Chapter XV
She spoke cautiously, breaking away from my worries, "I know who you are."
Cocking my head, I waited for her to continue.
"You're Arogen. I didn't know that it was true until I saw you. Your wings. I saw you flying and I knew it was true."
"Who sent you?" Zion questioned.
I turned, remembering this probably was new to him as well but was met with a gaze not of surprise, but of worry.
"I-I can't say. Please don't make me."
"Does anyone else know?" I asked, fearing this was only the beginning.
Her silence gave me what I needed. I reached towards my neck preparing to touch the necklace before Zion reached out grabbing my hand to stop me. Ripping the necklace off my neck, he stomped on it, breaking it. A blue light escaped out of the shards, evaporating into the air.
"Hey!" I yelled at Zion. "That was from the Headmaster to protect me. I was going to summon her here to help us! "
"That." he said, pointing to the broken necklace now in pieces on the ground, "was a magical tracker. In the wrong hands, it could be dangerous. Now that we know that there are people in this school that know who you are and want to kill you, you can't trust anyone. Not even the Headmaster."
He stepped in front of me, grabbing one hand while lifting my chin up with his forefinger to look into his eyes.
"I'm not going to let you die." he stated, his forehead wrinkling in distress.
"I'll be fine." I assured him, looking deep into his eyes before turning back to Sara.
"We can keep an eye on the Headmaster but we should still tell her. She is the one who told me to keep it a secret that I was Arogen, why would she send someone to kill me?" I asked, in an attempt to convince him.
"You're right." he said, agreeing.
My head raced with thoughts. It couldn't be the Headmaster. The Headmaster was the only one who stood up for me and let me stay here. She took the spell off of me and has been checking up on me since I got here. I couldn't possibly imagine her trying to kill me. I made a mental list in my head of who knew who I was. John. Sophia. Alan. Sengal. Mr. Sharp. Narxus. It could be any of them.
"I'll go ahead to the Headmaster's office and tell her." Zion offered, searching my eyes.
"Okay." I said, forcing a smile.
"Don't let her out of your sight. I'll be back. This won't take long." he promised before disappearing off in a blink.
I watched Sara, cautiously, before walking towards her. She looked up at me, visibly shaking under the pressure.
"Why do they want me dead?" I implored, curiously.
"You're going to destroy us all." she replied, eyes steady.
As promised, Zion suddenly appeared, Headmaster in hand. From his ragged breathing, I deduced they must've traveled quite a distance.
Rushing over towards me, the Headmaster grabbed my hand while scanning my body with her eyes. I yanked my hand back, still cautious from Zion's words.
"Saron, are you okay?" she asked, eyes laced with concern.
Softening my gaze, I convinced her, "I'm fine."
I pointed over to Sara, crouched on the ground, hugging her body close to her. She must have slithered further away from me when they arrived because she was no longer in front of me but was instead a couple feet away from me.
"What are you going to do with her?" I asked the Headmaster, nodding to Sara.
Redirecting her attention to Sara, her gaze hardened.
"I'll take care of her." she stated, snapping her fingers while murmuring a few words I couldn't decipher. A guard appeared beside her, which made its way towards Sara, yanking her up despite her protests.
"I think it's best you don't go to class today. Until we discover the threat, it's not safe." she ordered. She grabbed the guard's arm who was still holding onto Sara, chanting a spell while waving her hands. In an instant they disappeared, leaving me and Zion alone.
I turned to him silently, waiting for him to break the silence. He cleared his throat before speaking.
"Are you alright?" he inquired, stepping towards me.
"I'm fine."
"I don't believe you." he persisted.
"How are you so calm after finding out who I am. Aren't you curious to why I lied? Aren't you scared of me?" I asked, my nose scrunching in confusion.
"I could never be scared of you." he said, bluntly.
Even more confused, I pushed him away, determined to get a straight answer.
"Why won't you tell me anything? I want to know how you really feel."
