Drawing Chara! (Undertale- guide)

You know, Ive made four art books on wattpad and Ive never showed you guys how I draw! So today I decided to attempt to show you guys the guild lines of the way I make art. Im gonna do it with Chara since Im familiar with her design and you guys seem to adore her in my art style for some reason. Also Im better with teaching and drawing female anatomy then male. Anyways lets get started!

Step 1- Sketch with shapes

This part is where I draw simple sketchy shapes so I can decide the placement of the character. I use a circle to show the placement of the head and lines to show where facial features go. I use ovals to decide the width of the arms and legs and where they bend. Then the torso is where things change. I use different shapes to determine the width of the character. If they are chubby i tend to use more circles. If their skinny I use more curvy moon shapes. Since Chara is more skinny and curvy theirs a lot of moons. Then the two lines going through the upper chest decide the placement of breasts.

Step 2- Head sketch

This part is more self explanatory. I simply draw the head of the character and facial features. Depending on how red the characters cheeks are they can be represented by circles and lines (very red) , three lines (slightly blushed), or nothing at all. And of corse the eyes determine the characters expression or the characters age if their female. She will have short eyelashes if she's 12+

Step 3- Underwear layer

Here is where I draw the characters body according to the shapes and lines presented. I also do light sketches of undergarments sometimes depending on what Im drawing. But for the sake of the guide Im just gonna include it. Also here I adjust the head to fit the body and preparation of the character.

Step 4- Cloths

Here I draw the cloths on the character with a different color by changing the opacity of the underwear layer. I just simply draw over it. When Im done, I once again adjust the head to the changes

Step 5- Complete sketch

Here I remove the Shape and Underwear layer. I also turn the cloths layer black and outline some details that are needed from the underwear layer (ex: hands, legs, neck, etc.) I adjust some issues I notice with the sketch and try and clean up the lines a bit

Step 6- line art

I now outline my sketch using a pen tool for the normal lines, and a brush tool for the smaller lines that show small details. I also fix up some things I feel looked good in the sketch but not the line art. As well as that Ill include some more details in places I didn't do originally (ex: Chara's skirt) After that I duplicate the lines to make them thicker and easier to use the bucket tool on.

Step 7- Color

Their really isn't much to this step. I use Chara's color palette to color her. If the lines sometimes show white spots, I simply color them in. I'll also add blush affects depending on the character

Step 8- Eyes

This is the most important step in coloration and detail. For my art style at least. Since the eyes on my art style are the most expressional thing on the entire character they must be done with care and love. For if I don't or I mess up, the entire picture will look dead/ lifeless. When your a cartoony or anime artist this is your worst nightmare. So I am very careful with this. Also for addition detail sometimes Ill include some extra design within the eye depending on the character. For example, I draw small hearts in Chara's eyes since thats her symbol in the game and her compassionate personality.

Step 9- Shading and lighting

First I hide the colors and just leave the lineart. Then I imagine where the light would be and color the places it wouldn't be hitting in black. After, I duplicate the shading twice and blur one of them. I then bring the colors back and press a button labeled 'Overlay'. That results in the black adjusting itself to the colors and making them darker. It makes the shading and the over all picture more colorful. I do the same thing with lighting except I use white and color the places where light hits. I don't do shading affects on the eyes to make them pop out more

Step 10- Sign and add additional text

Final step I put my signature on my drawing in a red pen tool and add the additional text the picture may need. Example for this one I drew a heart to express an emotion.

And Thats how I draw characters! I hope this helped you with your drawings and it was enjoyable to read! Lemme know if you want more of these in the future and what you think of the drawing. And don't hesitate to ask any questions you may have
