CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN: GONE GIRL !

9x14

━━━━━━

"OH, COME ON, HE'S SO INTO HER!" Casey told her fiancé as she changes her son's diaper on the changing table in the nursery. "I'm not saying there's not something between them, I'm saying neither of them are reciprocating their very obvious feelings towards one another because of their work." Spencer establishes, cleaning the nursery up a bit.

"Besides, Hotch and Beth's breakup is still very recent and Vivian hasn't been with anyone since her husband died. It could be too soon for both of them."

Casey turns towards her fiancé for a split second before turning back to her son. "I agree, but Hotch and Vivian need to just stop being... so difficult and just go on a date." Christopher babbles a bit and Casey makes a face towards the baby. "You agree with Mommy, right? Right?" She tickles her smiling son.

"Hey, check it out," Casey calls her husband over. "He's got that same little dopey smile you have." She chuckles and this causes Spencer to break out with that same dopey smile.

"I'm just saying: it's so obvious. Hotch is into Vivian and Vivian is into Hotch. I mean, that could only explain why she stayed after we got back from maternal and paternal leave." Casey explained as she put her baby's onesie back on and placed him inside his crib.

Both Spencer and Casey look down at their self-occupied baby. "You really think so?" Spencer asked. "Spence, trust me, it took us years to get together. I know what mutual pining looks like. I'm trying to make sure that doesn't happen to them." Suddenly, Casey's cell phone started ringing in her pocket. She checks the Caller ID and to her surprise —  "It's Will."

Spencer furrows his brows. "Why's he calling?" He asks. "I don't know." Casey shrugs and then motions towards Christopher. "You got him?" Spencer nods as he starts to tuck in his son. "Yeah."

Casey answers her cell phone as she walks out of the nursery. "Hey, Will. What's up?" She asks. "Hey, Casey. Is JJ over at your apartment by any chance?" Will asks and Casey furrows her brows. "Uh, no. Why? Is she not home?"

"No, she's been gone for hours. I'm getting real worried. I keep trying her cell but it keeps going to voicemail." Casey is confused, that was not like JJ. "I think she's in trouble." Will tells.

Immediately, in the pit of her stomach, Casey felt that something was wrong. JJ always called, JJ was always careful. It wasn't like her to be gone and not tell anyone about where she was. "Okay, uh, call Hotch, tell him everything you just told me. We'll meet you at the BAU." Casey hangs up and she looks towards Spencer, standing at the doorway.

"What's going on?" Spencer asks. "Call Edith so she can watch Christopher, we gotta get to the BAU. JJ might be in trouble."

After Edith arrived at the apartment, Spencer and Casey quickly left and met up with Morgan, who'd been called in on JJ being missing. Everyone was now caught up with what was going on. Not only was JJ was missing, Agent Cruz was also missing.

"The Director's behind closed doors with the undersecretary of arms control and international security affairs. Hotch is on his way to the State department with Hudson to get some answers." Morgan informed and Casey's head whipped forward in thought. "Why Hudson?" She questioned, curiosity. "Something about how she's got connections to the state department." Morgan answered.

Rossi and Blake had finally arrived from checking out Cruz's place beforehand. "We found JJ's cell phone, but there wasn't any sign of her." Reid informs the two as they make it up to conference room. "Cruz is missing, too." Rossi tells. "His car is still in his garage, but mail and newspapers suggest that he's been gone at least 24 hours."

The five enter the conference room as Garcia is trying to do more digging. "I'm trying. I'm trying--I'm trying to pull data off of JJ's phone, but it's like level 9 security." Garcia informs. "It would make Snowden weep."

"What about cell phone records?" Blake questions.
"Encrypted," Garcia tells. "JJ's and Cruz's."

"That's not surprising if they work for the State department." Rossi says. "But if that assignment was a backstop, then JJ's transfer as DOD. Liaison was her cover." Morgan informs.

