CHAPTER FIFTY-EIGHT: RUSSIAN STAKEOUT !
10x18
━━━━━━
SPENCER REID AND CASEY WILLOWS ARRIVED INSIDE OF THE CONFERENCE ROOM, BOTH YAWNING SIMULTANEOUSLY. It was 3am and the team was called in for another case — surprise, surprise.
Morgan is the first to notice the tired couple. "Rough night, you two?" He asked, looking towards them. "You could say that." Spencer said. "We finally got Christopher a regular bed for him to sleep in but he refuses to stay in it." Casey stated. "We woke up like five times in the middle of the night to put him back in his bed." Spencer told.
"We encouraged his behavior in climbing into bed with us all the time while we were sleeping but if we keep encouraging it, he's gonna keep doing it." Casey explained. "So, Spencer and I kept taking turns putting him back in bed until we got the call."
"So you two barely got any sleep?" JJ asked. "None." Casey shook her head. "And thank you again, Kate for letting us drop him off at your house. I hope it's not much trouble." Casey tells, grabbing Kate's hand. "No worries. With the new baby coming, my Chris doesn't mind taking a few shifts with your Chris." Kate jokes.
Suddenly, both Hotch and Garcia walk in, ready to deliver their case. They start by showing off security footage of a woman on the top of a staircase. "And that was the last known sighting of Sophie Troy, at 2:37 p.m. on a surveillance video." Garcia informed. "She was coming from having lunch with her husband, and she was going home using the congressional underground tunnels."
"Okay, so it's 3am now. She's been gone a little over 12 hours. That doesn't qualify as a missing person yet." Kate told. "Why are we looking into it?" Casey asked. "The director's personally asked us to handle the case." Hotch answers. "Her husband is Congressman Benjamin Troy, which makes her a VIP." Rossi added on.
"Well, the question is, who's the real target, Sophie or her husband? I mean, is this an attempt to influence him?" Morgan questioned. "Well, the Congressman isn't very high profile. It's his first term, and he has views which have made him unpopular on both sides of the aisle." JJ explained.
"Sophie's a healthcare lawyer on the DC museum board. What was her schedule after lunch? Do you know?" Spencer asked. "Yeah. She was gonna go home, and then she had a foundation meeting at 7:00. She didn't make either." Garcia told.
"Then when she wasn't home by 12:30, the Congressman called family and friends before contacting Capitol police at 1:45. We were notified a half an hour later." Hotch added on.
"Let's go back to her last sighting." Spencer comes around towards the screen. "Do we have the surveillance footage from the other side of the stairwell?"
"Yeah. That would be the Library of Congress lobby and there's no sign of her." Garcia told, pulling the footage up. "It's like she vanished into thin air." Vivian comments.
"Guys, it is possible she just left of her own accord." Kate figured. "But we have to assume it's a kidnapping unless proven otherwise." Rossi stated. "Well, we know she was on the phone before she disappeared." Morgan added.
Hotch gets a text alert on his phone. "We need to pull all her email and cell phone records. The Congressman's here."
After talking with him, Hotch had Congressman Benjamin Troy join the team in the conference room after discovering the story of Sophie Troy going missing had gone out to the public when the team hadn't intended for it.
Garcia pulled up the footage from before and noticed something and pointed it out. "See that shadow on the wall It shifted as the sun went down, but now it's back. The video was on a 6-hour loop before it repeated, which is why no one noticed it right away."
"Organized and premeditated. Whoever took Sophie intended to cover their tracks pretty well." Casey told. "Okay, so even though this isn't the real footage, the lobby would have been crowded with tourists at the time. How was she taken in broad daylight from a public place?" JJ questioned.
"Ironically, it may have been easier to kidnap her in a crowd. It's noisy, hard to see, people are distracted. If she was injected with a sedative, the kidnappers might just look like friends or family helping someone who was feeling ill." Spencer explained.
Hotch walked into the room. "We'll set up a trace phone, and I've already got agents looking into terrorism and organized crime connections. I also need to know on what committees you sit and what pending bills might be influenced by your vote."
The congressman nodded, "Right. I'm on the energy subcommittee. There's a vote in two days to ban fracking on the Pacific Coast."
