Breaking the last Straw

Living in a society today is much different than it used to be. The supernatural and humans used to always be at war. Many from each side were lost in the centuries we all were at war with each other. Over four decades ago I guess there was a treaty put in place. Their big wigs and ours all made an agreement to live amongst each other in harmony.

No one knows exactly the stipulations intact with that agreement but it has been peaceful and that is how it should stay.

Some humans still despise the supernatural creatures and some still hate us mere mortals. I never had a problem with them. I found them intriguing. I mean I shouldn't have an issue seeing that my boyfriend for the last year is the CEO of Waller technology incorporated. Also, a vampire. Right now nothing else matters though.

Pure joy is all I felt heading back to my house where I knew my love would be waiting for me.

As a vampire he has a temper but I shouldn't push him so much. He only raises his hands to me when I go to far in an argument. I should know better but maybe this will all change now. I held the ultrasound to my chest in excitement. I couldn't wait to tell him.

The doctor says I am eight and a half weeks. This is everything I ever wanted in life and cannot wait for what the future holds.

"Honey, are you here?" I shout as I rush through the front door.

"In the dining room sweetheart." I heard his voice call me.

I pulled off my jacket, hanging it on the hook by the door and rushed to the dining room. There stood Cyrus Waller. Tall, muscular, black short hair with a lightning bold shaved on both sides. His dark chocolate skin shined under the dim lights where he had a beautiful candlelight dinner awaiting me.

"Oh baby, you shouldn't have." I tell him as I give him a big kiss. We had a fight about a week ago this is actually normal for when he is ready to make up.

"It is no problem baby. I had my chef whip something up for us." He tells me and I roll my eyes at his bluntness.

"Have a seat. I have something wonderful to share with you." I tell him and he simply takes his seat.

I was nervous as I rubbed the moonstone necklace around my neck.

"What is the wonderful news you wanted to share?" he asks as he digs into the fettuccine prepared for us.

I couldn't form any words I only slid the ultrasound to him as he stared at the picture.

He grabbed the picture to look closer and his brows were furrowed. I smiled thinking he was in a state of awe but I was wrong.

Out of nowhere he crumbled the picture in his hand. He then brought his fist in the air and smashed it into the table causing the table to break beneath his strength.

"You will get rid of the abomination inside of you Arrow. There is no argument to be had." Cyrus screamed in my face.

"This is my body Cyrus. I cannot do that. I thought you loved me. I thought you wanted a family?" I questioned.

"I do love you Arrow. I love you so much but we cannot have a child together. You need to understand." He pleads.

"Understand what? Cyrus, you said you loved me, you wanted a family with me but now you are telling me to abort our child." I shout back at him.

"I am married, Arrow. I have a wife." He says catching me off guard.

"A wife?" I question aloud.

"We are separated. Have been for some time now. She is ill and this would kill her." He says to me like it is his excuse.

Tears threated to spill from my eyes as my heart began to ache from his betrayal. He didn't betray me though. He betrayed his wife. I was the other woman. I felt so disgusting and low.

"Leave Cyrus, we are finished." I say with forceful determination.

"What are you talking about Arrow?" He was stunned by my sudden outburst.

"This whole year you manipulated me. You made me think we were in love, going to have a family, get married one day, but you were lying the entire time. Even after all the abuse." I kept my voice strong through the tears spilling onto my cheeks.

"Arrow you don't mean that." He says as he tries to get closer.

"I mean every word Cyrus. We are done. I want you out of my house and never show your face here again." I tell him.

"Come on baby. We can work through this." He says grabbing my arm pulling me to him.

He smashed his lips against mine. Any other time this would have melted my heart but now I only feel my stomach churning. I shoved him off me and smacked him across the face.

I heard a dark laugh coming from Cyrus. I knew instantly that smacking him was a bad idea. His eyes met mine and they were glowing red. Fear instantly overcame my body.

I began to shake in my frozen state as he was now in front of me in the blink of an eye with his super speed. His large hand was wrapped around my throat, squeezing air slowly from my smaller body.

I clawed at his hand as he lifted me off the ground. He then shoved me back against the wall smacking my head off it. I fell to the ground. My vision was blurry and I felt like I was going to vomit. I rolled to my side, trying to push myself off the ground but my arms felt like jelly.

"You know better than to disrespect me Arrow." He says with a dangerous tone.

He then began kicking me over and over. I scream in pain, begging him to stop but he never did. No matter how hard I tried to block him my body was becoming numb. When he finally stopped, he reach down grabbing me by my hair but dots filled my vision and his words sounded like muffled echoes. The darkness soon overtook me.

Beep. Beep. Beep. Echoed through the room. I opened my eyes squinting from the light. I saw the machine causing the annoying noise. I looked around and realized I was in a hospital room.

I heard people approaching so I pretended to still be asleep and tried to remain calm to not inform them otherwise.

"Your liege, she suffers from multiple rib fractures, a bruised trachea, and a minor concussion." I heard a female voice say.

"I do not care about that doctor. Is it gone?" I heard his voice and at first I was in confusion.

"Yes sir. The ultrasound shows her body has completed the miscarriage. She is no longer with child." The lady says and my heart clenched.

I had to remain calm for now so they would think I was asleep.

"Good. Now I have meetings the rest of the afternoon. I will be back here this evening. Make sure she does not leave the hospital." His voice was threatening.

