Ninjago fanart (minor spoilers)

obsessed with Lego Ninjago so I'm going to be drawing some art so I can learn to draw humans. I'm thinking one drawing for each episode every week. commentary below each one.

despite the fact that I'm only drawing season 1, the commentary below each image will likely contain some spoilers for later seasons. and if you're new to the show and don't want spoilers for season 1, I have already revealed the identity of the mysterious green ninja.

here I have Lloyd in season 1 episode 1: Rise of the Snakes. He's getting a tomato thrown at him because he was being a nuisance, trying to sheild his eyes so they don't get tomato juice in them. and I replaced the english 5 on his shirt for a Ninjargon one because I think it makes more sense to have Ninjargon letters and numbers rather than English.

Also, since lego people have black eyes I imagine those are the pupils, which means due to that headcanon Lloyd has green pupils from the redesigns - I have a plan for this but you will notice I gave him black pupils here. I'm going to start drawing him with green pupils once he is revealed to be the green ninja, as though the golden weapons caused them to change colours.

I really like how I drew the tomato splat.

Zane followed a bird.

Why did Zane follow the bird?

Because it danced. *shrugs*

also, I drew fog. I like fog.

(season 1 episode 2: Home)

season 1 episode 3: Snakebit

the beginning of Lloyd lying to himself. he... eats the dark for breakfast?

maybe he eats condensed evil like his dad.

and by Lloyd lying to himself I mean how he usually claims he's fine when he's definitely not.

oh so many details to go over. for one thing, I noticed the lighting in this scene is very green in the show and I wonder whether that was to make it spooky or to foreshadow Lloyd being the green ninja. I also wrote in ninjargon on the headstone next to Lloyd and I put an N on his map for north because of course a map is going to have a compas thing in the corner, also the ink has bled through to the other side of the map as well so there's a bit of colour there.

also you've probably noticed in this one Lloyd is holding his arms close to himself, I believe that's something people do when they're scared so I drew it.

super proud of the flashlight as well even though it didn't turn out exactly how I wanted it. also accidentally made the hood a bit small but that's fine, I'll keep that in mind as a mistake to avoid next time.

now we come to Zane's vision in season 1 episode 4: Never Trust a Snake. this is how I figured out who the green ninja was. you see, I paid close attention to the eyebrows of characters, and I noticed that the green ninja in Zane's vision didn't have a notch in his eyebrows, so that ruled out Kai and Jay, and Cole and Zane's eyebrows were too thick. it didn't quite look like Nya's eyebrows either. in fact, the only character whose eyebrows matched was Lloyd.

anyway, I gave Lloyd glowing green pupils, and I changed the flame to green because I never felt orange fire really fit this scene at all. Kai can just think that one day he'll be able to make green fire when he becomes the green ninja. which he won't of course.

I also made the falcon look like a grey falcon because the solid dark grey didn't really look like a falcon at all colour-wise. also if its legs and beak look unrealistically shiny, that's because they're made of metal.

Kai is delirious, Jay is preventing Kai from dying, and Zane is pink.

that's about it, really.

also I gave them boots. and of course Zane's are white because while his outfit was dyed pink, you don't really put boots in the wash.

this was very hard. not because of drawing humans as I expected it to, but because of all the layers and like making the hands go over the box while the rest of them was behind it. I struggle a lot with making characters interact with the foreground.

anyway this was the most funny part of season 1 episode 6, and I wanted to draw Wu. I'm really pleased with how I drew his face. I was going to make him bald like in most of the show but I just like how he looks with hair and he has hair in season 11, long enough to put in a braid. also he has way too much white in his design to translate well to my art because I was struggling to make the beard not blend into his clothes, so I changed it to be a bit darker and now it looks grey.

I'm also really proud of how I drew Wu's hands, especially the one on the box.

it was very hard to decide what to draw today but then I realised this episode (season 1 episode 7) features the start of Mystaké's catchphrase. this woman has never heard of anything (she's lying though). I reference this all the time.

at first I was going to draw Zane achieving his true potential but I don't know how to draw shurikens or how much I would want to stylize them, then I decided I'd draw young Garmadon being bitten by the Great Devourer but I don't know how people who aren't me reach down to grab things (I squat and rest one arm on my knees), so I settled on this.

I actually really don't like episode 8 (once bitten, twice shy). I don't exactly know why I just dislike it. anyway here's Pythor being mistaken for a Megamonster Amusement Park mascot.

I also way oversimplified Pythor's design because there are just too many details.
