CHAPTER FIFTY-SIX: LOCKDOWN/LOCKOUT !

10x16

━━━━━━

THE TEAM HAD RECEIVED NEWS THAT THEIR CASE INVOLVED A PRISON. And now, here they were on the jet, ready to go to a prison. It wasn't the first time the team was at a facility to do their FBI work. They were now debriefing over the case.

"Officers Keith Rivers and Rudy Hightower, both career prison guards, both married, kids, nothing out of the ordinary." Kate told as Casey went ahead to look at the crime scene photos.

"The uniform itself could be the target. Kill a guard, any guard, it doesn't matter which one." Morgan told. "And what about the sock in the mouth? That's a new one." Casey asked. "It might be some kind of warning to keep quiet, you know, like, put a sock in it." Rossi tells, making Casey shrug at the possibility. "It could have also just been a gag to literally keep the victims quiet." JJ added.

"Well, either way, we're probably looking at multiple unsubs." Hotch told. "This would be very difficult to pull off alone." Kate looks up. "Multiple unsubs in a prison, sounds like a gang."
"And gangs have gang leaders and the murders could lead back to one of them, and by them, I mean him." JJ holds up a mugshot photo of a well-known gang leader in the joint.

"Julio Watson, founder of the Southside Crip Nation." Morgan tells. "He transferred in a month before the murders started." JJ tells. "Maybe if it's a coincidence." Vivian shrugs as Garcia comes up on the monitor.

"Excuse me, sir. Even I am befuddled. I found almost nothing on this prison, but this is what I do know. The Reagan Federal Penitentiary was opened in 1969 just outside of Liberty, Texas. Oh, the irony, I know. And then it was scheduled to be shut down, but Citadel Corrections Company bought it a year ago from Uncle Sam." Garcia explained.

"The business of incarceration is extremely lucrative and virtually recession-proof. The Citadel Corrections Company has more than quadrupled their holdings since they were founded 20 years ago. They now have 19 facilities all across the country. 59,603 prisoners in their charge." Spencer explained.

"Guess I had it wrong all this time," Rossi started. "Crime does pay."

Once they landed, the team immediately got into SUVs and into the prison. Casey swears the last time she was at a prison that wasn't her dad's was the time her, Spencer and Hotch had gone to talk to a serial killer who nearly killed Casey. She was actually finishing the story to Kate when the topic had come up.

Once they arrived, they were almost immediately met with the warden. "Agent Hotchner, it's good to see you, sir." The man greeted, holding a hand out and an officer had stood next to him. "Thank you again for coming all this way."

"Hopefully we can help, Warden." Hotch shook the man's hand and then looked over at Rossi. "Oh, Agent Rossi, hey, it's great to meet you." Rossi nods, "Likewise, Warden."

"This is our team. This is Agent Callahan, Agent Hudson, Agent Jareau, Dr. Reid, Agent Willows and Agent Morgan." Hotch introduced.

The warden looks over at the officer next to her. "This is Captain Shavers, head of security. He can help you with anything you need." He tells. "Call me Dale, please. And welcome," The man nods. "It's good to have you all here. Right this way."

The team enters the prison and walk in where they know they have to put their weapons into lockers. Casey and Spencer had taken this opportunity to share a locker to put their things in.

"Obviously we had to move officer Rivers' body, but per your request, we left everything else as is." The officer looks towards the guard standing there, another officer, who thanks the team for coming. "Polinsky, I want those sign-up forms logged in before the next shift. Make sure we get them visitor badges."

The bars close behind Shavers. "If you don't mind, I got a few things I need to tend to, but I'll catch up with you ASAP."

As they walk through the building, the warden begins to speak with the team about the rules within the prison, even if they were the authorities, they guessed it was just protocol. "I'm sorry there's no cell signal inside the walls. We had to jam it."

"You got inmates smuggling phones in?" Morgan questioned. "Yeah, it's been a problem, one of many." The warden tells. "What about Wi-Fi?" JJ asks. "We got you set up as close to the router as possible, but it's still glitchy. It drives me nuts. Back when I worked on the Hill, I couldn't survive without my phone." The man explained.

"I got a teenager at home who knows exactly how you feel." Kate comments.

The warden chuckles, "Well, we have got a good old-fashioned land line and a fax machine for you, though."

