PAST FLASHES
“Arnavji.. I didn't”
“Please listen to me Arnavji”
“Arnavji.. Believe me I did not do this”
“Liar!! A bloody liar you are and nothing else. How dare you do something like this by keeping my family's name at stake??”
“Give me one chance. Just one chance to explain myself Arnavji. I did not betray you”
***
Present
His foot pressed on the pedal of the car. Head throbbing in pain. It had been years, Yet her pleads, His helplessness, Those accusations hadn't left him in peace. He sighed, Massaging his temple as he sped his SUV
“Why do I still care?” Arnav asked himself closing his eyes.
“Khushi.. Careful Dammit. I am not going to be there all the time to save you from falling!” Arnav said holding her securely in his arms. She had just tripped on her saree
“Why aren't you going to be there? Are you planning on abandoning me?” Khushi asked standing on her feet. Tears formed in her eyes
“I was saying practically Khushi.. Why'd I abandon you? Alright, Fine I'm sorry now don't cry. Don't you know how much I hate tears in your doe eyes?” Arnav gently cupped Khushi's cheeks and wiped the tears which had escaped her eyes
***
“It's been years, Yet.. I can't wrap my head around the fact that you could indulge in something so.. How could you Khushi?? How could you?” Arnav banged his hand on the steering.
Suddenly, He saw the silhouette of a woman walking in his direction, He honked and honked but the lady remained unaffected and continued to walk in the direction of the car finally Arnav was forced to apply the breaks and the SUV stopped with a jerk, Making a loud screeching noise which reverberated in the surroundings.
He came out of the car raging like a tiger all ready to give the woman a piece of his mind.
“What the hell were you thinking? Can't you hear the horn? Why did you not move?” Arnav asked angrily
“Why did you stop? Why does everyone stop?” Asked the woman innocently. Arnav froze hearing the all familiar voice. Khushi
Arnav moved closer to her, He gasped taking in the state she was in. He cupped her face “Khushi”
She stood staring blankly at him unsteady on her feet, “I'm sorry” She mumbled inaudibly and lost her consciousness
“Khushi..” Arnav held her hand preventing her fall and pulled her in his arms. “Dammit! Khushi open your eyes.”
He carried her towards his SUV and made her sit in the front seat. Carefully putting the seatbelt he moved to the driver side and drove towards home
“Chotte.. Oh you're back. Who is she?” Anjali asked
“Khushi.. Di please would you mind letting me go. I need to take her to our room” Arnav said and hurried past his still shocked sister to his.. Oops their room.
Anjali immediately shared a look of horror with her mother, And the duo followed Arnav together
“Why have you brought her here?” Ratna asked
“She lost her consciousness. I couldn't leave her in the middle of the road in such a state.” He answered curtly.
“She doesn't have any right to be here”
“Oh yes she does Di.”
“She had betrayed you with that lover of hers Arnav. You had seen all of that with your own eyes. Yet you pity her? You brought her here? Have you lost it?” Ratna exclaimed disappointed
“Arnav.. why don't you understand, We're worried for you. We don't want you to be in any pain.” Anjali said
“I'm thankful for that di. But that doesn't mean I'll leave her alone while she wasn't even in her senses” Arnav snapped
“Chotte.. Humaara woh matlab nahi tha. Hum bas..(Chotte.. I didn't mean it that way. I just..)”
“Maa.. Please, Aap maane na maane woh biwi hai meri. Uska iss ghar pe aaj bhi utna hi haq hai jitna kal tha. Isske baad mein nahi chaahta ki iss mudde par koi discussion ho (Maa Please, Whether you accept it or not she's my wife. She still has the right on this house which she had yesterday. Now I don't want any further discussion on this topic)” Arnav said sternly
“Haq hai uska? (She has the right?)” Ratna and Anjali exclaimed in disbelief
“Yes! She does. Because I never divorced her. Now if you can, Please leave us alone” Arnav said
“Chotte..”
“Please mom. We'll talk later” Arnav said dismissively
***
“Arnavji..” Khushi called out in her honey sweet voice
“Hanji” Arnav tried to imitate her but failed miserably
“Hum aapse bahut.. bahut pyaar karte hain (I love you so.. so much)” Khushi said softly
“Aaj bahut pyaar aa raha hai (Today you are showing too much love)” Arnav raised his brow at her
“Bas yu hi (Just like that)” Khushi whispered
“Bus yuin hi? (Just like that?)” Arnav asked flicking her nose and she blushed hiding her face in his embrace.
