Chapter XXIV

"No, never met him before," I answered.

"Weird."

"What was he looking for in my things?"

"I have no idea."

"Well, I'm going to get changed and go to bed," I announced.

"Me too!" she agreed, yawning

I strided into my walk in closet, got changed and stepped out. Before I shut it, I felt the urge to go back inside. I stepped back inside and started to hear whispering. I closed the closet door, leaving me inside alone to better listen. I began touching everything in the closet until I touched one drawer. As soon as I touched it, the whispering got louder, entreating me to open it. Curious, I opened the drawer, closing my eyes to focus.

An image became clear in my mind. I saw his tall, lanky figure walk over to my closet, stepping in. His blood, red eyes scanned over my clothes while he poked and prodded through my things, searching desperately for something. He pulled open the drawer I had just opened myself, pulling out my favorite sweatshirt. He brought it up to his nostrils, inhaling it in before placing it back inside, the way he had found it. He calmly, strolled out of my closet, exiting the room.

My eyes flew open. Confusion radiated throughout my body. What was that? What was he searching for? How was I able to see that? I opened the door, walking out of the closet before shutting it behind me. I hopped into bed, hugging my body close to me. I couldn't shake the feeling that something wasn't right.

I groaned as I heard Star's alarm blare, signaling the start of the new week. I sluggishly sat up, throwing my pillow at Star who hadn't budged.

"Okay, okay! I got it," she mumbled, reaching over to stop the alarm.

Thankful for the silence, I got up and began to get dressed for class, throwing on the first pair of pants and a sweater I found in my closet. I threw on my white blazer, heading for the bathroom to wash up quickly. I got back to find Star at the door, waiting. We departed arm in arm, finding the boys waiting for us in the Common.

I grinned from ear to ear at the sight of Tom standing there all healed up.

"Are you sure you're ready for class?" I asked him.

"He's fine," Joel answered for him, playfully shoving him. Tom chuckled while smiling at me to confirm he was alright.

"Let's go!" said Star, leading the way out.

We walked out together, heading towards the staircase, climbing up them quickly.

"Good luck on your battle today," said Joel, grinning at me and Star.

I groaned, forgetting that was today.

"We'll tell you about our win later," said Star confidently.

Me and Star took off towards Math, sulking the whole way there. That class made no sense at all. I was sure I'd fail when it came to exams. We got seated, waiting for our teacher to walk in. The clickety clack of her heels let us know she arrived. As usual I watched the clock for the entire hour until it was time to leave. Once we left, Star rushed off to her class and I went towards my own.

My phone dinged with a notification as I walked towards History.

Turn around

I spun around to find Tom smiling, behind me.

"Tom!" I exclaimed.

"When's your next class?"

"In an hour."

"Wanna get something to eat?"

"Yes! I'm starving!" I agreed without a moment's hesitation.

He grabbed my hand, pulling me into a wall before I knew what was happening. On the other side, we landed in the Cafeteria. I whipped my head around to look at him, to find him chuckling.

"It's a shortcut to the Cafeteria so you don't have to go the long way."

"You're telling me I've been eating snacks from the vending machine to avoid the trip for no reason?!"

Chuckling, he pointed at a trash can at the far end of the Cafeteria, leaning against the wall at an odd angle. Cocking my head, I looked harder to see that the trash can wasn't real. Proving my point, a student came out from inside of the wall, walking through the trash can heading for the food. I gasped in surprise.

"That's another shortcut. It's in the math section. There are shortcuts all over the Academy."

"That's so cool."

"Let's get food before you're late for class." I followed him towards the food, holding a platter as he piled on food. We walked quickly over to the nearest table, sitting down at it. We ate the food quickly as we talked about our classes.

"Joel mentioned on Saturday that no one has beat you in a long time. Is that true?"

"Yeah. I guess I got overconfident," he said, scratching his head.

"Or you met your match."

He snorted at my reply, finishing the last of the food on the platter. I pulled out my phone to check the time. 10:50 AM. I got up quickly, not realizing how much time had passed.

"I have class in 10. Meet later?"

"Sure, good luck!" he said with an understanding nod.

I walked quickly back through the wall we had come from, flitting the rest of the way to my class once I was sure I was out of sight. I walked into the classroom, taking a seat near the middle since the back seats were filled.

Miss White arrived, settling down at her desk comfortably before speaking.

"Hello, class. Today, we are going to do something new. Instead of me lecturing, I want you to partner up with someone who isn't the same supernatural creature as you. I want you to get to know each other and write down things you never knew about each other on a piece of paper. I will be collecting the papers at the end of class."

She then looked down, diverting her attention away from us and towards the papers in front of us leaving us to ourselves. The students started murmuring, partnering up and moving around to sit with that person. I looked around for someone who hadn't teamed up, locking eyes with a dark haired boy with orange eyes. I smiled brightly at him, motioning at him with my eyes to move beside me. He got up, moving towards me before settling in the seat beside me.

