The First Chuunin Exam. Chapter 27

Dedication the same as per-normal!!!

Chapter 27

I tapped my pencil on the table as others sat down around me as well, trying to find their chair. My eyes widened when I saw that Gaara next me. He looked at me as I was still tapping my pencil. I waved with one hand, before looking back towards the front. Naruto was sitting down near the front, I winced. Poor Naruto. But I smiled when I saw Hinata was next to him. We were surround by chuunin… I think. In the same uniform. I guess its standard exam uniform.

“You’re not as strong as you think,” Gaara said out of the blue. I looked back with my eye brow raised. “Those girls. Took you down,” I snorted.

“So? Their taijutsu is better than mine and their ninjutsu and genjutsu too, but my Art and speed will be enough to take them down. And there was three against one, and had they agenda towards me, I don’t have one against them. also, isn’t it ninja code to never put show all of your abilities in front of everyone? I was smart and I didn’t fight back,” I stated with a shrug and I heard a scoff. I looked and I saw that Rikku was next to me. I chuckled nervously.

“You rely on those explosives too much. And it will be your down fall,” She sneered at me, and I rolled my eyes. “And you’re not fast,” then I snorted at that.

“We’ll see, old friend,” She glared at me for that. I rolled my eyes.

I looked behind me and I saw that Yumi was sitting next to Sakura. I winced. Ouch, two people who hate me, sitting next to each other. That’s not good.

Then I saw Sasuke in the back. He caught my eyes… well, eye one was covered by my scope. I waved with a twiddle of my fingers. He nodded once, before looking away from me.

I saw Rin too, she was glaring at me. I sighed before looking at the front. As Ibiki tapped the board with chalk.

“The First Exam has a few important rules,” Rules? Isn’t this like any other exam? “I will not accept any questions, so listen carefully,” He faced the black board and started to write on it. “First rule is you all are given 10 points at the start. The written exam consists of 10 questions and each is worth one point. This test is a deduction based test. If you get one problem wrong,” He finished writing on the board before facing us again. “You will get one point deducted. If you get three problems wrong, your points will be reduced to 7,” I read the board quickly. It’s just what he just said.

Alright, that’s weird. But we’re ninja, I guess we’ve got to expect the unexpected. The ninja world is strange.

“Second rule,” Ibiki said, after letting us understand what he just said. “The pass-fail decision will be determined by your team’s total points,” my jaw dropped.

Rikku’s hand shot up. he glared at her. “There’s a team of four though, are they getting special treatment or something?” She pointed out and he glared at her.

“I said no questions. We’ve taken that into consideration, and have it under control, so don’t worry about it. If anything their going to have a handy-cap in this whole thing,” He snapped at her. I bit my lip to stop my laughing.

“Your team’s total points? What?!” Sakura shouted, ignoring what he just said.

“Shut up! There is a reason for this. So just shut up and listen,” I looked at Sakura and her head dropped a little in embarrassment. “Now that you know, let’s move on to the next rule,” Joy oh joy, more rules.

“If an examiner determines that you cheated or do something similar during the test. Each action will cause you to lose two points. In other words, there will be people who will be forced to leave this place without their tests being graded,” my head turned to the examiners on the far side. One caught my eye and smirked. Doing the ‘I’m watching you’ sign. My head snapped forward. Weirdo. “Those who try to cheat without thinking carefully will only hurt themselves.”

“We’ll “check” you at any time,” a chuunin smirked at us as he spoke. I took a breath and kept myself calm.

“You are all trying to become chuunins. If you are a ninja, act like a first-rate one,” okay, I guess Sasuke, Sakura and I are going to have to do really good on this, for Naruto’s sake. Because I know that he isn’t going to do all that well. “Also, if anyone in a team gets a zero, everyone on that team will fail,” my jaw dropped again.

My eyes went to Naruto right away. He was hugging himself around the waist shaking a little. I knew Sasuke and Sakura were glaring at Naruto, I had to force myself not to. Sakura even shouted out in shock. Naruto, you have to get one right!

