Chapter 14: Mask
"An anonymous tip to our news agency has revealed a unit operating under V.I.R.T.U.R.E purposely hidden from the public." Switching on the large projector at the front of the conference room, everyone adverts their attention from the door the director just walked out of. Under strict order, no one was allowed to follow in his footsteps. His exact words being for 'the assigned team to head to a training deck' and for everyone else to 'stay put.' But no one dared to stand up. The room was silent as everyone was trying to recover from the site of the director hastily making his way out of the room.
Curiosity got the best of the operatives trapped inside the conference room. Majority of the operatives soon ran to the glass window, in hopes of getting answers...only to be met with a massive crowd of citizens now stationed outside the front of V.I.R.T.U.R.E.
Someone was quick to switch the news channel on.
"A unit is rumoured to be harbouring weapons from our enemies dimension. Why would V.I.R.T.U.E hide this from us? How can we~" The stream was hastily turned off by someone who you could not recognise. He was tall but skinny. His eyes were a generic hazel brown colour but held a sense of authority and intellect. His face reflected disappointment as he panned his gaze over the operatives desperately searching for answers.
"Let's obey the wishes of the director." His voice was as smooth and strong.
"And who are you to tell us what to do?" An operative spoke up, earning a lot of head turns and a few hums of agreement.
"Who I am does not matter, what matters is following orders." Tilting his head challenging at the operative that had spoken up, the male raised a brow. "But if you must know my name is Kim Namjoon wielder of Charity."
And with one sentence, Namjoon had shut the operative up. The male gulped before jumping up from his seat and leaving with many others following after him.
Namjoon, that was the Virtue Taeyong mentioned. Turning around to meet with Taeyong's motionless figure, you lightly gestured for him to move. It took a few seconds before he fully processed what you had tried to say but none the less, the two of you headed your way down to the locker rooms.
"So that's him?" You say after checking the two of you were a good distance away from the conference room.
"Yeah, though, he isn't usually that scary." Taeyong chuckled, his hand scratching the nape of his neck nervously.
"Figures." Arriving at the front of the champion locker area, you open your's and grabbed the pair of worn out gloves sitting on the top shelf.
'Look at her hands, they are littered with blisters'
Pulling the fingerless glove over your left hand, you drew your hands into a fist and rotated your wrist to test out the tightness of the glove. They were old and littered with small tears created by the countless time you used them. The leather which used to act as a grip was no more, the smooth texture of the fabric had now worn out completely.
'Here, mummy will give these to you so it doesn't hurt as much, hm?'
Picking up the second glove from the bench beside you, you opened up your hand to examine the state of your palm. They were constantly littered with red splotches and dead skin, it was the result of all the time you spent shooting and holding onto the handle of the rifle.
You then proceeded to put on the second glove before velcroing it tightly around your wrist. You always tried to remember what the palm of your hand looked like without the splotches and dead skin. But it seemed you couldn't, it never failed to lead you back to thinking about her. She loved this place and it seems without her, everything was falling apart. With the rising rebellions against V.I.R.T.U.E, the continuation of the agency relied heavily on you and your team succeeding the mission tomorrow. Although it was only for safety precautions, you couldn't help but feel a sense of dread. Something was telling you that it wasn't just a safety precaution.
She loved this place and refuse to let the one thing she died for die along with her. Without V.I.R.T.U.E you wouldn't be able to honour her by wielding her weapon into battle. Without her, you wouldn't be at V.I.R.T.U.E but instead in university and study or perhaps working already.
"What do you think I would be doing if I didn't win the champions?" Subconsciously voicing your thoughts aloud, you feel someone sit next to you on the bench. A soft sigh leaving their lips in the process.
Once you noticed the person you let a half-hearted laugh. "Would I be studying for exams and worry about getting a job after I graduate?"
"You would prefer sitting an exam over killing torturous spirits of the Underworld?" Finding your inquiry quite amusing, Taeyong replied with a chuckle.