"Where do you stand on the issue?" Vivian asked.
"I'm for the ban, but I've been getting pressure from the oil companies to vote against it." The congressman told. "They're not the most subtle people in the world. Do you think maybe they have something to do with this?"
"Well, just to be safe, I think you and your family should stay here in protective custody until we get a better handle on things." Hotch told. "Okay, it's just my brother and my mother. They're in Georgetown." Ben told.
"They live together?" Spencer asked, curiously. "Paul just got out of rehab a couple of months ago. He's staying with her till he gets back on his feet." Ben answered to Spencer. "We'll arrange to have them picked up." Hotch then turned over to Anderson at the doorway. "Agent Anderson, will you please show the Congressman where he can stay?" The man nods, "Sure. Congressman, right this way."
Once the man walked out, Hotch turned to his team, to see what maybe they had found regarding the congressman's alibi. "So, uh, we confirmed the Congressman was in his office all afternoon. There was nothing unusual about his behavior." JJ answered.
"And he's responding appropriately." Hotch's phone buzzed and he realized he was getting a call and answered it. "Yeah, Dave, what have you got?" There's a pause. "We'll be right down. Organized Crime may have a lead on the case."
Spencer, Casey and Vivian followed Hotch out the door and followed him into one of the departments downstairs of the building. A detective had been showing the five a tape he had of a recording.
"So who's the package?"
"Who cares? Dyadya just said it's someone important."
"What's our piece of the action?"
"Maybe 5 grand."
Russian was then spoken, causes the man to pause the tape. "Which translates into, 'he'll call us, we just sit tight.'" Hotch looked at the tape and then at the man. "These are low-level guys?" He asks.
"Foot soldiers in the the Mikhalov Bratva, a Russian crime ring that deals in illegal arms. We intercepted a container of Stinger missiles about six months ago they were gonna ship to Syria. Been trying to infiltrate the ring since then, figure out who the major players are." The man explained to them.
"Where is the wiretap?" Casey asks, wondering where they got this tape from. "In their apartment. This recording is from a week ago." Vivian narrowed her eyes at the man. "And you think it's connected to Sophie Troy?" She asks.
"Well, here's what we know," The detective starts. "These low-level guys often do freelance work to pad their income. You need somebody for an unsavory job, this is who you call."
"1-800-thug." Rossi comments as the man nods, "Yeah, pretty much. This kidnapping they're talking about was gonna go down around now."
"Well, probably not a coincidence." Hotch added. "According to Loker, our agent on site, they're still waiting for Dyadya, which means uncle, to call." The detective told.
"Any idea who this 'uncle' is?" Casey questioned. "No," The man answered. "We've been trying to ID him, but no luck so far." Rossi then turns to Hotch and Vivian. "I think we need to be on this." He tells. "I agree, if it leads us to Sophie Troy, we've got a better shot at saving her." Vivian added.
"You're welcome to join us as long as you don't jeopardize our case." The detective told. "Understood." Hotch nods and then turns towards Spencer and Casey and gets an idea how to gain more insight on this case on their side.
━━━━━━
Hotch had sent both Spencer and Casey to this Loker, who had been staking out this apartment for a while. Spencer and Casey's job was to see if this at all connected and if they had Sophie Troy on standby.
Spencer and Casey walked upstairs through the building and found the apartment they were searching for. "214. Is the right one?" Casey asked as Spencer nodded, "Hotch said it was this one." Spencer nodded.
Spencer knocked and the door had unlocked, sounding like it had at least three locks on it and Casey and Spencer were met with a woman, who hesitantly looked through the crack in the door. "Hi. Um, we're looking for Loker." Spencer greeted as Casey smiled politely.
The woman looked at both Casey and Spencer up and down before closing the door and unlocking the chain on the door to let them in. Both Casey and Spencer nod at the woman and she checks outside before closing the door and locking it.
"I'm Dorian Loker. You two must be from the BAU?" The woman holds a hand out and Casey shakes it. "Yeah, uh, I'm Agent Casey Willows and this is Dr. Spencer Reid." The woman then looks at Spencer to go and shake his hand and all he can do is just stare at her hand in front of him, not going out to shake it. "Uh. I don't really shake hands." He tells.
