"Come in" Arnav sighed, in a tone that told Khushi that he was having a hard time keeping his eyes open for long. Khushi entered the room carrying a tray with his black coffee and a few sandwiches arranged neatly on it.
"Khush" Arnav smiled, his eyes lighting up on seeing Khushi standing at the other end of their bed.
Khushi walked up to him, keeping the tray on the bedside table, settled next to her husband.
"Tired?" She asked caressing his face.
Arnav nodded, "It's been a long day." He confessed.
"You can rest after you eat something." Khushi gestured to the tray of food kept on the table and handed him the mug of coffee.
"How is everything?" Arnav asked her.
"Di is fine, She went back to her room just five minutes before you came back. She is going to be fine." Khushi smiled at Arnav, trying to assure him and herself.
The storm will pass.
"How are you Khushi?" Arnav asked softly, his eyes reflecting his concern for his wife.
She was suffering too, just like his sister.
"Me?" Khushi asked surprised
Arnav nodded. "Are you alright?" His tone was so soft, that she felt her eyes fill up with tears.
"What will.. will happen to me Arnav-ji?" Khushi chuckled weakly.
Arnav sighed, "You are human too, Khushi. Everything that has happened has to have an affect on you as well" He said
"I'm fine Arnav-ji." Khushi attempted a weak smile for her husband.
"Doesn't look like that, Your tea cup is in the room, you haven't eaten properly and I know you don't like having your evening snacks alone." Arnav glanced at the cup of tea and a half-eaten sandwich on the coffee table.
Khushi gasped. How could she forget this!!
"I was not feeling-"
"Don't lie Khushi.." Arnav cut her off "Tell me the truth."
Khushi sighed, "Nani-ji had told me not to come in front of Di and I-"
Arnav looked at her shocked, "Nani was surely not serious Khushi."
"She was.." Khushi whispered
"Did she say that?" Arnav asked Khushi while she had her head bowed down.
Khushi didn't say anything.
Arnav held her chin up, "Tell me what did she say?"
"Arnav-ji.."
"Please Khush" Arnav spoke with a hint of desperation.
"At first I thought that she was not seriously saying that, but the next morning I was cutting some fruits for Di and when I went to give the same to her Nani-ji and Mami-ji scolded me for going to her room and later when Di came to sit in the hall I was pushed into my room and told to not come out in front of her." Khushi told him.
"I'm sorry Khushi." Arnav whispered.
"I couldn't go out the whole day and.."
"You should have said something earlier Khushi.. It's been three days!" Arnav stared at her dumbfounded
Khushi sighed "I didn't want to worry you."
"You don't have to pay heed to their words Khushi.. This is your house as well." Arnav said cupping her face.
Khushi looked at him, a tear rolled down her cheeks. "I don't want to make the matters any worse." She said in a thick voice.
"Nothing like that will happen Khushi." Arnav whispered to her.
"It's you talking?" Khushi asked in a tone laced with surprise.
Arnav smiled slightly, "Way out of character isn't it?"
Wasn't he the one who had gone to the very lengths of proposing a contract marriage to the love of his life just so that he could protect his sister from a heartbreak that was inevitable.
"I know.. Its weird and unusual, but you see Di has everyone. Everyone is going to take care of her, make her feel comfortable, do everything it takes for her to come out of her trauma." Arnav explained.
"While you, are dealing with everything single-handedly." Arnav's voice grew gentle.
Khushi was about to say something, but stopped herself.
"I know my family Khushi.. I know they have the tendency to become insensitive to other people's emotions." Arnav said abashedly
Khushi nodded slightly, "Although.."
"Including myself. It seems we all think you're this rock-strong person who can take on to anything and not say a word." Arnav spoke "I know you're strong.. but the strongest of pillars succumb to pressures."
Arnav looked at Khushi with a small smile, his eyes teary as he tried to convey his apologies for everything that happened.
With them
Because of him.
"And I don't want you to break Khushi.. I have broken you so many times in the past.. In so many ways. Now that I think about it, I can't even figure out why I did half the things I did, or said almost all the things I did." He confessed.
It seems it was a day of surprises for Khushi, He had never seen Arnav open up to her like this. The Arnav who had a hard time dealing with emotions, apologies, realizations was openly conveying his regret on his mistakes.
