Chapter VIII

I looked over the schedule, lingering over the last class.

"Red Room?" I asked

"You'll come here on Monday where my friend will be here waiting. He will take you to a private room where you will meet and practice every day. I decided it's best for you to train your other powers with someone skilled in your kind, away from the other students. He will teach you to control your emotions and your powers so accidents won't happen when you're alone. This will also make it easier for you to protect your identity from your friends." I breathed a sigh of relief after hearing this. I was wondering how I'd be able to hide from Star my true identity and hone my other powers. This was perfect.

"Thank you Headmaster."

"Of course," she replied, rising from her seat and blowing out the candle. "If you ever need me, don't forget to touch the necklace," she reminded me.

"I will," I replied before getting up and preparing to head out.

"Don't forget your schedule," she reminded me, holding out the paper to me. I grabbed it, thanking her, and left the office.

I walked back to the White wing, my mind laid to rest from the Headmaster's answers. I couldn't help but feel a rush of excitement as I clutched my schedule in my pocket. Tomorrow classes started and I finally would begin to tap into my power. My smile quickly faded as I walked through the door, spotting Star, Joel, and Tom sprawled out on a couch in the Common. I had forgotten how I left things and my brain once again started scrambling like a hamster on a wheel trying to come up with a believable excuse to explain my abrupt leave. I took a deep breath, stilling myself before slowly walking towards them. Star, sensing me nearing, whirled around towards me gazing at me with an unreadable expression upon her face. Tom and Joel, noticing her shifted attention, also swiveled around to face me with wide eyes. I gulped down my uneasiness and decided to tell them the truth. Part of it, anyways.

"Hey," I said nervously before plopping down on a nearby couch across from them.

"Are you okay?" Star asked, concerning shifting her attention to my formerly split but now completely healed finger.

"Your hand healed," observed Joel.

I glanced at Tom to find him cautiously eying me, waiting for an explanation. Star and Joel also remained silent, avoiding my eyes, quietly urging me to open up.

Holding up my healed hand, I spoke, "My adoptive mother casted a spell on me to stop my healing process. It affected my abilities but I went to the Headmaster and she had it removed. I'm fine now."

Star cast me an understanding smile before replying, "I'm sorry Saron. Your mom is a bitch."

"Not my mom," I corrected, chuckling.

"Why would she do that?" Tom asked curiously, not entirely convinced by my explanation.

I shrugged as I bluntly stated, "She didn't love me. Maybe she was hoping I'd get hurt and die and finally be out of her hair."

"Forget her, you have us now," Joel said with a grin on his face, tackling me in a bearhug.

"I...can't breathe," I struggled to say, pushing Joel off of me, laughing.

I glanced around to find all three of them back to normal, chatting away like nothing had ever happened. I let out a sigh of relief. I was safe, for now.

"Saron! We all got our schedules this morning. Do you have yours yet?" Star asked, excitedly.

I pulled out my schedule from my pocket and handed it to her. She snatched it out of my hand, running her eyes over it before yelping in excitement.

"We have our Math and Angel class together!!!!" she exclaimed enthusiastically.

Tom then grabbed the paper from her hand, running his eyes over it.

Frowning, he declared, "You have none with me."

"Good thing we all live together, huh," I said smirking at him, causing his smile to return to his face.

Peering over Tom's shoulder, Joel questioned, "What's Red room?"

My blood ran cold. I had forgotten that was there. What was I going to say this time? Lying to my new friends was starting to become an exhausting sport.

Saving me, Tom replied, "It's a private class for inexperienced students who need extra help with their powers."

I shot Tom a grateful smile which he returned with an understanding nod. Of course, the Headmaster had already come up with a backup plan for if I got discovered. Now they'd think I was inexperienced rather than holding enough power to destroy the Academy and everyone in it.

"Don't worry Saron, you'll be on our level in no time," Joel reassured me with a wink.

"I'm tired guys, I'm going to go to bed," Star said, with a yawn.

"Me too," I agreed with heavy eyes and a weak smile, my body suddenly realizing my weariness.

"Let's all meet here at 8:30 since we all start at 9. We can walk together?" Joel offered.