"So that year she was transferred, it was for some top-secret assignment and she didn't even know about it." Casey thinks aloud. That year was a tough year. She had remembered going to JJ's house numerous times while grieving over Emily's death. She never even asked JJ how she doing during that time. It made her look back on how different life was then. "So what was she really doing that year?" Spencer questioned.

"That's the first question Hotch is gonna ask. Strauss was pressured by the Executive branch to push JJ's transfer through in 2010, so she would have known the reason why." Morgan told.

"Any assignment Strauss authorized would be archived in the SCIF." Spencer tells. "That facility is code word classified." Garcia informs, not knowing how they'd be able to get through there.

"Couldn't Anderson get us in?" Casey questions and Morgan nods in thought. "Yeah, he archives those reports." Casey shrugs, looking towards Spencer and Garcia. "There you go."

"Blake, Rossi, Casey — JJ couldn't have used the SCIF without drawing attention. She probably has it foxholed right here in the BAU. We just need to find it." Morgan orders.

"And what are you not telling us?" Blake asks the question everyone else is wondering. Casey looks down, not even wanting to think about what JJ is going through right now.

"Whoever took Cruz and JJ is highly trained and highly organized. Justice, Defense, and State-- they wouldn't be on edge like this if this was a simple matter of two missing agents." Morgan explained.

"Is Hotch worried that the recovery won't be made a priority?" Rossi asks.

"It's our job to find the leverage that assures it is. Let's get it done." With that, the team goes their separate ways but not before Casey squeezes Spencer's hand and nods to him before she joins Blake and Rossi.

Casey had had a hunch where JJ could've kept her files and how she could've gone through the SCIF and that would've been in her old liaison office — which she visited frequently as an intern and as a teenager.

"This has to be JJ's foxhole. It was her office when she was liaison." Rossi informs to Blake. "You don't know how many times I visited when I was seventeen. Most days Gideon didn't even know I was here." Casey reminisced. "Hotch handles most of the paperwork now, but before JJ was a profiler, she reviewed cases in here." Casey tells Blake.

"Well, she wouldn't hide anything too far out of reach." Blake tells and finally finds something. A case of some sorts. "All right, 4 digits. Any ideas?" Blake looks in between Rossi and Casey.

"Henry's birthday is November 12." Rossi thinks and Blake types in the words but it beeps back at her in rejection. "1112, that's too easy."

"Uh, try 2008, that's the year she became a mom." Casey says. Blake puts in the digits and to Casey's surprise, it unlocks. "Yep."

"Don't I know my girl?" Casey sighs in relief.

Inside the case, Blake pulls out a file and looks through it. Casey looks inside to find other files of sorts but the one Blake is holding is the most important right now. "What's INTEGRITY?"

"I don't know," Rossi pulls out his cell phone. "But someone does."

They couldn't do enough digging in time before some people had come and decided that the team didn't need to find their agent or their director and that they could take care of it themselves. The state had taken over this case and now they were left with no other choices.

Except to call in reinforcements.

When Casey found out that Emily Prentiss was coming back from Interpol to help with this case, she was ecstatic about this. Casey hadn't gone to visit in a while on account of the new baby. Casey had frequently sent pictures over of Baby Christopher every time she emailed Emily. But since Christopher came into the picture and her and Spencer going back to work, trips to London and emails became less than frequent. Now, here Emily was over the phone on her way to them, discussing INTEGRITY with the BAU.

"According to Interpol data, Askari is as bad as they get. Highly educated member of the Republican Guard caught torturing POWs off the clock for fun. I'm sending you his profile now." Emily explained.

Phone beeps were heard, indicating that the team had gotten the message. "So this is who has JJ?" Garcia questioned. "His name speaks volumes. Tivon means "student of nature, " yet Askari means soldier." Blake told.