“Khushi..”
“Ji.. Aayi (Yes.. Coming)”
Arnav hugged her from the back
“What are you doing?” Arnav asked
“Making kheer”
“But I don't want Kheer” Arnav said huskily
“Then what.. do you want?”
“Umm.. You!” He bit her earlobe making her gasp and moan
“What have you done? How did this happen?” Khushi exclaimed and made Arnav sit on the recliner
Arnav held her hands in his “It's nothing Khushi. Just a small-”
“Dare you.. Dare you say its a small wound. Your bleeding god-dammit” Khushi cut him off angrily
“Okay.. Okay angry bird I'm sorry” Arnav apologized. Khushi took hold of the first aid kit and began dressing his wound.
“Why do you drive so carelessly Arnavji? What if something would have happened?” Khushi asked
“Nothing will happen to me as long as you are there. Okay?” Arnav assured
“What will I do without you Arnavji? I don't have anyone else apart from you. I don't want to lose you” Khushi whispered softly
“You won't lose me Khushi. I'll always be right there” Arnav assured
“Promise me” She demanded
“Promise meri jaan” Arnav kissed her forehead
***
“I love you so much Khushi” Arnav smiled sarcastically at his fate
Arnav was sleeping leaning on the headrest when he felt movement beside him. He opened his eyes only to find Khushi struggling to sit up by herself. Arnav immediately moved closer to help her sit
“Careful.. Slow” Arnav whispered whilst helping her sit. Khushi stared at him confused as he kept pillows behind her to support her back.
“Khushi.. Are you okay?” He asked sensing her gaze
“Sach mein yahaan hain? (Are you really here?)” Khushi asked amazed
Arnav nodded, Concern lining his features. Khushi blinked in a daze.
“Mujhe lagaa.. Phir se sapna hai (I thought.. It was a dream yet again)” Khushi spoke dazed. “Par.. nahi. Mera dil bahut tezi se dhadak raha hai (But.. no. My heart is beating really fast)”
“Khushi.. Stop it. You're scaring me” He thought but words got lost somewhere in his throat as he heard her next words
“I missed you. I missed you so much Arnavji.. I felt like I will stop breathing the next minute.” Khushi whispered innocently. Tears flowed freely from her eyes
“Don't cry Khushi, It's not good for you” Arnav cupped her face as she stared back with her big beautiful doe eyes.
Khushi removed his hands from her face and kept one on her heart.
“I had forgotten that the heart is meant to beat. It seems, It had forgotten too” She told Arnav.
Arnav looked at her confused. Why was she behaving like this? “Khushi. Are you alright?” He asked
“Aap.. mujhe chodkar nahi jaaoge na? (You will not leave me right?)” Khushi asked in a babyish way.
Arnav knew his Khushi more than anything and everything. He had loved her her with all his heart & soul and was brave enough to assume that she had too. From the minute that she had opened her eyes, She hadn't even once mentioned Gaurav. Yeah, Gaurav Khanna.. Her supposed boyfriend, Who wasn't even there with her when he found her all dishevelled & messed up. But he was there, Like always to hold her when she falls. For now it didn't matter if she had cheated on him or not, It didn't matter where she was all this while. All that matters, was that she was with him now & was yearning for protection.
“Are..you angry.. with me?” She asked scared
Arnav held her face in his palms “No baby I'm not angry. I-I was just.. what were you doing on the outskirts of delhi?” Arnav asked softly
“Outskirts? I.. I was with bhaiyu.. I was talking to bhaiyu he was telling me to go & sleep. I.. I thunder.. I don't know.. I don't remember what happened.. I ran out of the house and.. he.. My head hurt.. I don't remember.. My.. head.. I.. uh.. I don't.. remember. I'm t..tired” Khushi stuttered in a mess of words. Arnav stroked her hair gently.
“Relax.. Sleep” Arnav whispered softly detaching himself her.
She looked at him innocently clutching the front of his tee. “Don't.. Go Please.” Khushi pleaded
“I'm here only Khushi. I'm not going anywhere” He assured stroking her hair

Next Morning
“Good Morning Ma.. Good Morning Di” Arnav greeted
“Morning Chotte” They greeted back
“What's for breakfast?"