"I thought I was the only one that still used those." Rossi comments.

"And there actually is a pretty decent signal outside, so you're not completely cut off. We'll provide all your meals. Food's not much to speak of, especially breakfast, so you may want to grab something over by your hotel and bring it in."

Hotch had split the team off into groups. Kate, Morgan, Casey and Vivian were all split into one big group, Vivian talking to the other officers as Kate, Morgan and Casey looked over the crime scene. Dale Shavers tagged along with them.

"I bet all the inmates know exactly what areas are covered by surveillance." Morgan commented, looking at the cameras in the building. "That they do." Dale said.

"The lock's not picked, so they either stole a key from a guard or took one off the victim." Kate said as Casey walked in and knelt down. "But how did they get him all the way back here?" Casey questioned. "They either waited or lured him here somehow." Kate tells.

"And look at this shelf," Morgan says. "It's pretty high. It had to take at least two attackers to get him up here." Kate looks over at Shavers. "What's the deal with the shoddy surveillance? I mean, this is a big hallway. No cameras?" She asks.

"Ask our corporate office," Shavers said. "Maybe you'll have better luck than I did." Casey furrowed her brows. "What do you mean by that?" She asks. The man hesitated, as if he wasn't going to respond to Casey's question and Morgan replied, "It's okay. You can level with us." He assured.

Shavers started in, "I requested cameras, dozens of times, but I got shot down because upgrades cost money. You want me to level with you, okay. These CCC college boys have their heads up their asses. The warden's a fair enough man, but he's one of them. Twenty years I've been here. They don't care about us or this place. The only thing they care about is the bottom line, and my guys are dying because of it." The man explained, his words sounding like bile.

His radio had gone off. "Captain, de-seg supervisors are ready for you in the main office." The man answered the radio, "Copy that, I'll be right up." He looked back at the group. "Can you all find your way back?" He questioned.
"Yeah. We're good." Morgan told.

As Shavers left, Vivian came over to Morgan, Kate and Casey. "Talked to all of the officers. None of them could give me a full statement about the cameras. And the way they talk about the prisoners here..." Vivian shook her head as she spoke. "Yeah, we found some stuff about the cameras, too." Casey nods.

"You know, guys, there's one other possibility we need to consider." Morgan spoke. "What's that?" Casey asked. "What if a guard is actually involved?" The four looked towards the guards, who were very occupied in their own conversations.

"It just means we've got to be careful who we can trust." Kate adds. All Casey knew was that they better not have gone through what they went through in Texas with a double-team. Casey stared down the guards and to be very honest, Dale Shavers was her number one suspect.

The team had gone into their conference room after Morgan and Rossi had spoken to Julio Watson. They had come back to debrief the conversation. Spencer was going through files of inmates since he could read fast and Casey had tried to help him, even though she wasn't quick like him. "There's a couple more guys that we should talk to. So far no one knows anything, but if they do, they're just not talking." Morgan suggested to Hotch.

"Maybe this has nothing to do with gang-related activity." Hotch says. "I don't think it does either," Vivian says. "The one thing they all have in common is no love for Hightower or Rivers. There's a chance that this is personal revenge." Vivian explained. "Maybe someone had beef with those two." Morgan nods.

Casey looked over as Hotch looked towards a studious Reid, who stuck his tongue out in concentration as he read through a few more files. "We need to complete our profiles. The answer's in there. How much time do you need?" Hotch asked.

"Uh..." Spencer looked at the files. "126 minutes, approximately." He answers, surely. "Well, hurry." Hotch pressured.

"We should go help finish those interviews." Morgan suggested. "You four will be stationed in the same cell block. It'll go faster this way." Hotch told. "I'll join you in a minute, but first I'm gonna go outside and check in with Garcia."

Casey grabbed Spencer's hand and squeezed it before she left with Morgan, Vivian and Kate. Once they left the room, Vivian spoke to Casey. "You're not at all worried about him in there? Sounds like Hotch was really gunning in on him." Vivian tells.

Casey shook her head, "No, apparently, he does his best work under intense pressure. Hotch knows." Vivian nods her head in understanding. "Why, you afraid my fiancé's gonna mop the floor with your boyfriend?" She teases.

Vivian rolls her eyes. "He's not my boyfriend." She denies. "Well, from our end, you are definitely lying, missy." Kate comments, pointing a menacing finger at the woman. "How am I lying?" Vivian questioned.