"Saron." he said with a serious gaze. "I always knew you were a hybrid. I sensed it the moment I saw you. I was confused that you were hiding it and staying with the angels but I didn't want to chase you away. You don't owe me an explanation. I figured whenever you were ready, you'd explain. In all honesty, it makes sense that you're Arogen. I sensed your strength when I first met you and I see it every time I look into your eyes. I feel all of it. Your hurt, your worry, your pain, your anger, your fear, everything. You're the strongest person I've ever met and feeling your emotions briefly overwhelmed me. I can't imagine how you feel carrying all of that everyday. It makes sense that you're more powerful than any of us. But, I don't care about your powers. I care about you."
I blinked furiously as I stared blankly at him. My chest swelled, overflowing with emotions I didn't understand. It wasn't just me. He felt it too, all my emotions as I felt his. He didn't see me as the monster everyone else did. I felt my heart about to pop right out of my chest the way it was beating. It was pounding so hard I could hear it in my ears. A tear escaped my eye and ran down my cheek as I looked up at Zion. I felt a smile start to creep on my face, realizing he was telling the truth.
He pulled me into an embrace, wrapping his arms around me in comfort. I stayed still, not ready to return the embrace but also not wanting to pull away. I felt safer than I ever had in my life, like nothing could hurt me. He held me tightly, never letting go until I broke away first. My stomach grumbled loudly, to my embarrassment snapping me back to reality.
"What time is it?" I asked.
"7:24"
Realizing the cafeteria has opened, we both eyed one another in realization.
"Wanna race?" I challenged, a mischievous smile breaking on my face. Before he could reply, I raced in a blur landing at the cafeteria with him stumbling next to me, a few seconds later.
"Took you long enough." I joked, playfully shoving him.
"I took it easy on you." he insisted, still out of breath.
Rolling my eyes, I laughed as I walked into the cafeteria, him close on my heel. I headed towards the blood bags confidently, no longer having to hide who I was. He raised his eyes, smiling at me. I shrugged, sheepishly while grabbing four. My stomach rumbled once again at the sight followed by his. We laughed as we made our way to a clear table. There weren't many students there since it was still so early so most of the tables were empty. I ripped off the plastic, devoured the bag in seconds to look up and see Zion on his second bag. Taking that as a challenge, I devoured the next three as fast as I could, finishing at the same time as Zion. I looked at him, his dark messy hair falling onto his beautiful perfectly structured face as a trail of blood ran down the corner of his lip.
Reaching out, I wiped the blood off his face, licking the blood off my finger without realizing what I was doing. He watched me hungrily, his eyes igniting in passion. I felt my heartbeat quicken at the intensity of his gaze. I cleared my throat before changing the subject.
"Hey, why were you mad the other day?"
"It was nothing," he replied, sheepishly.
"Tell me." I insisted.
"It was nothing, really."
"You found out who I am. It's your turn to come clean now."
"I saw you with Tom."
"Tom's my friend."
"I see the way he looks at you." he said carefully.
"What do you mean?" I implored, puzzled.
"Never mind, it was nothing." he said, shaking the thought away before smiling at me.
Noticing his discomfort, I took the hint, changing the subject.
"So um... where's your first class? I can walk you since I'm not going?"
"No. If you're not going to class, I'm not either. I'm not leaving you alone."
"Zion-"
"No, Saron."
Grabbing his hand, I gazed into his eyes before insisting, "I'll be fine. You have to go to class. If I need you, I'll find you."
"Are you sure?" he asked, frowning.
"Yes."
"What are you going to do all day?"
"Sleep." I replied, yawning, remembering I hadn't slept well.
Nodding, he got up beckoning me to join him. I caught up to him, matching him stride for stride as we walked.
"What are you going to tell your friends?"
"Shit." I had completely forgotten about them. I groaned in annoyance. What was I going to say this time? I was getting tired of lying to them. But, I had no choice. It wasn't safe for them to know.
"I'm sick?" I offered.
"Maybe that'd work. If you were human." he replied, chuckling.
I racked my brain trying to come up with some excuse before Zion said, "You better think fast. They're coming."
I looked around frantically, using my enhanced vision to spot Joel, Saron, and Tom a couple hundred feet away walking towards us. They hadn't spotted us yet but they would soon.