"Hm no, I love what I do." You quickly replied, no hesitation evident in your voice what so ever. "Wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. That's why we can't afford to mess up tomorrow." What started off in a light-hearted tone trailed off into silence. The last word of your sentence was barely audible to the male sitting next to you. Silence fell in the room so you allowed your gaze to remain fixed to the floor, zoning out on the world around you.
"No pressure, yeah?" Breaking the silence between the two of you, Taeyong chuckled lightly, in an attempt to lighten up the atmosphere.
"Yeah." You let out a deep sigh before grabbing ahold of the throwing knife sitting in your bag and tightly strapped it to your leg. You then proceeded to pick yourself up from the bench.
"(Y/n) don't worry too much~"
"Let's go Taeyong. They are probably waiting for us." Grabbing ahold of the rifle laying on the floor, you swiftly slung the weapon onto your back.
After basically seeing the Seven Virtues for the first time, the director thought it would be a good idea for the team assigned for the next mission to hold a training session together. You weren't against the idea but considering how many hours of sleep you were running on, you weren't really for it either. You knew it was only for the best as you had never truely worked with anyone on the team before so a training session would be great for you to see everyone's strengths and weaknesses. The team needed to work flawlessly if you wanted a chance of teamwork tomorrow. But yet again, how many bad could it be? You had the Seven Virtues after all.
Oh, how wrong you were to assume.
.
Simultaneously, an operative which was supposed to have been at the headquarters was sitting somewhere in Korea watching the sunset. His head rested nonchalantly on the palm of his hands as he watched the citizens below mindlessly.
The buzzing atmosphere emitting of the workers and school students below contrasting with his dark demeanour. A sad smiling dawning his lips in the process. Everything seemed to be working in his favour, watching the agency's reaction to the sudden influx in demonic activity was quite amusing in his eyes. Watching them flock together like headless chooks whilst trying to figure out a plan of action. But honestly, who was he kidding? That was what he would have to felt if it was ten years ago. His past self would have felt so proud of himself, making his father proud with all he had achieved.
But now, he felt anything but pride.
Scoffing at his own ignorance, he ran his hand through his silver locks and allowed himself to swing his legs back and forth. He should have known he would become attached, he was always like this.
The dark demeanour he was watching the people down below with was envy. He envied that they could live a normal life and enjoy the little things one would take advantage of. Those small little moments of laughter you share with your loved ones.
The movement of his legs, however, came to an abrupt stop when he hears the clicking of the heel of a shoe hitting the concrete rooftop.
"What are you doing here?" He seethed through his teeth.
"Not happy to see me I see?" The female chuckled. "What was I expecting." She spoke to no one in particular.
The male didn't bother to reply and resumed his previous position.
"What's wrong with wanting to check up on an old friend?" The male couldn't help but roll his eyes at the female's reply before watching as she took a seat next to him on the rooftop. She has changed drastically since the last time he had seen her. Although an Earth year was much faster than the ones in the 5th dimension, he still couldn't recognise her. The weak girl he knew was no more. There was something more menacing about her now.
"Ah, so you do remember who I am." He sarcastically replied back to the magical.
The female was quite taken back by the demons reply that she allowed a minute of silence to envelope the atmosphere between the two of them. She eyed the male in front of her and tried to read his body language but it was as blank as ever. He was simply looking down at the street below with his head resting on his palm.
"What are they so happy about?" The male suddenly spoke. The female followed the gaze, only for it to land on a couple pushing their way through the crowd. The enchantress witnessed out of the corner of her eye the demon twinkling his fingers in the air as he said this. The orange light being emitted from the sun was soon replaced with a low purple glow as the demon played with the red ball he had summoned.
"If I remember correctly you are the reason for that." Gesturing to the crowd of people huddling around the base of the headquarters, she tilted her head curiously at the demon.
"Do you think I have a choice?" The atmosphere fell silent once again as the demon looked upon the couple in longing and hatred. "If only they knew what was coming for them." A red sphere of magic hovered over his palm for only a few seconds. The demon then crushed the orb by roughly curling his fingers into a tight fist. Causing it to disappear into nothing but small speckles of dust. The enchantress didn't find the demon's wrath intimidating but instead found it quite amusing.
"Careful Envy, your sin is showing."