"Trust me, it's better you not lie to us and just be honest. Keeping your relationship secret from your co-workers that are also profilers does not work. I've been there." Casey explained.

Vivian looked at the three people and they all have pointed looks at her and Vivian swatted her hands in surrender. "Okay, fine! You caught me. It's been going on a few weeks now. But you better not say anything to anyone else. We are... keeping it on the down-low." Vivian told as Casey, Kate and Morgan smirked.

"Ha-ha!" Casey cheers. "$20, Callahan. Cough it up." She says, flapping her fingers towards herself as Kate hesitantly pulls the money out of her wallet to give to Casey.

"You bet on us?" Vivian questioned, shockingly. "We bet that you'd be the one to give in and tell us. These two thought you guys wouldn't say anything." Casey told, stuffing the money in her wallet and pocket. "Oh, don't bring me into this, Ace!" Morgan told. "This was a bet between you and Callahan."

"For what it's worth, we're happy for you." Kate told. "Thank you." Vivian nods, finally content she told somebody the secret.

So, the four had gotten through an hour full of interviews and throughout the night, another man was murdered. He had seven broken fingers and socks were stuffed in his mouth. This time, evidence of sexual assault. He was a serial rapist serving his 10th year on a 20 year sentence. He was privileged level in the prison for giving information to the officers. This was probably why the unsub killed him.

The team had gone back to see what they maybe had missed. Hotch and Vivian had come back after checking out the footage of the last murder. "Can't see anything on the surveillance footage." Hotch told. "They cut the lights in the hallway and the cameras don't have IR." Vivian followed.

"How'd they get access to the power?" JJ asked. "Same way they got into that closet," Kate told. "One of the guards is definitely in on this."

"Maybe not willingly. There have been cases where inmates have manipulated prison staff with threats." Hotch told.

Spencer spoke up next, "Guys, I've been looking for connections between our victims, and I think I may have found something. Before our dead convict, Randall Jefferson Jones, achieved privileged status, he just happened to be cellmates with Devon White."

Casey recognized the name as the same one Spencer found just yesterday. He apparently just vanished one day in the prison. "Devon White... didn't you find that name yesterday? Why does it keep cropping up?" She asked.

"I thought the same thing, so I kept searching, which oddly enough led me back to Hightower and Rivers. They filed more disciplinary write-ups than any other guards in the entire prison, and guess who got a lot of them."
       "Devon White." Kate responded.
"Yeah, but for relatively minor infractions-- improperly made bed, non-regulation clothing. They once put him in solitary confinement for hiding candy bars under his bed."

Casey furrowed her brows. "What the hell?"
"I wonder why they rode him so hard." JJ comments.

"Here's the strange thing, though. He has no history of physical violence in his past, yet he made frequent visits to the infirmary for injuries related to fighting." Spencer explained, causing Casey to think. How did someone that was nonviolent come in here and all of a sudden shows up to the infirmary for injuries? On top of that, how come he disappeared out of nowhere?

"Do we have medical files here?" Hotch asked. "No, we need to check the infirmary." Spencer tells.

With that, JJ and Rossi headed to the infirmary and discovered Devon White was definitely in the hospital wing quite a bit. After that, the team continued their interviews with the inmates.

They had then received an urgent radio call from Shavers, saying that an inmate was dead. The warden, Hotch, Casey and Rossi all head down to the cell block where they spot the dead man on the floor and Shavers standing above his body with a bloody wound on his forehead.

"Oh, my--what happened?" The warden questioned. "Son of a bitch went berserk," Shavers said through gritted teeth. "Damn near bit my nose off. I bopped him pretty good, but I guess he must have caught his head on the door or something when he went down. Oh..." Shavers said, holding onto his wound.

If he wasn't #1 suspect before, he definitely was now. Casey thought in her head. Shavers looks towards a box as Spencer kneels down to get a better look at the body. "We, uh, found all that hidden in his cell. Oh, damn it

"Go get that cut taken care of." The warden tells. "No, I'm good, sir. I'd like to stay and help." Shavers offers. "Shavers, you've done enough. Go." The warden says, not taking no for an answer. "Captain, I'll meet you in the infirmary. I have a few questions." Hotch tells. "All right. This won't take long. I'll come find you." Shavers tells.

