Chapter XIII

"Rue, here!" I yelled to her, handing her a gas bomb I had picked up near me, flying right past her.

"Thanks!" she called out, before pocketing it and grabbing a spiked ball as well.

I searched through the chaos of the weapons battle to find Thomas, rising up into the air, sword in hand, grinning at me. Distracted, Ben took the opportunity to fly right into him, knocking the sword out of his hand. Infuriated, Thomas chased after him. I looked around the heap to find another sword to secure incase Thomas failed. I spotted Elisha, plucking a sword out of the pile, not bothering to check her surroundings. Determined to catch her off guard, I flew towards her from behind, preparing to snatch the sword dangling from her fingers. Sensing me, she tightened her grip on the sword before raising it towards me. Excited for the challenge, I pulled out the bow and arrow, aiming carelessly towards her feet, to distract her. As I picked up flight speed, I waited until I neared her enough to ensure I wouldn't miss before aiming straight for her hand at the last minute. Eyes widening in realization of her error, she flailed the sword wildly before my arrow flew straight and true, hitting her wrist knocking the sword straight out of her hand. Howling in pain, she clutched her wrist while I swooped in scooping up the sword. Searching the air for Thomas, I found him glaring angrily at Ben who now stood with Star, sword secured in his hand. I flew over to Thomas whose scowl faded as soon as I handed the sword to him. Having all secured weapons, me, Rue, and Thomas quietly hovered, awaiting our fight to begin.

Elisha rejoined us shortly after with another spiked ball in hand, eying me in disgust. If looks could kill, I would've certainly died then and there.

"Begin!" Mr. Sharp howled.

I looked to my left to see a spiked ball tumbling through the air straight at me. I instinctively ducked, hearing the whoosh as it raced over my head straight towards Thomas's back as he clashed swords with Ben.

"Thomas, move!" I screamed as he turned around, eyes widening at the ball heading straight for his face. His wings wrapped around him protectively, causing the ball to bounce off. That was close. I swiveled around to find Elisha smiling at me, proudly.

I turned to find Star cocking her arm back before flinging a gas bomb, straight at me from the left while Ben flew at me with his sword from the right. Cornered, I shot up in the air causing the gas bomb to slam into Ben, exploding, rendering him helpless as he flailed wildly, trying to regain balance. Star speedily flew towards him, catching him on her back before he plummeted to the ground. Visibly shaking under his weight, I caught Rue race towards her to attack. Catching my eye, Rue gave me a nod, warning me to watch Elisha as she headed straight for Star. I searched the sky for Thomas, who flew slowly towards me, wincing, probably from the hit Ben landed on him with the sword before he too got hit.

"Are you okay?" I called out to him.

Nodding, he picked up speed. I heard a shriek and twisted around to find Rue, hit with the spiked ball by Star who was surprisingly quick under Ben's weight. I met Thomas's eyes, exchanging a look of understanding before rushing towards Rue to catch her in the air. With a thump, she landed on my back, knocking me off balance for a brief second before I adjusted. With the weight of Rue on my back, my speed had decreased as I flew towards Thomas, who was now rushing towards Elisha with his sword.

Understanding what I had to do, I flew directly towards Star. Incase Thomas failed, I'd have to battle Star until one of us fell, or dropped the teammate we were carrying. Smiling, Star welcomed the challenge flying towards me with an intense gaze that told me she was going to put up a fight. I carefully reached behind me for my bow and arrow so as to not knock Rue off my back, securing it in my fingertips before positioning it at her back and aiming. Knocking Ben off her back seemed like an easier win than attacking her head on. Understanding what I was planning to do, Star shot up higher in the air, ruining my shot. Grinning, I decided to get closer to see if she would give away anything that may help me predict what she had planned.

"Throw the gas bomb!" one of the students yelled from the sidelines to Star, drawing my attention to the gas bomb I didn't know she had peeking out of her pocket. Scowling, she pushed the bomb deeper into her pocket knowing her secret weapon was no longer secret. I spotted Mr. Sharp at the far end of the arena, perched in one of the seats watching attentively. I searched the arena for anything I might use to attack Star. I found nothing. I turned around to spot Thomas and Elisha still struggling in their battle, no clear winner. This was down to me and Star. Watching Star and deciding she wasn't going to make the first move, I decided to start, cocking my arm back and letting an arrow fly straight for her. While she focused on the arrow, I shot myself down towards the arena, picking up a stray spiked ball that had wandered, securing it before flying back up. Star had successfully dodged the arrow and had now noticed me speeding towards her, spiked ball in hand. Whipping out the gas bomb, she flung it towards me. In a desperate attempt to dodge the bomb that was closing distance on me, I flung the spiked ball towards it before flying away as fast as my wings could take me. The bomb collided with the ball, exploding the gas bomb creating a cloud of foggy smoke. As fast as I flew, I couldn't escape it and felt it weakening me. I held my breath, but to no avail. I could feel my muscles weakening, buckling under the weight. I searched in the fog, my vampire vision helping me see through it. I spotted Star, also trapped a few feet away, struggling to keep in the air. I flapped desperately to keep in the air, feeling myself losing consciousness the longer I was stuck in the fog. Unable to hold on any longer, I felt myself fall. I let go, accepting my loss, closing my eyes. I heard a similar whoosh nearby me and opened my eyes slightly to see Star, falling at the same speed beside me, eyes shut. I smiled. Even in loss, Star was by my side. There was no one else I'd rather lose to. I felt my wings break my fall before I hit the ground, pushing me to my feet. I stumbled clumsily, struggling to keep my eyes open, spotting Rue unconscious beside me from where she slipped off my back. I searched the ground to find Ben, also unresponsive on the ground with Star beside him, unmoving. I walked as fast as I could over to her before collapsing beside her.