The woman pats Spencer on the hand before dismissing him as she takes her jacket off, places it on the couch and explains what she has. "Great. So we're set up in here. The apartment's directly across the courtyard. The guys just left to get breakfast." She explained.
"What do we know about them?" Casey asks as both Spencer and her follow Loker into a room and Loker lifts the mattress up, revealing her board of evidence. Casey is impressed by this. "Roman Azarof and Taras Yudin work at a trucking company in Anacostia, but really it's just a front for the Russian mob. Roman's bad news. He assaulted a shopkeeper with a chainsaw back in 2008."
"Which one has the uncle that may have kidnapped Sophie Troy?" Spencer questions. "Taras," Loker answers. "But 'uncle' is a loose term. As far as we know, Taras has no blood relatives in the US. He's only been here two years. It could be any older figure in this crime network."
As Casey gets a good look at the board and evidence, Loker speaks a different language and looks at Spencer as she says it. Casey could pick up that she had been speaking Russian. Casey looks towards Spencer as he speaks the language back to her and Casey smirks and looks down at the evidence board.
"And you?" Loker asks, looking at Casey to see if she had spoken Russian as well. Casey shook her head, "Oh, no. Italian and ASL are my specialty. This guy right here has got about 50 languages in his back pocket." Casey explained, motioning to Spencer.
The woman nods, "Good." She lifts a sheet off of her desk. "There's a lot of down time in surveillance. I hope you brought something to read." She tells and Casey was lucky enough to have brought a few books with her to keep her busy. "And coffee too, I hope?" Casey asks.
"Was just about to put on a fresh pot." Loker tells as Spencer lifts a book off of the desk that Loker seemed to be reading. "Great Expectations. You like Charles Dickens?" He asks. "Believe it or not, I haven't read him before. Figured it was high time to change that."
"Especially now since you have all this free time, I bet. I'm actually reading that one too." Casey told.
"He's great," Spencer started. "That moment where Pip finally learns that Estella was always groomed to break men's hearts always---"
"I haven't gotten there yet." Loker interrupted and Casey glared his way. "Neither have I."
Spencer has a sheepish look on his face and puts on his signature tight-lipped smile. "Oh, well, I think you're gonna like that part. Both of you."
"I'm gonna go put on that pot of coffee." Loker tells, excusing herself. "You go do that." Casey says as the woman walks out and Casey looks at her fiancé and holds her arms out and shakes her head at Spencer. "What?" He asks in disbelief. "This is the reason why I don't tell you what I read anymore."
Spencer always did seem to have a knack for ruining the ending of books that Casey was beginning to read. Often times he didn't mean to do it, assuming that maybe Casey already read the book but she hadn't. They actually had a minor fight about it when their relationship first started. It was during that phase where a couple got into a fight about every single little thing. Luckily, they moved on from that but Spencer still says it was probably one of their most stupid fights they ever had.
After Loker had finished making coffee and getting both Spencer and Casey a cup, they had set up their area for when they would be listening in on their conversation from the house next to the building. Loker had been setting up the sound system so they could hear the conversations.
"What's the layout of their place?" Spencer asked, looking out the window. "Same as this one," Loker answers. "The satellite dish outside the window is actually one of our parabolic mikes." She pauses, "They're back."
Spencer looks out the window. "It's a woman." He tells. "A woman?" Casey asks, looking towards Loker. "It's their cleaning lady, Fana." Loker informed and Casey nodded as she grabbed a pair of headphones to listen in on the conversation as did Loker and Spencer.
Casey had heard the woman, Fana, talking in a different language. "What language is she speaking?" She asked Spencer. "She's speaking Yoruba. It's a western Nigerian dialect. She's talking to her mother." Spencer answered.
Casey listened to the language and looked over at Spencer, who she knew had every single word and translation in his head from the conversation.
Suddenly, another voice picked up. Casey could only assume it was Roman Azarof speaking. "What the hell? Why you have the curtains open?"
"So I could clean the windows." Fana answered. "But what did we told you? Keep the damn curtains closed. How hard is it to remember?" Roman questioned.
"It won't happen again. I have to go and switch the laundry." Fana told and her voice disappeared, only leaving Taras and Roman in the room.