"His name is Patrick Butler, inmate number 312773." Spencer tells. "Found the same socks, same shanks. This must be our guy." The warden tells. "Well, warden, we profiled this was the work of a group. If Butler was involved, we've only found one of the killers." Hotch says, making the warden sigh exasperatedly. "Well, I'm gonna go share the news with corporate. They'll be happy we're making progress."

Once the warden leaves, Casey looks at her fiancé. "Was Butler a violent criminal?" She asks. "Not until he came here," Spencer answers. "He was doing 5 years for using a toy gun to rob five banks in three different states, but his sentence got bumped up to twenty after he killed another inmate."

"Just like Devon White. Comes in nonviolent and then something goes wrong." Rossi told as Spencer looked up at the cell and his brow furrowed and jaw dropped. "Spence, what is it?" Casey asks.

"Guys, look at the cell number." Casey draws her attention to the number '34' above the cell. "Maybe it's not 7 fingers, maybe it's 3 on one hand, 4 on the other. Thirty-four."

"Well, I wonder what else must have happened down here." Rossi comments as Casey kneels down to look at the body. "And Shavers is definitely hiding something from us." She added.

The team had gone back and discussed what they had found. "You really think this Butler guy did it?" Vivian asked. "It's possible. And our profile may have led Shavers right to it." Hotch tells.

"But if this is about foul play, why would Shavers want him dead?" Morgan questioned. "He may have known too much about something the captain's trying to hide." Spencer tells. "You think the warden knows about all this?" Kate asks. "I don't think so. I think he's just trying to save his job." Hotch figured.

"So what's our next move, boss?" Casey asks.

"We proceed as planned," Hotch tells. "We keep conducting interviews until we find out what happened to Devon White, and then we figure out if Butler or Shavers had anything to do with it."

Casey nods, heading off with Morgan, Vivian and Kate, ready to conduct their next few interviews in the A-block.

━━━━━━

Casey and Vivian had been on their last interview. Their last few interviews were with men who obviously hadn't seen women in ages, staring up and down Vivian's and Casey's chests — reminding them that their eyes were on their head. This last interview was an easy one, a man who was showing respect to the women, all the while keeping things secret from the two. He knew something they didn't, definitely.

After a few more questions, the man took notice of the ring on Casey's ring finger. "You married?" He asks and Casey looks down at the engagement ring on her hand. "Engaged." She corrects.

"Congratulations." He nods to Casey. "Thank you." She then takes notice of the tan-line on his ring finger, meaning he had a ring on, just not anymore. "You married, too?" She asks, pointing to his hand. He looks down at his hand and smiles proudly. "Sure am."

"She come and visit you often, Cisco?" Vivian asks, interested in their conversation as well. "Would you visit your husband if he was convicted of murder?" Casey looks down, knowing she could never worry about the thought but it still stuck. She knew that if she was — wrongfully committed — she'd like to think Spencer would be there every step of the way.

After the interview, the women decided to go and find Morgan and Kate since they may have already been finished with their interviews so they could all go back to the conference room together. They figured they were lost but kept going anyways. They'd figure their way out eventually. They were walking down the hall, when they noticed dark figures in the shadows. Vivian stopped Casey from continuing the walk.

The women noticed a man, an inmate emerging from the shadows. After that inmate was another one and then another one and soon enough, Casey and Vivian noticed about twelve inmates in the hall.

Realizing their phones had service and that they had no weapons, they knew they ultimately screwed. "Uh, Vivian?" Casey asks in an anxious tone. "Yeah?" Vivian mimicked the same tone.
"What do we do?" Casey questions, her voice going eight octaves higher. "I say..." Vivian and Casey both begin to back up as the men come closer. Vivian grabs Casey's arm. "We go find Morgan and Kate and band together."
Casey nods frantically, "That sounds like a good idea."

With that, the women begin to run in the opposite direction. Casey and Vivian eventually found Morgan and Kate and so did the inmates that were chasing after them. These men were killers, rapists, they've done the most dangerous shit and all Casey could think of was how her life was now at the palm of their hands. She was sure she was gonna die today.

