CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE: THE CALLER !
9x10
━━━━━━
AS USUAL, THE TEAM GOT CALLED IN FOR ANOTHER CASE. Garcia had now been telling them what the case consisted of. "We just got a call from St. Louis. A missing child, a 10-year-old, Andrew Taffert. Parents Lida and Malcolm.
Father found blood on the front door this morning." Garcia stated.
"I take it no test results on the blood yet." Morgan guessed. "No. That would be correct." Garcia answered. "No signs of forced entry or a struggle according to the initial police report." JJ told. "Mom and Dad put him to bed at 10:00, woke up this morning, he was gone." Garcia told.
"Any visitors or workers at the house recently?" Casey questioned. "No, but the parents say in the last two weeks they've received 5 phone calls from what sounds like a little boy prank calling them." Garcia stated. "They complained to authorities, but police determined that no laws had been broken." Hotch added.
"Mm-hmm. The little boy says, 'I'm gonna get you.' According the police reports, there's a lot of crazy people talking in the background. It sounds like it's coming from an asylum or a prison." Garcia explained.
"Stalker?" Casey asked. "We've run checks through the family. They're as close as they could be. If there's a stalker, they wouldn't know they had one." Vivian tells.
"I'd say the calls might be coincidental except the boy called again right after the parents found Andy missing, and he had a different message this time. 'Did you see what I did?'" Morgan told, making his coworkers question. "So he's taunting them." JJ told. "Maybe it's about revenge." Casey told.
"'I'm gonna get you' is typically a threat, but in the case of children, it can also be a phrase used during play." Blake told.
Casey looks over at her fiancé, who hasn't said anything about the case and sees that he's muttering to himself. "You okay, babe?" Casey asks, getting the attention of the rest of their coworkers. "Yes, this just sounds similar to a cold case from 15 years ago, Frankie Clayvin of Memphis." Spencer answered.
"Frankie Clayvin," Casey says to herself. "Why does that name sound familiar?"
"That's because Gideon handled it," Rossi tells. "It obviously it predates all of you."
"Frankie Clayvin was 9 years old at the time. He never made it home from school one day. He was found dead in the woods thirty-six hours later 5 miles from his house." Spencer explained to the team. "And Frankie's parents also received prank phone calls from a young boy. I think Frankie's father was the prime suspect at one point." Rossi tells, connecting it to the cases.
"Yeah, the police actually tapped the Clayvins' phone, but they couldn't trace the phone calls because they kept bouncing between different pay phones in the greater Memphis area." Spencer told. "Phone calls before an abduction-murder-- it's a rare signature." JJ said.
"But if it is the same unsub, a dormancy period of 15 years is highly unusual." Morgan told. "Could be looking at a copycat." Vivian stated. "If I'm not mistaken, Frankie Clayvin was killed within two hours of his abduction." Rossi said.
"Which means we're wasting time," Hotch told and stood up. "Let's go."
The team had left the conference room and JJ and Casey had been the only ones left. JJ walks up to Casey, tossing her bag over her shoulder. "You doing okay?" JJ asks, knowing that she and Casey have been taking the last few cases involving kids to heart. "Better than ever, actually. I've been balancing work and motherhood and you get it. It's been getting better." Casey smiled, truthfully. The past few weeks have been pretty good for Casey and she was now learning how to balance and getting better with letting her child be a child and to stop smothering her baby.
"That's good to hear." JJ tells.
"But enough about me for once. What about you?" Casey asked. "Same old, same old. Will and Henry, you know how it is." JJ answered and Casey nodded, "Glad to hear that you're doing good."
Truthfully, Casey could tell that for the past few months, something was off with JJ. Even before she had the baby, she could just sense it. She just didn't know what it was. And she wanted to find out, but she knew that if she pried any harder, it looked suspicious. But she knew that JJ could talk to her about anything, right?
The team headed into the jet where Garcia was debriefing the team about the case and connecting it to Frankie Clayvin's case. Casey was currently in the couch with her fiancé, resting her legs on top of his lap as she debriefed herself. "Just confirmed there was a 10-minute segment on the unsolved Frankie Clayvin murder on a low-rated cable show 12 years ago." Garcia told.