“Toast & Juice. And the usual.. paranthas” Anjali told him with a frown
“What happened chotte? You never ask about breakfast. What happened suddenly?” Ratna asked
“Nothing Maa. HP! Make some light breakfast for Khushi, Upma or something” Arnav instructed. HP nodded
Ratna rolled her eyes at her son.
“Something new? It's always happened like this. She doesn't have parathas for breakfast. Why are you looking at me like that” Arnav asked
“You seem to have a weak memory chotte. The girl you are taking care of like a mother doesn't deserve that treatment from you” Ratna said
Arnav sighed
“Let me decide what kind of behaviour and treatment I want to bestow upon her Maa. Right now all I know is that my Khushi.. Yes My Khushi needs me. And I'm going to be there for her, No matter what” Arnav stated and made his way towards his room with his breakfast
“You're getting yourself into a mess Arnav Singh Raizada. And I have no idea why” Anjali said sighing.
Arnav stopped looked at her “I have always loved her Di. I never stopped feeling whatever you are trying to shield me from. This mess, that you think I'm getting into.. I never got out of it di. My life.. is a mess. And it's a lot better if its with her” He said and entered the room.
Khushi was sitting near the window of the room staring at nothing in particular, Arnav walked upto her “Khushi.. Are you Okay?” He asked softly in order to not startle her.
Khushi looked up and nodded cutely.
“Why are you sitting here like this?” Arnav asked
She shrugged. “Mumma angry with me?” She asked
“No baby”
“Really?” She asked excitedly
Arnav sighed at her innocence, “A little”
“How do I pacify her?” She asked
“It's Okay. She'll come around. Aren't you hungry?” He asked
Khushi nodded. Arnav smiled and started feeding her in silence.
“Khushi.. Why are you so.. silent?” Arnav asked
“I.. don't know what to say”
“Are you missing Gaurav?” He risked the question & dreaded a yes in her response
“Gaurav? Who is Gaurav? Someone I.. I know?” She asked confused
Arnav looked at her shocked
“Gaurav..” He sighed “No.. Just a friend of mine.. Who told me that he was good friends with you too. I thought..”
“I don't remember any Gaurav. Actually, My memories are all.. really messed up. I don't.. know.. what's happening with me” Khushi confessed
“Relax… I'm there right. It's Okay” Arnav cooed softly.
***
“Maa.. Where's Khushi?” Arnav asked Ratna as soon as he spotted her in the living room
“Oh-ho Arnav, You've just returned from the office. Relax for a minute before going to your wife. Spend time with your family too” Ratna said
“I need to see her Maa. She was alone the whole day” Arnav said
“She's in the room only” Anjali informed him
“Did she eat?” Arnav asked
Anjali shook her head
“Stubborn” Arnav muttered and made way to his room asking HP to make coffee for him
***
“Khushi! Why didn't you have your lunch? Why the hell are you so.. childish? How can I be there every single time to make you eat?” Arnav thundered over her
Khushi flinched and curled up in a ball scared of his anger “I-I am.. I am sorry, I didn't..” She started to stutter badly
Arnav realized that he was a little too harsh on her “I'm sorry, I scared you.. I'm really sorry Khush” Arnav whispered in her ear. Khushi was still breathing hard due to fear making Arnav all the more guilty of losing control
“I am sorry Khushi.. How could I be angry on my Khushi.. I'm sorry Please calm down Jaan.” Arnav whispered sweet nothings to her.
“Aap mujhe chodkar nahi jaoge na Arnavji.. Kabhi nahi jaoge na? Mein marr jaungi aapke binaa (You will not leave me Right Arnav.. You'll never leave right? I'll die without you)” Khushi sobbed
“I won't Khushi.. I promised you right? I WON'T LEAVE. Relax baby calm down” Arnav kissed her hair
“Mumma kahengi tab bhi nahi? (Not even if mumma says?)” She asked
“Nahi meri jaan. Bhagwaan bhi kahega tab bhi nahi (No my life. Not even if god says)” Arnav said softly
Mumma!?
“Will you stay here Khushi. I'll be back in a while” Arnav asked softly
She nodded uncertainly. Arnav kissed her forehead & nose in a way of assurance
***
“Ma.”
“Time mil gaya tumhe uss.. ladki se? (Did you find time from that.. girl?)” Ratna asked sarcastically
“What did you say to her?”
