shortly after the rain kingdom palace is burnt down, making all dragons living there flee. an older rainwing, who is currently unnamed, saved a clutch of eggs and brought them to a grove untouched by the war. when the dragonets hatch, he decides to watch over them until they're all at least 8 years old.

that is, until a sandwing finds the grove and attempts to kill the dragonets. the older rainwing puts up a good fight but, though he chases the sandwing away, dies due to a sting from the sandwing's barbed tail.

the dragonets scatter, and our main character - cocoabean - meets an icewing at the border and, well...