“The last problem will be given 45 minutes after the exam begins. You have one hour for the exam,” the clock in the room was slowly ticking to the 12 when it hit 12 Ibiki yelled. “Begin!”

I flipped over m exam, along with everyone else in the room. I wrote down my name, and I added a little ‘art is fleeting’ for the fun of it before reading the first question. Eh, what? A cipher… okay. I’ll come back to that one. The second one is… the parabola, B, represents a shuriken’s maximum throwing distance of the enemy ninja, A, from a height of 7 metres. Figure out the trait of the enemy ninja that can be observed from the ellipse formed by the shuriken, and figure out the maximum throwing distance on flat ground. Explain your reasoning.

My eye brow’s furrowed as I read the rest of the questions. They too were like the first and second ones. What Jashin’s name is this?!

I can’t do any of these… questions. If it can be called that! Their like, killer questions or something. No one here could do these things.

There has to be something to this. That wouldn’t give us an exam that no one can do in here. My head moved from looking at the sheet and I looked at the roof and I took a deep breath and I let it out. There has to be a trick to this.

I heard writing over to the side. I looked over and I saw a Chuunin. Someone was cheating? The Chuunin looked up and his eyes caught mine. He smirked at me, and my eyes narrowed. What is this test?!

I put my elbows on the table, and I rested my head in my hands. Come on Emiko, your smart. You can do this!

I heard a snicker. I looked and I saw Rikku smirking at me. “Your useless without your ‘art’,” She sneered at me, my eyes narrowed at her.

I have to show her I’m not useless! My eyes went to the bored. I re read what Ibiki had wrote. This test is like, trying to make us cheat. This whole deduction thing… is stupid. You usually have to earn points, not already start with them. And the cheating thing. If you cheat and get caught once, you usually are kicked out. No questions asked and your tests are not graded. You don’t get 5 chances to cheat.

Wait. Back up. No one can figure the questions out. There are points to begin with, not earned. We can cheat but don’t get caught. THAT’S IT!! They want us to cheat. Ibiki said. ‘If you are a ninja, act like a first-rate one’ a ninja, when trying to get information doesn’t get caught. It could be fatal.

I smirked. I’ve got it. One of my hands slipped to my scope. I had to make sure I still looked like I was stressing out, when I was really making my scope zoom in. I sat up straight and I removed my hand from the scope. I looked around. With my normal eye. I saw that other people were writing.

Okay, if they wanted us to cheat, there would be people to cheat off. They wouldn’t make us cheat without people to cheat off.

I looked around the room carefully, but not to seem like I was cheating… hopefully. I saw some people were doing this with confidence. A bit too much confidence. I smirked when I realised he was in front of me. This person also had a chakra signature too high for a Genin…

I brushed my hair back, but also adjusting the zoom on it, so I could read the answers.

When everything was set, I started to write too making sure to get the right answers. When I finished that my scope zeroed in onto some sudden movement. I looked, and I saw that a chuunin had thrown a kunai! It went straight passed Naruto and it the table behind Naruto.

The person who paper was hit, stood up, and yelled. “What is the meaning of this?!”

The Chuunin who had thrown the kunai just smirked and said. “You screwed up five times. You fail.”

The genin froze in shock, leaning back a bit. “What?” He muttered, still in shock.

The Chuunin pointed at the genin and said. “Teammates of his get out of here! Right now,” the genin’s temmates stood up not looking very happy before they headed to the door. The Genin was shaking, before he forced himself out of room, following his teammates.

After that show, numbers were called out. Someone had to be dragged out, screaming no. I snickered. What a baby, grow up, you can do the exam another time.

When one number was called, the person stood up in anger. A sand ninja by the looks, and he slammed a hand on the table. “Hey, man, do you have any proof that I cheated five times?! Are you really able to watch over this many people?” they shouted at the chuunin who called his number. I guess he had a point. The chuunin had bandages wrapped around his head, and over his eyes.

Suddenly, the sand Genin was up again the wall the chuunin had his elbow holding him to the wall. The Genin glared at the Chuunin.