"Arnav-ji.. It's alright. It's perfectly okay. It was all the past. It's no use trying to dig out old graves now." Khushi explained patiently.
Arnav nodded, smiling softly at his wife.
"You have a forgiving heart Khushi. It knows how to find the positive in each and every person, but not every other person like that." Arnav cupped her face affectionately "I promise to protect you and your heart with my life."
Khushi bit her lip, myriads of unbound love and affection were clearly visible in her Arnav-ji's chocolate eyes.
For her!
His reaction to the whole situation was surprising Khushi to no ends, The person Khushi least expected to be on her side was trying to console her, comfort her.. while the family was busy labelling her as their daughter's culprit.
Not that she didn't like how her husband was supporting her. It was a tough time for everyone, not only Anjali and yet only the daughter of the house was being showered with all the attention.
Khushi smiled ruefully, because she was the daughter-in-law and not the actual daughter of the house. The family was sure to treat them differently.
"I feel like it's all my fault." Khushi said in a low voice. "Like I'm the one wrong here."
Arnav held her hands between his own palms, "None of this is your fault Khushi." Arnav said firmly.
"You think so?"
"Yes. You are not wrong and.. and you will not let yourself be punished for something that is not your fault." Arnav told her in a stern manner.
Khushi extracted her hands from her husband's grip, and shook her head lightly.
"In their perspective I am the woman responsible for breaking their daughter's home." Khushi stated quietly.
"Khushi.." Arnav sighed
"I don't want them to say that I've been instigating you for them, I don't want Mami-ji or Nani-ji to blame me again." Khushi said as a few tears rolled down her cheeks.
Arnav held her face between his palms and wiped her tears, while dropping a kiss on both her eyes as he did so.
"Khushi.. Listen to me very carefully, I have never said this before but this house is my property, I have made it with my own blood and sweat for my family, Everything that you see around here.. was brought by me. I am the owner of every single fortune that the Raizadas enjoy till date and being my wife, You have all the right to be anywhere in your house without fail. No one from the family or outsiders have the power to stop or restrict you from doing anything you want, anytime you want." Arnav said firmly
"I have never, even once in the five years from the time AR was established till date claimed my rights over anything, I have never kept record of anything that I have done for my family because they're family and I am obliged to things for them, but if the most important person in my life is not treated by the same family of mine in the way that she deserves, They need to be reminded of a few facts." Arnav spoke solemnly.
Khushi nodded in a trance.
Arnav pulled her in his arms, cradling her head to his chest.
"Tum bahut important ho Khushi.. bahut.. mein nahi dekh sakta tumhe taqleef mein. Tum udaas hoti ho toh bechain rehta hai yeh dil. Tumhaari taqleef nahi dekhi jaati mujhse.. I can't let you be hurt anymore Khushi.. You've had enough to last another few lifetimes. I know.. that unintentionally I might hurt you again, but I need you to know that I will never stop loving you and I will never stop supporting you no matter what the future has in store for us. (You're very important Khushi.. Very.. I can't see you in pain. When you're sad my heart becomes restless, I can't.. see you hurt)" Arnav said determined.
"Thank you Arnav-ji." She mumbled into his chest "Thank you for not abandoning me."
"I would never do that even in my wildest dreams Khushi Kumari Gupta Singh Raizada." Arnav assured her kissing the top of her head.
Arnav led Khushi to the dining table where everyone was sitting about to start their dinner. Nani-ji was serving curry in Anjali's plate when she saw the couple coming towards them hand-in-hand and greet the family.
"Chotte.." Nani looked at her grandson and his wife aghast.
"We are really hungry, What has been cooked?" Arnav asked.
"Aloo-Matar, Moong-Dal and bhindi with Raita. And for desert, Its Badam-ka-halwa" Payal informed her brother-in-law.
"All of which is our Anjali Bitiya's favorite." Mami said proudly.
"Khushi bitiya.. Anjali-"
"Sit Khushi.. Let's eat." Arnav pulled her to sit next to him and served themselves with the food.
"Chotte.." Nani-ji looked at Khushi apprehensively.
"Ji Nani?" Arnav acted oblivious to the tension that he had successfully created in the dining room.
