Chapitre Dix: Le Pied Piper
"I'll be out late tonight, hon. The cast is going out to eat, and I was invited to come along." Eva's father voice emanated into her room as Eva got dressed, slowly putting on her belt as she listened to her parents.
Her mother sighed, whether in irritation or sadness, Evaelle could not tell. "That's fine, honey. I can just order out tonight." Her tone carried a tense bitterness.
"I don't know why you're so upset about this."
"I'm not. I'm just not going to cook dinner for just Eva and I. So if you go out, I'm going to order out."
Eva tuned them out, trying not to think about them fighting again as she pulled her hair back with her bandana. Paris seemed to have tainted this family- ever since they had arrived, they couldn't seem to stop bickering. Or maybe Evaelle was to blame, since it truly started when she attempted to save Alya. Her throat burned as she clenched her teeth, holding back tears. She couldn't help but believe that she was responsible for her parents' unhappiness right now.
Suddenly, the flash of white filled her vision before Evaelle was blinking to adjust her eyes as Naari stared into her soul. "Ooohhhh, Evaelle! This is so exciting! I can't wait to transform with you. We're going to be the best senti-kwami and hero team ever! That Chat Noir will wish he never messed with Evaelle Trompeur." She rambled on, practically shaking with excitement.
Evaelle smiled. This mission was a daunting one, so she was incredibly grateful that she had some emotional support in Naari. "I like the enthusiasm, Naari. Just keep your voice down so my parents don't hear you."
"Oops- sorry." Naari whispered hoarsely, although a smile still donned her whiskered face.
"No worries." Evaelle giggled, grabbing her backpack and unzipping it. "Here, hop in. We should get going." Without another word, Naari flew into Eva's backpack, which she zipped and threw over her shoulder, stepping out into the hallway, where she was faced with a thick tension in the air between her mom and dad. They must have just finished fighting.
Evaelle took a deep breath. "I'm heading to school." She stated. Lying was getting easier and easier every time.
"Alright, Eva. It'll be just us for dinner. So try to think of what you want for take out." Her mom said.
"Alright, I will. Oh! I forgot to ask, but I have project with a classmate that we need to get together to work on. Do you think he could come over here?"
Eva's heart raced as she watched her mom actually smile. "That sounds fine, Eva. What day will he be here? I can cook something for dinner if he's interested in staying to eat."
"Uh, I think he said he's available tomorrow. Would that work?" Eva asked.
"Yes, I can work with that." She stated. "I'll go to the store today."
"Sounds great. Could you pick up a poster board for me as well?"
"Yes I can."
"Okay, perfect. Thanks, mom." Evaelle said, before she turned and waved to her dad, who was reading the newspaper on the couch. "Bye, dad."
"Bye, Eva. Have a good day." He said without looking up.
Eva frowned. Looks like she could only have a parent be kind to her at a time these days. She exited the apartment and booked it down the stairs in an effort to avoid Alya. It would be extremely hard to explain why she wasn't going to school to her. Evaelle took the stairs to the ground floor two to three at a time, tripping slightly as she did so. She pushed herself out of the door and rushed into the sunny morning, taking a deep breath and looking around for an alleyway. Once she found one, she skirted inside, unzipping her backpack and allowing Naari to fly out before she stuffed it behind a dumpster.
"Okay, Naari, this is it." Eva stated, bouncing slightly as she stood up. Her nerves were on edge and she was shaking ever-so-slightly.
"Okay, Evaelle, all you have to say is either "Naari, transform me" or "Naari, whiskers out"!"
"Okay..." Evaelle took a long, deep breath. This was it. "Naari, transform me!"
The next sequence of events ran so smoothly, they seemed to be completely automated. Naari swirled and flew so fast in the air that she looked like a white blur as she dove into Eva's belt, turning it bubbling purplish-black. The black fog seemed to travel both up and down her body, completely engulfing her in a cloud of darkness. When it cleared, Eva turned to a window of a seemingly abandoned building to behold herself.
The first thing she noticed was her eyes; her irises were red, and the surrounding white was now a faint pink. A white mask surrounded those dangerous eyes, starting just above her eyebrows and coming to the bridge of her nose. The mask covered the sides of her face as well, curving along her jawline. On her cheek were wiry, black whiskers, and keeping her curly hair out of her face was her transformed bandana, which was now white and sported large, rounded ears. Utterly speechless, her eyes left the window and glanced down at her figure. From her neck to her feet, she donned pure white spandex, with white cuffs covering the whole of her forearms, her fingers sharpened to a point, like claws. Around her waist was a pink belt that not only encompassed her waist, but trailed out behind her to create a tail. Attached to the side of belt was some sort of rod with a thick white wire wrapped around it. On the front of this belt was an emblem with a glowing white paw print.
