Chapitre Cinq: Le deuxième jour

Evaelle woke up early from a pretty fitful night of sleep. All night she had nightmares alternating between her unpacking boxes just to have them refill with more and more stuff every time she turned away, to her going to school and accidentally forgetting to wear pants, to her and Alya meeting Ladybug, only for Alya and Ladybug to turn into snakes and attack her.

She pulled herself out of bed and made her way to the bathroom, where she got in the shower. Because her hair had taken such a beating yesterday, Eva took extra care with her hair and was particularly critical of it as she scrubbed her scalp, deep conditioned and detangled. She scrubbed her face and body down before putting on a leave-in conditioner, and shut the water off. She patted herself dry, and felt relaxed for the first time that day.

Evaelle lotioned herself down in the bathroom before running across the hallway in her towel and closing her door. She chose a red blouse and a pair of darker jeggings to wear to school, accessorized by a white belt. Once she was dressed, she went back to the bathroom to style her hair. After about 20 minutes, she had brushed and defined her curls using various creams, gels, and oils. She then threw her curls up in a shirt to plop it while she ate breakfast and brushed her teeth. She finished off by quickly diffusing. To keep the stray pieces out of her face, she opted to wear a white bandana tied neatly on the top of her head.

Hoping to have a fresh slate today, Evaelle grabbed her backpack, slipped Mylène's burrowed clothes inside, slid on a pair of flip-flops, and descended down the flight of stairs, meeting Alya at the door to walk to school.

"So," Alya began, "about that interview on the Ladyblog?"

Evaelle smiled as she raised a brow, glancing up at Alya. "You were being serious?"

"Of course! You're story could inspire others and we could help Ladybug save Paris by cutting down on akumatizations." Alya explained.

"You really look up to Ladybug." Evaelle commented.

"How can I not? She's so courageous and smart! She's everything I aspire to be." Alya stated as her cheeks flushed slightly.

Eva took notice and her eyes widened in realization. "Oh, you like her."

"I mean, a little. Like a celebrity crush sorta thing." Alya gushed, before stopping Eva and giving her a stern stare. "The only people who know I'm bi are my girlfriends so PLEASE don't say anything. If that got around to Chloé I think I would die."

"Don't worry, I get it." Eva stated.

"You get it?" Alya questioned.

Eva cleared her throat, holding on tightly to the straps of her backpack. "I'm demisexual.
I would never even think out someone because I know the fear surrounding the idea."

"Oh, yay! That's so cool." Alya complimented. "I didn't mean to scare you and make it sound like everyone in our class is out to get us. It's just some of them can't keep their mouths shut. Like Nino. You can't ever tell Nino a secret." Evaelle laughed at that. "You can trust most the girls though. Mylène, Alix, Rose, Juleka, and Marinette are so nice. Pretty much the only girls you can't trust are Sabrina and Chloé."

"What about Lila?" Eva questioned. She seemed nice enough, but her backhanded comment yesterday definitely rubbed her the wrong way.

"Hmmm, Lila's nice enough, but Marinette doesn't like her so we kind of just let her... exist. I don't mind her, but out of respect for Marinette I don't hang out Lila too much."

Evaelle nodded slowly. "Gotcha." She stated as they arrived at the school courtyard. "And to answer your first question, yes, you can interview me for your Ladyblog."

"Really? AHH, you're the best, Evaelle!" Alya cheered as she bounced slightly on her toes.

Evaelle smiled at her reaction. Today was already much more promising than yesterday. Obviously it was- after all, she thought to herself, no day could be worse than yesterday. It could only get better.

Evaelle split off from Alya when they entered the building. Alya wanted to find Marinette before the first bell rang. Evaelle decided in was best to find her way to first hour while the hallways were relatively clear. She arrived with a few other students as Mademoiselle Bustier opened the door. Evaelle took her seat in the back, glancing up every so often to see if Alya, Marinette, Nino, or Adrien had arrived yet. She also watched for Mylène so Eva could return her clothes.

