CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE: THE STRANGE THING ABOUT THE JOHNSONS !
9x09
━━━━━━
CASEY HAD FINALLY CAUGHT UP WITH THE REST OF THE TEAM AT THE CRIME SCENE. Garcia informed the team of the new case and Casey had insisted that Spencer meet her at the crime scene while she waited for her grandmother to arrive. Of course, Edith was a couple of minutes late but she had eventually gotten there.
Casey was grateful that her grandmother moved all the way closer to her and her family but it was times like these that she wish she didn't take so long. Eventually, Casey had driven down to the address and arrived just in time to see the team huddled around a table.
"I'm here, I'm here, I'm sorry. Had to wait on the sitter." Casey told as she joined the group, disheveled. "Sorry," She tells, out of breath. "What did I miss?"
"Water and power company was digging in the backyard, found the remains of two bodies." Hotch debriefs and Casey nods. "How long have the Johnsons lived here?" Blake asks. "Thirty-five years and they're upstanding citizens. Husband's the block captain, the wife's on neighborhood watch." Spencer explains.
"There's no indication of how long the bodies have been here." Vivian stated. "We're waiting for the ME to arrive." Morgan informs. "Forensics will tell us how long they've been down there." Hotch says.
"Where's the family now?" Rossi questions. "The husband and son work at the father's construction company. They're on their way back home right now, and Mrs. Johnson's inside the house." Spencer explains.
"I'm going to go talk to her." Hotch tells. "I'll come with you." Casey says, grasping onto Spencer's hand quickly before leaving.
Casey had followed behind her boss and didn't even realize that Vivian was also trailing behind them, as well. Mrs. Johnson had been standing in the driveway with her husband and son as they had just arrived. "Charles, tell these officers that we don't know anything about dead bodies in our yard!" Mrs. Johnson tells.
"What are you talking about?" Mr. Johnson questions. "They think we're killers." Mrs. Johnson says and Mr. Johnson notices Hotch, Casey and Vivian as Hotch dismisses the officer next to Mrs. Johnson.
"Yes, sir, I'm Agent Hotchner, this is Agent Willows and Agent Hudson, we're with the FBI." Hotch introduced. "I need to talk to you."
As Hotch says this sentence, Casey takes notice of another man in the vehicle and he scrams the first chance he gets. "Lyle?!" Mrs. Johnson yells and that causes Casey and Hotch to chase after the man as Vivian stays behind with the Johnsons. They call his name as they run down the street, chasing him.
Since Casey is the youngest, she is the faster person of the two and she finally catches up when Lyle is about to hop over a wall but fails at doing so once an angry dog barks at him.
Lyle now has no other choice but to surrender. "Down off the wall!" Hotch shouts as he pulls his gun out and aims it at Lyle. "No where to go but down, Lyle." Casey tells as she mimicked Hotch's movements with her gun.
"Turn around slowly and let me see your hands." Hotch tells and finally, Lyle surrenders and he turns to the two and holds his hands up. "Please, don't shoot." He begs.
"We just want to talk, Lyle." Casey tells. "I didn't do nothing." Lyle tells. "I understand," Hotch says. "I just want to talk to you."
With this guy already running for the hills, Casey could tell that the man was obviously guilty of something. The team just had yet to find out. With that, part of the team had taken the family into the BAU for interrogation. Meanwhile, Spencer, Casey, Blake and Vivian had stayed behind, analyzing the bones left and dug up.
Blake and Spencer were discussing things with the ME while Casey and Vivian were looking around the Johnson home. The two were quiet for a while as they examined the living room and living situations. Two separate beds, nice and neat, no problems or issues around.
"Hudson, you were a detective for a while, you think they did it?" Casey questions. "I'm not sure yet," Vivian tells, looking at the photographs. "But judging by the way Lyle ran off the first chance he could, one of them's guilty of something." Vivian explained.
"They all seem pretty adamant about the bodies. At least Mrs. Johnson is." Casey tells. "What do you think, Willows?" Vivian asks. "I don't know what to believe. But that's our job, find the clues and eventually, mystery solved." Casey stated as Vivian looked around.
