Chapitre Trois: Le Papillon

Evaelle's day was relatively queit after first period. She had Chloé in every hour but English II, but she never bothered to tease Eva in any of the other classes. She seemed to enjoy ridiculing all of the students- something that made Evaelle's blood curdle. What made this Chloé girl so special, anyways?

Eventually, she learned through listening in throughout the day that Chloé was extremely rich, and that she was the daughter of the mayor of Paris. That made Eva scowl to herself. The perfect recipe to get away with anything- a parent with power and troves of money.

Evaelle's day got a little better when she went home during the lunch period. The moving truck was gone, so everything was in the new apartment, but her parents were only about half-way through unpacking the boxes. Luckily, the bathroom supplies were unpacked and she was able to to wash her face, brush her teeth, and get some lotion on her skin. That made her feel a lot more comfortable, despite the fact that she still wasn't able to do her hair or change her clothes. She grabbed a bag of chips that had been in the car during the trip to Paris and ate them on the way to school. Feeling a little fresher now, Eva felt a bit of weight lift off her shoulders.

History and geometry were also rather uneventful; particularly geometry, given she had already learned the current unit her new teacher was on back in Brussels. She only had to make it through one more hour. Then, she could go home and sleep for the rest of her existence- or, at least until the next morning.

"Today, we will be starting a new unit." The gym instructor, Monsieur D'argencourt, began in a surprisingly thick accent. Evaelle had pretty much gotten used to the others' accents at this point in the day, but this teacher's was so thick that each word was almost unrecognizable. "While I much rather begin the fencing unit, Monsieur Damocles insisted that fencing be restricted to club activity, so we're skipping it and going straight into ping pong, tennis, and racket-ball." The P.E. teacher explained bitterly. "I will explain the basic rules to you, but after that, you're on your own. Then, Wednesday of next week, the class will pick a sport, and you'll form teams of two and compete in a tournament, so I suggest you get a feel for each sport, just incase the one to your liking isn't picked by the majority."

After he finished, he took the class outside to the tennis courts and explained the basic rules and how to serve. Then, he repeated the pattern indoors with racket-ball and ping pong, before releasing the students to their own devices. Evaelle picked up a ping pong paddle hesitantly, running her fingers over the rough surface. This one seemed the easiest for someone her size, but most of the class drifted off towards the make-shift racket-ball courts. She sighed in defeat, picking up a ping pong ball and rolling it in her fingers absent-mindedly.

"Hey, looking for a little competition?" A voice asked from behind, and Evaelle glanced back. Standing behind her was the girl she had followed to the school this morning. She had golden hazel eyes and copper brown skin, with glasses sitting on the bridge of her nose. Her curled hair was an unnatural red, but it suited her confident sparkle in her eyes. Next to her was another girl with a skinny frame and pale skin. Freckles dotted the bridge of her nose and her eyes were a striking blue. She had raven black, straight hair, but when the light hit it, it reflected a deep blue. It was pulled up in two short pony-tails, and she offered a kind smile.

"Marinette and I can take turns playing you, if you want." The red-head explained, before offering her hand. "I'm Alya, by the way."

Evaelle tentatively grasped her hand and shook it. "Evaelle. It's nice to meet you."

"Pretty name." Alya complimented. "Well, I have to warn you, Evaelle, I'm a pretty mean ping pong player. I'm an ace, some may say." She teased, grabbing her own paddle.

"Since when?" Marinette laughed, grabbing a paddle as well. "You've never mentioned that you can play ping pong before."

"Marinette, there are some things that even you don't know about me." Alya eluded. "Now come on, let's ping pong it up."

"Mind if I join?" A new voice asked, and from behind Marinette, a boy approached with an awkward smile stretching his lips. His skin tone was similar to Alya's, and his had warm brown eyes and a red cap perched on his head, hiding the majority of his hair. "My man Adrien got yanked away by Chloé."

"Yeah, that's perfect, Nino. You can be on my team, and Evaelle and Marinette can get creamed." Alya challenged.

"Oh, you're on." Marinette laughed.

Turns out, Marinette was the right girl to be a on team with. Despite her clumsy countenance, Marinette had extremely fast reflexes and gave Alya and Nino a run for their money. Whenever the ball bounced to her side, Marinette was quick to hit it back and she always added a crazy spin on the ball. Eva felt pressure on her to match her partner, which she did to her best ability. Eva already had excellent hand-eye coordination from drawing and painting, so her strikes were precise and graceful, but she didn't quite have the speed Marinette's motions processed. Still, with the two girls abilities combined, they were able to rack up points extremely quickly against their opponents.

"Wow, you two, that was quite the match." Alya's marveled at the end of the round. "I'm gonna be honest, Marinette. I didn't know you had it in you."

"Like you said, there are some things even you don't know." Marinette giggled. "Evaelle, you did good too! Do you play often?" She inquired as they walked to put the equipment away.