Star looked to me for approval before nodding yes and we went back to the wing.

"I'll take a shower," I said, gathering my things before heading to the shower.

Star nodded absentmindedly as she changed into her pjs. I headed to the bathrooms, taking a quick shower rushing to get to my bed and walked back to our section.

I put my things away and crept into bed quietly, thinking Star was asleep before I heard a voice whisper, "Saron?"

I turned to my other side to face her and saw a worried look on her face.

"What's wrong, Star?" I whispered back.

"I'm nervous for tomorrow," she admitted, timidly.

Trying to hide my surprise, I reassured her, "it'll be fine. We have two classes together and I'm sure the rest will go fine." She was always a bundle of energy, never shy to speak to others. Seeing this side of her surprised me, but after all she was still a first, just like me.

"I have a class with Joel!" she announced excitedly, eyes lighting up.

"Joel, huh?" I teased, lifting my eyebrows.

"No! Not like that," she protested, eyes widening in surprise at my assumption.

"If you say so," I replied, winking at her before turning back over to my comfortable side.

Feeling her gawking at me from behind, I turned my head over and said, "You two would be cute together."

Waiting for a protest that never came, I dozed off.

I woke up to the blaring sound of Star's phone and whirled around to find her peacefully asleep in her bed, unphased.

"Come on Star!" the girl at the other side of Star whined while shoving her head under her blanket.

A few other girls joined me in throwing our pillows at Star in an attempt to wake her to no avail. Groaning, I reluctantly rose from my bed jumping onto Star, waking her up while grabbing her phone to stop the alarm.

"Are you crazy?" she yelled, looking around in confusion.

"Are you?" I shot back, holding up her now silent phone that had woken up half our section.

Covering her mouth in surprise she looked around her to find half the girls giving her death stares. "Sorry," she yelled, jumping up from bed causing me to fall off the bed from the sudden movement.

"Owww!" I wailed, glaring up at her rubbing my head where I landed.

"Oh my gosh I'm so sorry!" she apologized, helping me up.

"Your alarm privileges are revoked," I said gravely, head still pounding from the alarm blaring on end.

I went to the bathroom and freshened up, washing away any trace of sleep that was left after my rude awakening. Refreshed, I walked back to our section to find Star fully dressed, sitting on her bed waiting for me.

"You look awfully chipper for someone who's life is in danger," I cracked, gesturing to the few girls still glaring at her in anger.

Wiping the smile from her face, she averted her gaze to the ground, whispering, "Hurry up so we can leave."

"What's the rush?" I asked before grabbing my phone to see it was already 8:27.

"Shit." I quickly got dressed, pulling on my white blazer to top it off before motioning to Star. We rushed out, still feeling eyes on our back from the angry girls.

I laughed at her embarrassed expression as we walked out towards the Common.

"You're late," Joel said to us seriously.

"By two minutes," I retorted, smiling at Tom who stood beside him quietly with a similar expression.

"Where's Gwen and David?" Star asked.

"They have early classes. They started an hour ago," Tom replied before turning on his heel and leading the way out.

"We can all walk halfway but then you and Star have to go a different path to get to the Math division," Tom informed me.

As we walked out of the wing, we took a different path. We walked up the swiveling staircases I've been eying in disgust since we walked in. As we walked, I spotted a few kids sprouting wings, flying up to their destination. Others floated and others even ran past us in their animal forms.

"Once you learn how to fly, you'll be able to do that too," Tom reassured me.

"Please tell me we are almost there!" Star whined.

"Here!" Joel announced a few seconds later.

We walked into a dark, ominous hallway with no lights. Quickly realizing I was the only one able to still see where I was going, I began feeling my surroundings like Tom, Joel, and Star was.

"This is the worst part," Tom said, squinting in an attempt to improve his vision.

"Seeing in the dark is a werewolf and vampire strength. We are creatures of light not darkness," Joel said scowling.

Continuing to struggle despite the fact that I could see perfectly, we finally got to the end of the hallway, reaching a cross path branching out into four hallways with separate colors painted above the doorway.