Casey looked through the window at her fiancé and saw that him and Blake were talking to the MEs. "It's weird, these bodies are just skeletons now but before, they had life. And then, they just go missing." Casey explained, going into deep thought.
"Just like my sister did 30 years ago." Vivian tells and Casey gives a concerned look over to her co-worker. "Pardon?" Casey questions.
Vivian looks up and realizes what she had just said. "Yeah, I just now realized that that was pretty dark. Sorry, I deal with humor to cope with my trauma. And sometimes, it just kinda like, spurts out. My brother would've laughed at that joke." Vivian tells.
It was then that Casey realized she found someone that was just like her. That made twisty, dark jokes about their trauma and expecting other people to just be shocked that they don't know what to do. Casey kinda enjoyed that because it was funny to her. "I say the same thing about drinking," Casey tells. "And my bulimia in junior high."
"Got more under that sleeve?" Vivian asked.
Casey thought for a moment before responding. "Dad's in prison, Mom overdosed on heroin just days after I was born. Terrorized in high school. Kidnapped and shot by people I thought I could trust multiple times, you know, the normal shin-dig." Casey explained.
"Wow." Vivian stated.
"What about you? Any internal wounds you'd like sharing?" Casey asked, enjoying the trauma bonding.
Vivian had thought for a moment before responding next. "Dad was an alcoholic and Mom was a housewife. Two brothers, one sister. Sister was the oldest, she was abducted when she was sixteen and she was presumed dead later. My family eventually got over it, but I didn't. My husband died in a car wreck, my daughter resents me for it. Never have been kidnapped but I was shot at least once or twice on the job by a very angry lady in a grocery store. Plus, I almost drowned saving a child a few years back."
"Wow," Casey said, almost in a shock. "Totally got me beat."
"Thank you, I'll be here all night." Vivian joked.

After discovering that the bodies were around 30 years-old which had been Lyle's age, Spencer and Casey decided to do more digging in the Johnson home. "Lyle would have kept his secrets close to him, easy for him to have access to." Spencer told.
"Probably while he was in bed." Casey pointed out and nudged her head towards the mattress and the two pull it out and Spencer finds a hollow spot of the wood located where Lyle's mattress is at.
He cuts the hollow part out with a pocket knife and discovers some things in a metallic box. "We should get this to forensics." Spencer says. "Look at this, Mary Ann Beck. He lied." Spencer tells as Casey takes a pill bottle from the box and furrows her brow. "Prescribed in 1991."
"Let me see." Casey hands the bottle to Spencer and he takes the pills out of the bottle and examines them. "It's testosterone. My uncle used to take this. Lyle could have been using it to bulk up. If he was still taking it 10 years ago, it could have pushed him over the edge and caused him to beat Mary Ann to death."
After more digging, they had discovered that another body was found and this time it was a man's body that was found. And then soon a forth body was found. They had discovered from Charles Johnson that he had been responsible for murdering them after an incident that happened to him years ago regarding a woman that accused him of rape and it caused men to gang up on him and to castrate him, which explained the testosterone.
After this case, Spencer and Casey had gone home and were reunited with the joy of their beloved son. As soon as they had gotten home, they stayed in his nursery and watched him as he slept so peacefully. Casey took a deep breath and Spencer noticed the girl's breathing and decided to ask: "Are you okay?"
Casey looked his way and nods: "Yeah, I'm okay." She paused and wonders if she could continue. "I know that I've been a little crazy lately when it comes to Christopher so I just wanted to say sorry for—"
"You don't need to be sorry," Spencer interrupts. "It's normal for a mom to miss her child every now and then." Casey leans down to her baby and looks down at him. "I know, I'm just worried that something's gonna happen to him. I get really really worried." Casey said. She'd been feeling this for quite some time and although it was some maternal intuition, she could help but feel scared all the time.
Spencer turns to face his fiancée and holds his hands out. "Take my hands." He whispers and Casey takes another breath and she fits her hands into Spencer's. "I know that I've said this multiple times but he's okay. Look at him, he's at peace. Surely, that assures you." Casey nods and looks at him. "It does." Spencer leans towards the girl and kisses her forehead.
"Let's get ready for bed." Spencer walks out of the nursery and leaves Casey alone with Christopher and she takes one last look at her baby before walking out and turning off the light.