“Listen up. We are Chuunins that were chosen for this exam. Elites, so to say. We won’t miss a single thing you do,” I raised my hand and I heard the Chuunin chuckle. “Number 67, put your hand down,” I dropped my hand with a smirk on my face. “My strength is the proof, and that little test number 67 did,” The chuunin dropped the sand nin. He fell to the ground.

The sand genin and his team walked out. The Chuunin headed back to his chair, but going passed me. He ruffled my hair. I frowned at him. He chuckled before he got to his seat and sat down.

I rolled my eyes and I looked at Gaara as he did his thing, he made a sand eye thing, before crushing it. I felt sand in my eye, without the scope. I slapped my eye and I blinked a few times. My eyes went straight to Gaara. He looked at me when he saw my movement.

“Watch t with your sand, will you, un,” I muttered to him, rubbing my eye again. He didn’t make a noise.

I looked away from him and then to Rikku. Who was doing her answers. I don’t know how though. Most likely threw her triplet connection thing. And she says that I rely on my art to must, well, she relay’s on her sisters too much.

I heard the Kankuro asking for the bathroom and one of the chuunin’s had to accompany him. My scope though said that it wasn’t a real person, it was a puppet. The chakra is the same as Kankuro’s and didn’t have enough for a chuunin.

I chuckled quietly. Making Gaara and Rikku both look at me. I just shook my head at them. Rikku scoffed and looked down at her paper, reading threw it. Heh. Gaara was just finishing writing it up.

Out of the blue, Ibiki called out. “Looks like we’ve already dropped the incompetent ones. I will now give the problem,” I looked up towards Ibiki. Rikku and Gaara doing the same beside me, Ibiki’s eyes were closed “Since 45 minutes have already passed,” His eyes snapped open. “Okay, I will now give the 10 problem!”

Everything went silent around us, letting it settle in that this was the last one. “Yes, but before that, there’s one thing I must say. There will be a special rule for this last question,” I sighed. More rules? Seriously? Is this guy a rule book?

I looked behind me as my scope detected someone entering the room. It was Kankuro. And his puppet. I think. He froze at the door way.

Ibiki chuckled once, before talking. “You’re lucky. Your puppet show didn’t have to go to waste,” I slapped a hand to my mouth, to stop the giggles. So they did notice it. They’re not that incompetent then. Everyone had looked back to Kankuro at that. Kankuro froze at Ibiki’s words. “Oh well, sit down,” Ordered Ibiki.

Kankuro listened and headed to his chair. Ibiki stepped forward, looking at everyone. “I will now explain. This is a… hopeless rule,” my eyes narrowed. Hopeless? Why? “First, you are all going choose if you wish to take this tenth problem or not.”

My eyes narrowed again. Why wouldn’t we want to take the exam? Something doesn’t seem right here…

“Choose? So what happens if we don’t take the tenth problem?” Temari asked in confusion. It seems I wasn’t the only one who was confused.

“If you choose not to take it, your points will be reduced to zero, in other words, you will fail. Your other teammates will fail along with you,” Okay, then everyone will take it then if that’s the choice.

Temari spoke up again. “What’s the meaning of that?” She asked of him. “Of course we’re going to choose to take it!” She exclaimed in annoyance.

Ibiki closed his eyes. “And here is the other rule. If you choose to take it and you get it wrong…. you will… Lose the privilege to take the Chuunin Exam forever!” He exclaimed, his eyes snapping open in the effect.

“EH?!” I exclaimed dropping my head onto the table in shock, making a huge thump ring threw the air.

“What kind of dumb rule is that?!” Kiba shouted, Akumaru barking with his master. I looked up and I saw he was standing, pointing at Ibiki. “There should be those here who have taken the CHuunin Exam in the past!” Kiba pointed out.

That’s right! Kabuto is one of them. My eyes went to Ibiki, waiting for the answer. Ibiki started to chuckle evilly at Kiba’s words. Smirking when he finished.

“You were unlucky. This year, I am the rule,” he told us. My hands clentched. “That’s why I gave you the option of quitting. Those who are not confident can choose not to take it, and take the exam next year, of the year after that. Those who will not be taking this tenth question, raise your hands. After we confirm your numbers, we will have you leave,” He started to chuckle again. So, if I say I don’t want to do this, Naruto, Sakura and Sasuke will have to leave too. If we take it, and we get it wrong… then that’s it? We’re stuck as Genin? Now that’s not fair.