I heard their footsteps walk away as they both left my room. After a few seconds hoping they were gone I cried. I sobbed to myself at the loss of my child. My child that he took from me. He didn't care, he wanted the child gone. I knew I could not stay here but I had nowhere to go. I needed to think fast but it was hard with the pain I felt in my heart.

Lie. Lie. Is all I could think. Being pre-law I knew I could lie without a doubt I just hope he would believe it. I pressed the help button on my bed hoping a nurse would show soon.

A young woman in a scrubs and lab coat came in.

"Hi Ms. Newman. I am Dr. Abadon. How are you feeling?" She asks. By her voice I know she is the same woman as before that was in here with Cyrus.

"Ugh. My stomach and head are killing me." I say to her with a groan trying to think of the lies I could spew her way.

"Can you tell me what day it is?" She asks.

"Tuesday October 27, 2024." I tell her, knowing that was yesterday.

"Okay you suffered a minor concussion, let me check your chart and I will be right back." She says to me.

The door did not close all the way and I then heard her in a hush tone on a phone call.

"Your liege, she is awake?" she began.

"No sir, she thinks it is Tuesday. She has lost some memory which is common in these cases." She continued.

"Yes sir. I understand. I will tell her we need to keep her a few days for obvious reasons for evaluation. How is the misses? Okay so you will be here in the early afternoon tomorrow? See you then sir." I heard her whisper before she returned to the room.

"Alright Ms. Newman. You were in a small car accident earlier today. Minor concussion, multiple rib fractures and bruised trachea. We will need you to stay a few days for evaluation before you are able to return home." She says to me with a smile.

"Okay. Can you call my emergency contact and let them know of everything?" I ask her.

"Of course. Anything else I can do for you?" She asks sweetly.

"Yes, do you have any vending machines here? I like to snack at night." I tell her.

"Yes, Second floor. You are on the first. If you feel too much pain walking let me know and we will assist." She tells me.

"No that is fine thank you though. If I am going to be here a few days I need to stretch my legs. I will be cautious though." I respond to her.

She smiles sweetly before leaving the room. I needed to be quick but not raise any red flags.

I stood on my feet and pain radiated through my stomach but I had to fight through. I saw my wallet on the cabinet where they keep hospital gowns and such. I opened the door and found grey sweatpants and a grey sweatshirt. I decided to change the gown I was currently wearing for those.

I then grabbed my wallet and slowly began leaving the room trying to make my mind numb to the pain that flowed through me with every step.

It took a long time but I made it to the second floor where there were vending machines and it was also the cafeteria. I spotted the atm machine. I went to the cafeteria and grabbed a couple slices of pizza and took a seat.

As I ate I was trying to figure out what I could do, I had no one. My friends were his friends and so I couldn't trust them.

I lost track of time. When I looked at the clock it said six in the evening. Then a thought occurred. Cyrus had a bank account set up for me that he deposited money in over the year for me to use hoping I wouldn't work to give more of my time to him.

A thought occurred to me. Normally withdrawing money would send notifications during business hours. If did this, then I would have to be fast about it. Before business hours tomorrow. I knew he had taken the limitation off my withdrawal amount spoiling me and all. Could I get by with this? What would happen if he caught me?

Thoughts kept running through my mind and I knew I had to get as far as possible away from him, from all this.

I mustered up the courage and when the coast was clear I approached the atm machine. My heart was pounding fast and my hands were sweaty as I pressed the pin into the machine. I had to do it several times but I took the maximum that this machine allowed me to. I opened my wallet securing the five thousand I had withdrawn. I hope this is enough.

I then used the card in the vending machines. I got a few bags of Doritos, a few bags of m&ms, and a few other chocolate bars. I then went to the other machine and grabbed a few bottles of Gatorade and water. I struggled carrying them back to my room.

I shoved them on the table and climbed back into bed waiting for their evening rounds. I turned on the television to act like I was making myself homey.

Not to long after a nurse entered my room.

"Hi, I am just going to take your blood pressure." She says as she approaches me with the small machine.

She took my vitals. After she headed out of my room and I knew it would be a few hours before anyone came to check on me. If I was going to escape I needed to do it quickly.

Being on the first floor I was low risk so the windows were able to be opened. I found a small trash bag in the cabinet and used it to stick the food I got and drinks in it. I also threw my wallet in it leaving the card he gave me on the sink so I would not be tempted and could not be tracked.

I grabbed the moonstone on my neck and sent a silent prayer. 'Momma, please watch over me. Give me strength to do what is needed to be done.' I took a deep breath and exited the window. I was about to leave everything I knew behind but it is for the best. I need to start over.

I ran through the parking lot, trying to keep myself hidden through the cars. I went to the back of the parking lot looking for any car with the doors unlocked. Finally, a beige Honda Accord was unlocked, Thanks to youth I knew how to hotwire a car. I put the trash bag in the passenger seat and began searching through the car.

I found a small pocketknife in the driver door. I thought to myself for a second of everything I learned in law school on kidnapping cases. Tags. They could use that to find me. I needed to be smart about this.

I used the knife to undo the tags on the car. I then went to the row ahead and found a blue minivan. I then took those tags off and replaced them with the Accord tags. Then I went to another beige car and switched their tags with the mini vans. I put those tags on the accord.

Thankfully it was an older model which meant no tracking system. I ripped out the wires underneath the steering wheel and got the car started. Awesome the car had almost a full tank of gas. I did not want to stop until the car absolutely needed refilled.

This was it. I was making my escape. I just hoped it would work and I could get far away from this place.