Two of the men immediately grabbed Casey and Vivian, but they were gonna go down without a fight. Morgan and Kate had the same idea, fighting as best as they could at the inmates. With them, had been Officer Polinsky, who they were currently questioning before this mess happened. Officer Polinsky was stabbed and that's when it started going downhill. They were winning their fights at first but considering it was about fifteen inmates and they were going up against four agents, their fighting started to slip through.

Vivian had gotten her guy in a headlock but was soon hit across the head by another one and he held a knife to her as he pulled her up. Kate had the same situation and realized she couldn't fight back, Casey had pinned up against a wall and was warned that if she moved, she'd die and Morgan the only one still putting up a fight. Every time he'd get hit, Casey would try and yell for them to stop but they'd tell her to shut up.

Morgan had two guys on him now, a knife was now held to his neck. "Okay!" Morgan surrendered. It all seemed as if they were all in the same position now, knives being held to their necks. Casey didn't even want to move. She was surrounded by these inmates who have really done some bad shit. Her heart dropped to her stomach. She couldn't die. Not like this.

Meanwhile, Rossi and Hotch had been in the middle of questioning an inmate when the warden walked in. "Excuse me, agents. A personal body alarm was activated in A-block, but we can't seem to get access." He told.

"A-block," Rossi looked at Hotch. "That's where Morgan and Kate are." Hotch then thought about what he told Casey, Vivian, Kate and Morgan. They were to all stay together. His heart dropped to his stomach once he said: "And so are Casey and Vivian." With that, the two men excused themselves and left because the only thing that had been important to them now had been their agents.

Hotch thought to himself as he walked down the hall with Rossi. If something happens to them, I will never forgive myself. He thought. Morgan, Kate, Vivian and Casey. He couldn't believe it, but he knew they could hold their own. He just had to believe it. He couldn't even imagine how Spencer was feeling, knowing his fiancée was in there and sure enough, Spencer had frantically run down the hall to tell Hotch what he'd already found out. Both of them had the love of their life in that block. They both would've never forgiven themselves if something happened.

They were making their way to the main block, all of them taking the agents with them. The doors were all locked. Casey had tried to keep her cool and then noticed a guard getting to close to Kate and smelling her hair. "You smell good." He said sinisterly and Kate had headbutt him.

"You get that bitch under control!" One of the other inmates grabbed Kate, causing Casey to yell and struggle: "Don't touch her!" Vivian had kicked the guy who was holding her in the nads and Casey managed to get out of the inmate's grasp and kicked him with her free legs.

"These bitches crazy!" One of the inmates commented.

"Just let the women go, man. It's me you want." Morgan tried, knowing that them all fighting with the inmates was useless at this point.

"Oh, I like them." The man Kate head butted growled, making his way to each women, who could only roll their eyes at him. The inmates then led the four over to their cafeteria area and threw Morgan in the ground.

"Gather 'round!" One of the inmates yelled. "I want everyone to see this."

        "Don't hurt him!" Casey yelled.

One of the inmates grabbed Officer Polinsky's baton. "Give me that." He told.

"Hey, I want to have some fun with these girlies first." The man told and then darted towards Kate. "Especially this one." The inmate holding Casey spoke up next, "As long as I get some fun with this one." Casey rolled her eyes, "In your dreams." She muttered and the knife dug into a neck a bit deeper. "What did you say?"

"Leave her alone!" Morgan yelled. "Leave them all alone!"

"Morgan, Morgan!" Casey began to panic as two inmates began to take her and Kate out of the room. "No, don't! Take me! Just take me!" Vivian yelled. Before Vivian and Morgan could scream at them to stop what they were doing, a few other inmates had come to their rescue, one if them being Julio Watson.

"Weeks!" Julio yelled, coming in with his gang. "What the hell you doin', man?"
       "Mind your business!"
       "I'm makin' it my business."
"This ain't your show. Now, go on, get out of here!"

Morgan stood up as this continued. "This ain't got nothin' to do with you, Watson." Julio looked towards the men. "The hell it don't. This is Feds, you idiots. Anything happens to them, we all end up on death row."

"Listen to him, man, he's right." Morgan agreed. "Shut up!" Weeks yelled. "If something to happens to any of us, you're dead either way." Casey spat. "Nothing good can come from hurting us. If you let us go, it can help some of you." Morgan told.

"We know about Shavers." Kate told. "We know what he's capable of. We have enough to bring this whole place down. His whole crew along with it." Vivian added on. Back and forth banter kept on going.

