Ch 9

A/N: Hey everyone! Hope you guys liked the last chapter. So I ended it with a cliffhanger, and I assure you, it would play a huge consequence in the later part of the story, as it was already hinted. Read the A/N at the end to find out when the next chapter will be out. On with the chapter!

A few days later.....

Hermione sighed as she once again apparated in front of the gates of the Malfoy Manor, but this time, she was all alone.

And even if she didn't want to admit it, the fact that Draco had been next to her every single time she had visited his house in the past few days had helped her calm down and not give in to her anxiousness.

Because even if she thought that the Malfoy Heir was a huge git, the truth was that he was an Order member now, and she knew that as long as she was by his side, the Death Eaters won't harm her.

The day when she had roamed the halls of the Malfoy Manor and Draco had pulled her in his room, and the way he had controlled the confrontation with Rabastan, proved that they had one main goal.

Defeat Voldemort and bring peace back in their world.

And they would go to any lengths to accomplish that.

But this time, Draco had not been allowed to leave the Manor to come and escort her, as he had informed her through the galleon, so Hermione had to cross the long path which lead to his house alone.

The path which though had gardens, which showed little signs of calmness, on both sides, but it led to a place she had sworn to never step a foot in again.

And now, if their plan worked, soon enough, that very place would be her home, for as long as the War would last for.

Taking a deep breath, the Brightest Witch of Her Age took a step forwards, after making sure that she had the disguise on, as the gates automatically opened.

Draco had told her that he would adjust the wards to allow her in, and warned her to not touch the gates in any case.

As the gates were charmed with spells to send shocks to anyone who was not a pure blood, or a half blood, and immediately alert the Head of the Manor.

Also known as, Lucius Abraxas Malfoy.'

Hermione continued on the path, taking small steps and deep breaths, trying her best to either look only forwards, or at the albino peacocks.

And not at the Death Eaters which stood in various spots in the garden. Some were even being poked by a few peacocks.

Finally, after what seemed like forever, Hermione climbed the small steps and waited for the doors to open.

And they did, as expected.

But what she had not expected, was to see Lord Voldemort standing in the centre of the room, his hands behind his back. His face displaying a creepy smile which only made Hermione want to run away from there.

Though the sight of Draco Malfoy slowly entering the room, and standing a little behind the Dark Lord, made her determined to do as she was asked.

"Amelia Romano." The Dark Lord said in his snake like voice.

"My Lord." Hermione bowed in front of him and plastered a fake smile on her face. "I did not know that you would be here today."

This was not the first time Hermione was meeting Voldemort in her disguise. He had been present all the time she had come to the Manor before in the past few days.

But this time, Draco had not told her that he would be here. And judging from his expression, it seemed as if he had not known either that the Dark Lord will be arriving.

"You will find, Miss Romano, that I can come and go in my Headquarters as I prefer." The Dark Lord said.

"Of course, I didn't want to offend you, My Lord. I would never think of questioning you-"

"If you are done blabbering, then you can follow me, Romano." Draco snarled at her. He was taking a risk here, speaking like that in front of the darkest wizard of his age.

But he had to do this.

He had to make sure that his parents and his ex master, at least according to him, believed that he hated Amelia with every fibre of his being.

"And if you can't understand the value of time," The Malfoy Heir continued, "Then feel free to go. Commoners are not allowed here anyways-"

"Watch who you are calling a commoner, Malfoy." Hermione argued back, feeling a little offended when she remembered the way he used to call her a disgusting word during all those years at Hogwarts. "I will let you know the contacts I have in Italy. Bet you don't know how much approach I have."

She made sure to put proper emphasis on the word contacts, so as to make her point clear.

And to remind Voldemort of that fact, which was false in reality, but true in their act.

"I will call you whatever I prefer, Romano." Draco narrowed his eyes on her. "And approach, huh? Bet you don't know that I can buy all of them in a second. After all, who would not love to be in close contact with a Death Eater? Specially the one who's house is the Headquarters of the Dark Lord."

Anyone with a brain would have recognised that the Malfoy Heir had no interest in being a Death Eater, his actions at the Battle of Hogwarts were enough to prove that.

But thankfully, Voldemort was paying attention to what Hermione had said instead of their argument, and Lucius and Narcissa had been whispering among themselves.