"She's an idiot." Roman spoke with disgust in his voice. "Hey, I just got a text from Dyadya." Taras spoke next. "He says he'll need us soon. We should be ready with a truck. I gonna go down to the office."
Casey heard the front door open and close, indicating that Taras left the house. She puts the headphones down to take a sip of her coffee. "You speak Yoruba?" Loker turns over to Spencer. The man shrugs as he also takes a sip of his coffee. "I can get by." He tells.
Loker turns to Casey next. "Told you," Casey shrugged. "Fifty languages... at most"
"This is really good coffee, by the way." Spencer tells Loker and Casey nods in agreement. "Heaven in a cup." She nods. "Coffee's a language in itself." Spencer says.
"And who said that? Dickens?" Casey questions.
"Jackie Chan." Spencer said, causing Casey to smile a bit and to hide her smile behind her mug as she took another swig of coffee.
━━━━━━
About an hour had passed, Spencer had been drawing the suspects' faces and taping them up on the wall as Casey had been studying up on her Russian and reading. Spencer's phone suddenly began to ring and he answered it: "Hey, Garcia, what do you have?" He asked, putting her on speaker so both him and Casey could hear the conversation.
"Taras Yudin is a very horrible meanie." Garcia began. "So are all the other guys we go after. What did he do?" Casey questioned.
"In 2012, he was questioned in the brutal killing of a gang member's family in his hometown of Volga, but then there wasn't enough evidence, so the charges were dropped, and he left Russia." Garcia explained.
"Is there anyone else from his hometown in DC?" Spencer questioned. "Someone must have helped him when he first arrived here. It could be Dyadya."
"Oh, it's hard to tell with all the disposable cell phones he uses, but keep looking will I." Garcia tells. "All right, thank you so much, Garcia. Bye." Spencer hangs up the phone.
"Something's going on." Loker informs the two and Casey grabs her headphones and listens in as does Loker. Casey holds the headphones over to Spencer so that he can get in on this too.
"Dyadya told you he'd get two million ransom?" That was Roman's voice. "Yeah." Taras told. "That's not what I heard at the club. I heard Dyadya's getting 20 million. 20 million. That's a lot of money. Son of a bitch has been lying to you. And what was he gonna give us, a measly 5 grand?"
"I don't believe it." Taras told.
"You don't believe it, talk to Ivan." said Roman.
"Who's Ivan?" Spencer asked, turning towards Loker and taking the words right out of Casey's mouth. "A bartender at the local strip club. We have a source down there."
Casey had taken her phone out of her pocket and decided to call Hotch and inform him of their new information. "Hotch, hey, the ransom changed. It used to be two million." She informed.
After discovering that Sophie Troy's ear was chopped off, the team realized they had to act more quickly now. Especially since they didn't have a lot of time left before she would die.
Taras and Roman were home and the front door had opened. Casey looked towards Spencer once they heard speaking once more. "Ah, where the hell have you been?" Roman asked, followed by a door closing.
"I went to the store," Fana told. "You needed more detergent."
"Well, you better start cleaning more." Roman said.
"I've been doing it." Fana spoke with a scared tone in her voice. Something told Casey that that wasn't the first time she was spoken to like that. "This place is a pigsty. What are we paying you for?"
"You smell like something. What is it?" Roman questioned.
"Bleach probably."
"No, no, it's more like perfumy. It's like the woods or flowers or something."
"Please--"
"But is good. I like. Come, come and dance with me.
"Stop it, please!"
Casey began to hear a struggle between the two and both Spencer and Casey both couldn't handle hearing it anymore as Roman continues to speak to Fana in a sinister and abusive way.
"I don't think I can take much more of this. There has to be something we can do." Casey told, looking at Loker. "We can't." Loker shook her head. "He's beating her up!" Spencer stated.
"You bust in there, you blow the entire case. Yours and mine. Think of the big picture. You want to kill Sophie Troy, or thousands of people if the missile shipment gets out?" Loker questioned and Casey sighed, she didn't like it but she looked towards Spencer and said: "She's right. But if this escalates any further, I am stepping in." Casey told, listening as the door opened as Taras's voice was heard nexts
"What's going on?" He asked and the signs of struggle weren't heard anymore. "Nothing," Roman told. "She was getting smart with me, but, uh, she learned her lesson. Go." Casey assumed he was talking to Fana. "Go! Clean yourself up."