But then… there should be other ways to become chuunin, I know there is. They wouldn’t hold us back if we show that we can be better than Genin. Plus, if this was a mission, we couldn’t back out because we don’t like it. We have to keep with it. We have to do the mission. Like in the land of waves!

I frown turned into a confident smirk. Everything will be fine. If push comes to shove. I’ll help Naruto cheat… actually. I should have done that in the first place. Heh heh.

When I came to this conclusion. I saw that people had quit. They couldn’t handle the pressure by the looks. Heh, not real ninja if that’s true. They were dropping like flies.

I looked next to me and I saw that Gaara was fine, and then Rikku. She was shaking? My eyes softened and I rested my hand on her shoulder, she jerked it back. And she glared at me, while I smiled at her.

“Don’t give up. If this was the real world. Just because we find something hard we couldn’t just back out. We’d just have to get through it with a smile, and don’t back down,” I told her. Her eyes widened in shock at my words.

“Wha- what?” I chuckled at her. “But, why would you tell me this? Shouldn’t you be hoping that me and my sisters would drop out? I am wishing you will,” Rikku stated and I laughed once.

“Nope! You were my only friend once a upon a time. I wouldn’t let you back out, like you didn’t let my mother’s insaneness affect me. You may hate me, but I don’t hate you. I may dislike you for bad mouthing my art though,” She cracked a smile at that. “But, if you drop out now. I think Yumi and Rin would flip out, right?” I asked, and she nodded her head in agreement.

“Yeah, Rin, Yumi and I all want the chance to kill you,” I snorted at that, waving my hand once at that.

“Like you could, I’m going out in bang,” I told her and she laughed once.

“Still the same, Emiko,” I nodded my head at her. She frowned at me. Rin or Yumi were talking to her in her head if I remember that look right. She glared at me before looking away. I raised my eye brows at that. Alright then… weirdo.

I heard a snort from her and I looked forward…. Naruto’s hand is in the air!! My eyes were widened. What! Then he slammed it onto the table. I jumped.

“Screw you! I’m not going to run away! I’ll take this problem! Even if I become a Genin forever, I’m going to become a Hokage no matter what anyway!” Naruto shouted with all his might. My face broke out in a grin.

I fist pumped. “Yeah, we will never let our dreams be crushed by an idiot who wouldn’t know the difference between a C3 and a C1!” I yelled, joining in with Naruto.

We both stood up, with pour hands on the tables, glaring at Ibiki. “I’m not scared!” Naruto yelled after me.

“I won’t let you in my head that easily!” I growled. Naruto and I both sat down. Naruto crossed his arms and I did too. Both looking strong in our arguments.

Ibiki looked at us, with something weird in his eyes before talking. “I will ask one more time. This is the choice that will impact your life. If you want to quit, now is the chance.”

I rolled my eyes and I smirked at him. “I’m not going to take back my words. That’s my ‘ninja way’,” Naruto stated, and I nodded my head once.

“Neither am I, I know your game, and it’s not going to work,” I called him out. Ibiki’s eyes dropped to me and I smirked. His eyes narrowed on me.

Then his frown turned into a smirk as he looked over everyone else. He looked over at the chuunin’s I followed. They were smirking and smiling at Ibiki nodding their head. Why are they nodding their heads?

Ibiki looked back to us. “Nice determination. Then…” he was trying to freak us all out. I don’t think that will happen now. “For the first exam, everyone here PASSES!” He exclaimed.

My jaw dropped, as my eye started to twitch. No way… we all pass… was my theory right? I face palmed.

Many people’s pencils dropped onto the table. Before Sakura yelled. “Wait, what’s the meaning of that? We pass already? What about the tenth question?”

I looked back and I saw that she was standing up. I rolled my eyes, before looking back to the front.

Ibiki smiled at Sakura. And my whole body shivered. This guy should never smile. He looks like a pedo! “There was no such thing to begin with. Of you can call the two-choice question the tenth question,” he told us.

