Chapitre Six: Façade
Evaelle had been in Paris for a full 24 hours, and already, she was more terrified than she had ever been in her life.
She wasn't quite sure what or who Antibug was, but her first instinct should have been something along the lines of getting down under the table and maybe crying softly as she thought about whether or not her parents would rush to the school as soon as they heard, or if they would stay safe at home, watching from the TV. In that moment, she personally didn't know what she would want them to do: stay safe or feel the need to come to her rescue.
However, this was not Evaelle's first instinct; curiosity was as always. She follow her classmate's lead and climb up to the window that faced into the school. She pressed her face to the glass, as though if she pressed hard enough, her head would magically pass through to get a better look.
At first, all the teen saw was an empty hallway no one sign of disturbance. Then she heard someone scream, "WHERE IS ALYA CÉSAIRE?" Eva saw a dark object fly through the air and land on the second floor. The figure stood up, revealing a blonde girl in a skin-tight black spandex with red circles decorating her suit throughout. She had piercing blue eyes that Evaelle instantly recognized.
Chloè.
Too little too late, Evaelle realized Antibug was staring right at her through the window. Eva ducked down pressed herself against the wall, but the damage was done. Antibug burst through the wall, swing a black and red yo-yo around as the class screamed. Antibug instantly found Evaelle again and swung her yo-yo. The wire wrapped around Evaelle's waist and yanked her forward until Antibug grabbed her by the wrist anc released her from the yo-yo.
"Well well well, if it isn't Miss Evaelle Trompeur." Antibug sneered as Evaelle kept trying to escape her grip. It was no use; Antibug hardly budged. She was unbothered enough to reach with her other hand and yank at Evaelle's bandana, snatching it out of her hair and causing Eva's curls to tumble into her face and eyes. "This perfect. I know exactly who'll come to the rescue to save you."
Antibug took off, dragging Evaelle with her. Within seconds, Evaelle found herself standing on the second floor railing, looking down at the first floor below. Evaelle gasped, her stomach doing a flip as she tried even harder to pry her wrist free of Antibug's grip.
"ALYA CÈSAIRE." Antibug screamed again. "If you don'r come forward in 10 seconds, I am dropping Evaelle Trompeur onto the first floor." She laughed before holding Evaelle out of the drop. Eva's plan of action switched from trying to pry herself free to holding onto Antibug's arm with her free hand.
"10. 9."
Evaelle's heart was beating loudly in her ears as she saw people begin to emerge from the classrooms, all watching in horror.
"8. 7."
Couldn't someone do something? Couldn't someone do something?
"6. 5."
Evaelle squeezed her eyes shut. This was it.
"4. 3."
"Chloè, stop!" Evaelle's eyes opened in an instant as she looked down to see Alya approaching from the first floor.
Antibug smiled. "Finally." She stated, before tossing Evaelle to the side.
Evaelle tried to scream- she would have if the air rushing down her throat hadn't jammed the airway. She braced for impact as she felt gravity take her to the ground.
When she did hit the ground, it was softer and warmer than expected. And she was alive- actually, she wasn't hurt at all. Evaelle gathered that she was in someone's arms. Someone who caught her the only seconds before hit the ground. She moved her hair out of her face to and was met with a pair of large, cat-like green eyes. She blinked, taking in the wild blonde hair, black mask covering half his face, and the black cat ears. This was the superhero from the video Evaelle had watched just yesterday. Chat Noir.
"Wow." She whispered, placing her hand on her forehead as Chat gently set her on her feet. "I- I think you just saved my life." Was the room spinning, or was she?
"Well, not everyone has the ability to always lands on their feet." He stated with a smirk and a wink.
Evaelle looked at him with furrowed brows. "Do you have something in your eye?"
"What? What made you say that?"
"You only blinked one eye."
"I- that's called a wink."
"Oh," Evaelle pursed her lips, "that's weird. We only just met."
Suddenly, somebody nearby cleared their throat, catching before Evaelle and Chat Noir's attention. Evaelle quickly gathered it was Ladybug- who would wear red and black spandex from head to toe. She looked quite displeased as she stared at Chat. "What are doing?"