"Not very much. Just good hand-eye coordination I suppose." Evaelle shrugged with a small smile. "I thought everyone played well."

"Yeah, the rest of the class better hope ping pong isn't the sport we play next week, but we'll hand it to them!" Nino exclaimed as he put his paddle in the crate. "Hey, you guys wanna try help me free Adrien before the final bell?"

Marinette eyes lit up instantly, her mouth gaping in an excited smile. Alya placed a hand on Marinette's shoulder before addressing Nino. "Yeah, sure. You know I can't pass up a chance of putting Chloé in her place."

"Epic. I'm gonna get a swig of water first." Nino decided, turning and heading to the water fountain. As he walked, a pen clattered out of his pants pocket. Instantly, Eva stooped down and picked it up. Nino didn't seem like the kind of guy to carry extra pencils and pens with him, so Eva followed him to the fountain hesitantly.

"Hey, Nino, you dropped this." Eva stated, holding out the pen to Nino just as he reached the fountain.

"Max, fire!" A male voice shouted, and suddenly water burst from the fountain, causing Nino to jump back. It splashed the front of his shirt, but the majority of the spray struck Eva right in the face. She gasped, water filling her mouth and nose as she turned her face away, the water drenching her upper body. It ceased to a drizzle as two boys ran up to her and Nino.

"Dude- Evaelle, are you okay?" Nino asked in shock.

"I'm so sorry, miss. That blast of water of meant for Nino, not you!" Another boy with darker skin and thick glasses apologized. "Kim wanted to get back at Nino was getting his hair wet a week ago, so we rigged the fountain to spray water at him."

"So, this whole thing is about Nino getting his hair wet a week ago?"Alya demanded as she and Marinette arrived at the scene.

"That's not cool, Kim. You got Evaelle instead." Marinette scolded.

The second boy, Kim, was holding his gut as he laughed loudly, dramatically whipping a few tears from his eyes. "It may have been meant for Nino, but this is just as funny!" He exclaimed.

Evaelle could feel all the eyes of the students on her. She was aware of the fact that Marinette, Alya, and Nino were trying to speak to her as the cool air brushed her wet skin, hair, and clothes, chilling her to the bone. Tears collected in her eyes, and she shouldered her way past Nino and Max, running out of the gym and pushing the door open to the girls' locker room.

She leaned against the wall, a puddle slowly forming at her feet as the water from her shirt and hair dripped down and soaked the floor beneath her. Eva's salty tears mixed with the moisture on her face. She clenched Nino's pen in her hands- anger, embarrassment, and hatred all mixed together in her mind. How ignorant could those boys be? Who in their right mind would rig a fountain to spray water everywhere?

"Idiots!" She shouted as sobs raked her body. Dealing with Chloé had been hard enough, but this? This level of embarrassment was something far beyond Eva's capacity to handle.

Suddenly, Nino's pen warmed up in her hand. Eva opened her eyes to see a faint image projected in front of her. She blinked as she was comforted with striking, blue-grey irises.

"Evaelle, I am Papillon. I have the power to grant you revenge on those two boys and make them regret their discretions. All you have to do is get something for me in return." A smooth, deep voice muttered gently, seeming to speak right to her conscience.

Evaelle glared into the image, her throat burning to speak, urging her to say yes. It was tempting, to get revenge on those boys for a measly favor. Eva opened in her mouth to agree, but then, she remembered why water had been sprayed in the first place- to get back at Nino. She thought of those boys and their disregard for others. She thought of Chloé, Sabrina, Lila, and all there cruel comments. It made Evaelle furious in every sense of the word.

But while half of her mind screamed to take her revenge, the other half urged her not to. If she acted out on revenge, what made her better than any of the others? She would be just as bad as they were.

Evaelle gritted her teeth, trying to open her mouth to refuse. Whoever was on the other side of this project had a very strong will. She pushed against him with all her might, her hands clenched into tight fists as she fought the urge to say yes.

Finally, the words began to spill off her tongue. "Sorry, Papillon. But you're gonna have to find someone else to get whatever you desire." Evaelle muttered. Instantly, the pen's temperature skyrocketed, forcing Eva to drop the pen. Emerging from it was a black and purple butterfly, that flapped away out an open window. Even though it left, and Eva could no longer see his eyes.

"Oh. My. God!" Evaelle jumped as she turned to see Alya and Marinette, who were staring at her. Alya's eyes sparkled with excitement while Marinette stared at Evaelle, dumbfounded.

"What are you doing?" Eva asked in a strained voice, trying to catch her breath. "What's going on?"

"We came to check on you and make sure you're okay- GIRL, I have never seen anyone fight off an akuma like that!"

"Neither have I." Marinette muttered.

Evaelle looked quickly between the two of them. "I- I'm so confused. What's an akuma?"
