Lesson With The Doll
Everyone. Everyone. Everyone who reads this OS needs to comment on this shot. It's a request please do that for me.
It was a sunday afternoon, Khushi was busy with the lunch preparations along with Payal and Anjali while Arnav was working on his laptop in the hall.
"Dadda!!" They heard a cry from upstairs causing Arnav to jerk his head up to look at the first landing only to see his daughter rushing to him clutching what looked like one of the dolls he had gifted her a few weeks ago.
"Ashu.. What happened doll??" Arnav crouched in front of Arushi wiping her tears. She sniffed with a nose as red as her mother's.
"What happened to my Jaan?" Arnav asked again
"Bhai boke my babie." Arushi complained showing Arnav the doll in her hand. Its arms ripped out of its body.
Khushi, who had come to the hall hearing Arushi's cry heard her complaining clutching the doll for dear life. That doll, Sarah was Arushi's absolute favourite, Almost like her baby. She had taken such good care of it that it was almost impossible to believe that she was a mere 3 year old.
"Arsh" Khushi called out to her seven year old son who was hiding behind one of the pillars on the first landing "Come downstairs at once."
Arsh obeyed and silently began descending the stairs
Khushi looked down at her daughter who was sniffing "Ashu.. What had happened?" Khushi asked softly.
"I was playing with my barbies when Bhai messed up evything telling me to come and pay with him, I was deshing Sarah sho I refused then he boke my sarah" Arushi complained with a sniff.
Arnav looked at Arsh with a stern face "Why did you do that Arsh?" He demanded.
"I was bored Dadda.. I wanted Ashu to play with me but she was busy with her dolls.. Besides it's just a doll!!" Arsh defended himself
Khushi looked at him surprised "Arsh that's not how you deal with everything. You know how attached Ashu is to her barbie right?" She chided
"It's just a doll Mumma!" Arsh said not liking the way his mumma was scolding him for a mere doll.
"Even if it's a doll, You don't go around breaking dolls if you're bored or you have nothing better to do" Khushi said sternly.
"Mumma.." Arsh whined, not understanding why his mother was making such a big deal out of the matter.
Arnav tried to intervene "Khushi.. It's-"
"Just a minute Arnavji, Let me handle this" Khushi gave him a stern look, Arnav knew better than trying to intervene again and let Khushi take the lead. Khushi made Arsh sit on the couch and crouched in front of him
"Arsh, What does Daddy call Ashu?" Khushi asked softly
"Ashu, Princess & Doll" Arsh answered
"Very good, Now What does Mumma call her?" Khushi asked
"Same.. Jaan, Baccha, Princess, Doll, Ashu" Arsh repeated, confused.
"You call her your doll too. Right Arsh?" Khushi asked
Arsh nodded.
"How will you feel if someone hurts your doll?" Khushi asked, And saw a flicker of fear pass in his eyes as he looked at Arushi who was cuddled up in Arnav's lap while the man himself was keenly observing the exchange between the mother-son duo with his arms wrapped securely around Arushi
"I.. I won't let anyone hurt my doll" Arsh replied confidently. Khushi smiled at her son.
"Then why did you hurt her doll?" Khushi questioned.
Arsh bit his lower lip, "But her doll is non-living" Arsh argued in a low voice.
"Does Arushi treat her dolls like non-living? She does everything, From waking them up, bathing them, changing their clothes, She does everything that I do with her to her dolls, Right?" Khushi explained calmly.
Arsh nodded guiltily, "I'm sorry Mumma"
Khushi felt bad for putting him through this, But she had to do this as it was for his own betterment.
"Can you put the doll back to It's original shape Arsh?" Khushi asked.
"I.. I don't know how to do that." Arsh confessed.
"Let's try shall we?" Arnav took the doll and brought some permanent adhesive and sat beside his son trying to glue the broken arms of the doll back on It's body, Arsh helped his father in the mission. Arushi sat in front of them seeing the father-son duo work with utmost patience and concentration, Her earlier sadness long forgotten.
"Done!" The father and son exclaimed in unison.
"Is it back to It's old self?" Khushi asked
"There's still a crack near the shoulder, I don't know what to do with that." Arsh pouted examining the doll.
"You tried to get it back to its previous beautiful self and I'm proud of you for trying Arsh" Khushi cupped his face and kissed his forehead.
"But mumma, It's not like earlier." Arsh pouted.
"It won't go back to its earlier self Arsh, Because it has been broken once. No matter how hard you try.. There will always be the signs and the scars of what had happened. There will always be cracks which will remind you of the struggle she went through. You'll have to be careful that you don't break it again, Because this time it'll be easier than the last time." Khushi explained.
Arsh scrunched his face in confusion
"You'll understand one day what I'm talking about. Just never forget what I said to you. Go and play with Ashu" Khushi patted his head. Arsh ran out of the hall grabbing his doll.. I mean his sister's hand and dragging her along with him.
Arnav held Khushi's hand in his own, "How do you do that?" He asked
"It's our responsibility to teach them such things. I've just planted the seed. Like Mumma had, With the 'Rose & Thorn' conversation. Hopefully, My words will come to his aid when he's.. in the need of advice." Khushi said softly
Arnav smiled, "It sure will"