“What.. Why would I say anything to her?” She asked confused
“Ma.. Why Did you tell her that I'll divorce her?”
“Won't you?”
“Ma?!”
“I didn't lie, Did I chotte? Girls like her don't learn from their mistakes Chotte. She is going to break your heart once again and.. when she does that, I'm going to make sure that you divorce her first thing. Though if you want to escape all the pain and hassle, You can divorce her even now” Ratna said
Arnav sighed
***
Arnav entered the apartment of Gaurav Khanna with his mother in tow. The house help who had opened the door for them left to do her work after greeting them
“What are we doing here Ma” Arnav asked
“Your Khushi had called me and said that she was at her friend's place, She had asked me if we could pick her from here on our way to the temple. So I agreed” Ratna explained
Arnav nodded.
“Khushi..” He called
“Khushi.. Where are-” He froze suddenly as he saw Khushi & Gaurav in a very awkward compromising position. Gaurav was holding Khushi by her waist. His lips moved but Arnav was too dazed to notice what he was saying.
“K-Khushi” A feeble whisper escaped his lips
“Khushi!!” His mother screamed causing Khushi to move away from Gaurav.
“Mumma.. I-”
“In the car! Now!!!” She ordered cutting her off. Khushi looked at arnav who was looking as though all the life was sucked out of him.
“Arnavji.. Mein- (Arnavji I-)” Khushi tried to speak only to be ruthlessly pulled by Ratna towards the lift
“Maa..” Arnav followed them “Stop it!!”
“Did you not see what was happening inside chotte?” Ratna snapped
“I did Maa.. I saw everything. But what will you get by creating a scene here. Let's get home and sort this out” Arnav said
***
“Chotte?” Anjali kept her hand on his shoulder
“Di?” Arnav gestured her to take a seat beside him on the swing in the garden.
“It's been four years Di.. Even now when I look back, I can't believe that Khushi did this. She's not like that di. My Khushi loves me” Arnav exclaimed
“I know. This is a big mess. Did you scold her for not having lunch?” Anjali asked
“She's so irresponsible about herself. I don't want her to.. fall sick” Arnav said
“It's not her fault chotte. She had come downstairs to have lunch, But maa said some silly and mean things and.. she panicked. Ran to her room made a mess of her room. You.. won't believe how messed up she was.. Then I came to her hearing the commotion. Calmed her down made her understand somehow. She made this cute puppy face realising what mess she had created” Anjali smiled “I helped her in rearranging the room and made her sleep”
Arnav smiled imagining her puppy face. "And I blasted on my baby without any reason" He thought guiltily making a mental note to make it up to her somehow
“She's so.. innocent Chotte. I can't believe she'd do something like that to you. Hell she doesn't even remember who Gaurav is. I'm sorry for judging her too quickly, I wasn't even here when the fiasco happened” Anjali said
“Its Okay, How do you know that she doesn't remember Gaurav?” Arnav asked
“We talked for a while before she slept, And I slipped his name but.. she didn't remember him. She got all confused She's not the kind of girl who would hook up with some random boy. And if she loved him she should have remembered him too. Even after.. the supposed lapse in her memories she remembers you” Anjali said
Arnav nodded. “There's definitely more to it than what meets the eye” He said
“I guess you should talk to Gaurav. He was once your friend. He could be of some help”
***
“I didn't do anything Arnavji. Please believe me I did not do anything” Khushi cried
“We saw everything with our own eyes Khushi” Ratna said angrily
“It's a misunderstanding Mumma. Believe me it's not what it looked like. He was-” Khushi tried to explain but was yet again cut off
“Kyun Khushi?? (Why Khushi??)” Arnav asked his eyes accusing her
“Arnavji.. I didn't"
“Were you not happy with me?” He asked
“Arnavji.. Listen to me please”
“Why did you.. Why did you do this Khushi??” Arnav asked
“Arnavji.. Believe me I didn't do this”
“Liar!! A bloody liar you are and nothing else. How dare you do something like this by keeping my family's name at stake??” Ratna asked
“Give me one chance. Just one chance to explain myself Arnavji. I did not betray you” She pleaded
“Maa.. I need some time. Go to your rooms. We'll talk later” Arnav said and picked up his car Keys. He couldn't do this in this messed up state of mind.

