01 || What's a Greaser, Randy?

"Avery!" My mom calls up stairs.

"One minute Liz, I'm gonna have to call you back," I mumble into the phone before hanging up. I rush downstairs to see my mom and dad sitting at the table. "What's wrong?"

My dad motions to a chair, "please sit hunny."

I do as he says, "what's going on?"

My mom sighs, "we have to move."

"Okay," I chuckle. "I know this house is a little pricey and with Annie being in college we can move into a smaller house. We were looking at one ten minutes away from the school if you walk. Right by Diamond and Liz."

My mom shakes her head, "your dad got a job."

"That's great!" I squeal. "Where is it?"

"In Tulsa," he speaks softly.

My mouth drops, "that's not even in England! Where is that?"

Nothing.

"I demand an answer right now!" I yell.

"Hey!" My mom shouts. "Slow down little girl and treat us with respect."

I sigh as I look down ashamed, "I'm sorry.....I'm sorry. Mom, I'm gonna be a freshman, I have my best friends, I have my friends, I have everything. Do I have to leave?"

She nods, "I'm sorry."

"Where's Tulsa?" I ask.

"In the United States," my dad informs.

'What?" I ask angrily.

My dad goes to grab my hands, but I pull them back, "I'm sorry."

"Don't!" I yell as I run upstairs. "Why? It's not like we need the money!"

"You have to be ready to leave by tomorrow. I'm sorry," my mom yells up to me.

"Whatever!" I yell. "School is starting in a week and I'm leaving. Great! Just great."

My life was about to change and I couldn't do anything about it. I just had to sit down and pack hoping for the best not knowing if I was gonna be okay in Tulsa or if I wasn't. All I knew was that I was about to leave, everything, I've ever known and I was terrified.

**********

"Avery Madisons," the teacher calls.

I look up from my notebook and everybody is looking at me. I quietly whisper, "here."

A boy leans over to me, "are you new?"

I nod my head slowly.

"That's why everybody is looking at you," he chuckles. "In a small town like Tulsa, everybody knows everybody and a new girl is big news."

"I'm Avery," I smile my English accent coming out.

He smiles, "my name is Ponyboy."

"Ponyboy?" I ask taken back.

"My dad was original," he chuckles.

I giggle, "I can see. It's nice to meet you, I'm Avery."

"Ponyboy Curtis," the teacher calls.

"Here!" Pony calls.

I hear a ton of comments about Ponyboy starting with the term, "greaser"

What does that even mean? What did he do to them? Why don't they like him?

Ponyboy Curtis. What is there to say about Ponyboy Curtis? He was the one person that I felt connected to, in all of Tulsa. He was the guy, who taught me everything. He's the reason, I am who I am today.

"Hey, it's Avery," some guy walks up to me. "Right?"

I nod, "yeah. What's your name?"

He smiles, "Randy."

"Nice to meet you," I smile.

"What do you have next?" He asks.

I look down at my schedule, "gym, kill my now."

"Me too," he grabs my hand. "Wanna ditch."

I shrug, "I don't know."

"Lets go," he smiles as he guides me to a red door. "Wanna go to the DX?"

"Where's that?" I ask my accent pulling through.

"Some Greasy gas station," he shrugs.

I nod, "works for me."

As we pull in Randy gets out and turns to me, "stay here."

As he gets out some guy runs over to him, "whacha doing 'round here?"

Randy shrugs and says something inaudible. I slide myself over to his seat and roll down the window a crack lowering the music. Another guy runs out, but this one has like movie star good looks. "Get off our turf, you no good socs."

"Hey!" Randy yells. "At least I'm not a dirty greaser!"

There's that term again...Greaser

"This is our territory, so I suggest you leave," the first guy suggest.

Randy turns as if he's gonna leave, but turns around and punches the guy right in the face. I gasp as I watch. The really hot guy pulls out a blade, "get lost!"

Randy kicks his wrist and punches him down to the ground. He runs over and grabs the blade.

Is he gonna kill them?

The one guy jumps up, grabs Randy's shirt and slaps him across the face as the hot guy kicks him down to the ground. They both climb on top of Randy, but Randy fights back punching the one guy off him. The hot one goes in and punches his gut. Randy groans in pain, but punches him off him. Randy stands up and looks down at them, "better watch out Greasers, because next time, it won't be so pretty." He turns around to walk away. I quickly roll up the window, slide back over and turn up the music.

As he climbs in the car, he wipes the blood off his lower lip, "stupid Greasers." He turns to look at me, "never go by anybody refereed to as a greaser. Ya hear me, they're dangerous."

"What happened?" I gasp.

"A few days ago, a grease slashed up one of my buddy's car. His name is Dallas Winston and he's the worst. Stay away," Randy warns me.

I turn to him, "what's a Greaser Randy?"

He shutters, "the lowest of low in Tulsa."

"Is Ponyboy a greaser?" I ask.

His head whips around and he looks at me, "did you talk to him?"

I nod, "he's nice."

"I'm gonna kill him!"

"Don't!" I shriek.

He grabs my wrist, "listen, he's bad news. Never go near him again."

I nod, "why?"

"He's a no good, dirty Greaser!" He yells as he looks at the time. "Damn we gotta go back."

I nod, "yeah."

Randy, looking at him, he seemed like an angel. He looked like such a kind, gentle, innocent soul. He looked like the person, Ponyboy acted like. Although, once you got to know Randy, you learned he's the complete opposite. He's a devil dressed like an angel. He was mean, rude, and a mess up on so many different levels. He turned out to be everything I was afraid of in life.

***

I walk out of high school and hear screaming, "Johnny! Two-bit! Dallas!"I look around where the screaming is coming and I see this tough looking guy running. I chase after him, wondering if he's Johnny, Two-bit, or Dallas.

I turn to see Ponyboy pinned against the side of the school getting beat by Randy and a ton of other guys. I watch as blood drips down his face. His eyes are closed and they don't care. Randy is the one who's holding him there, that is until he lets go; letting Pony's body go limp to the floor. "Ponyboy!" I cry out.

The guy I followed grabs Randy by the shirt, "what did you do?"

Randy chuckles, "got rid of some trash. Tell him to stop talking to my girl."

"He wouldn't be talking to a Soc like you," the guy spits in his face. "Get out of my sight." The guy drops Randy.

I run over to Randy, "how could you?"

"Avery," he gasps.

"Don't!" I yell through gritted teeth. "Just don't Randy. The greasers may be dirty, but your a bully."

He shakes his head handing me a piece of paper, "I'll explain later. I gotta go."

As he walks away I run next to Ponyboy. I shake his body as the guy next to him keeps muttering something. I push his hair out of his eyes, "Ponyboy, please wake up."

The guy looks up at me, "who are you?"

"I'm new, my name is Avery," I smile as I put my hand out.

"Dallas Winston," he smiles.

"Is Pony gonna be okay?" I ask him.

He nods, "just a little banged up."

"I should go then," I sigh. "I'll see ya later."

I go to run off, but Dally stops me, "Avery!"

I spin around my hair whipping around me, "yea Dallas."

"Where are you from?" He asks.

"England," I smile as I run home.

Dallas Winston, he's one of kind. He's tough, mean, rude, and he doesn't care about anybody. Although he's also just a lost little boy. When he get past the tough exterior and reach his heart, he's sweet, kind, and gentle. He's the opposite of what I thought he would be. He's an angel, disguised as a devil.
