Seven
Insomia had to be Jade's least favourite thing. Staring up at the ceiling each night as if hoping the sky would just consume her there and then became a habit she was all too used to. She even forgot how it felt to drift into slumber, the feeling had become foreign to her stubborn body.
To add on to the sleeplessness, Jaydess hated the dark. It reminded her of the side of her she hid under a mask, a side no one was meant to see, a side she preferred not to look at.
But despite trying to ignore the darkness, the pit of emptiness still remained. The burden she had carried along with her for most of her existence, gnawed at her all the time. She almost forgot the feeling of being whole. The little bit she remembered was from watching other happy people walking around, careless as it seemed. It made her remember once she was like that.
But that was then. Now she was broken. Too far gone to be fixed, she often told herself. Maybe it was true, humans aren't like androids, after all, they can't be fixed or re-created. They live then they die and that's all there is to them.
Somewhere deep down, though, Jaydess just couldn't find the guts to end everything. Possibly because she still believed that one day it would change and she'd be restored to her old self, whoever that was.
Finding it physically impossible to lull herself to sleep, Jaydess finally made the decision to get something to fill her empty stomach.
The house seemed a lot more mysterious to her now that it was dark and Miss Charlotte wasn't around.
As she munched on a caramel flavoured cereal bar, Jade decided to venture round the house. In search to find something that might help pass the time.
Shadows were cast along the walls and she had to rely on nothing but the dim moonlight shining though the windows to move around, worried that if she turned on the lights, Miss Charlotte might wake.
Apart from the empty oil can she found on the table, the living room wasn't much different from how it was in the daytime. The white couch was still decorated with a pink knitted blanket and a few red pillows here and there and the glass coffee table stood just as it had always.
In fact, generally the house wasn't much different, that was until she came across an unfamiliar corridor. She thought nothing of it as she approached the dead end, covered by a bookshelf.
She shrugged.
"I guess a book will do," she muttered quietly, picking out a few, reading the blurb then placing them back on the shelf.
It wasn't until the seventh book that she found something rather peculiar. A silver key was hung right behind the book entitled, 'the human invasion'.
Jade furrowed her eyebrows before grabbing it. The metal object was cold and shone in the moonlight. She couldn't help but adore and admire everything about it. It was a simple and old-fashioned key with nothing particularly extravagant or breath-taking about it but just that fact that it was hidden away made Jaydess' heart flutter in ways she didn't think was possible.
Obviously it was of some importance and was meant to be a secret but she still managed to convince herself not to get too excited, she didn't want to build up her hopes on my for them to be crushed.
Placing the book back on the shelf, Jade tiptoed back to her room, staring down at the key in awe.
She was going to find out where the key was from. One way or another.
So sorry for not updating in a while. I feel terrible. I've been so lazy! Forgive me please.
