Chapter XII
"You woke up?!" I observed, surprised.
She grinned at me sheepishly before crawling out of bed and getting dressed. Looking around, I found that most of the girls were still asleep. I took off to the bathroom to wash up. I walked quickly inside, washed my face, moisturized my hair, brushing it out until my shiny curls locked in place. I walked back and got dressed, throwing on my white blazer. I glanced at my phone. 8:20 AM. Satisfied, I gathered my things leaving with Star to start our second day of class. We walked out to find the boys sprawled out on the couch, goofing around. After spotting us, they jumped up excitedly, making their way towards us.
"On time?" Joel commented with an impressed look about his face.
"Thanks to this one." I replied, nudging Star beside me. She shrugged with a grin on her face, tugging Joel towards the door.
"Let's go guys!" she shouted in excitement.
Holding my ears, shook from her sudden outburst, I groaned, "Too early, Star!"
I fell into pace with Tom, walking behind Joel and Star.
"How'd you sleep?" asked Tom, thoughtfully.
"Like a baby. You?"
"Not too well."
"Why not?"
"Had a lot of things on my mind." he replied, distantly.
"Hey Saron, wanna fly up today?" asked Star excitedly, looking back at me expectantly.
I froze, not knowing what to do, Mr. Sharp's warning echoing in my mind.
"I- I can't." I replied weakly, my throat drying.
"Come on, it's easy! You can do it!" Star encouraged, stretching out her wings. Seeing Star release her wings, Joel let his out with a snap, displaying his thick, black wings.
"You guys go ahead, really." I insisted, shooting them a smile.
Frowning, Star looked to Joel who nodded, before they took off soaring past the staircase to the top, laughing. They effortlessly weaved through the pack of students climbing up the staircase and the few flying nearby them. Joel looked down at me and Tom, grinning before doing a graceful, somersault midair. Star's eyes widened in enthusiasm before copying his movement.
"You can go Tom. I'll meet you guys at the top." I offered, eying Tom's gaze sensing his desire to spread his wings and join them.
"No. It's fine." he said looking at me, convincing himself more than me.
"Alright." I agreed, noticing the set look on his face, deciding not to press him further.
We climbed the stairs quickly, finding Joel and Star at the top, giggling to one another.
"What's so funny?" Tom joked with a smirk on his face.
"That was so fun! Guys, you have to join us next time!!" Star squealed, shooting me a determined look that said she wasn't taking no for an answer.
I smiled at her eagerness. As I walked down the hallway, I noticed them stumbling a little less than before. I walked slowly, matching their pace so as to not arouse any suspicion.
We arrived at the forked path, bidding farewell to the boys before disappearing down our path. We walked quickly to our first class, arriving early this time and settling in our seats near the back. The class flew by, my mind occupied elsewhere. I couldn't help myself, my mind always seemed to wander back to Zion no matter what I did.
"Hate that class." Star muttered on our way out.
I rolled my eyes in agreement before she took off to her next class. Focusing my eyes, I found myself once again searching for Zion. I found him walking quickly down the dark hallway, imagining myself a few feet behind him before using my vampiric speed to rush to his location. I landed behind a cluster of students, Zion walking ahead, distracted. I steadied my breathing before walking past the group to catch up to them.
"Hey." he said dryly, sensing me behind him.
"What's wrong?" I asked, gazing through him, feeling his anger, his sadness, his despair, and another emotion I couldn't quite place. Something was wrong. I searched his eyes to find a clue but his expression was guarded, shutting me out.
"Did I do something?" I tried, grabbing his wrist to slow him down.
"No." he replied, pulling away.
Puzzled, I opened my mouth to ask him what was wrong once again. Before I could utter the words, he looked sternly into my eyes, stating, "We'll talk later." before using his vampiric speed to disappear off into a blur.
Standing there, frozen trying to understand what just happened, my phone pinged. It was from Star.
I'm bored. What class r u in?
I glanced at the time, noticing I now had only 5 minutes to get to class. I quickly replied to Saron.
Going to history now, thx for reminding me (:
I focused on the hallway that led to the classroom before arriving there in a blur.
"What the hell?!" Amy's voice screamed as I slammed into her, unable to stop myself in time. Her eyes widened after realizing it was me before scrunching her face in disgust.
"Watch where you're going- wait, how did you?" she started to yell before realizing to my horror what I'd just done.
Eyes widening in realization, her mouth dropped open uttering, "You're a vampire."
Her eyes ran over me, noticing my white blazer before bringing her hands to her mouth in surprise.
"You're a hybrid." she whispered, lips curling up into a mischievous smile.
She whipped out her phone, furiously clicking buttons with a smirk on her face. I snatched the phone out of her hand looking at a chat opened up to Bea and "Saron is a hybrid. Always knew she was a freak." typed in the message box. I erased it quickly, ignoring her protests.
"Give me my phone back!" she snarled, reaching out to grab it out of my hand. I looked into her eyes, desperately and said "I'm an Angel. You're confused." Her hand froze in midair from where she reached towards her phone before returning back to its place by her side. Her eyes dilated as she stared blankly at me repeating what I said, "You're an Angel. I'm confused." A spark went off inside my head as I processed what I just did. I just compelled her. I quickly placed her phone in her hand before rushing down the hall into the classroom, finding an empty seat towards the back and placing myself in it. Amy walked in, a few seconds later, shooting me a dirty look as usual before slipping into a seat near the front. A million questions swarmed in my head. Did she know? How did compelling work? Would she remember I compelled her? How would I even know if it worked?
I pushed my worries out of my mind, forcing myself to focus on the teacher.