"Shut the hell up, Malfoy-"

"Quiet." Voldemort hissed at them. "I don't want any arguments here. Young Malfoy," He turned to the said wizard, "Take Miss Romano to your wing, and help her with whatever problem she has."

"And," He continued as they turned to move, "Be sure to treat her with respect, Draco."

The blond wizard pretended to glare daggers at the Brightest Witch of Her Age, but motioned for her to follow him.

Hermione cracked her fist and pointed her wand at him to hex him, but Draco accioed her wand to him.

And send her a nod signalling it was all according to the plan.

The Gryffindor Princess deliberately walked slowly, so as to irritate Draco, and as per the plan, the Slytherin Prince let out a frustrated sigh, gripped her wrist steady enough, but not much hard to hurt her and dragged her towards the staircase.

And Hermione let out a, 'Hey!, but stil she couldn't pull her hand away from his grip.

Once they had left the room, Voldemort turned to Draco's parents. "They really seem to hate each other, don't they?"

"They do, My Lord." Lucius nodded. "The only thing they have done ever since Miss Romano arrived a few days back is nothing but fighting with each other. Her step brother, Blaise Zabini, told us that she and Draco would fight every time they met in Italy during the holidays."

"They simply hate each other's guts." Narcissa agreed with her husband. "They would keep arguing all day, and Theodore Nott Junior told us that they have a very bad rivalry. Hate at first sight, is what it is."

"Very well." The noseless wizard nodded and then turned towards the staircase which led to the second floor, where Draco and his companion had gone, on the former's wing of the house. "I have made a decision."

And when they heard the dark wizard's decision, Lucius' jaw almost dropped to the floor and Narcissa's eyes widened.

--------

Meanwhile.....

"I didn't hurt you, did I?" Draco asked as soon as they entered the dungeons of the Manor, after making sure to spend at least five minutes in his wing so as to make sure no one followed them.

"Don't worry, you didn't hurt me. But do you think we managed to push You-Know-Who towards the decision we want him to take?"

"I think so. We certainly made it clear that we hated each other with ever fiber of our being, and that this rivalry has been going on for years. And my parents would confirm that as well. Plus, you talked about the apparent power you have in Italy."

"If everything went according to the plan, then he should be taking that decision right now." Hermione nodded. They strode in silence for a while until she broke the silence by saying, "I-I think the real anger in my voice when I told you not to call me a commoner, would persuade him as well."

"I know that." When she looked at him with a confused expression, Draco added, "I am an Occlumens and a Legilimens, remember? I felt your anger that time. And well I... I may or may not have divulged in your mind-"

"Why the heck would you do that? That too without my permission no less-"

"It was to make sure that you were still acting according to the plan, and not on your personal feelings." The blond wizard defended his actions. "And I guess, even if your feelings were included, the plan worked."

"The word commoner just reminded me of the word you had called me all these years." Hermione let out a dry chuckle.

But his next three words shocked her to no end.

"I am sorry." Draco whispered.

"What?"

"If we are to work together to defeat the Dark Lord, we at least need to do a truce. And in order to do that, this conversation needs to be done." The Slytherin Prince sighed and continued, "I am sorry for everything I did to you over these past few years, Granger. The bullying, name calling, everything. I am sorry, Granger. You didn't deserve any of that."

"Thank you." Hermione softly said. "And I am sorry too."

He snorted. "Trust me, Granger, you have absolutely nothing to apologise for."

"I do!" She insisted. "I really have to apologise for not coming forward to help you. For being so quick to judge and too slow to understand."

"What do you mean?" Draco frowned.

"Sixth year." She sighed. "I-Harry had this theory of you being a Death Eater, and I tried so hard to make him understand that he was being delusional. And that nothing was like that."

"Probably the first and only time Saint oh I am a Hero but a Zero Potter was right in his whole life."

"Do you actually think of these nicknames beforehand or just come up with them on the spot?"

"On the spot." Draco proudly said and puffed his chest out. "Why? Oh I know. You think they are brilliantly amazing, right?"

"On the contrary, I happen to think they are totally stupid." Hermione shook her head and continued, "Anyways, as I was saying, despite me trying my best to make him believe that he was not being rational, I knew that I was not being right either, completely right, that is."

"Was that the first time the great Hermione Granger confessed that she was not right?"