Taking a deep breath, I turned to Zion, squeezing his hand before accepting my fate.
"I got this. You should go."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes. I'll be fine." Nodding, he zoomed away in a flash, leaving me alone to face my friends.
I walked towards them slowly, racking my brain while waiting for them to notice me. Star, seeing me, ran towards me excitedly, smiling before her gaze turned serious.
"Where have you been???"
"I took a walk and ended up at the Headmasters."
Not believing me, she frowned, turning to Joel and Tom who were slowly catching up to us.
"Hey!" Joel greeted me excitedly, wrapping his arm around my shoulder.
"Hey." I said, grinning at him, turning to Tom to find Star's frowning expression on him as well.
"We tried to text you." said Tom.
Patting my pockets for my phone, I realized I left it on my bed before I left.
"I forgot my phone. Sorry." I said, looking at them all innocently.
Satisfied, Star perked up, offering, "Let's go get your stuff and go to class before we're late."
"Actually, you guys can go. I was feeling a little tired so The Headmaster said I could miss class for a day."
"No fair! You get to stay while we go to class!" Star protested, frowning.
"You can say that again." agreed Joel.
"I'll see you guys later!" I said, smiling before turning around and walking back before they could reply. I turned around after a few seconds to see their retreating figures, Star bubbling with energy as usual. I smiled before using my speed to get to the wing faster. I strolled in, going straight to my section, anxious to get in my bed. I walked in towards my bed, spotting my blinking phone and opened it up, seeing the messages they were talking about.
There was a message in the group chat from Joel and Tom asking where I was. Star had called me three times. There was also a message from Tom separately asking if I was okay. A wave of guilt reprimanded me for making them worry. I locked my phone before curling up into a ball under the covers. My phone buzzed with an incoming text from Zion.
What are you doing?
I replied quickly before setting my phone down.
Going to sleep. Have fun in class (:
I closed my eyes, drifting off into the quiet, peaceful silence.
I woke up hours later, opening my eyes and looking around to find myself alone in the section. I saw the sun starting to set from the window. I must've been asleep all day. I checked my phone. 5:12 PM
I got up and made my way out to find Tom, Joel, and Star in the Common chatting away. I walked up, snatching a bag of chips from the snack pile they had in front of them, before plopping down beside Star and eating it.
"You're finally awake!" Star exclaimed, grabbing a chip from the bag and plopping it into her mouth.
"How was class?"
"Boring." replied Joel.
"He's only saying that because he lost a battle." Tom said, laughing.
"I don't know what you're talking about." Joel replied, shooting Tom a dirty look.
"I lost to Saron so I know how you feel." Star assured him, smiling.
"We TIED." I corrected her, rolling my eyes.
"Hey, did you guys hear about the Five?" asked Tom, grinning from ear to ear.
"The who?" Star asked.
Relieved I wasn't the only clueless one, I leaned forward, interested to hear more.
"You don't know who the Five are?" asked Joel, eyes widening in disbelief.
"Obviously not." retorted Star, huffing in annoyance.
"I don't either," I added, making Star feel less alone.
"The Five are an alliance of the five most powerful supernatural creatures. One person is chosen to represent their kind, usually the most powerful. They keep the peace and govern the supernaturals. There's a Dragon, Angel, Vampire, Werewolf, and a Witch. I've always heard of them but I've never met one. They're also super rich and they fund all of the supernatural Academies around the world. Apparently they're coming here, to the Academy." Tom explained.
"That's so cool," Star commented.
"Why are they coming here?" I asked.
"Who cares? We finally get to meet one. They're like a legend in the supernatural world." Joel said excitedly.
I looked to Tom for a straight answer.
"Nobody knows. Must be important if they're taking the time to come to our Academy." he replied, shrugging.
My stomach turned at the thought of the five most powerful supernaturals coming. A feeling of uneasiness passed over me. Why were they coming here? What were they looking for? The day's events had me on edge about everything. It can't be a coincidence my life is threatened then a powerful alliance of supernatural creatures decides to visit.