"M'lady! Fashionably late, as usual." Chat practically purred. "I just saved this civilian from falling to her death."
"Right, but where's the akumatized villain?"
Both Chat and Evaelle looked around. Crowds of panicked people, but no Antibug... or Alya.
Eva placed her hands on either side of her forehead, her eyes wide now as she frantically double checked her surroundings. "She took Alya!"
"Well, I couldn't let her fall!" Chat urged as she gestured wildly to Evaelle.
"And that's good, but when I got here, you were just standing here, probably telling her a stupid cat pun."
Evaelle looked at Ladybug, blinking a couple times. "That's exactly what happened."
Ladybug shook her head. "I rest my case. Come on, we've got to track Antibug down!" She stated, throwing her yo-yo and escaping through the hole in the glass ceiling.
Chat Noir went to follow, but paused when Evaelle stepped forward. "Is there anyway I can help?" She urged. "It was completely my fault that Alya got captured."
Chat shook his head. "Sorry, short stack. You should leave this one to the professionals." He stated, before extending his staff and disappearing after Ladybug.
Evaelle stared after him, her lips pulling into a frown and her brows furrowing as her hands tightened it fists. "That was rude." She muttered.
Evaelle looked around, not sure what to do next. Everyone seemed to be leaving the school. They were all about to go home and wait for Ladybug and Chat Noir to save the day. Completely concerned with getting home to safety instead of concerned that Alya was taken hostage.
Evaelle's jaw clenched as her began to towards the door, steps slow at first. If she would have just kept her head down, this would have never happened. Alya wouldn't have felt the need to give herself up to Antibug. Ladybug and Chat Noir would have just showed up and taking care of the villain like they did yesterday.
But no. No, Evaelle had to ruin it.
Tears stung her eyes as Eva shakily took out her phone, pulling up the news channel. The helicopter showed that Antibug stood on the railing of the Pont de Arts bridge, spinning her yo-yo confidently as she looked down at Alya, who was wrapped up in a black and red rope and dangling over the Seine. Ladybug and Chat Noir were no where to be seen.
"Everyone, file out calmly. Go straight home!" One of the school teachers called out to the crowd of kids leaving.
Evaelle picked up the pace. She was not going home.
While she didn't know where exactly in the city the Pont des Arts bridge was, she could see a couple helicopters hovering in the air above. She began running, keeping her eyes to the sky as well as she could with her hair in her face. She was by no means an athlete, but she had a lot of adrenaline coursing through her body. Adrenaline and determination to save her first friend.
Getting there in time was one thing; actually saving Alya was a whole other feat on its own. Once she got there, what exactly was she going to do? Swing down like Tarzan and yank Alya out of the rope with some sort of superhuman strength? No, that wasn't going to happen. But she would have to figure something out quick, given the next corner she turned, she could plainly see the bridge.
The police were working on blocking off entry and were waving people away, who caned over one another, phones in hand as they tried to get a picture or video of the scene taking place. Eva slowed to a jog, knowing in reality, she could never push her way through the crowd, let alone get past the police to get to Alya. Even then, Antibug would be able to see the teen approach. And a girl of Evaelle's stature was simply no match for a superpowered Chloé.
Suddenly, a black figure jumped an astounding distance off a nearby roof, doing a few summersaults in the air, before landing on the bridge in an animalistic crouch. "You know, considering the slimming properties of black clothes, I'm partial to it myself. But a black Ladybug is just a bit off putting, don't you think?" Chat Noir teased, leaping backwards out the way as Antibug attempted to wrap him up in a yo-yo.
The crowd was now losing their minds as the sight of their hero, and the police's attention now seemed split between keeping the crowd at bay and watching the fight at hand. This was the perfect opportunity for Eva to slip past, and Chat Noir gave her the perfect idea of how.
Recovering some energy from her brief pause, she took off again, sneakers pounding against the pavement as she slipped through a few dozen people, zigzagging her way into an alley, where she grabbed hold of the rusted metal latter and pulled herself up. Once she was on the roof, she made her way quickly across the graveled surface before she got to the other side.
