Galepaw sighed, exhausted as he crept into his nest in the Apprentices' Den. Glancing behind him at the setting sun, the dimming golden light turning the grassy fields yellow, he collapsed into the moss and soon had drifted into sleep.
Suddenly, he was awake.
Galepaw, rather shocked, glanced around him. He was in a field full of tall grass, dappled with sweet-smelling flowers and laden with the scent of fresh prey. What is this place..?
"Why, hello."
Galepaw spun around to see who had spoken.
A snowy-white she-cat stood about three fox-lengths away, smiling with a warm glow in her yellow eyes that reminded Galepaw of the sun. He blinked, observing the cat for a few moments before speaking.
"Who are you?"
"Why, I am Whitefeather. Don't tell me your Clanmates haven't told you about me?" The she-cat looked shocked, her tail curling.
"...No, I don't believe they have." Galepaw took a few steps closer.
"Well, I figure I should tell you about myself here then." She began, flicking an ear, "I am a mentor of sorts. I seek out the best of the best and hope to improve your skills even more. I come from a place far from StarClan or the Dark Forest, one no Clan cat has roamed before. Only us spirits."
"Improve my skills..?" Galepaw murmured, intruiged by this strange she-cat and her words.
"Why, yes! Though you exceed in battle, I can't help but notice your denmate Wrenpaw seems to be the best hare-catcher. Am I wrong?" Whitefeather's sweet tone never faltered, not once.
"Yes, she is. And she's always rubbing in everyone's faces, too! Whenever she returns from a hunt she starts bragging about how slow the rabbits were that day, and how dumb any cat who couldn't catch them must be!" Galepaw replied, padding closer to Windfeather.
"Oh dear, she seems just awful. Well, I can help you improve your hare-catching abilities so even Wrenpaw will be envious." The odd mentor offered, tail swishing in the plant fronds.
"Yes! Yes! Please show me!" Galepaw gasped, jumping on his paws. The thought of seeing Wrenpaw, watching him, full of jealousy...
"Alright then. But first, we must make a deal. It's nothing huge, just a small favor in turn for my hunting knowledge." Said Windfeather.
Galepaw nodded immediately, "Yes, I will do anything to make Wrenpaw jealous!"
"I only ask for you to keep our meetings private. Your Clanmates may know about me, but you don't want Wrenpaw trying to stop you from seeing me, now do you?"
"No, I would hate that! I can definitely do that, Whitefeather."
"Lovely. Now, let our training begin..."
// TWO MOONS LATER \\
Galepaw had met with Whitefeather every night since the first time he found out about her. He now excelled at hunting, and he enjoyed the sight of Wrenpaw's envious face whenever they crossed paths.
But recently, a new apprentice named Pebblepaw was growing better at battle training.
And now, Galepaw was just beginning to slip off into dreamland to meet with the miracle-working she-cat.
"Whitefeather?" He called out, as soon as he awoke in the meadow.
"Ah, Galepaw!" The fluffy white she-cat was soon standing in front of him, the same smile gracing her features.
"Will I be learning more on hunting? Wrenpaw is so jealous of me, it's wonderful! I'm the best rabbit-catcher in all four Clans combined!" Galepaw boasted.
"That's wonderful, Galepaw!" Whitefeather purred, "But I can't help but notice, your eyes don't have the same sparkle in them today. Has somebody become better than you?"
"Yes, actually. That new apprentice Pebblepaw thinks he's so amazing, when all he can do is preform the duck-and-roll a little better than I!" Galepaw huffed.
"Well, I can fix that right up! I can teach battle as well." Whitefeather offered, eyes gleaming.
"Oh yes, that would be great!" Chirped Galepaw, the apprentice curling his tail happily.
"Wonderful. Let us begin."
// TWO MOONS LATER \\
Galefang purred as he entered the Warriors' Den. He had just been given his warrior name, and he couldn't wait to tell Whitefeather.
But when he awoke in his dreams, the familiar snowy-white cat was nowhere to be found.
"Whitefeather? Whitefeather!" He yowled. The meadow seemed much freakier without her bright smile and glittering eyes.
Suddenly, she had appeared, and Galefang immediately felt all worry seep from his body.
"I got my warrior name! I'm Galefang now!" Galefang boasted, chest puffing out in pride.
"That's a lovely name!" Whitefeather purred, then continued, "Say, Galefang, what makes you visit me tonight? You are a warrior now, after all."
"Well... though I'm a warrior, I wanted your help. Y'see, this cat called Redtooth keeps shoving her tail in my face and glaring at me! I don't know what I did!"
"Alright, Galefang. The problem will be fixed by dawn."
Galefang tilted his head, confused. She had never given that answer before.
// THE NEXT DAY \\
Galefang yawned as he left his den, surprised to see his Clanmates all gathered together in the middle of camp; even their leader, Ashstar.
"What's goi-" Galefang cut himself off as he got a look at what everyone was staring at.
Redtooth's corpse, with his throat torn and his windpipe ripped out.
Whitefeather's words rang in his head.
"The problem will be fixed by dawn."