"Can you shut up?" She rolled her eyes at him, but did appreciate his attempt to lighten the conversation. She could understand that he did not want to talk about their sixth year, but she needed to make him understand her point. "It was like I knew something was wrong. No, I did not actually think that you were a Death Eater, but I knew that something was not right with you."

"I saw you getting sicker day by day." Hermione continued, "You were always staring off into space. And then Harry used Sectumsempra on you know... I will let you know that I did shout at him after that, he had no right to do so, and he should have been punished properly, and not just given a  bunch of detentions."

"Dumbledore wouldn't have ever let that happen." Draco shook his head. "His favorite was Potter, and that was crystal clear. He simply hated the Slytherins."

"As much as I would like to disagree with that fact, it is true." She sighed. "In first year, he could have announced the results before the feast, and not waited until the last second to snatch the House Cup away from the Slytherins, and that too specially when all we did was break some rules. Yes, I was happy that we won, but it doesn't make it right. And then in sixth year, he knew all along that you had been tasked to kill him, yet he didn't approach you. Dumbledore waited until the last second, when it was obvious that you won't be able to join the Order, to give you the offer of his help."

"Wait a second, how did you know all of that?" He frowned at her.

"Well, you see, Harry was actually present on the Astronomy Tower that night." Hermione sheepishly looked at him, and told him everything about that.

When he got even more confused, she told him about the memory of Snape that Harry had seen during the battle.

Draco stayed quiet after that, not knowing what to say.

After a while, Hermione broke the silence again. "I never got to thank you for saving my life."

"You don't have to thank me for saving you from Rabastan." The blond wizard rolled his eyes. "All I did, when he kept searching for you, was distract him by changing the topic and then telling him that Dolohov was going to lead a raid soon, and that he didn't plan on keeping Rabastan on the team. That's all, and he literally ran away to find Dolohov. That power hungry freak."

"I would have used a spell on him, for example Confundus." He continued, "But I immediately panicked upon seeing him, so I did whatever came into my mind. Besides, you need to have proper control while using wandless nonverbal magic."

"I know but still, you saved me. And well, I am thankful that the Wizarding World doesn't know about CCTV  cameras, otherwise we would have been caught long ago." Hermione sighed.

"CCTV- what?" Draco narrowed his eyes on her. "What stupid thing are you talking about, Granger?"

"It is not stupid-"

"The other day you were talking some daily soaps. Like, do you love talking about stupid things which make no sense? Don't you have anything better to do?"

Hermione simply shook her head and quickly walked away from there, leaving Draco trying to follow her while shouting her name.

And when he did reach her, he scowled at her while Hermione simply laughed at his expression and continued ignoring him.

Oh she couldn't wait until the great Draco Malfoy got to know about Muggle things.

After a while, it was Draco who broke the silence this time. "You know, when you had said that you had to apologise to me, I actually thought that you were going to apologise to me for punching me in third year."

"Oh please." She chuckled. "I would never apologise for that. The image of you running away from there with a scared look on your face was so good."

"You broke my nose, you know?"

"Maybe I did, maybe I didn't. But you totally deserved that."

"Maybe I did, maybe I didn't." Draco repeated her words. "But then if it is like that, then you totally deserved the hex I sent at you in fourth year, even if it wasn't meant for you."

If it wasn't for the mischievous glint in his grey eyes, Hermione would have thought that he was the same old fourteen year old wizard who bullied her and her friends.

Still, the Gryffindor Princess playfully glared at him. But before she could take her wand out to do anything, Draco accioed it towards him and ran away from there.

And this time, it was Hermione who was running after him while screaming his name.

Oh how the tables had turned.

It was actually a good thing that she had cast Muffliato around them as soon as they had entered the dungeons.

------------

Almost an hour later, Hermione and Draco concluded that they had done enough loitering around, and Voldemort would have made his decision by now.

Sure enough, when the two arrived in the drawing room, they found the Dark Lord sitting on the couch while Draco's parents stood behind him.

They were told to sit down on the couch next to that one, as Voldemort spoke, "Draco Malfoy and Miss Romano, I have made a decision for you two, and I hope that you two will follow it."

"Of course, My Lord." Hermione spoke in an annoyingly sweet voice and then snuck a look at the wizard sitting next to her. "I will follow every order of yours. However, I can't say the same for Malfoy here. He loves breaking rules and disobeying orders, you see."