"Today, we'll start with witches. Witches are the oldest supernatural creatures after angels. They've been around so long, no one has been able to trace their true origins. Witches were created to maintain order within the Earth. Their power derives from everything around us: the air, the trees, the plants, the rain. The first witches only used their powers for good, to destroy evil and help people. But as witches started delving into darker magic, the natural order of things became disrupted. As the years passed, witches started doing things for their own benefit rather than for the greater good, causing the Earth to no longer speak to them. The trees, the plants, the flowers stopped providing them power making witches resort to darker means. There are still a select few witches on this Earth who use their power for good, deriving their magic from the Earth and the living things around them. But now, most witches rely on the magic that comes from inside of them as the supernatural beings they are. Witches have evolved, now gathering in covens to obtain power. Witches all contain magic within them but it isn't strong enough to do more than simple spells without the power the Earth provides them. Magic is a powerful thing, it thrives in masses. Witches must gather in covens to produce a large amount of magic to create and perform spells which is why today's witches are always found in covens. A typical coven has around ten witches. Witches cannot do much in groups less than five. A witch alone cannot do much unless that witch delves in dark magic. Dark magic, however, always comes with a price and that price usually is blood."
I edged forward in my seat, intrigued as she continued on. I'd always been fascinated by witches. Perhaps it was because I grew up sneaking peeks of Amy and Bea casting spells with Mrs. Gerbin.
"That's it for today. See you tomorrow!" she finished with a smile.
I walked out, my brain churning all the information swirling around in my brain. I made my way out out of the section, starting my way down to my Angel class. I focused my eyes to find Star already here, waiting in front of the building for me. She lit up at the sight of me approaching, rushing over to me.
"Hey." I greeted her.
"Hey! How was history?"
"Interesting, you?"
"Fun. I can't wait to use my wings again!"
We walked into class to find we were the first ones there. Having our pick of the seats, we chose the two closest to the door. We gossiped for a few minutes in hushed tones incase someone came in. Soon, students started walking in one by one. After the last seat was filled, our instructor pranced in, joyfully.
"How are we doing today angels?" he roared, flinging his arms in the air to encourage an enthusiastic response. We laughed in response, preparing for today's lesson. He pulled a string that was hanging from the ceiling near the front of the arena, causing the arena to slowly expand before our eyes. The floor began spreading wider, expanding the already spacious space into a room that seemed as big as a football stadium.
"Today, we are flying." he announced. We all woo'd in excitement as we scrambled out of our seats to join him on the ground. We all spread out, farther than before due to the bigger space we now had to work with. I effortlessly released my wings, having already had practice and looked around to find everyone with their wings outstretched as well. I caught a few eyes sneaking peeks at my wings but significantly less than yesterday. Everyone settled down, focusing their attention to our teacher as he explained what we were to do.
"Okay, now I want you to picture yourself spreading your wings and rising up and flying. Remember, you are in complete control of your wings. It may take a few tries but you'll soon find flying just as easy as raising your hand."
I watched as a few students shot up in the air violently before crashing to the floor. A few flapped their wings so violently they remained on the ground unable to rise. I saw a few successfully rise up and soar through the arena, getting angry looks of jealousy from the rest. Star effortlessly floated up, gaining more confidence and stability with each flap before gliding through the sky gracefully. I watched her, chest puffed with pride. I closed my eyes, remembering my lesson from yesterday with Narxus. I opened my eyes, remembering my mistakes, determined not to repeat them. I jumped up into the air, my wings rising me up higher and higher. I shakily attempted to shift myself sideways to fly towards Star, who was patiently hovering in the air waiting for me to join her. After a few failed attempts, I successfully gained balance, flying towards her at a steady speed.
"Whooooooo! You're flying!!!" she exclaimed excitedly.
I grinned at her, circling around her in the air.
"Everyone, pay attention to Star and Saron." our teacher yelled out. "Don't try to fly perfectly at once. You must be patient. Calmly, take off from the ground and allow your wings to steady you." he instructed.
After a while, we were all flying through the arena, weaving through one another, the arena filled with the sound of wings flapping and excited laughter.
Satisfied with our progress, he released his wings rising up quickly from where he was watching us at the center of the arena, motioning for us to surround him in the air.
"Now that you've all gotten comfortable in your wings, we are going to practice fighting in the air. I am going to split you into teams and give each of you weapons. The goal is to take down at least one person from the opposing team by causing them to fall out of the sky. You can help your teammates but if one of your team members fails to catch you in time, you lose. Your wings will brace your fall so don't worry about getting hurt. We will be using rubber weapons so it shouldn't hurt too badly."
"Saron, Rue , and Thomas." he declared, separating us into the first group.
"Star, Ben, and Elisha." I looked over to Star shooting her an evil grin, letting her know I was going to beat her. She stuck out her tongue at me before huddling with her group.
I flew over to where my group was and we clustered to discuss strategy.
"Look at the weapons." Thomas said, pointing to a heap of weapons including bows and arrows, swords, spiked balls, and gas bombs.
"Saron, you're good at the bow so you take that. I'll take the sword. Rue, you take the gas bombs." he ordered, formulating a clear plan of attack.
I nodded, agreeing. Rue tied her long black hair back tightly, with a determined expression set on her face, preparing herself.
"Take your weapons!" Mr. Sharp called out.
Without a second's hesitation, all three of us started flying at top speed towards the heap. I looked over to find Star's team flying at the same speed, shooting us death glares. I changed my path, aiming towards the far edge of the pile, where I spotted a bow and arrows to avoid the unavoidable crash that would occur when my team rammed into Stars'. I snatched the bow and arrow from the side securing it on my back before snapping back up into the air . A clash alerted me that our teams had clashed. I redirected my eyes to the center of the pile, where everyone was pushing and pulling to grab the weapon they wanted. I spotted Star punch Rue square in the face, snatching a gas bomb out of her hand before flying away. I dove in to help her as I watched her stumble in dizziness from the impact.