"Even with low ratings, probably a half million people saw it." Spencer told. "376,000," Garcia clarified. "It's not often I get to correct another genius." Casey smiled at the comment as she looked at Spencer.
"That makes it more likely it could be a copycat." Hotch told. "There's nothing unusual about the Tafferts," Vivian said beside him. "The father, Malcolm is a stockbroker, mother, Lida works at an antique shop."
Everyone looks Morgan's way as he begins to talk and look at the file. "They describe Andy as a bright, well-behaved kid who likes video games." Spencer had noticed something next. "Andy and Frankie are about the same age and build with similar coloring. If this is the same unsub, he definitely has a type."
"We need to consider the possibility that Andy may have been targeted by a pedophile." Morgan stated. "It could be someone he met online playing video games." Hotch figured if that was the case. "If there's any connection to the cold case, though, there was no evidence of sexual assault." Rossi said.
"Just in case, I am pulling up a list of online players as we speak." Garcia said. "If this is the same unsub, he must be using another child to make the prank phone calls. The original boy from fifteen years ago would be grown up by now." Spencer told. "Or it's possible the calls are recordings." Blake responded, looking at her file.
"Guys, I just got a message from the local field office. The analysis from the blood from the Taffert house just came in, and good news-- it is not Andy's. Actually, it's pig's blood." Garcia informed. "Why pig's blood? I don't see them heading to the prom." Casey questioned.
"Between that and the phone calls, it's safe to say this unsub likes to play games." Rossi comments as Casey nods along.
"Blake, Vivian and I will go talk to Frankie Clayvin's father. The rest of you head to the Taffert house." Hotch ordered.
━━━━━━
To keep a long story short, the parents had both been suspected up until Andy's body was found a mile away from their house. Staying at a motel, Andy's mother was then kidnapped by the unsub and they had discovered their unsub was a man named Daniel Milworth, whose mother committed suicide and his father later remarried. He was incarcerated for killing a prostitute eleven years ago, which explained the dormancy period and Mr. Taffert had told them that the man had looked familiar and looked like one of Andy's teachers, Burt Solomon. According to prison psychiatric records, his mom was a Romanian mail order bride. His dad made her perform demeaning sex acts with prostitutes and he forced young Daniel to watch. It explained the background noise of the calls.
Now, Rossi, Blake, Spencer and Casey had headed over to search Burt Solomon's home. They arrived, holding their guns up and tightened vests. They had discovered that he wasn't there after checking every spot in the house. "Someone's been very busy here." Rossi comments, looking around at the computers.
"It's an Angelfish for cloning phone numbers." Rossi says, looking down at a device. Blake clicks the screen with a handkerchief and the recording plays along with a video. Blake pauses the video after. "He used this video to make the recordings." Blake says. "I'll let the others know Daniel Milworth's not here." Rossi tells.
After that, Spencer, Blake and Rossi go to investigate the rest of the house as Casey stays behind with the computers and clicks on a video and is almost in disbelief of what she's watching. She couldn't even make it through one video.
"Hey, guys!" Casey called. "This is just awful. Daniel's father didn't just make him watch the sexual encounters, he made him videotape them. Talk about a sicko." Casey had been looking through the other files and skimmed them and didn't even realize that someone was behind her, ready to kill her.
A gunshot was heard and Casey immediately scrambled up and held her gun up. She saw Burt Solomon on the ground with a gun in his hand and Spencer right behind him. Blake and Rossi followed beside him. Casey looks at Spencer.
"It's a secret hallway connected to his bedroom. Lida Taffert was inside." Spencer explains and Casey looks over at the open door to the tunnel. Rossi checks to see if the man was still breathing and Burt Solomon is dead.
Spencer walks towards his shaken fiancée. "You okay?" He questioned, placing a hand towards her back. Casey looks towards the ground. "I... didn't even hear him." Spencer rubs Casey's back and the two are just ready to go home.