Eva looked back to the window, her eyes sparkling as she smiled. The smile revealed that her two front teeth were quite enlarged. What a subtle way of throwing off her identity. It was perfect.
Suddenly, a purple glow surrounded her eyes, and Papillon's eyes looked into her own.
"Greetings, Evaelle. How does it feel, standing here in your new, powerful form?" There was a hint of a smile in Papillon's eyes.
Evaelle returned it with a board grin. "I feel free." She admitted. And it was true, as each second ticked by in this suit, the more separated she felt from everything else; her parents, her new home, the whole of Paris. It was as if she was a completely different individual.
"Excellent." Papillon responded. "The time has come to finally save Paris from the selfishness of Ladybug and Chat Noir. As we have discussed before, your senti-monster will act as a kwami, and your belt a Miraculous. As Naari explained yesterday, you have the power of super speed. This speed not only allows you to run incredibly fast, but also see the world around you slow down. To use this power, you must crouch into a running position and say "Whirlwind". As a mouse, this heightened sense is your only defense against your enemies; that, and your whip."
Evaelle's eyes dropped to the whip that was neatly attached to her belt. She unclipped it with easy and it unraveled to the ground. "It's magic of course, just like the suit and your powers. It's indestructible, and however far you need the wire to extend, it will in a single motion."
Eva waved the whip around, trying to get used to the feeling. She had never used a whip before, but with any other weapon, she would have been just as lost; it's not like she could bring down akumas with a paint brush. Despite initial confusion, it felt normal almost instantly, like an extension of herself.
"I have a target in sight at this very moment. You'll find your villain at the animal control center near the outskirts of the city. Move quickly. Remember, this battle in is your favor. However, you should not let your guard down. It will be an easier battle, but still on your own and the target doesn't know your allegiance to me. Do not let me down, or this autonomy experiment will be shut down immediately."
"I will not fail you, Papillon." Evaelle promised, and Papillon's eyes vanished, leaving her a clear view of Paris. In the distance, an explosion rocked the ground and debris shot into the air.
Evaelle quickly found a fire escape on the nearest building and scaled the metal to the top. It was very reminiscent of the day she tried to save Alya on the bridge. Then, she was running on pure adrenaline, and her body labored to carry her there. Now, she was not only climbing to the roof, but bounding and leaping up the level with the skill of an Olympic gymnast. Her suit seemed to feed her muscles and mind with endorphins unlike anything her body could naturally provide. Or maybe it wasn't even that complicated. Maybe it was just simply the magic of the akuma and her sentimonster.
Once she reached the top of the building, she spotted a cloud of dust pluming up to the sky in the distance. "I guess I've found the animal shelter." She muttered to herself. She had gotten use to talking to Naari already; she wondered for a second if the little kwami could hear her, any if she was inside the belt. Evaelle got out her whip, letting it unravel onto the rooftop. "Let's see what this thing can really do!" She shouted, throwing her arm out and sending the wire of the whip flying through the air. It extended far into the city, before wrapping itself around something solid. Eva gave it a good yank, and the wire didn't budge. She took a deep breath. "Well, here goes nothing." And with that, she jumped off the roof.
The whip instantly began retracting, pulling her towards her destination. She let out a shout of joy, looking down at the people below who looked up and pointed in amazement and confusion. She smiled joyfully. She was doing it!
She landed on the roof her wire had caught, and looked in the direction of the smoke billowing into the sky. Determined, she threw out her whip again and began another fly out.
As she swung over the street, she saw a young woman with her baby running, a scream echoing through the street that alarmed the rest of the citizens. Chasing her down was a fat pug which foamed at the mouth, barking madly, it's eyes glowing red. Evaelle gasped, and instantly pulled her wire to stop. This time, it recoiled and she dropped to the ground. She struggled to find her balance at first, before running to block the dog from the woman. It growled, launching itself at Evaelle. She ducked just in time. The pug landed on it's feet, skidding across the ground and running at the woman once more. She let out a desperate scream.