“Ibiki sensei! You shouldn’t smile!” I shouted, and he stopped smiling and looked at me. “It’ll almost be as powerful as my look,” Naruto’s whole body stiffened at that. I snickered at him. Ibiki looked confused. I smirked.

“What, hey!” Temari started. “So what were those previous nine problems?! It was all a waste!” Temari exclaimed in anger and annoyance.

Ibiki looked away from us and to the window. “No it’s not. The nine problems accomplished their purpose,” He looked back at us. “The purpose to test each individual’s information gathering skills,” that was obvious.

“Information gathering skills?” Temari questioned Ibiki.

Ibiki sighed before talking. “First, this test’s purpose lies in the first rule. Your pass-fail decision is based on your three person teams. By giving that idea, we have given you an unprecedented amount of pressure to try and not be a nuisance to your team.”

Naruto nodded his head a few times. “Yes, yes, I was kind of sensing that in this test,” Naruto stated. I shook my head at him fondly.

Ibiki continued like Ibiki never said anything. “But these test problems cannot be solved by you genins,” I snickered. Tell that to Sakura! “So, most of the people here must have come to the conclusions,” Ibiki raised his hand a little. “’I have to cheat to get points.’ In other words, this exam assumed that everyone was going to cheat. So, we snuck in two chuunins who knew the answers to be targets of cheating,” the chuunin’s raised their hand up in the air. Smiling at their job well done.

Naruto flipped out. I snickered at his face before he gained composure, trying to look lay back with his arms behind his head.

“Heh heh, it was so obvious. It would be weird not to notice it,” So, you’re weird Naruto? I knew that. He looked at Hinata. “Right Hinata?” He asked of her. I snickered.

Gaara and Rikku looked at me. I shook my head before looking back at Sasuke. he looked over at me. I mouth the words. So, Naruto’s weird? He smirked at me before I turned and looked at Ibiki yet again.

Ibiki coughed once, to get everyone’s attention again. “But those who just cheated like a fool failed, of course,” he explained, as he untied his forehead proctor that was covering the top of his head. my eyes widened at the sight of it. “Why? Information can have greater value than life at times, and in missions and battlefields,” his whole head… was covered in scars, burns and… are they holes? “Information is contested with the lives of people.”

“How awful… burnt marks, screw holes and cut marks. They’re the scars of torture,” Sasuke pointed out, Ibiki smirked at that.

Ibiki put his forehead protector back on, and tied it up. “The information that an enemy gets after being noticed by a third person will not necessarily be accurate,” His arms dropped to his side as he looked forward. “Remember this. Getting incorrect information can cause great damage to your teammates and village. So, we made you all gather information in the form of cheating. We kicked out those who were lacking in that field. That’s what went on,” He explained to us, my head nodded in understanding.

“That’s really smart,” I muttered under my breath, so no one heard me besides the people beside me.

“But I still can’t agree to that last question,” Temari pointed out. My eye twitched. I looked at Garaa, he looked at me.

“Is she always like that? We passed who cares what else happened?” I asked and he nodded his head once. I sighed. “Temari!” Everyone looked at me. “It’s simple. The tenth question, if you really want one is the question he asked. ‘To quit, and try again another time, or stay, and go through with it!’ think! Seriously!” I snapped. Everyone was quiet. I crossed my eyes.

“The Konoha ninja is right. The tenth question was the main question of this First Exam!” Ibiki exclaimed.

“What do you mean?” Sakura asked. I dropped my head in annoance. Wh can’t everyone just let it be?

Ibiki put his hands in his pockets. “Let me explain. The tenth question, as the Konoha ninja said. Was the take or not take choice. Needless to say, it was a painful two-choice problem. Those who did not take it failed with their teams. If you chose to take it, and could not answer it. Your right to take the exam would have been taken away forever. It was a very insincere problem,” Ibiki started to walk a bit. “Now about this two-choice problem,” He faced us yet again. “Let’s assume that you have become a chuunin. Your mission is to capture a secret document. The number of enemy ninja, their abilities, and armaments are unknown. And there may be traps that the enemy ninja have set up. Now, will you accept this mission of not?”