"Askari's methods appear well documented. He's organized, he's meticulous. He typically spends 24 hours with his subjects before they break." Hotch explains. "He's had Cruz at least that long." Reid interferes.
"It looks like this guy uses most of the standard torture techniques." Morgan says. "He even keeps his ritual to an established timeline, a so-called perfect methodology evolved through years of practice." Rossi adds.
"No sexual torture," Vivian says. "Maybe he has lines he doesn't cross." Casey looks up, "Or maybe he hasn't needed to use them. Maybe there's a time limit to when he does." She says.
"Typically, professional torturers are driven by a false sense of moral superiority. They don't derive sexual pleasure from the cruelty they inflict." Spencer stated.
"But Askari isn't just a torturer. He's a sadistic serial killer." Casey says. "And they love getting off." Rossi adds.

Emily then receives a file and she skims through it before speaking. "Guys, I may have two more victims we can attribute to Askari. Savin Mubari and his wife, Nadia. He was a known confidant to Bin Laden's. Both were at the camp where JJ worked."

"Then JJ would have been assigned to interrogate Nadia." Hotch figures. "Do we know what happened to her?" Vivian questions. "MO matches all of Askari's victims except for one thing. She was raped." Emily says.

"So what was different about her?" Blake asks. "Maybe she lasted the longest," Reid said, sending shivers down Casey's spine. "If his ritual dictates a specific timeline, any new aspect would fall later in his routine."
"So the longer JJ holds out, the greater the likelihood that'll happen to her." Morgan said. "So how much time does JJ have?" Garcia asks, reading Casey's mind as Hotch hauntingly answers: "A few hours."

With that lingering in her head, Casey immediately backs out from her rolling chair, stands up and quietly says, "Excuse me." She leaves the room and everyone can see just how tense she is. Spencer backs out from his chair too, to go and follow her:

Casey turns the corner and feels like she's about to be sick. She swallows the lump in her throat as Spencer trails behind her. "Casey." The girl sniffles as she looks down.

"I have spent months... so cooped up on Christopher and our family. What Christopher wants, what I want, what you want. And even when Emily died and that whole situation happened, I was so involved in myself and my feelings." Casey looks at Spencer. "Am I really that selfish that I didn't see what was going on with JJ this entire time? What she was going through? The pain she endured?"

Casey looks down as Spencer rubs her back to calm her. "I'm scared," She says. "Hell, forget scared. I'm terrified of what's gonna happen to her if we don't get to her in time."

Spencer looks at his fiancée and stops rubbing her back. "We'll get to her. You know we will." He says, putting a hand to her face as he caresses her cheek.
Casey shakes her head. "JJ is like my sister. She's my person, she tells me everything. If something happens to her... I swear to God..." Casey didn't even want to think about what was going to happen if they didn't get to her in time. She was scared.

"What's your gut feeling telling you?" Spencer asks and Casey sniffles, calming herself a bit before thinking. She knew with the reinforcements they had to call in, they were eventually going to find her.
Casey took a deep breath and knew that JJ was strong and if anyone would survive this, it was gonna be her. "She's gonna make it through." She tells.

Once Emily arrived, Garcia had sent out coordinates in the area for where JJ might be held and the team had decided to go and find out the coordinates. Casey was with Spencer, Blake and Rossi while Hotch, Derek, Vivian and Emily were in the other car.

Garcia was now explaining to the team about the sequence JJ must've sent over. "JJ must have logged in with a panic sequence that triggered a silent alarm. It's pretty standard protocol. Enter your security codes backwards and a preset alarm is activated, in this case, Blackbird. Oh, God, JJ sent that alert 30 minutes ago. They must have looped the system. That's why I couldn't read any hard-lines."

"Which of the servers sent the message?" Hotch asks. "Um..." Before Garcia could respond, other voices were heard and Casey could only guess that they were caught by the state found them. "Utherlay oadchurchbray. Utherlay oadchurchbray." Garcia repeated and then the call cut out.

"You don't need to be a linguist to recognize pig Latin." Blake spoke. "Luther and Broadchurch is the location of Cramer Industries. It's a research and development company." Reid said.
"R and D--that's gotta be a front for clandestine operations." Morgan spoke. "Hang on." Hotch whipped the car around and the other car followed.

