3 - We Don't Talk Anymore
The atmosphere in the Yoon Mansion was tense and silent.
Jeonghan was still struggling to comprehend what happened before the Choi family left.
Him marrying Seungcheol? No fucking way!
But he was still anxious. He very well knew what was going to happen with him. His mom was definitely cooking up tricks to convince him.
It was when Joshua's phone rang. He excused himself from his family to attend the call but returned after a while in a subtly terrified state.
"What happened?" Jeonghan was quick to notice the anxiety on his younger brother's face.
"Seokmin had called me." Joshua gulped, "He said that his mom had warned Seungcheol that if he doesn't marry Jeonghan, he will not fix my wedding with Seokmin either. She'll talk to mom and dad tomorrow morning."
"What kind of warning is that?" Jaebyeom stood up, "I mean I understand she's desperate for this. Even we thought it was the right proposal, forcing it isn't a good way."
"I understand her concerns." Jiah scoffed, "These brats need to be forced if we want to see them happily married or else their tantrums would never end."
Here she goes, MOTHER YOON.
"Mom, please don't start-"
"You shut up!" Jiah sat down, "When are you going to marry? I have no hopes left anymore. I'm wishing for only one thing and you can't do me this favour? Pity your mom, Jeonghan."
"Why are you talking like that mom?" Jeonghan mumbled.
"Because I'm so fed up." Jiah sighed, "I'm sorry but you should get married now. What's wrong with that? Your business, your career is already settled. Your brother is ready to marry. Then why can't you?"
"Because I don't want to?"
"But you have to!" Jiah pointed at her son, "Listen Jeonghan, Seungcheol is a good guy. He'll definitely be an even better husband. You both look good together."
Jeonghan scoffed as he looked down.
'Look good together?
He might be a good person but not to me, not after what I did to him.
Oh god, is this world that small?'
"Jeonghan, back to earth!" Jiah snapped her fingers to gain his attention, "I'm talking to you."
"How are you so sure that everything will go well?" Jeonghan cocked a brow, "Yes he's a good person and probably will be a good husband but is it necessary that we'll be compatible with each other? What if we don't fit right?"
"You've dated some already, didn't you?" Jiah crossed her arms across her chest, "What happened? Nothing. For example, that girl Sara."
"Sara who?" Jeonghan mumbled to his younger brother.
"Your ex-girlfriend." Joshua replied, "The one with blonde straight hair and weak eyesight."
"Oh." Jeonghan recalled as he turned to his mom, "She was a nice girl, just not my type."
"And what about that guy Jinseok?" Jiah asked further.
"Now who the fuck is he?" Jeonghan muttered again.
"The koala." Joshua retorted.
"Damn." Jeonghan rolled his eyes, "Why have I dated so much huh?"
"Don't even ask me about the things you've done in your whole life-span." Joshua massaged his forehead.
"I must have dated a few people but never slept with any of them though." Jeonghan shrugged.
"Oh?" Joshua broke into a sarcastic chuckle, "My pleasure, isn't it?"
"What are you guys murmering like bees?" Jaebyeom clapped his hands twice to gain the attention of his sons.
"Mom, he was a bit extra clingy." Jeonghan replied, "I couldn't handle him that's it."
"This proves that you've such a bad choice in choosing a partner." Jiah scoffed, "So you better not find one by yourself."
"MOM-? Am I not your own son?"
"You are but you didn't choose us so anyways." Jiah grinned in victory, "You're good at your work, you're a good son and a good brother. So it's necessary that you'll be bad at dating and all. Your dad was bad in academics but he was so cool with flirting and all."
"Hun, calm down, will you?" Jaebyeom stared at his wife in disbelief.
"Okay let's move on." Jiah calmed her demeanor, "How many blind dates have you attended?"
