Dear diary
Today was an early start as usual, the lads and I had just been woken up by General Richard Haking (screaming as usual, frankly I'm surprised how he still has his voice), James-who was sleeping next to me doesn't seem to enjoy the soldier lifestyle because whenever we chat he complains for coon's age about how they're trying to work us to death with all of the early mornings. We had a long track ahead of us we have to walk the 20 odd kilometres to the front where well set up. General Haxing wasn't in the mood for me to enjoy my corned beef on the way though, as myself and James got caught up in our conversation and got shoved forward by him, causing me to spill my breakfast all over the ground. Food is food, so I picked up my dixie tin and put my now sullied breakfast back in to finish on the march. Around 1200 hours we were told that at 1800 we will be attempting to prevent the Germans from reinforcing their troops by securing their frontline and pushing forwards from there. The British are also assisting with this as they have been intensifying their fire against the Germans in order to weaken them.

He's dead. We probably lost 2 battalions. I couldn't even retreat back to the trenches without tripping over numerous friends. That wasn't the worst of it. The stench of war. The ground unseen under all the brass from bullet casings. I tripped and although a few hours ago I brushed the earth off food in order to eat my breakfast, I now just stared at the crimson and gold blend that the earth had become. Admiring the beauty of it, but paralysed at the same time. Those colours, those colours that used to contain life, those colours that are forever burned into my memory and never shall they be forgotten.
I got back to the trenches. No laughter. No banter about the general and early mornings, just silence. We all stared at each other and spoke without words, without sounds, without movement. Just wishing for the war to end, wishing we had never joined the army.
I'm about to doze off for the night but I can't help my thoughts from wandering to dinner. It was awfully quiet without James there to tell jokes to lighten the mood and share a durry with. I remember at training where James couldn't stop making banter about the General, even during drills he couldn't remain serious for long. War didn't tarnish his optimism, I can't say the same for myself. I give a final puff of my cigarette and decide to try to get some form of sleep.

Liebes Tagebuch (Dear Diary)
I'm assisting the Lieutenant Colonel with assigning the new reinforcement troops that arrived that very week. Keeping in mind that earlier that day the British had warned of a possible attack from the Australians and now there was some form of preparations happening just passed no man's land so we'll need more men on the frontline, prepared for anything. Lieutenant tells me that I can go have breakfast and send over someone else to help him. Whilst grabbing my tin, Robert comes over and start complaining about the hours saying that "Did that mongrel kick you in the guts to get you up this morning too?". I wish I could say no, making myself look above Robert. But my ribs were in too much pain. After yesterday and being on watch last night it was hard to get up. I swear I have a broken rib on either side but its not worth mentioning. So, to answer Robert – Yes, he did.

Liebes Tagebuch (Dear Diary)
We won. Although my arms are scarred from the days battle. The relentless loading of ammunition into the machine guns. Running between positions to distribute more ammunition. Being on station slaying the enemy where they stood behind my Bergman MG15. Although its relatively new, it was my friend today. Robert came waling over, with more of a spring in his step than yesterday, cigarette with a smile on his face. We're not going to say it but we hope that we'll be home before winter. He grinned at me "Game of
Mensch Aergere Dich Nicht?" Of course, I need to win back the marks I lost last game.
I ended up losing more, but we shared some laughs, and had a drink to end it all off, w
puff of our cigarettes and decide to pack up for the night.
Josef