Before Draco could say anything, the Dark Lord smirked added, "Very well, Miss Romano. Then I think you will have no problem marrying young Malfoy here."

They started to protest, as per the plan of course, but were quieted down. "My decision is final. And so, nothing you two say will affect that. I have some work to do, so Lucius and his wife will explain everything to you both. I should not hear any complaints, specially from you, Draco Malfoy."

The young wizard hastily nodded as the Dark Wizard traced his jawline with a finger and then left the room.

"What is this, Narcissa?" Hermione spoke as soon as the door closed with a wave of Lucius' hand. "What is going on?"

"You heard what the Dark Lord spoke, dear." The Malfoy matriarch smiled sadly at them. "He wants you two to marry each other, that too very soon."

"But what is the reason behind that?" Draco asked his parents. "I don't understand this. Romano literally arrived here just a few days back, and the Dark Lord doesn't even know her properly, nor there was any kind of betrothal between us. So why did he make this decision?"

"There are some reasons for that, son." Lucius told him. "First, he wants you to suffer. As if torturing you wasn't enough, he wants you to be trapped in a loveless marriage. He wants you to spend the rest of your life with a witch whom you hate more than anything, and who will never let you be happy.

"Secondly," He continued. "He wants the control of power in Italy. And as Miss Roman- I am sorry, I mean Amelia has many contacts there, he figured it will help him. If she is the daughter in law of one of his oldest Death Eaters, then it will create good image for him there."

Hermione and Draco mentally smirked.

Point one to them, point zero to Voldemort.

"Absolutely ridiculous." The Malfoy Heir shook his head. "He wants us to marry just for him to gain power? Why can't he get those contacts on his own?"

Now this wasn't actually part of the plan, but he needed to know that in case Voldemort found a flaw in their plan anytime.

"It is not as easy as it sounds, Draco." Lucius sighed. "The Death Eaters in Italy... Well, they aren't really very cooperative to say the least. Besides, there is not much fear of the Dark Lord there. So the only way to get that power is through Amelia. And therefore, he requires the two of you to marry."

"Don't we get any say in this?" Hermione asked, making sure to let her voice convey a feeling of sadness and hopelessness.

"I am sorry, my dear." Narcissa sat down next to her, letting the Gryffindor witch rest her head on her shoulder. "There is nothing that can be done. Lucius and I tried to convince him otherwise, but it was to no avail. He has already ordered the house elves to begin the preparations of the wedding. He wants this to be done as soon as possible."

As Narcissa started stroking her hair gently, Hermione saw Draco leaving the room with his father in her peripheral vision.

It was time for the second part of their plan.

-----------

"Are you sure you still want to do this, Hermione?" Harry asked his best friend. "Do you still want to marry Malfoy? You know that you can still back out from the plan."

"I know I can, Harry." Hermione sighed as she looked at the wedding dress Narcissa had given to her. According to her, it had belonged to one of her cousins, who was considered the epitome of beauty, and looked a lot like 'Amelia Romano'. As they didn't have much time for the preparations, let alone for going dress shopping, Hermione had agreed to wear that dress.

And if she was being honest, the dress was really beautiful. So that was not the real problem.

The real problem was this whole thing. The war, their mistake, the plan, and her forced marriage to Draco Malfoy.

She didn't know how the Malfoy Heir was feeling about this, as they hadn't met again in the few hours Hermione had spent at his house before coming back to the Grimmauld Place.

She didn't know if he even felt guilty when he saw his parents doing the preparations. They genuinely liked Amelia, and so they had to be at least a little happy that their son was marrying such a wonderful witch.

But of course, the wonderful witch didn't really exist, did she?

It was all a hoax.

And when eventually the war would end, Hermione didn't know how she would feel after walking away from Draco's life. The Malfoy's life.

Don't get her wrong, she didn't think she liked the family. But at the same time, she knew that she didn't hate them either.

Well at least, she didn't hate Draco. Though the fact that she had never truly hated him was something else.

And she didn't hate his parents either, at least not completely. The things they did in the war, either intentionally or unintentionally, to help the Order, were appreciated by her and she was grateful for that to them.

She could imagine Lucius and Narcissa's faces, when they would realise that they had actually been trapped into this plan.