"Well?" Roman was talking to Taras now. "You're right. Dyadya's getting 20 million." Spencer and Casey look at one another.
━━━━━━
Another hour had passed and they were running out of time. Casey and Spencer switched positions and Spencer sat down as Casey stood near the window and they listened in to the following conversation they were now overhearing between Roman and someone on the phone.
Casey looked down at the moving figments behind the curtains as she listened in. "Hello. No, he can't talk right now. He's in the bathroom. Who's this? Ah, you're Dyadya." Casey turned over to Spencer as the name was spoken. "No, I didn't know. Uh-huh. Yeah. I'll tell him."
Casey assumes Taras had walked into the room next. "Dyadya just called." Roman informed. "Oh, yeah? What did he say?" Taras asked. "He said he left two messages. Wants to know why you haven't called him back yet." Roman told. "I didn't get them." Taras answered fairly quickly. "Or maybe you did and just didn't tell me?" Roman assumes.
"Seriously? Come on, now, you drunk. Roman, it's me." Taras tries to convince Roman and luckily it works. There was something Taras was hiding from Roman from what Casey could gather. "He wants us to meet him in an hour with a truck. We're supposed to bring ski masks."
They're beginning to get ready to go and Casey hears a closet door open up and a woman whimper. Fana. "What the hell? Are you spying on us? Why are you hiding in the closet?" Roman questions the scared woman.
"This isn't good." Spencer comments. "Not at all." Casey adds, looking down at the building.
"How long you been in there, huh? What did you hear?" Roman antagonizes Fana. "Nothing, I swear." Fana told. "Who do you work for?" Roman questions.
"I think they're just messing with her. They won't hurt her." Loker assures but Spencer replies with a worried tone, "We don't know that." Casey turns towards Loker. "They won't stop at nothing. Even if Fana gets in the way. They'll kill her if they have to." Casey told.
Spencer's cell begins to ring and he picks up: "Rossi, hold on." He told. "Can't," Rossi started. "Clock's ticking and you and Casey got our best lead on the kidnappers."
"There's no one." Fana cries. "You're a lying bitch. It's the damn feds, isn't it?" Roman questions. "She has to die." Taras says. The three hear a gun click and that's enough for Spencer to start booking towards the door.
Casey immediately notices once he stands up. "Spence! Spencer!" She shouts, running after him. Him going in there could blow the case. Loker follows behind Spencer and Casey and they've made it to the front door until a gunshot is fired.
Before Spencer could go to open the door, Casey grabs him by his wrist. "Wait! Stop. Listen." The three listen over the conversation. Surprisingly, Fana's voice is heard. "Is he dead?" She asks. "Yeah." Taras answers and Casey is confused.
"Reid, Casey, what's going on?" Rossi questions Spencer over his cell in a concerned voice. "It's more complicated than we thought." Spencer answers. "You guys go in there and arrest those guys right now." Rossi practically orders.
"Yeah, Rossi, that's a little difficult right now with Roman being dead. Just wait a minute." Casey told.
"I should have killed him sooner, sweetheart." Taras told, causing Spencer and Casey to slowly turn their heads to one another at this new information.
"Are they...?" Spencer starts in a whisper.
"Together?" Casey finishes.
"Yeah, I think so." Loker added as the three still listened in on the conversation.
"Get your things. We're leaving." Taras tells Fana. "What about Dyadya?" Fana asks. "His contact is pissed that he asked for more ransom, but she'll pay if the wife is dead." Casey's ears perk up at the word 'she'.
"She?" Casey questions.
"We're supposed to pick up the body and dump it. But listen to me. We don't have to do any of this. We can take the money, or we can run away." Taras tells Fana and Spencer goes back to speaking Spencer. "Rossi, the unsub's a woman. I don't think we should arrest anyone yet. They're leaving now. They might lead us to Sophie."