Soon enough, the two cars met and they knew they were in the right building. Casey split off with Hotch and Emily and Casey held her gun up in front of her as they searched the side of the building quietly. Guns were being fired outside the building as they heard and scoped the building.

They had finally found the room, with the door open and Hotch fired shots at Askari and successfully hit him, killing him instantly. JJ's hands were handcuffed up above her head to a pipe and she looked absolutely terrified but she was alive. Casey could've kicked the crap out of Askari's dead body but seeing JJ alive was mire relief than anything.

Casey and Emily had decided to try and help her down as Hotch took care of Matt. "Emily," JJ said, tearfully relieved. "I knew they'd call you. I knew it." Emily had uncuffed her and JJ put her arms down and Emily unchained her feet.

Casey couldn't help but give JJ a big hug as JJ held her tightly before immediately releasing. "Are you okay?" Emily questions. "I'm fine. Help Matt, please." Casey rubs JJ's back as Emily made her way over to Matt and Hotch and Casey had found herself walking towards them as well.

"Hastings is headed to the roof. You have to stop him." Matt breathed out and Casey noticed he was laying in a puddle of his own blood. "Comms aren't working down here. He's lost a lot of blood. How's JJ?" Hotch asked.

"She's standing, but she's—" Both Emily and Casey look back and see that JJ was nowhere to be seen. "Where'd she go?" Casey questioned.

"She went to get Hastings." Hotch assumes. "It's personal for her." Matt tells. "Go help her, I've got him." Hotch assures before both Emily and Casey decide to follow after JJ's footsteps with guns in their hands and vests strapped on tightly.

They make their way to the middle of the gun fight and it quickly ends as both Emily and Casey head up towards the roof to follow JJ and Hastings. JJ is firing shots at Hastings and he fired back and Casey makes her way over to see JJ. Emily fires some shots and Casey splits off in a different direction to shoot him as well and follows after him.

A helicopter is close by and is ready to pick Hastings up but there's no way in hell that's happening on Casey's watch as she follows him and tackles him down to the ground. Hastings kicks the girl off but luckily, Emily steps in to get him down with JJ's help. It's a tough fight between JJ and Hastings.

JJ rolls Hastings off the building and nearly joins him but Casey is quick and grabs her arms. "I got you. I got you." Casey breathes out as she pulls her up and Emily helps over as well. Casey looks down and sees that Hastings is dead.

         It's finally over.
JJ's alive and Askari and Hastings are gone.

━━━━━━

It had been at least a week since JJ was taken. Spencer and Casey had offered their place for Emily to stay at for the week and Emily was happy with it as long as she could spend a little time with baby Christopher.

Casey was JJ's frequent visitor at the hospital until she was able to go home two days later. And when JJ went home, Casey had continuously called her to check in and see how she was doing every ten minutes to the point where she knew she was annoying her and Spencer had to interfere and even Emily did, at times.

Today was Emily's last day before she had to go back to Interpol so the BAU, along with Will had decided to go out for drinks and laughs. Casey wrapped her arm about Spencer's arm as she drank from her virgin margarita and talked with her team.

"Emily, how much longer do we have you?" Hotch questioned. "Um..." Emily checked her watch. "Six hours." Garcia sighed bittersweetly, "It's too soon."

"Are you sure you don't wanna stay another week? Spencer and I don't mind, at all." Casey spoke as Spencer shook his head, agreeing with his fiancée. Emily sighed, "I would if I could, but you know... work." Casey shrugged, thinking it was worth a shot.

"I'm just glad I finally got to meet you." Blake spoke. "Me, too. Especially when these two here won't stop talking about you." Vivian told, motioning towards Hotch and Casey. "But we've heard amazing things."

"All lies." Emily chuckles. "No," JJ says. "No more lies. Nothing but the truth from now on." She looks towards Will as the two share a kiss and the night is filled with love and laughter and more memories made.