"You should have a count on them." Jeonghan whined, "I never went on my own will. One of them threw all the food on me because she wasn't ready for marriage. How is that my fault? Go throw the food on your dad's face. And that one bastard who wanted a one nigh-"
"Shut up." Joshua hissed as he held his brother's hand.
"Well what does that imply?" Jiah cleared her throat, "That we can't trust a total stranger."
"Mom! Please?" Jeonghan bent down on his knees and bowed, "Please get to the point already."
"Seungcheol is neither your choice nor a complete stranger." Jiah stated, "Which means he's the best for you."
"How does that even make sense?" Jeonghan sat back on his seat.
"It makes a lot of sense hun!" Jiah chuckled, "Marry him Jeonghan. See, your brother's marriage is at stake."
"You should be talking to them right now instead of me for making such a ridiculous demand. This is not some barter system." Jeonghan sternly stated, "Why can't Joshua marry Seokmin if I don't marry Seungcheol? I've known Aunt for long enough, how can she propose such a thing?"
"She cares for her son just like I do." Jiah huffed in annoyance, "Both of you are nearing 30s and are a total failure in dating. You only care for your work so somebody has to think about your marital life eventually."
"What does it have to do with our ages?"
"It has everything to do with your ages."
Jeonghan sighed as he stayed silent. He was known for his negotiation tricks but who was against him right now? His mother.
"Joshua? Say something to your brother?" Jiah raised his brows.
"What do I tell him? He's a responsible old man himself." Joshua rolled his eyes.
"Old man?" Jeonghan glared at the younger.
"It's great how you skipped the responsible part." Joshua laughed.
"Mom!" Jeonghan scoffed, "I'll think about it."
"Think about it?" Jiah stood up and left, "I'm so done with these three men."
"Three men?" Jaebyeom scrunched his brows as he stared at his wife's disappearing figure, "What did I do?"
The two brothers laughed as Jeonghan looked at the closed room of his mother, "She's cute."
"Jeonghan." Jaebyeom gained his attention, "You know your mom just wants your good right? And-"
"I know dad." Jeonghan reassured, "I'm not saying anything to you both, I understand your concerns. But everything is so abrupt, I can't really get a hold on this situation."
"Listen son." Jaebyeom walked towards his older son and held his shoulders, "I know you're mature enough to make the right decision. I won't force you okay? Marriage is a huge deal, your mom is being restless because she wants you to get married and she can foresee a good chance right now.
I'll not be that restless but I think this is not bad. We know Seungcheol and his family, they're really good people. I would recommend you to give it a serious thought. And about Seokmin and Joshua, I'll see, I'll talk to them to not to propose such obligations. Good Night sons."
"Good Night Dad." Both of them retorted after which the older man left.
"Do you want to drink?" Joshua instantly asked his older brother.
"For real." Jeonghan headed out of the four walls through a back door which led to the area of the swimming pool, followed by Joshua.
They settled down at a table beside the pool and organised their little drinking party.
Party? Not really.
After drinking for a while in silence, Joshua finally broke the ice, "So, what do you think about all this?"
"Honestly speaking, I don't think that I need to wonder about this mess." Jeonghan gulped down another glass after removing his coat, "Seungcheol would never agree to marry me."
"Why?"
"Isn't that obvious?" Jeonghan chuckled lazily, "He hated me, he still does. I've apologised to him, that's the most I could do at that time. Why would he agree for this wedding anyways?"
"And you?" Joshua asked, "Don't you hate him too?"
"Why would I hate him?" Jeonghan shrugged, "I don't have any reason for the same while on the other hand, he has many."
"So why did you argue with him in that meeting with BSK?" Joshua cocked a brow.
"It wasn't personal." Jeonghan rolled his eyes, "He accused me of doing my business wrongly when it was their middleman's fault. He should keep his personal feelings away from professional meetings. I can't tolerate someone laying a finger on my very own business for which me and you have worked so hard."
"Well, I think he'll agree to marry you." Joshua sipped his drink.