In the end, the team had luckily saved Sophie Troy and that Congressman Ben's mother had been this unsub. Vivian and Hotch had taken over with interrogating Ben's mother and she had given in and released the location to the BAU. Vivian, Rossi, Kate and Hotch stayed behind while the rest of the team had gone to save Sophie Troy.
After that, Spencer and Casey had gone to help Loker clean up everything after the case as a token of gratitude for helping them out. "That should do it." Loker told, wrapping up the last headphone. "Hey, thanks for coming back to clean up. You guys didn't have to." She said.
"No worries." Spencer replied. "We wanted to help." Casey smiled. "I, um, I wanted to apologize for almost rushing in there to save the wrong girl, as it turns out." Spencer told as Loker looked down as she continues to clean, "You could have been right. One of the hardest things about surveillance is not taking action. You listen, you analyze, and then you force yourself to do nothing." Casey couldn't imagine doing this job 24 hours a day. She liked taking action, she would hate sitting at a desk every single day which was ironic because when she wasn't out solving cases with the team, most days were paperwork days.
"I imagine that's really hard." Spencer says. "Oh, and sorry also about ruining Great Expectations for you." He also apologized. "I'm aware I have a sort of knack for that." He said, looking towards Casey subtly as Casey rolled her eyes at Spencer jokingly.
"You just saved me about 20 hours. Maybe you can summarize Bleak House for me, too." Loker pauses cleaning for a second and then looks Spencer in the eyes. "Может быть, мы сможем как-нибудь обсудить это за чашечкой кофе?" Maybe we can discuss it over coffee sometime?
Before Spencer even had a chance to reject her - with also it coming as a shock to him that she was asking him out - someone else interrupted the conversation.
"Он говорит за." Casey stated and Spencer looked at her at an almost shock once he realized what she said in Russian. He's spoken for.
Loker's eyes widen as Casey makes her way over to Spencer and wraps an arm around his arm and makes sure to flash her engagement ring not-so-subtly. "And this just got awkward." Loker comments. "I am so sorry—"
Casey shakes her head, "It's fine." Casey knew she had a hot boyfriend. Flirting never really got to her because she knew Spencer would never let anyone else touch him besides Casey. The woman excuses herself and apologizes numerous times before doing so, leaving Spencer and Casey alone in the room.
Spencer turns to his fiancée with a confused look on his face. "I thought you said—?"
"I may have audited a class or two on Russian 101 back in college." Casey tells, causing Spencer to smirk. "You surprise me almost every day." He admits. "It's what I do." Casey shrugs.
Afterwards, the two headed on home, promising Hotch that they would do their paperwork when they got into the office the next morning but Hotch assured that they didn't need to come in for a couple of days so they could get their rest. Casey had called Kate, telling her that they would be picking Christopher up but Kate had assured to them that she could take him for one more night.
Once they arrived back at the apartment, Spencer asks: "You think Chris and Kate are gonna regret taking Christopher for the night?" He asks. "Yes, but they said they wanted the baby practice to get ready. Apparently, they've become rusty since Meg has gotten older. This is kind of on them. But, hey, free time for us." Casey told and moved closer to Spencer.
Spencer pulled Casey in for a kiss, cupping her face. Casey's hands made her way to his hair and tugged slightly on his chocolate locks. The kiss deepened with more passion and Casey had pulled away to take a breath and examined his beautiful features. "You know, you should get the boyband hairdo often, you get hotter every single time. Not that you already aren't hot, you just get more hot."
"Ты самая красивая девушка, на которую я когда-либо смотрел." Spencer spoke breathily in Russian as he began to kiss at Casey's neck. You're the most beautiful girl I've ever laid eyes on.
"Oh, I have no idea what you just said but please keep speaking Russian to me." Casey practically begged as they Spencer began to lead Casey back to their bedroom slowly since Casey was walking backwards to the woman and the fact that they were so enraptured in one another.
"Я люблю тебя." Spencer spoke. I love you.
Casey pulled away for a second. "Now, that one I got." She said. "Я тоже тебя люблю." She said back in Russian. I love you too.
"Maybe you should be the one speaking Russian." Spencer comments and picks Casey up bridal style and rushes towards their bed as Casey laughs and shrieks at the way she picked her up and threw her on the bed. The two giggled as they shared another passion moment of heat.
