Chapitre Neuf: Agents d'infiltration

Picture above is Naari! Only inaccuracy is that the inside of her ears should be a light pink, similar to her tail.

Adrien's eye widened and he stiffened slightly, taking a small step back. "Evaelle? Wha- what are you doing here?"

Evaelle's eyes widened as well as her mind froze with the overload of information circling in her head. Was Adrien working for Papillon too? What is he doing here?!

"I- uh-" Evaelle tongue felt heavy as Adrien and her continued to stare at one another, stiff as boards. Eva was very aware of Naari pressed to the small of her back, trying to stay out of sight.

That's when Paon stepped in, placing a firm hand on Evaelle's shoulder. "Evaelle was meeting with your father about using some of her artwork as inspiration for his next line." Evaelle gave Paon a wide-eyed side glance. How did she know that Evaelle was an artist? She didn't remember mentioning that.

Adrien smiled slightly. "Wow, that's so cool, Evaelle, you never mentioned that to me."

Evaelle realized she needed to speak now. She cleared her throat, crossing her arms over her chest as her wide-eyed stare turned into a stern glare. "I was planning on mentioning it during our study session, but you bailed."

"Oh, right." Adrien muttered as he rubbed the back of his neck. "Sorry about that, I was wrong about how much time I had before fencing practice." Adrien's gaze switched from Evaelle to Paon. "Maybe Evaelle could stay and work on our project now, since she's already here?"

"I'm not sure your father-"

"It's fine, Nathalie." Evaelle, Paon, and Adrien all looked to the atelier, where Papillon stood within view. "Evaelle may stay until dinner to work on your project."

"Awesome! Come on, Evaelle, I'll show to my room." Adrien gestured. Evaelle followed hesitantly, sparing a glance back at Paon, or... Nathalie, and Papillon... Adrien's father.

Evaelle felt something small brush up against her ear. "Are you okay? Your heart to beating really fast." Naari whispered in her ear.

"I'm fine, just hide." Evaelle whispered. Naari flew into her backpack without another word.

Adrien and Evaelle climbed the stairs in silence before reaching a door that lead to a very, VERY spacious bedroom. Like, two story bedroom complete with a foosball table, piano, a personal library, a rock climbing wall, two skateboard ramps, a basketball half court- Evaelle had to stop taking in everything and take a second to rub her temples. There was just too much.

"Sorry, I know it's a little much as first." Adrien laughed.

"A little much? I'm pretty sure this room is bigger than my entire apartment." Evaelle stated. Her eyes caught view of the outer wall, entirely made up of glass panes, allowing for a beautiful view of Paris. She felt her muscles relax slightly at the sight.

Adrien sighed as he threw his satchel on his bed, walking over to stand next to Eva. "My father put everything he could possibly think of in here to keep me entertained, but I'd rather be anywhere else."

Evaelle glanced up at him, her brows furrowed. "Well, of course. You can have all the entertainment in the world, but without someone to share it with, it's... worthless."

Adrien glanced down at her. "That's exactly how I feel."

Evaelle quickly looked away, training her gaze on the buildings out in the horizon. "It would be easier for you to keep friends to share with if you didn't abandon them at the library without warning."

Aiden sighed. "I know, I felt horrible." He pulled out his phone. "You should give me your number. That way if something ever comes up again, I can let you know."

Evaelle eyed his phone, before switching her gaze to Adrien's as she crossed her arms over her chest. "I suppose... I can do that." She stated wistfully, taking Adrien's phone and typing in her number. "I'd offer you my phone but I have to keep it shut off so my mom doesn't find me."

Adrien raised a brow. "Super strict mom?"

"Ever since I got myself knocked off the Pont des Arts, she has been." Eva muttered, handing Adrien his phone back.

Adrien's eyes widened before he lowered them. "Right. I saw that go down on TV. I'm sure Chat Noir didn't mean to do that."

"Do what? Be a complete jerk?" Evaelle let out a short laugh.

Adrien's cheeks flushed slightly. "Uh, no, I meant knocking you off the bridge."

"Figures he's the one who knocked me off." Evaelle muttered.

Adrien frowned. "You really don't like him, huh?"

Evaelle shook her head, squeezing her eyes shut as her whole body tightened. "Let's just drop it. We should get started on our project before I have to leave."

Adrien nodded, walking over to his pristine white couch. Evaelle followed him. "So, Mademoiselle Lefevre said that our options were a poster board, a in-person skit, a short film, or a PowerPoint. What were you thinking?"

Evaelle crossed one leg over the other as she tapped her chin, lips pursed. "Well, naturally, I lean towards the poster board. I can make a nice design for it. What about you?"

"I'm open to anything, really. I think the poster board's a great idea, though. I can figure out what subjects our research will cover and you can come up with a design based off of that." Aiden suggested.

Evaelle's lips pulled up into a small smile. "Sounds good to me."

"Where have you been?" Evaelle's mother pressed as soon as the door clicked shut behind Eva.

"I was at the library." Eva stated, her face expressionless. She had expected this.

"Yeah? Did you hear about that other akuma attack? Were you involved in this one too?" Her mother demanded.

"I was at the library." Evaelle repeated. "My partner and I worked on our history project, and then we headed over to his house when the library closed."

"And you couldn't have just texted me and let me know what's going on?" Her mother inquired, the bridge of her nose scrunching. Eva swore she could see a vein bulging out of her temple.

"No. You would just come pick me up because you can't trust me to live my life anymore." Eva muttered.

"Well, your latest actions haven't been adequate enough for any of my trust, and this is just added to it!" Her mother yelled.

"Kloe, please, can we just talk about this calmly?" Eva's father sighed from the couch. "Eva's a responsible child who made one little slip up. We can't treat her like a criminal because of one mistake."

"Excuse me? Little slip up? Félix, she was thrown off a bridge, for Christ's sake. Don't tell me that I shouldn't be questioning her when she gets home three hours late from school." Her mother bit back.

"Well, the girl already told you where she's been! Let it go!"

"I don't know what your issues been since we've moved, but it-" The words turned to murmurs as Evaelle left her parents in the living room to escape to her bedroom. She closed the door, trying to fight the tears welling in her eyes and spilling over onto her face.

Naari flew out of Eva's backpack, floating by the door. "Oh dear. Do they always bicker like that?" She asked.

"Since we moved to Paris? Yeah." Eva muttered, slipping her backpack off and flopping down on her bed. She pulled out her phone, turning it on. As soon as it was activated, all the phone calls and text messages her mother had sent came through. Along with a text message from one unknown number.

Hey Evaelle, it's Adrien. I
probably won't be able to
get together to work on the
project with you in person
tomorrow, but I have time
Saturday!

Evaelle typed out her reply.

That probably works out,
I'm expecting to be grounded
tomorrow, so I doubt I'll be
able to leave the house.

Maybe I can convince my
dad to let me come over
there so your mom can
have some peace of mind?

Evaelle smiled.

I'll see what I can do.
See you at school.

"School? Oh boy, that sounds fun!" Naari cheered, peering at the phone screen before she turned to Eva with a hopeful smile. "I'm assuming that school involves not being here. I don't like it here. It's too tense."

"We're not actually going to school tomorrow. Remember, Papillon said that our first mission will be tomorrow. I want to be ready, and that means school is a no-go."

"Oooohhhh, sneaking around like two undercover agents! I love it!" Naari squeaked.