She could imagine their reaction when they would realise that their son had just been a pawn in this plan and had married a muggle born witch to defeat the dark wizard who had made their lives hell.

Because, Kingsley had told them, in no way should Draco's parents know about their whole plan. It had to be a secret.

"Hermione?" Harry's voice broke her out from her thoughts. "Are you okay?"

"Of course I am." She nervously smiled at him. "I was just lost in some thoughts. Anyways, what were you saying?"

"I was saying that you don't have to marry Malfoy. I am sure there is a way out. Maybe someone else could play the role of Amelia. Or maybe we could think of another plan. You don't have to risk your life for this."

"Says the Chosen One who continuously risked his life to save everyone."

At her comment, the raven haired wizard weakly smirked at her but then turned serious once again. "Don't try to change the topic, Hermione. And please, listen to me. You don't have to be a spy. We can convince Kingsley and-"

"Mr Potter and Miss Granger." McGonagall knocked on the open door. "May I come in?"

"Of course, Professor." Hermione quickly made space on the bed for the Head of the Gryffindor House.

As the older witch sat down on the bed, Harry stood awkwardly in a corner, not knowing what to say, or do.

But thankfully for him, McGonagall made the decision. "Mr Potter, I think I heard Miss Weasley asking about you downstairs. You should go and see her."

The Boy Who Lived understood the reason why his professor was saying that to him and walked out of the room to find his girlfriend, closing the door behind him.

Once that was done, McGonagall turned to Hermione. "I won't lie and say that I don't know what Mr Potter was talking about, and while I do agree with him, that you don't have to do this, I also want to tell you that I know you don't want to back out of this."

"You know me very well, Professor." Hermione smiled at her.

"And I know Mr Malfoy very well too." She nodded. "I know that despite the fact you have agreed to be a spy and partner Mr Malfoy in this plan, and you have decided to marry him as well for this, you still have some doubts about him. Am I right?"

"You are right, Professor." The muggle born witch nodded. "While I am ready to do this plan with him, and I have accepted him as an Order member, I just... Sometimes, I just wonder what if he betrayed us any time? What if all of this is just an act for him?"

"I may not have spent much time with Mr Malfoy, but I certainly do know how that young man's like." McGonagall smiled at her student. "I know that he is not at all an evil person. He stayed as a Death Eater for almost two years to protect his parents. Even before that, he only accepted the Dark Mark as a punishment for what his father did, and to save his mother from getting tortured by Bellatrix."

Hermione wondered how come McGonagall knew that Bellatrix had threatened to torture Narcissa Malfoy.

Draco had never shared anything about the night of his initiation. Even when they had briefly questioned him using Veritaserum, he had only revealed what he had already said on top of the Astronomy Tower.

McGonagall continued, "He wants to defeat You-Know-Who just as much as we all do, and for that, he is willing to do anything. Plus, he was second in class, only behind you. So I think that you two will make a very good spy team. Do you know what to do now, Miss Granger?"

The Gryffindor Princess nodded. "I understood what you meant, Professor. I am ready to take this plan further and marry Malfoy in a few days."

McGonagall smiled and stood up from the bed. Just as she reached the door, she turned around and said, "Remember to not judge Mr Malfoy from his past mistakes, Miss Granger. He is not his father."

-----------

A few days later.....

Knock Knock

"Come in." Hermione said.

"Are you ready?"

"Yes."

"It is time." Blaise sighed and looked at her as she got up from the chair in front of the vanity and turned around to look at him.

"How do I- I mean, how does Amelia Romano look?" The muggle born witch flicked her gaze to her reflection in the mirror. "Acceptable as a pureblood witch?"

"Amelia definitely surpasses almost all pure blooded witches." The Italian wizard nodded. "Draco is a lucky guy."

"Well we are just doing everything according to the plan."

Blaise sighed again. For a second, he had forgotten about the plan. He had forgotten that his blond best friend was not really marrying the witch he loved and who was currently under a disguise.

Just then, they heard someone knock on the door. Hermione asked Blaise to open the door and found Narcissa standing there.

The Malfoy matriarch swiftly walked forwards and kissed the younger witch on her forehead. "You look so beautiful, Amelia. My baby dragon's jaw would drop when he would see you, I am sure."

"Well then let us not keep the dragon waiting for much longer." Hermione grinned as they exited the room.