"Why so?"
"I know Aunt Choi very well." Joshua nodded, "If she has threatened him with such a huge obligation, I don't think she'll back down. Plus she has heart problems, Seungcheol wouldn't be able to resist her demands for long."
"Well in that case, you know our mom too." Jeonghan massaged his forehead, "I don't have a choice, you know that very well. I just hope he denies or else this marriage will turn into a disaster. Oh lord, PLEASE I don't want this at all."
We don't talk anymore, like we used to do
We don't love anymore, what was all of that for?
It was when Jaebyeom rushed towards them, "Boys hurry up, we have to go to the hospital."
"Hospital?" Jeonghan asked in concern as both the males stood up, "What's wrong?"
"Mrs. Choi is admitted to the hospital." Jaebyeom informed, "Her condition is severe. C'mon hurry up!"
Jeonghan and Joshua rushed towards the parking lot and so did their parents. They got into the car and reached the hospital in around 20 minutes.
While stepping into the building, Jeonghan halted Joshua by holding his arm.
"What happened?" Jiah asked.
"We were drinking." Jeonghan informed, "Let us freshen up first before entering the premises."
Joshua stepped back while Jaebyeom nodded and left with his wife.
The two brothers walked towards their car. Jeonghan shuffled through the storage beneath the dashboard and pulled out some mint chewing gums, water bottle and fragrance enhancers.
"This would be enough right?" Jeonghan asked as Joshua nodded, "Yeah. We aren't high or anything."
They gulped a decent amount of water and then began to chew the mint gums to make sure that the smell of alcohol was entirely gone after which the fragrance enhancers helped a lot.
"We're fine right?" Joshua fixed his shirt.
"Yeah I guess." Jeonghan nodded and began to walk, "If there will be a problem, we won't go into aunt's room. We'll stay outside."
Meanwhile Jaebyeom and Jiah rushed to the desired private room in the hospital where Sana was supposed to be admitted.
As soon as they stepped into the room, they witnessed Seungcheol and Seokmin sitting on either side of the bed, on the ground while Sunwoo was seated on the couch with his face held within his palms.
Jiah walked towards her friend while Jaebyeom went to console Sunwoo.
"How's she now?" Jiah asked Seungcheol as Seokmin gave her space.
"She's fine now." The older son replied as Sana slowly opened her eyes.
"Mom! You're awake!" Seungcheol embraced her instantly with teary eyes but his mother remained silent.
Seungcheol clearly understood the reason, "Mom please? We'll talk about it later. My marriage is not more important than your health."
"He's right hun." Sunwoo walked towards his wife, "Please leave it for a while."
"I've only one wish for now, which is stronger than my wish to live." Sana weakly stated, "And you know that."
The room fell silent against the stubbornness of the lady. Seungcheol inhaled a deep breath, "Fine. I'll marry Jeonghan. If that's what you want, then I'll abide by my duty as your son."
Yes he agreed. He didn't seem to have any other option anyways. He was ready to give up if the cost was his family's health.
He knew he was doing the biggest mistake of his life but do you think it was his first time? Nah. He had already done the mistake of loving a particular someone, a very long time ago. This pain was nothing in front of that.
I overdosed, should've known your love is a game
Now I can't get you out of my brain
Oh, it's such a shame
"Really?" Sana looked at her son with a faint chuckle.
Seungcheol nodded with a small smile as his mother embraced him, "But only if you promise to take care of yourself and never ever hide anything from me."
"Of course, I'm sorry son!" Sana sniffled as she caressed Seungcheol's hair.
It was when they noticed the presence of Jeonghan and Joshua. They stood with wide eyes and jaws dropped. They had heard everything that was previously going on in the room.
"Jeonghan! Come here son!" Sana called slowly as the male made his way towards her and sat beside her on the opposite side of Seungcheol.
She intertwined Jeonghan's hands with Seungcheol's, "I'm so happy today."
