Art trade
This was an art trade the TheJadeLioness on DeviantArt. I had a lot of fun with it.
I experimented a lot with a mixture of vibrant colors and cross hatching and I decided I would explain my process, because it's actually very similar to the one I use for digital art. It's also pretty simple.
I'm only going to show the coloring process. First, I pre-tone the areas lightly and shade very generally. This helps to achieve bright, new, original colors by mixing what I already have.
Then I add markings and get the right color of fur. End zone is white, so I he just needed the pre-toning. I have to be careful with jade, because her fur is darker, meaning I need to press harder with my pencil to get the right shade. Since I have prisma colors, which are oil-based, I can only add so many colors on her before the paper won't take any more color.
Now I'm adding more shading and defining more features. Im using a river blue to shade, but you could use any color. I highly suggest avoiding black, gray or brown though. They will kill your picture and they look like boring crap. I've also started adding a bright pink backlight on endzone.
Now I'm gently adding bright pink cross hatching, avoiding highlighted or backlights areas. I think this adds a lot of visual interest and texture. When on the computer, I love doing this with vibrant highlights.
Finally, I add a bit of turquoise blue, especially around the darkest areas and right next to the back light, and a scribbly pink shadow with navy at the darkest points.
This is definitely optional, but I tweaked the colors a bit in my photoshop app. I usually do this with black and white pictures to add some interesting colors and effects.