Khanna Industries
Arnav knocked the door of Gaurav Khanna and heard a “Come In”
Gaurav looked up as soon as he felt someone's presence
“Oh. Hello ASR, I must say I'm disappointed. I was expecting you here way earlier” Gaurav said
“I need to ask you something Gaurav” Arnav said
“How is Khushi?” Gaurav asked
“I.. She's fine now. How do you know she's with me?” Arnav asked surprised
“I was there, When she met you on the outskirts of Delhi. She had had a panic attack and had left her house in a daze. I followed her to make sure she's fine, But when I saw you with her.. I just left from there. Knowing she was safe” Gaurav said
“You.. were together?” Arnav asked
“You're misunderstanding us again Arnav. I must say Ratna aunty has done a great job at brainwashing you” Gaurav said
“I'm not misunderstanding her or you Gaurav. She's not the culprit. I never believed what Maa said. I wanted her to explain herself Gaurav. I wanted her version of the events, But I wanted to clear my head first and then listen to her calmly. But by the time I returned, She had.. left” Arnav said
“So.. that's what Ratna aunty said to you. Impressive story. You know the truth might make you hate your mother. Do you still want the truth?” Gaurav asked
“What do you mean?” Arnav asked
“Ratna aunty wanted you to get married to Sheetal. Her mother, and Ratna aunty were friends and wanted the two of you to get married. But before she could put forth the prospect of you marrying Sheetal, You fell in love with Khushi, Married her, Brought her home with you. Ratna aunty thought that Khushi had trapped you in her charms. And because of not being able to bring Sheetal in the house as her DIL. She started to harbour hatred for Khushi in her heart & mind. Even your wife's innocence & genuineness didn't succeed in winning her heart.” Gaurav said with a sigh
Arnav signed him to go on
“And then, I came to your house. You introduced me to her. We were friends in no time & Ratna aunty plotted to use this friendship against Khushi. She came to me.. With a request. She wanted me to make you feel like Khushi was cheating on you, With me. I refused of course, How could I do that to you? And to her? Believe it or not. It was purely timing. You were at the right place at the wrong time. All the time. That day in my apartment. Khushi was there on the instructions of Ratna aunty.” Gaurav said
“The way you were..”
“She was dizzy, She was.. about to fall and hurt herself when I held her in place. That's when you people entered and literally dragged that poor soul out of the apartment” Gaurav said
“Later I checked my voicemail, Ratna aunty.. wanted me to do what actually ended up happening. It was not her fault Arnav. It wasn't.. It was just the situation.” He added
“But then.. Why did she leave like that??” Arnav asked
“She didn't leave Arnav. She was forced to leave. She was thrown out of her house in the middle of the night. Your mother threw her out of the house amid her pleads despite.. knowing everything. So much hatred for that innocent child Arnav, I can't believe she could stoop so low” Gaurav said in a low whisper
“How could she??” Arnav whispered dejectedly. For four years, He thought he lost his love, That maybe Khushi didn't love him enough, And after four years.. He comes to know that all this was nothing but a dirty game played by his mother.
“What happened afterwards?” Arnav asked
“When I.. heard those voicemails, I immediately started for your house but the house was.. dark I assumed everyone was asleep so I decided to go back. On my way back home.. I saw her walking on the road, Alone so I.. Stopped the car and asked her to come in, She did and cried bitterly in front of me telling me everything that happened. I took her home. Tried your number but you didn't pick up. I left voicemails but yet again no reply. I used to make her sleep with difficulty but everyday she would ask for you and everyday lying to her became increasingly uncomfortable and difficult for me.” Gaurav said sadly
Arnav sighed. “I thought she was happy with you and I didn't want to disrupt her happiness. I didn't blame her for.. anything, But myself. I thought I wasn't good enough for her and if her happiness indeed lies in you. She had all the right to seek that happiness” He said
“She slipped into depression, Her pregnancy got complicated. The doctors tried their best to make the child survive but she suffered a miscarriage in the fourth month. Her condition was worsening everyday. She had breakdowns.. But I didn't want to contact you anymore. I wanted her to forget you” Gaurav said
“Pre-Pregnancy? She was.. pregnant?” Arnav asked shocked
“Ratna aunty didn't tell you? She knew after all!” Gaurav asked surprised but then sighed “Why would she actually. She just.. hated Khushi”
