CHAPTER TWO: THE DREAM

1.4k words; edit by sondercoyfish

It happened as you slept. Your dreams of blurred visions of you and your father studying side-by-side faded away. You were startled when he became out of reach, when you were suddenly thrust into a vision you couldn't understand. You were floating amongst the stars, your arms spread to your sides, your hair flowing behind you.

A dream had never felt this real. You were laying on the sofa, your body knew, but your mind was elsewhere. And your eyes widened as the stars consumed you and flashes of things you couldn't comprehend danced across your eyes.

A woman you couldn't see, two lightsabers in hand. She whispered your name and then you could see it all, hear it all, feel it all. The sound of deep, mechanical breathing. Lightsabers clashing. Blasters firing. Smoke was in front of your face. You desperately tried to wave it away but it stuck to your skin.

I don't want things to change.

But you cannot stop change. No more than you can stop the suns from setting.

You were paralyzed but you were seeing lifetimes go by. Your mind raced to comprehend it; to comprehend the speed and time you were experiencing like this. You were watching a galaxy go by in front of you.

Obi-Wan. Promise me you will train the boy.

Yes, Master.

He... is the Chosen One. He will bring balance. Train him.

And then you could see your father, just a young boy, cradling a man's face in his hands as he sobbed. Qui-Gon, the Master he could hardly muster up the strength to speak about with becoming tearful.

All of this, the female's voice whispered, has led to you.

You knew she was speaking to you, even though you couldn't place her voice with anyone you knew. Me

The images shifted and you were pulled further into the future.

You are strong and wise, Anakin, and I am proud of you. I have trained you since you were a small boy and you have become a far greater Jedi than I could ever hope to be.

Your father and another boy, the boy who failed him, the boy who caused him to run away to Tatooine for exile. You knew of this boy through stories that ended as they all did, with your father turning away so you couldn't see the tears in his eyes.

Finally you could see it, the breaking of Anakin and your father's relationship. You watched your father experience the fall of his padawan. It ended with a broken-hearted gaze on the burned remains of his brother.

You were my brother Anakin! I loved you.

It hurt you so deeply to see him that way. Your father's past was what drove him to protect you the way that he did. All you could do was watch as he trudged sadly up the charred hill. If you could move, you'd be running to his side.

Why are you showing me all of this? you must have at least whispered it out loud, even though you couldn't hear yourself speak.

You wanted to see your place in this story. And here it is.

Ben was walking in the darkness of Tatooine, concealed by his hood, hurriedly rushing forward, ignoring the threatening sounds of the Sand People that lurked nearby. You were following behind him like you were there. You knew what you were watching before you could see it happen.

Your father picked up the small toddler from the pit of sand. The baby who didn't cry, but had called for him through the Force. It was you. It was a memory you couldn't recall, but one that he talked about often.

You are not the last hope, but you are on the same path as him. The Force chose you, young Kenobi, the woman said. And so I am calling for you and pleading for help. There is a cause out there that is greater than you know. A cause out there that fights to restore the peace of the galaxy --- to restore what the Jedi should have been a long time ago. Peacemakers.

Lord Vader is still alive and he is still fighting to crush what good is left in the galaxy. The Empire that he has built is threatening to destroy the last bit of hope the Rebellion has. Anakin Skywalker failed your father, but you will not. You are capable of more than you know. And I must ask you to act on your strength.

As she spoke, you could see nothing but shadows. As the shadows moved, you saw glimpses of a man that you did not know. His face was bruised and his spirit looked broken. He fought against the restraints locked on his wrists as he was led down a long corridor full of troopers.

Far away from Tatooine, on a Star Destroyer that is nearing the location of the soon-to-be Death Star, a man is being held captive and faces execution at the hands of the Empire. Captain Cassian Andor is a member of the Rebellion and a Fulcrum. His safety is of vital importance to the Rebel Alliance. If he dies, the Rebellion will not survive much longer. I believe that he is one of the keys that will lead to the galaxy's last hope. And you... I see the same inside of you.

Daughter of Obi-Wan Kenobi, you will find him. I have given you all that you need. The Force will guide your journey. Start at Mos Eisley and you will find the rest of your way. Go find him. Save him. And save the Rebellion. Quickly now. They are running out of time.

Time.

And just like that you were falling away from the stars. You sat up as they fell away, your vision blurred as your mind couldn't comprehend the sight of your ordinary life, of the same old home you'd always lived in.

What you were seeing didn't match the pace of your thoughts. Move, your head told you. Do something!

Do what?

What were you capable of doing, exactly? Who did that woman think she was? She didn't know you. You knew the ways of the Force, sure, but you weren't an expert. There were people far more capable than you. People like Ben, who understood war and the ways of the Jedi. You were just a young girl, born a year or so before the fall of the Republic, abandoned on the desert planet of Tatooine by two parents who couldn't think of a better way of getting rid of their unwanted child.

But you did have power. You did have strength. You were brave. Brave enough to be a Jedi in this time of darkness. Brave enough to be a soldier.

I do know that one day you will be ready, even if you don't feel like you are. Even if I don't feel like you are.

You were acting before you could think further. A bag was packed with a fresh set of clothes, a medpac, credits, and a pack of food. You looked around the house with urgency. You had a mission that you had to complete --- but what about your father?

Ben --- Obi-Wan Kenobi. Your Master, your father, your caretaker, your best friend. You would break his heart by leaving. Would he understand?

He had to. Perhaps he could see it. He knew you were going to grow up to be better than even he was, so he had to know of this. Your vision had brought the entire story to light. Anakin Skywalker betrayed your father and became Darth Vader. Your father was here on Tatooine to protect Luke Skywalker.

Luke had to be the last hope.

And you were somehow crucial to the story of rebellion. Crucial to the survival of this boy.

With cold fingertips and an aching heart, you pulled a piece of stationary from your journal. You scribbled on the paper the best explanation you could give. It ended with the best apology you could think of. And finally, before you signed it, you told him that you loved him and how much --- and that you would be back soon. You promised.

And with that promise you left, making every intention to keep it. You would be back to your father once the Captain was safe and the Rebellion had hope restored once again.

You left your home and stepped out into the darkness of night, concealed by the lack of light and by the grey poncho covering your hair. Your journey would take many days and you hoped you would be quick enough.

But nothing slowed you down more than when you heard your father's voice cut through the night, calling out your name, telling you to come home.