Evaelle's eyes searched the street frantically. A subway station. A mailbox. A street lamp. A garbage can. A garbage can. She swung her arm and shot her whip out. It wrapped around the metal can and she pulled it toward her, lid and all. She jumped up and grabbed it, before racing towards the pug and slamming the garbage can over the animal. She forced the lid under the lip of the can, securing the threat for now.
"Oh, thank you!" The woman cried, clutching her child to her chest. Everyone else in the vicinity cheered as well; some had their phones pulled out, recording.
And then, in the distance, more aggressive barking, cats screaming aggressively. Evaelle's brows furrowed. Animals had broken out of the shelter, but why were they acting so aggressive? Rabies? The foaming mouth matched that, but the glowing red eyes...
"Mind control." Evaelle whispered as the crowd's cheers began to die down, replaced with nervous chatter.
"Everyone!" She shouted as loud as she could to get their attention. They fell silent, phones pointed in her direction. "Get inside! Lock the doors! Go as high up as you possibly can! As quickly as possible!" Evaelle yelled. It took a second, but then everyone moved at once, running in different directions to the nearest building.
Evaelle nodded, satisfied, and took off again, flying above the street. She had to get to the source of the chaos, and luckily, she wasn't that far away now. Dogs and cats were roaming the streets, which quickly cleared without Eva's warning. All their eyes glowed red. They looked malnourished and sickly, their fur patchy, and white foam dripped from in between their teeth. Eva felt a pang of pity even though they tried to jump up and catch her by the ankle. She hoped that once she took care of the other akuma, the animals wouldn't be sickly anymore.
She arrived at the animal control center. Here was the center of chaos. Employees and police were attempting desperately to control the animals, but to no prevail. A black cat launched itself at a red-headed cop, who shouted in protest. Evaelle was quick to act, throwing her whip so that it wrapped around the cat's waist, and she pulled it off the officer and right into her hand. She held it tightly by the scruff as it hissed in a full fit, reaching out it's claw towards Eva's face, but it couldn't reach.
Eva was not impressed, and she turned to the officer. "Got anything to contain this?" He nodded with wide eyes, before running to his car and pulling out a trapping cage. Evaelle shoved the cat into the cage, when suddenly, there was a crashing sound. She turned quickly on her heels to see the door of the animal control center, which was already been broken open, now lay useless on the ground. Standing in the doorway was a tall, lanky man wearing tattered, colorful clothing and sporting bare feet. A black bandana was tied over his eyes, which gleamed pink, similar to Eva's. He had wild, long facial hair that seemed to resemble whiskers, and in his hands, her held a gleaming pipe.
"How does it feel, watching your favorite, fluffy animals become the stereotype you have pinned on rats?" He sneered viciously. "Soon all of your favorite pets will behave like the vermin you fear!"
"Hey!" Evaelle shouted. His small eyes landed on her.
"What's this? A mouse? Well, the Pied Piper deals in rats, but I suppose any rodent will do!" He lifted his pipe to his lips, and a hypnotic sound filled the air. From behind him, rats streamed into the the streets, hissing and jumping towards Evaelle.
She yelled, sending her whip out and sweeping away the front row of rats. They scattered throughout the streets. As the rest of the pedestrians began to flee, Eva watched as one of the rats hopped onto a dog who's leash was tied to a pole. It yelped, trying desperately to rid itself of the rat, before it was enveloped into a black cloud, which dispersed when the rat jumped off, revealing the same dog, but now it appeared sickly, aggressive, and it's eyes glowed red.
"He's using rats to infect the other animals!" Evaelle muttered to herself in realization.
Suddenly, Papillon's eyes appeared in front of her's. "Very good, Evaelle. His akuma is located in his pipe. You must retrieve it and destroy it. Finish this before Ladybug and Chat Noir can arrive."
"Got it!" Evaelle nodded, and Papillon's eyes vanished. She threw her whip, which latched onto the roof of the animal control building, and swung herself towards the Pied Piper. He simply continued playing his music, and a wave of rats shot up into the air, latching themselves onto Eva. She screamed, pulling herself up onto the roof, where she had to pull several of the rats off of her. Her suit, being magic, was in tact, but the bites still throbbed with pain. She looked down over the side, and saw that the rats were now scaling the building.
"I'll never be able to get to him with those rats surrounding him. They're too fast!" She said to herself, becoming frustrated and scared. She didn't want to fail. Not now. She was so close to completing the mission.
Then, she remembered she had the power of super-speed.