Well duh, you have to. It’s for your village. You’re a tool for your village and that’s it.

“Bust because your life and the lives of your teammates may be in danger, are you able to avoid dangerous missions? The answer is…” Ibiki trail off.

“No,” I muttered as he said no as well. Ibiki continued on. “There are missions that carry heavy risks, but cannot be avoided. The ability to show your courage to your teammates when needed and the ability to get through a bad situation. That is what we look for in a chuunin, a squad leader. Those who cannot bet their fate in a critical situation. Those who give up when given the chance because there is a next time, and let their minds sway over an uncertain future. Fools who only carry a light determination like that have no right to become a chuunin. That is what I believe. I am saying that you here who have chosen to take it gave the right answer for the difficult tenth question. You can deal with the difficulties you will face. You have broken through the entrance. The First Exam of the chuunin selection ends now. I wish you luck,” He smiled a small smile. Not that creepy smile like before.

I smiled at the man before looking at Rikku. “Good luck, Rikku. You may hate me for something I didn’t do, but you’re still my friend,” I told her. She looked at me in shock.

She was about to say something, but Naruto cut her off by yelling. “Alright! Wish us luck!” He cheered. I snickered at him. He started jumping around in his seat. “Alright, alright! Yeah, yeah!” He shouted. I rolled my eyes at him.

“Naruto!” He looked at me. “Quiet,” his jaw snapped shut, “Sit,” He sat down. “Good Naruto,” He crossed his arms. I smirked. Mother hen mood works every time.

Suddenly, my scope detected sudden movement. My head moved as a ball smashed into a window. My eyes widened in shock along with everyone else. Two kunai’s flew out from the ball, pulling open the ball and a person landed on the ground, as the kunais hit the roof. I saw a sheet behind the person, tied to the kunais.

I blinked a few times, before I dropped my head to the table. Naruto yelled out in shock.

I brought my head up again and I saw a lady. My eye twitching at her. Sometimes… I’m embarrassed to be apart of this village when there’s people like this here.

“Everybody, there’s no time to be happy!” the Lady shouted. She flung her arm to the side as her other hand was in her pocket. “I am the Second Examiner, Anko Mitarashi! Let’s go to the next exam!” She yelled with a passion. She fist pumped. “Follow me!”

Alright, she’s passionate… like I am with my art!

Ibiki popped his head out from behind the sheet. “Grasp the atmosphere,” Ibiki told her.

She glared back at him before looking at all of us. Ibiki stepped forward. “82? Ibiki you let 27 teams’ pass?” She asked Ibiki in shock… or annoyance. “The First Exam must have been too soft.”

Ibiki just looked at Anko. “It looks like there are a lot of excellent students this time.”

Anko looked back as us with a smirk on her face. “Oh, well… I’m going to make more than half of the teams fail in the next exam,” She stated.

A chill went down my spine at the look in her eyes. They looked so… deadly.

“Fail, more than half?” Sakura asked in shock.

“Heh, I’m getting excited,” I don’t think it’s a good thing that she’s excited. Not at all. “I will explain the details tomorrow. We will go somewhere else, so ask your Jounin teachers about the rally point and time. That is all! Dismissed!” She ordered us.

I got up, and when Gaara moved out of his chair and into the hall way, I followed and I went passed him and to Naruto from where he waited for Sasuke, Sakura and I.

When the other two got to our side, we all walked out of the room. Not talking… well, Naruto was talking, but I was tense. I could feel the glares of four people. I looked over my shoulder; I saw Yumi, Rin, Rikku and Gaara all glaring at me.

I looked forward with a sigh.

“Emiko!” someone called to me from behind me when we exited the Academy. I turned around, my team following doing the same. It was Rin. She was glaring up a storm. “Remember, we will kill you for what you did. You murder,” I rolled my eyes. My hand went to my clay.

“Take it up with my brother, not me, yah,” I called back, before I turned around and I continued walking.

My hands clenched at them. Why can’t they believe me?