"Stay out of this, Watson." Weeks shouted. "It's too late. I'm already in." Julio told and Casey noticed Polinsky stumbling in.  "Somebody, please..." He landed on the ground with a thud. "He needs help." Kate told.

"Oh, I got his help." One of the men grabbed Polinsky. "Let him go! Let go of him!" He began to kick the crap out of him but suddenly, gunfire was shot and the man landed on the ground next to Polinsky. Everyone got down on the ground as officers came in and Casey and Kate rushed over to Polinsky.

"Get medics in here! He's still alive!" Kate yelled as everyone else came rushing in. Rossi had untied Morgan and Vivian out of their zip ties they were tied with.

As soon as they were out of them, Vivian rubbed her wrists and almost hesitated before rushing over to Hotch and holding onto him for dear life. Hotch held onto her, wrapping his arms around her body to secure her. "Are you okay?" He asks and Vivian nods, "It was about damn time you guys showed up."

Spencer and JJ had immediately rushed over to both Kate and Casey and as soon as Casey had gotten out of her binds, she turned around and wrapped her arms around Spencer's neck, holding onto her and he held securely onto her. "You're okay?" He questioned repeatedly. Casey nods, cupping his face with her hands. "Yes, yes, I'm okay. I'm okay." She assured, their foreheads touching each other's as she sighed in relief. Now that Spencer had Casey in his arms, he held onto her like he was never gonna let go of her.

Casey then pulled away and turned to Kate next to her as the medics finally came over to take care of Polinsky. Casey and Kate had joined each other in a tight hug once they stood up. Casey pulled away and then looked at Kate, "I told you what happens when you get paired up with Morgan on cases." She joked, Kate slightly chuckling to lighten the mood.

━━━━━━

Casey had decided to take a couple of days off of work to spend time with Christopher. After this case, she never wanted to go to a prison again. Turns out, she'd been right about Shavers. Devon White's body had been found in the incinerator after a fight gone wrong and staged by Shavers and his crew. Spencer had decided to take a few days off as well and Casey didn't even mind.

The woman watched as her son happily played with his toys on the ground, smiling at his momma. Casey smiled back at him. She was reading a book but soon got distracted by her son. His hair was growing in, soft brown ringlets. Curly hair ran on both sides of the family but he seemed to resemble Spencer more.

Spencer had seated himself next to Casey and got her a cup of hot cocoa with six marshmallows and handed it to her. He placed an arm around her. "You feeling okay?" He asked. "Yeah, I'm okay. Just tired." Casey nods, placing her head on Spencer's shoulder.

The two were quiet and Spencer knew he had to reassure her. "I just want you to know that... when you're ready to talk about it, we can talk about it." Spencer told and Casey looks at her son and then down at her cocoa. "I don't think I want to. I mean, it was just a case—" Spencer shook his head. "It wasn't just a case, Casey. You, Vivian, Kate and Morgan could've died." Spencer practically reminded Casey, as if she hadn't spent the last few days thinking about what would've happened, what could've been done different.

"That's why I don't wanna talk about it." Casey said softly and looked at Spencer. "When I'm ready to talk about it, I will talk to you about it. Trust me. I will. But as of right now, I'm just not ready." Casey told. "And I won't push. I'll be here when you're ready." Spencer told, kissing her temple as he laid his head on hers.

Suddenly, Casey cell buzzed and she checked to see who it was. She immediately stood up. "I have to take this." Casey told as she stood up, going towards the kitchen as Spencer took this time to play with his son. "Hello?" Casey asked as soon as she answered.

"This is a prepaid call fromJames Willows — an inmate at Roanoke River Correctional Facility. All phone calls are subject to monitoring and recording. To accept this call, press 1." Casey pressed the number. "Go ahead with your call."

"Hey, Dad." Casey greeted and she looked over at Spencer and Christopher. "I'm actually really glad you called. I, uh, I wanted to hear your voice." This prison case had opened Casey's eyes a bit. At how prisoners were treated by guards and police, it made her feel sorry for her dad. Even if inmates did some horrible stuff, they were still human beings. Ones that weren't psychopaths anyways. Especially her dad. He had an addiction. He was really trying with Casey here. Which is why he'd call her at least once a month around this time. And this time, she began to actually cherish the calls. "I miss you."