She crouched into a running position, just as Papillon had told her. "WHIRLWIND!" She shouted. Her feet glowed a fierce red color, and when she pushed off the roof, it seemed as though the world around her held still. She was moving normally, or at least, from her perspective she was, but as she leaped off the building, she saw how slow everyone below her moved. The Pied Piper's music was now a low hum. The rats were still focused on the top of the roof, where Eva had just been. It was like watching a snail move.
She landed much farther from the roof than she intended, and rolled across the cement. She now stood next to a cop car, where she could see an officer trying to pull Alya into the safety of the vehicle, but she was determined to keep her phone trained on the action and recording. Evaelle pushed off again. She had no idea how much longer she had until the power wore off. So she ran towards the Pied Piper, plowing her way through the mass of rats. They were just now stopping, realizing Eva was no longer on the roof, but their senses were not quick enough to lock onto her at the moment. Even as she ran through them, they simply were pushed aside by the force, and began flailing through the air slowly.
She launched herself at the Pied Piper, tackling him. Before his face could even fully contort into an expression of surprise and pain, Evaelle had already ripped the pipe from his fist and snapped it over her leg.
Seconds later, time returned to normal.
The Pied Piper fell to his knees, surrounded in a black smoke before turning into a normal teenage boy. The rats remained, though now lost and unsure, sniffing the air and their surroundings, trying to find direction. The akuma, this one mostly black with purple accents, fluttered into the air. Eva quickly clasped her hands around it, looking around for something to contain it in.
Alya was now approaching her, still holding her phone. "Wow! Just, wow! I've never seen another person defeat an akuma- not even Chat Noir has done it without Ladybug!"
Evaelle looked to her desperately. "Alya, quick, find something to trap the akuma in!" She urged quickly.
Alya blinked in surprise. "Oh, uh, yes." She stammered, before taking off, doing a strange hopping-dance as she went to avoid stepping on any of the now calm rats. She retrieved a recycle bin in front of an office building, before jogging back to Eva, who let the akuma go in the bin. Alya slammed the lid on as soon as Eva retracted her hands.
"Thanks." Eva breathed.
Alya didn't seem interested in her gratitude. "Are you a new Miraculous superhero? Do you know Ladybug?" She pressed, stepping forward. "Do you know who Ladybug really is? How did you know my name?"
Evaelle wasn't sure how to answer the majority of those questions, but when she went to open her mouth, her belt began to beep, and one of the pads of the mouse print flashed and disappeared. Her timer.
"Sorry, but I have to run. Stay here until Ladybug arrives and can get rid of that akuma." Eva instructed, pulling out her whip.
"Wait!" Alya exclaimed. "I never caught your name."
Eva paused for another second, before she threw her whip and caught it on the rooftop of a distant building. "Souris Blanche." And with that, she pulled the whip, and swung away out of sight.
Alya followed her on her phone for as long as she could before turning it on herself. "It looks like Paris has another new superhero. You'll find all the updates here on my Ladyblog. Stay tuned!" She smiled, before ending the video. Just as she did, a teen wearing red and black spandex landed on the pavement next to Alya. From the rooftops, Chat Noir followed her, vaulting onto the street.
Alya's eyes lit up. "Ladybug!"
Ladybug's eyes scanned the scene in confusion and surprise. "Where's the akumatized villain?" She inquired.
"Oh, he's right there." Alya pointed to the boy kneeling on the cement, who was searching through the multitude of rats desperately. "Don't worry, Souris Blanche already took care of it."
Chat Noir looked at Alya in surprise. "Souris Blanche?"
Ladybug looked surprised as well, but there was a more pressing issue. "Where's the akuma?"
"Oh, right in here." Alya opened the recycle bin, and the akuma fluttered back out into the air.
Ladybug quickly took action, spinning her yo-yo rapidly. "I free you from evil!" She shouted, and threw her yo-yo at the akuma. It opened in the air and snapped shut around the akuma. The yo-yo flew back into her hands, and she smiled, opening he yo-yo, which releases a now glowing white butterfly. "Bye-bye, little butterfly."
Having no lucky charm to throw into the air, she simply threw up her yo-yo again, shouting, "Miraculous Ladybug!" Like magic, all the damage done by the Pied Piper disappeared: the animal control building was repaired, all the cats and dogs were no longer aggressive and sickly, and all but one rat vanished. The former Pied Piper gasped, scooping the creature up and hugging him close to his chest.
Ladybug glanced at Chat Noir, who looked lost. "Uh, pound it?" He asked, offering her his fist. She met him half way before turning to Alya.
"So, who's this Souris Blanche?"