“I can't believe she behaved so.. ruthless with Khushi” Arnav whispered brokenly
“Your mother has been beyond cruel to Khushi. I don't want her to.. hurt Khushi again. It took me four years to bring her to this stage. Stop her from having panic attacks every half an hour or so. I don't think I can handle her going back to her previous self. I have handled her like a baby Arnav, All these four years I have taught her to live again yet in order for her to live she needs you. Her breath is stuck in you. Khushi needs her Arnav for existence. I have loved her like my child Arnav. Please I beg you don't hurt her anymore. She's been through so much already that I fear even one more blow will shatter her beyond repair this time” Gaurav said
“You sound like you were with her all this while. But when I asked her about you, She said she doesn't remember you” Arnav frowned
“She suffers from partial amnesia. Her depression lead her to lose her memories of the last few years. She doesn't remember me as Gaurav Khanna, But as her Bhaiyu.” Gaurav said softly
Arnav smiled in acknowledgement
“Although she had lost her memories yet surprisingly, You stayed.. Ratna aunty stayed.. Like a nightmare but yeah she too stayed. When even after being diagnosed with amnesia, She didn't stop having nightmares and the panic attacks I realised to what extent Ratna aunty had affected her. I hate your mother Arnav for.. pushing that innocent child to such extremes” Gaurav sighed
“I won't let any harm come her way Gaurav. I promise you that. Thank you for being there for her. Thank you for holding her together all this while. I can't be grateful enough” Arnav said softly holding his hand. “And thank you for telling me the truth”.
Gaurav smiled “Anything for her. I hope she is continuing her therapies?”
“Yes.. She is, I coincidentally took her to the very psychiatrist where she was getting her treatment when I saw symptoms of depression. I'm sorry for being part of the reason she underwent such trauma.” Arnav said.
"I don't blame you. You didn't know and your mother fed you lies. As I said, It was the situation. At least you are with her now" Gaurav said
"Thank you for understanding me. I shall take your leave now" Arnav said softly
“Uhh. Arnav are you going home?” He asked.
Arnav nodded.
“Can I.. come along. It's been a while I've seen her. If you don't mind” Gaurav asked hesitantly.
“Of course. Come along” Arnav said.
***
There was a knock on the door, Anjali opened the door only to find Arnav & Gaurav standing there.
“Chotte? Gaurav? What a surprise. Come in” Anjali gave way to duo to enter.
Ratna looked up from the magazine only to find Gaurav in front of her and Arnav standing behind him.
“What are you doing here?” Ratna asked.
“I brought him here Maa. Is khushi in her room?” Arnav asked.
“Oh. So finally you're out of your illusions of love. I'm glad” Ratna said.
“Expecting a straight answer from you is like expecting a polar bear to survive in The Desert of Thar. I don't know why I even try. Di? Where is Khushi?” Arnav asked.
“In the Kitchen. I was making her lunch and she was frying Jalebis” Anjali informed.
Arnav smiled. “So my Jalebi queen is back in business.”
“Di. Will you go and bring her here?” Arnav asked.
“Of course chotte. Right away” Anjali skipped to the Kitchen and brought Khushi back with her.
“Arnavji.. You called me?” She asked entering the living room but froze seeing Gaurav. He smiled warmly at her.
Khushi ran straight into the arms of Gaurav who stumbled a little but held her protectively close to himself.
“My mishti missed me haan?” He cooed softly. Khushi nodded with a wide smile.
“I missed you too shona. Are you happy with your Arnavji?” He asked.
Khushi looked at Arnav who smiled and she nodded at Gaurav who patted her head with a smile.
"God bless you mera baccha. Humesha khush reh (God Bless you my child. Always be happy)
“Come Sit Bhaiyu, I'm making Jalebis I'll bring them for you” Khushi exclaimed happily.
“Hey.. wait, Where are you running like the Shatabdi Express. I'll come with you” Anjali smiled at her childish SIL
“Thank you Arnav, For giving me the pleasure to witness the happy her. Thank you for.. not leaving her side even when you didn't know the whole truth” Gaurav said softly.
“I am her husband Gaurav. Driving away her fears, Pulling her out of her insecurities, It's my responsibility. I am not doing anything out of the ordinary” Arnav said softly.
“What the hell is happening here? Why are you talking to him like long lost friends?” Ratna asked authoritatively.
“Nothing much I just told him the truth” Gaurav said coolly.
Ratna eyed the two men shocked. “Chotte.. He is lying. He wants to drive a rift between the two of us. Chotte.. You believe me Right?” Ratna asked.