Khushi squirmed in her place feeling all the eyes on her as her hand was being held by her husband below the table so as to stop her from leaving abruptly.
"Chotte.. Anjali is.."
"I can see that Nani. I greeted her when I came to the dining." Arnav said with a smile too big to be real. "Right Di?"
Anjali nodded absently
"Phati-Sadi.. Tum aapan khaana le ke jaao yahaan se, Tumko dikhat nahi ka ke Anjali Bitiya yahaan baithi hai? (Phati-Sadi take your food and go from here, Can't you see that Anjali-Bitiya is sitting here?)" Mami said rather boldly causing Arnav to fume in anger and drown in guilt at the same time.
Only if he had noticed earlier.
"Kyon Mami-ji? (Why Mami-ji?)" Arnav asked with barely restrained anger.
How could his family be so insensitive to his wife's emotions.
"Arnav Bitwa.. Anjali bitiya will feel bad.." Mami fidgeted with her words.
Arnav's hold tightened on Khushi's right hand as she tried to free herself and leave.
"I don't want to hurt you Khushi.. but if you don't stop struggling I might unintentionally end up doing just that." Arnav whispered to her.
"Let it be please." Khushi begged
"No!!" Arnav hissed back.
"What will happen if Khushi leaves? Will the betrayal that Di has received from her scoundrel of a husband not be a thing anymore? Will Shyam suddenly go back to being the chivalrous gentleman that he pretended to be all these years before? Will he start to love Di like he claimed to love her before?" Arnav asked his family
The two ladies flinched, Anjali looked at her brother wide-eyed.
"Chotte.. Anjali is sitting right here!" Nani-ji cried
"SO WHAT!?" Arnav was slowly losing his patience with his family. "She needs to accept the reality that her husband is nothing but a cheating scumbag."
"She deserves a little time doesn't she?" Nani asked defeatedly.
"Look Nani.. The way you are dealing with this situation is not the right approach and you know that." Arnav said calmly. "If Di needs time, she can have it. You, however can't punish another person in the process."
"Nani is not punishing anyone chotte.."
"You have been treating the elder daughter in law of this house like an outcast for three whole days and you think you are not punishing her? Khushi se shaadi ki hai mene.. Khareed kar nahi laaya usse ki usse itna bura bartaav ho iss ghar mein. (Nani.. I have married Khushi and not brought her here to be treated like dirt in this house.)" Arnav said sternly
"This Phati-Sadi has presented the picture with utmost exaggeration to you bitwa." Mami said bitterly
"She needs not tell me anything Mami-ji, I am observant enough to know what is happening around myself. You need to learn to treat your Daughters-in-law right Mami.. or you'll lose your respect in their eyes." Arnav said calmly.
"If you think Khushi's coming in front of Di will be harmful to Di then I will not come in front of her either, because technically I was the one who threw her husband out of this house wasn't I? Besides, I can't leave her alone to deal with everything on her own." He added firmly.
"Chotte.." Nani tried to intervene but Arnav glared at her effectively freezing her in her position.
"You'll leave me alone?" Anjali asked in a low voice.
Arnav smiled slightly, "You have the whole family by your side Di. You are not alone." Arnav reminded her. "Khushi on the other hand has only her husband."
"If I also desert her like everyone else, then I'll never be able to forgive myself." He shook his head
The family lowered their heads, as they heard almost clearly the implication of his words.
They had, indeed treated her badly.
Punished her for no mistake of hers
Left her utterly helpless and alone.
"We're sorry chotte." Nani apologised as realization dawned upon her.
Arnav sighed, a mock of a smile stretched across his face.
"Again, you're directing your apology towards the wrong person Nani." He told her.
Nani looked ashamed. "Khushi bitiya-"
"It's okay Nani.." Khushi answered even before she could voice out her apology.
Arnav smiled at his wife.
So easily melted.
But now.. He was going to make sure no one can take undue advantage of her forgiving nature.
He was going to shield her from everything that could hurt her.
Even his ASR self.
After so long.. A full length One Shot 2.4k words.
Two more exams to go and then.. The stories will start getting updated.
I have a few OS/drabble plots plaguing my mind at the moment so I might pen all of them down first.
What say?
But of course I'll continue the stories as well..
Anyway.. How did you like this OS?