She peered over the edge, seeing that the sidewalk below was cleared of people by the police, with the bridge a mere 6 meters from the second latter. Evaelle doubted she could make her way down before an officer spotted her, but this was her only chance to save Alya. She had to help. If she was responsible for her capture, she had to at least try to rescue her.
She turned and made her way down the latter, and was around half way down when she heard the crowd scream. She turned her head, and saw that Ladybug had perched herself on the bridge, swinging a yo-yo at her side. The presence was the perfect distraction.
Eva made her way down the rest of the latter and sprinted towards the bridge. When she passed the line of police, they yelled at her to stop but Eva was too far out for anyone to grab her.
At this point, Eva hadn't decided exactly what she was gonna do to save Alya, but it was far too late to go back now. She kept going, her chest heaving with effort as she skirted along the edge of the bridge, searching for where the rope was tied to the fence that kept the bridge enclosed. It was hard to spot past the locks, however, so she climbed over the fence, keeping her small feet secure on the thin area that was available for standing. She held on tightly to the fence, sliding along the edge until she made her way to the rope, and bent down, peering over the edge.
"Alya? Alya, can you hear me?" Evaelle called. Her head began to whirl as she looked down towards the churning river below.
Hearing a voice, Alya craned her neck up, her amber eyes widening in surprise at the sight of Evaelle peering over the edge. "Evaelle? What're you doing here?" She asked in shock, her voice just barely able to reach Eva's ear.
"Just hold on. I'm gonna pull you up." Evaelle stated, grabbing the rope and yanking it with all her muscle strength. It was hard, considering Eva was only around 50 kilograms, and Alya was easily 9 kilos heavier. She let out a grunt of strain and gritted her teeth as sweat began to bead on her forehead. Her eyes squeezed shut as she stepped on top of the rope and pulled the rope again, trying her hardest to pull her friend up, but her energy was waning, her adrenaline fading and giving way to fatigue, which made every muscle movement rough and painful.
Suddenly, someone from the battle going on behind her slammed into the fence next to Evaelle. Eva was thrown forward, her feet slipping over the edge. She let out a surprised scream as she clung to the rope and slid down with momentum.
"Evaelle!" Alya shouted. Eva realized that if she broke the rope or knocked Alya into the water, Alya wouldn't be able to keep herself afloat with her arms and legs tied. So Evaelle let go, her stomach dropping as she accelerated past Alya, locking her jaw as she prepared to hit the water.
Instead, something hit her from the side, and within seconds, she was still in the air, strong arms holding her securely to their chest.
Evaelle gasped as she was able to breath again, looking over to see it was once again Chat Noir catching her. He landed gracefully on the sidewalk next to the Seine and Eva's feet shakily found the ground.
Chat did not looked pleased. "I thought I told you to leave it to the professionals?" He chided.
Eva stared at him in disbelief. "I told you, I'm the reason Alya was here. I needed to help her!"
"I'm sure your heart is in the right place, but you seriously could have gotten seriously hurt. Oh, wait-" Chat grabbed one of Eva's hands, putting it palm-up to reveal torn and bleeding skin, "too late."
Eva yanked her hand away and, realizing Chat still had her close to his chest, pushed herself away from him. "So much for a hero." She snapped.
"What is that supposed to mean?" He challenged.
"Well, I've never met a good guy who patronizes somebody for just TRYING TO DO THE RIGHT THING!" Evaelle screamed.
Silence settled over them. "MIRACULOUS LADYBUG!" Ladybug's voice reached them from the bridge, and bright pink swarms of ladybugs burst out in the sky. A group of them broke off and swarmed around Evaelle's hands before disappearing, leaving the skin on Eva's hands perfectly in tact.
Chat Noir's mask furrowed above his eyes as he sighed, flexing his hands before crossing his arms. "Look, I wasn't trying to hurt your feelings. But we had the situation under control. Just leave it to the real heroes next time, 'kay? We just don't want anyone getting hurt."
Eva's lip curled slight as she turned away. "Spare me the petty kindest." She grumbled as she began to walk away. "I see through your façade."