"Hey, I'm Saron."

"David. I'm a dragon. And you are?"

"An angel."

"Cool, what do you want to know about us?"

Racking my brain for questions, I asked, "Do you guys really breathe fire?"

Shooting me a million dollar smile, he responded, "You bet we do, wanna see?"

I nodded excitedly as he lifted his chin, blowing fire out of his mouth. He put his hand out, catching the flame before it hit the student seated in front of him.

"That is so cool," I said in awe.

"Okay, my turn. What can you do besides fly?"

I grinned before responding, "Watch this."

I focused on the desk in front of me, cutting it. In an instant, I split the desk in front of me into two clean halves, drawing the attention of nearby students. I then caused the two halves to come back together, the desk looking as untouched as it did before.

"What's that?" he asked, interested.

"We can shape reality by picturing what we want in our minds. It only works with objects though."

"Coooool," he said, quickly jotting everything I was saying down.

"What's your favorite part of being a Dragon?" I asked.

"Definitely flying. I feel the best when I'm up in the air."

"Me tooo!" I agreed, happily

We chatted until class's end until Miss White reminded us to place our papers on her desk on the way out.

"Nice to meet you, David," I said, gathering my things.

"You too!" he replied.

I left, heading towards Angel class, to our final battle. Goosebumps ran up and down my spine in anticipation. Half of me couldn't wait for the battle while the other half was so nervous I couldn't control my nerves. I took a deep breath, pacing my breathing. Now was not the time to lose control.

I arrived at the building to find Star, jumping in excitement.

Noticing my uneasiness, she encouraged me, "You'll do fine. It's me you have to worry about. I got distracted last time. That won't happen again."

We walked in, spotting Jeremy already seated. We rushed over to him, sitting now near him.

"Are you ready?" I asked him

"Definitely, we got this." Star nodded in approval.

Mr. Sharp walked in smiling.

"Welcome class, are you ready for the last battle?"

The class roared in excitement.

"Alright, can the five teams come up the front while the rest of the class remains seated."

I got up, following Star and Jeremy to the front where we stood together with the four other teams.

"Alright, the rules are the same as before the only difference is it's every team for themselves. Your individual teams are battling four other teams. Stay focused. Help your teammates. Whoever remains, wins."

We all nodded in agreement.

Turning to the class, he announced, "Alright, I have designated the final teams by letter. Team A is Tas, Bonnie, and Jackson. Team B is Carina, Bethan, and Rue. Team C is Thomas, Ben, and Elisha. Team D is Saron, Star, and Jeremy. Team E is Fres, Lila, and Wes."

"The rest of you, join me in the same corner as last class." I watched as the class followed him, hovering in the air, in the far corner far from the battle.

"The rest of you, come up and huddle with your teams before getting your weapons."

I extended my wings, flying to a far corner, huddling with Star and Jeremy. The other teams also huddled, scattered from the other groups.

"What's the plan?" I asked

"We should grab as many weapons as we can because this will probably take awhile," said Star.

I nodded, agreeing. We backed up, waiting for the call. Once all the teams had finished discussing, Mr. Sharp yelled, "Now!"

I charged down, as fast as possible speeding ahead with Star and Jeremy trailing me. I looked from side to side to see the other four teams racing down at around the same speed as me. I focused my magic into my wings, to surge ahead to secure a bow and arrow I saw Bonnie eying a few feet to my left. A huge bang resounded through the arena as we crashed into the weapons pile, toppling all over one another. I rolled over to dodge Tas's muscular body from crushing me, plucking a gas bomb out of the pile and pocketing it. I scanned the pile for a bow and arrow. I spotted two, both secured by Bonnie and Rue. I swiveled around to check on Jeremy and Star. Jeremy was flying back up into the air after securing a spiked ball and a gun. Star was struggling to secure a sword, as Thomas tried to pull it from her grasp. I shot up, flying over, whacking him in the back with my wing, causing him to let go of the sword and Star to secure it.

"Thanks!" she said, out of breath.

I scanned the weapons pile once more to see Bonnie, now struggling to pull a spiked ball from Carina. I took advantage of her distraction to imagine the spiked ball splitting in half. The spiked ball broke in half, sending them both flying in opposite directions. I dove in, snatching the bow and arrow from where it was dangling off Bonnie's shoulder.

"Hey!" Bonnie yelled as I flew away, smirking.

I met Star and Jeremy in the air as we waited for the rest of the teams to secure their weapons.

"Bad ass," Jeremy said.

"Bonnie's definitely going to come for you," commented Star, noticing Bonnie glaring up at me from the weapons pile.

I smiled at the challenge.

"Remember guys, we have one up on them. Use the tricks that we learned on Saturday." I reminded them

We watched the chaos down at the weapon pile for a couple more minutes before everyone joined us in the air, having secured weapons.

"Begin," Mr. Sharp yelled, signaling the start of the battle.
