both my sides to observe what lay behind the Bifrost. It seemed to be a cliff edge. The water that surrounded Asgard seemed to effortlessly run off and surrender to the space that traveled to no where.
It was a floating island, in space.
I shook my head, regaining my attention away from the destruction. I continued the long journey down the rainbow bridge. It was time to meet new people. Time to see what this place was. Maybe I could even find clues to my past. I could start a new life. Live here if I wanted. Whatever was to happen, I hoped it was far better than what earth had been providing me.