"Blue is the path to the history classes. Orange is for math. White is for the supernatural classes to practice our abilities. Green is for the battle courses," said Tom

"Battle courses?" I questioned, eyes raised.

"Once you're experienced enough in your powers, they assign you courses to battle other people to prepare you for real fights," explained Joel.

"Cool," I remarked.

"Saron, Star give me your phones," Joel ordered. After the click of a few buttons, he handed them back to us displaying a group chat with the four of us.

"Text us if you need anything. We'll see you guys later. Good luck," Tom said, heading down the white path with Joel.

"Let's go!" Star pleaded, tugging on my arm. I complied, taking down the orange path with her. The path was just a couple meters, coming to an end shortly. The path led out into a cave with multiple buildings creating a spherical formation around the space with a courtyard in the middle where students rushed every which way. Intangible mathematical symbols were hovering in the air, likely produced by magic. I frowned, turning to Star to see a similar scowl on her face. After much searching, we arrived at our building, walking towards it and heading in.

"Firsts go here!" a woman yelled over the crowd of students gesturing to a pathway going further down. We followed that path, landing in a vast, spacious room with what must've been a thousand seats which were already mainly filled.

"There!" Star said, pointing at a few empty seats near the back. I nodded, following her to that section, sitting down and preparing for the worst.

A few minutes later, a stout, dirty blonde haired lady with thick rimmed glasses that seemed too big for her face and a glower I could spot from the back of the room boomed with a frightening voice, "Listen up. My name is Miss Z. If you cheat, you fail. If you talk while I'm teaching, you fail. If you're late, you fail."

Star turned to me, frightened. Spotting Star, she added, "If you look at your friends while I'm talking, you fail." Star snapped her head back around clutching her purse so tightly, her knuckles began turning white. I reached over, squeezing her hand in comfort. She loosened her grip, relaxing as she continued to stare straight ahead like her life depended on it.

Miss Z turned and snapped her fingers, then stepped to the side revealing a board that wasn't previously there. She touched it and it enlarged itself spreading several feet to the right and the left. Satisfied, she grabbed nearby chalk and started scratching unknown math symbols on the board in front of her. She continued this for the entire hour of class without turning around until it hit the minute we were to leave.

Without even looking at the clock, she swiveled around and said, "Good luck on the rest of your classes," with a bright smile before turning back around and snapping her hands.

I looked at the formerly filled board with math equations of all kinds now completely empty as if no one has ever written on it. Shaking off my surprise, I rose with the many students rushing out to leave and joined them, Star close behind me.

"Are you okay?" I asked her once we were out and back in the hallway.

"I don't think I've ever been more scared of someone in my life," she replied, shivering.

"When's your next class?" I asked, chuckling.

"Now, i'll see you later!" she called out, running down the hall.

Chuckling, I waved bye at her running figure.

I felt a vibration in my pocket with an incoming text. I reached inside and pulled out my phone to see an incoming text from Tom. I clicked on the text to open it.

How was class?

Intense. The teacher is a nightmare :/

Who do you have?

Miss Z

Haha she is the worst. I had her as a first.

I grinned, imagining him struggling to type on the tiny screen with his clumsy hands.

"Who's that?" someone whispered in my ear. I jumped, causing my phone to drop from my hand and clash on the ground. I whirled around to find Zion standing behind me with his arms crossed. I had been so caught up in my phone I didn't notice him sneak up behind me.

"None of your business," I snapped, bending down to snatch up my phone before shoving it in my pocket.

"Who's Tom?"

"Don't you have class?" I shot back.

"I don't start for another hour," he replied, comfortably leaning back on the wall near us.

"Why are you here so early?"

He reached out and brushed a stray curl behind my ear causing goosebumps to run through my body. I sucked in my breath to steady myself from the fireworks exploding inside of me. He stared at me longingly, avoiding my question. I stepped forward, drawn to him causing him to to step forward as well. We stared into each other's eyes lost in one another, barely an inch apart for what seemed like an eternity until a ping from my phone brought me back to my senses. As if suddenly realizing our close proximity to one another, I stepped away glancing down at my phone in my hand to see another text from Tom.