"Star?" I whispered to her, shaking her weakly in an attempt to wake her.

My vision blurred as a white fog enveloped me. I felt myself regaining control of my body and my eyelids feeling less and less heavy. I opened my eyes wide, jumping up to see what was happening. When the fog cleared, I saw Mr. Sharp gathered with the other students, waiting patiently for us to come to. I turned to my side to spot Star scrambling to her feet, Ben and Rue had also awakened and were walking towards us. Thomas and Elisha were flying towards us from where they had been battling, both sharing the same grim look, letting me know neither had won before me and Star fell.

"Who won?" Star asked.

"It was a tie." Mr. Sharp replied, impressed. "You and Saron fell at the same time."

Stunned, I looked over to Star who was smiling brightly.

"We will have another battle next class. Everyone will have a chance to prove themselves in battle. Let Star and Saron be your examples on how an angel should be. They battled one another while protecting their teammates on their back, never giving up till the very end. I expect the same from each of you." he announced, dismissing us.

Walking towards Star, I whispered, "I still won." smugly.

"You wish!" she huffed, shoving me.

We walked out together, chattering before going our separate ways. I headed for the room in the deserted hallway where I had trained with Narxus, walking straight through the door to find him waiting.

"Shall we?" he asked, outstretching his hand towards me.

Uneasily, I stepped forward, placing my hand in his. I shivered as I felt him enter my mind and invade me thoughts before quickly creeping out as fast as he came.

"Compelling already are we?" he asked with a wicked grin on his face and an unreadable expression.

He held a hand up, stopping me as I opened my mouth to explain. "I understand, no need to explain. I'm simply surprised by how fast you're learning your powers."

"You've worked on your angel and vampire skills, so I will leave it up to you to decide whether to start with your werewolf or witch side today." he offered, smiling.

Wanting to try something new, I replied, "Werewolf." I had learned about witches, vampires, and angels already but hadn't learned a thing about werewolves. Remembering the huge werewolves I had seen when first coming to Edgewood, I shivered in anticipation.

"Let's begin with the basics. Tomorrow we will get into the change. Strength is a werewolf's strongest trait. They are powerful creatures that were made to attack, therefore they are blessed with great strength."

Looking over to the end of the room, I noticed a fairly large object covered in a blanket. Narxus sauntered over to it, yanking the blanket off to reveal a shiny, black convertible. "Are we going for a drive?" I joked.

"Not exactly. But, the car will be moving."

I crinkled my nose in confusion, waiting for him to elaborate.

"I want you to tap into your werewolf strength to lift up this car and fling it to the end of this room," he said pointing to the end of the long room. It must have been at least 50 feet of distance to cover.

I gasped in disbelief at what he was asking me to do. "You're stronger than you think." he said before stepping back to watch.

I walked towards the car thinking to myself there was no way I was going to lift the car let alone throw it. I stopped in front of the car, placing my hands under the bumper, pushing up in an attempt to lift it up into the air. The car rocked slightly at my attempt, remaining planted on the ground.

I gave Narxus an "I told you so" look, crossing my arms in defeat while leaning back against the car.

"If you don't believe in yourself, you'll never lift it."

UGH. I hated that he was right. I wasn't even trying. My mind was exhausted from trying to figure out how to use all my powers. I sighed, realizing I was wasting his time if I didn't at least make the effort. I stared at the car, committed to lifting it.

"I can do this." I said glaring at the car like it could see me. I searched within myself for a hint, a clue, a door, anything that would help me tap into my werewolf powers. I tried once again to lift it, failing to bring it into the air. I paced around the car, thinking about how to lift it. My mind was doing flips trying to tap into my power, coming up empty handed each time.

"Strong emotions can be a trigger to releasing your power. Anger. Love...." Narxus listed in attempts to help me.

I closed my eyes, preparing to grasp on the first emotion I found as I searched my mind. Zion appeared in mind and I grasped on the image, not allowing it to escape. I focused on his husky, thick scent that engulfed me everytime he was near. His deep, sea green eyes that I got lost in every time I peered into his eyes. His thick, dark hair and tight curls that always looked perfect every time I saw him. His deep, low voice that made goosebumps run up and down my spine when he parted his lips to speak. His beautiful, crooked smile that made all my worries and fears fade away. I focused on him, and all my other thoughts exited without a trace from my mind. Slowly, I could feel my body filling up with power, so much of it I began to visibly shake. I walked back around to the bumper, placing my hands under it, lifting it up until it was vertical, bumper facing the ceiling. I could feel my muscles growing as I lifted the car with one hand, which had now become light as a feather, flipping it back to it's horizontal position. I balanced the car on the palm of hand, grinning at Narxus who watched me with a smile, beaming from ear to ear. I bent my arm back a little bit, sensing I was strong enough that I didn't have to throw it far to land it on the other side of the room. I tossed it effortlessly, sending it sailing through the air before crashing down facing up, with it's rear flat on the ground.

Clapping, Narxus whooshed over to me in a blink. "I told you, didn't I?" he said, not surprised at all by my success. I twirled in the air in excitement, the rush of my new werewolf power energizing me.

"Tomorrow, we will start the change. You're ready now. Get some rest and I'll see you tomorrow."