“Believe? You? What a joke Ma. I have no reason to believe you anymore. I had.. I had trusted you with my life at one point in time. I had trusted you more than I'd ever trust anyone else. You said she left on her own I believed you. Four years you didn't allow me go and look for Khushi, I obeyed you. Four years you blabbered nonsense about my Khushi I bore with it without retaliating even once thinking that you were angry with her for cheating on me. You even turned Di against Khushi. You made Di hate Khushi even though she wasn't even there when the fiasco happened. Why Maa? Why so much hatred for my wife? WHY??” Arnav roared in frustration.
“Because she doesn't deserve you. An orphan like her doesn't deserve my son!” She retaliated equally.
“Yeah she doesn't deserve me.. Only the girl Mrs. Ratna Ankush Raizada choses for me deserves me. Isn't it Ma? Sheetal deserved me. Just her. Even if she didn't want me, Only she deserved me. What kind of obsession is this Maa?? What kind of stubbornness is this? That you didn't think twice before tearing your son's life apart? Before driving my Khushi away from me. Before throwing her out of this house in the middle of the night, Didn't the thought of your son cross your mind even once when you were doing this to her? Didn't you know what she meant to me? Why were so cruel to her? Why were you so indifferent to her pleas? Her cries?? How could you do this to a woman Ma? She was carrying a life inside her? Didn't you think even about your son's unborn child before playing such a cruel game?? Say it Maa!! Say it!” Arnav asked anger and helplessness evident in his voice as well as posture.
“I only wanted the best for you my chotte. I love you and I did everything for your good. Believe me Chotte” Ratna said softly.
“You wanted the best for me?? Losing my Khushi was best for me?? Thinking for four long years that my khushi was happy with someone else was best for me?? Living with the pain of not being able to breath next to my Khushi for four years was best for me?? Having sleepless nights for years was best for me?? You Mrs. Raizada and your game have costed me and My wife four years of our lives. She lost her memory, We lost our baby and you are the reason for everything that ever went wrong in our lives. Do you still believe it was best for me??” Arnav asked.
Ratna stood stumped as she was shown the mirror of her actions and their consequences on the life of Arnav.
“Stay away from her Maa. You have already made Khushi face enough to last for a lifetime. Don't try to hurt her anymore, Or forget you had a son” Arnav warned.
“Chotte.. Chotte?? Chotte.. Listen to me.. Chotte!!” Ratna followed shouting but Arnav stormed off towards the kitchen.
***
“Chotte.. I thought it was best if she went in the living after you guys were done” Anjali explained in a whisper.
“Thank you” He whispered “Can you leave us alone for a while?”
Anjali nodded and left. Arnav hugged Khushi from behind.
“Arnavji.. Are you okay?” She asked. Arnav Hummed.
“I heard raised voices” She said softly. Arnav hummed again.
“Mumma really loves you Arnavji” she said.
“No Khushi, She doesn't. She only loves herself” Arnav said burying his face in her hair. Khushi turned in his arms.
“Shh.. Relax” She whispered softly caressing his hair.
“I'm sorry Khushi.. I'm sorry for everything” Arnav spoke before his tears started to burn the skin of her neck. Khushi tried to break the hug to have a clear view of his face but his grip tightened around her every time she tried to move.
“Don't.. Please” He sobbed clinging to her.
“What's wrong Arnavji? You're scaring me” Khushi said concerned. Arnav tightened his grip on her.
“Khushi … I love you” Arnav whispered desperately.
“I love you too. Please let me see you. Please I'll not move an inch from where I am standing I promise” Khushi said softly. Arnav let go of her reluctantly.
“I love you Arnavji. You know that right?” She asked. Arnav nodded cutely.
“What's wrong?” She asked softly. Arnav shook his head.
“You're the worst liar” She stated. Arnav nodded cutely again.
“I love you” She stood on her tiptoes but didn't reach his forehead so she gestured him to bend and he obliged with a smile.
She kissed his forehead repeating her confession then both his eyes, His nose, His cheeks, and finally she pecked his lips before hugging him close to herself. “I love you so much” Khushi whispered softly.
“I love you you too” Arnav said “Thank you. You always know how to do it”
“Don't ever cry like that henceforth. I hate to see tears in your eyes” Khushi said softly.
Arnav nodded and kissed her forehead. “I know.. I'm sorry”