Jeonghan displayed a fake smile and looked at Seungcheol who avoided any eye contact. Jiah held his other hand, gesturing him to stay silent for now.
Sana scoffed as she felt tired. She wasn't very well yet but she was happy as she had accomplished a very important mission.
It was when Jiah's sobs were heard as she sat beside her. Of course, she was really sad to see her friend in that condition.
"Don't cry Jiah, I'm fine." Sana assured as she coughed slightly.
"You're not." Jiah's sniffles increased, "I should have taken care of you as well."
"It's okay Jiah, please don't blame yourself." Sana's eyes also teared up.
Jeonghan tapped her mother's shoulders, gesturing her to stand up. It wasn't good for her to stay with Sana. She was crying continuously making the patient gloomy as well so it was better for both of them to rest first.
Jeonghan somehow managed to escort Jiah out of the room as he seated her on the side chair. He knelt down against her as he held her hands, "Mom calm down! Her condition will worsen if you make her cry like that."
Jiah cried even more, "I should have been with her."
"Mom it's fine, it's not possible for you to stay by her all the time." Jeonghan caressed her hands, "What matters is you rushing here to see her when she needs you okay? Don't worry much and go home. You can meet her tomorrow morning."
"No, how can I leave her alone?" Jiah protested.
"Mom, your health is deteriorating as well. You need to rest." Jeonghan convinced, "Okay, I'll stay here fine? I'll inform you as soon as she wakes up in the morning. Joshua will take you and dad home."
Meanwhile, a nurse stepped into the room to check on Sana. After she made sure that everything was fine, she provided her the required medication after which Sana fell asleep instantly. The nurse explained a few things to Seungcheol and left.
"Dad, go home." Seungcheol mumbled.
"What are you saying, I'm not going anywhere." Sunwoo protested.
"It's alright dad, you need to rest too." Seungcheol stood up, "Seokmin, take him home and make sure he sleeps. Mom is also sleeping right now and I'm here. You can come back in the morning."
After a few more discussions, Seokmin finally took Sunwoo out. Before he left, he informed Joshua that Jeonghan was calling him.
As decided, Joshua escorted Jiah and Jaebyeom back home as well while Jeonghan walked back into the room as he quietly sat on the sofa as Sana was sleeping due to the effect of the strong medicines.
Seungcheol acknowledged his presence, "You can go home Jeonghan."
"No, it's fine." Jeonghan replied, "Don't bother."
Seungcheol remained silent. After a while he couldn't help but cry his heart out. He was still not over the fact that his parents had to hide such a huge thing from him just so that he could carry on his profession without any stress. He never wanted his parents to feel like that.
Watching him cry like that melted Jeonghan's heart. He ignored whatever was going on between them for this moment as he sat beside him and caressed his back, "We can forget our personal differences for a day."
Seungcheol didn't protest. He didn't have that energy plus he needed that warmth. It didn't matter that it was coming from a person he used to repel in his daily life.
Jeonghan made Seungcheol sit on the couch and drink some water but the older continued to sniffle. Jeonghan caressed his palm and embraced him from the side.
"Why didn't they tell me? Am I not a good son?" Seungcheol mumbled within his sobs.
"There's nothing like that Seungcheol, I know you're feeling bad but they were just finding the right time to tell you." Jeonghan consoled the older, "Don't worry about it now. Focus on the present. Now that you know everything, take care of her."
With that being said, Seungcheol found his safe place for that night. Although it contrasted his daily life and feelings, he was too broken to deny what Jeonghan had to offer him.
Meanwhile Jeonghan's brain shifted to the earlier event.
"Fine. I'll marry Jeonghan. If that's what you want, then I'll abide by my duty as your son."
Seungcheol had agreed to marry him. Jeonghan never expected it to happen but the situation had turned the tables. Watching Sana's condition from his own eyes, did he have the choice to say no anymore?