While she waited, she prepared for class to begin by grabbing out her textbook and notebook. Evaelle was bent over, grabbing said items out of her backpack when a ear-grating voice hit her ears. "Well, if it isn't the new girl. She's seems happier today, doesn't she, Sabrina?"

Eva's grip tightened on her book and her jaw clenched as she slowly sat up to face Chloè and Sabrina, glaring at Eva while they practically leaned on her desk. Eva felt her throat constrict as Chloè let out a sharp, short laugh. "She must be excited that she actually managed to dress herself today!"

Eva glared and tried to urge herself to speak, to say something- anything, instead of sitting there, but she drew a complete and utter blank. Chloè seemed to find that amusing. "Oh, is the little mousy afraid to speak? Honestly, I would be too if I was wearing that outfit. Who told you that bandana was cute? You're mommy? It looks like you just came home your factory work in the 1950s or something." She laughed, reaching forward and tugging slightly at the white fabric. Evaelle reflexively pulled away, and the knot unravelled, freeing Eva's curls.

Evaelle's hands flew to her head, pushing her hair back from her face, her nose scrunching as she stood, her lip curling slightly. "Don't touch me." Eva voice was quiet, but her words carried spiteful tone.

Chloé's eyes narrowed while Sabrina's eyes widened. "Excuse me? Don't touch you? How about you not even speak to me, runt. Do you know who I am- who my father is?" She demanded, pointing her finger in Eva's face as her eyebrows furrowed.

"Sorry to break your heart, Chloé," a familiar voice spoke and Evaelle glanced over in relief to see Alya standing hardly a meter away, her arms crossed and her eyes narrowed. Marinette was next to her in a similar stance, her blue eyes spitting a hateful venom Chloè, "but no one really cares about who your father is. Or who you are, for that matter."

"Please," Chloé let out a short, sarcastic laugh, "you're completely irrelevant, Alya. You care more about attending to your Ladyblog then getting yourself some glasses that actually fit your face." She sneered.

Alya smirked, her eyes flickering to Marinette, who's lips tugged up in the slightest smile. "Make fun of the Ladyblog all you want. At least I don't dress up as Ladybug in my free time."

That did it. That one sentence, that single phrase. It seemed to strike a chord in Chloé. At first, Chloè became rigid and stiff. Then, her lower lip trembled slightly, and her eyes glazed with moisture. As the bell rang and Mademoiselle Bustier called them to their seats, Chloè stormed out of the room as fast as her feet would carry her.

Evaelle blinked as she looked at Alya. "You're the best." She muttered with a smile.

"I know." Alya winked as she and Marinette made their way to their seats. Evaelle wrapped her hair back up in her bandana as Mademoiselle Bustier began her lecture.

Besides the Chloè fiasco, first hour was rather uneventful. They began learning grammar for their next unit on Shakespeare. Evaelle found it rather difficult. Old English translated into French was extremely hard to comprehend- the sentences never seemed to be cohesive. Still, with a little common sense, Evaelle managed. After class, Eva caught Mylène and returned her clothes.

Luckily, English class was much easier.

"Repeat after me: The weather outside is fairly cool." Eva's English teacher directed.

"The weather outside is fairly cool." The students repeated with ease. Eva found the English class rather simple due to the fact that she had already learned their current unit back in Brussels, but the simple work was welcomed and Eva did the translations without complaint.

Suddenly, a large boom rang out from within the school and everyone jumped in surprise, shocked gasps ringing through the room.

"Everyone, please, remain calm. Let us go through the lockdown procedure." Evaelle's teacher said calmly.

"Oh my God!" A voice rang out, and everyone's head snapped towards the source of the voice, a girl who was sitting by the window. Her face was practically pressed against the glass and when she looked back at the other students, her eyes were wide with fear. "It's Antibug!"