Blaise told her to place her hand in the crook of his elbow, and when the music started, he started walking her down the aisle, which was in the vast and beautiful gardens of the Malfoy Manor.

At the altar, on the bride's side, Ginny Weasley disguised as Amelia's close friend was standing. She was the only bridesmaid, and therefore, the maid of honour as well. The smile on her face was looking so fake and so real at the same time.

On the other side, Theo stood in place of the best man, next to whom, Blaise would be standing after the latter had given away his fake step sister to his best friend.

And lastly, the groom.

To say that Draco was looking really handsome would be an understatement. Despite the fact that she knew they were all just playing their roles according to the plan, Hermione thought that the Malfoy Heir looked at her with genuine affection in his grey eyes.

Oh who was she kidding? Draco would never look at her like she was his world.

But she couldn't deny the fact that she only looked at Draco as she walked towards the altar. It was probably to help calm her nerves, but the way he was looking in the expensive wedding robes he was wearing added on to that. Moreover, he had chosen not to slick his hair back and let it fall to his forehead which complimented his eyes perfectly.

Meanwhile, the Slytherin Prince was having a hard time not letting his eyes widened. Hermione, in her disguise of Amelia, was looking simply beautiful. Her simply yet elegant wedding dress which had  a 'V' neck accompanied with thin, barely there, straps added on to Amelia's natural beauty.

She had minimal makeup on, and while her hair was kept down, they were styled in curls and some glittery beads were added here and there.

Draco thought that if it was a real wedding, then maybe he would not have minded enjoying it. He would not have minded wishing it was Hermione's face he was looking at instead of Amelia Romano's.

But they had a plan to complete and a dark wizard to defeat.

After Blaise had taken his place next to Theo, the Ministry official began speaking.  As the two young people had not written their own vows, the official asked them to repeat what he was saying one by one.

The official asked the rings to be brought and first asked Draco to place the ring on Amelia's finger. "With this ring I thee wed."

"Draco Lucius Malfoy, do you take Amelia Marie Romano as your loving wife, for better or worse, through sickness and in health, till death do you part?" He asked.

The Malfoy Heir took a deep breath and nodded. "I do."

Hermione placed the ring on his finger but when she was asked the question, she closed her eyes tightly.

Draco, sensing that she definitely needed some support at that moment, squeezed her hand gently.

To anyone else, it would have looked like a romantic moment.

But Hermione, who had opened her eyes after that, knew that he was just telling her that he was here. That he was her partner in their plan, and that he would not let anything happen to her.

"I do." She replied.

The Ministry official waved his wand and whispered something in Latin to make golden swirls appear on the couple's arms. "Witches and wizards, I now present to you Mr and Mrs Malfoy. Mr Draco, you may kiss the bride."

Draco slowly raised his hands to push back the veil and lowered his face to hers. Hermione closed her just as his eyelashes brushed her cheek.

"Remember the plan." He whispered before placing his lips on her, his hands resting lightly on her waist. She rested her hands on his biceps and kissed him back.

Draco pulled back from his wife as everyone around them started cheering and his parents walked towards them.

After everyone had finished congratulating them, they headed inside the Manor for reception. The pair started the dance and after twirling around on a few songs, they decided to have some food.

They stayed long enough for every guest to talk with them, and for Voldemort himself to tell them to behave like a married couple. Hermione and Draco claimed that they were tired and with knowing looks on their faces, his parents and the others allowed them to head to their room.

On the way to Draco's room, Hermione hands were fiddling continuously as she was shaking a little because of fear and nervousness, as her husband levitated their gifts and her bags behind them.

But to her surprise, he opened the door of the room next to his. He placed the bags and gifts in a corner and then turned to look at her.

Hermione glanced back at the bed and then whispered, "I-I have never done this or anything of this sort before. So, you know, I am a vi-"

"I am not going to force you to do anything you don't want to, Granger." Draco cut her off. "This marriage is just an act, so we don't have to, you know, do anything."

He walked backwards until he reached the door. "You have to stay in this room as the house elves will be cleaning your old room, and no one should know that we are not staying in the same room. My room is just next to this, so we should be able to keep up the act."

After telling her to contact him through the galleon if she needed anything, Draco left the room.

Hermione sighed and sat down on the bed, bending down to remove her heels. She would open her bags later on.

And so, their married life had begun.
